  • This Brookyln home is a rare find. So rare in fact, that the Architect built this home, and only this home! A historic victorian home in Prospect Park South.
    It’s not often homes like this hit the market. The 10,000 + square-foot mansion, features ionic columns, a dramatic ballroom and plenty of historic details.
    Friend to the show, Ryan Serhant from Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing New York gives us the tour.

    This house was sold in January of 2017. Wish the new owners would post a video so we could see how they decorated the interior. This house is beautiful.

      Well if I had $18,000 to spare in property taxes I’d love to. Property taxes are evil. Only half the people that could afford the upfront price on that house, would have the disposable income to be able to afford the property tax, but I guess that’s what New York City is being geared towards these days, not those that could save up for this house after 50 years, but who could afford to pay for it afterwards for all the government expenditures, which means Young Money, or entrepreneur, because to afford that tax after the federal income tax alone on a good yearly paycheck of 120-150k... is difficult, after paying food, private and public service expenditures, insurance,

      Looks like they only bought it to flip. Its for sale again. They did a very nice job fixing it up. Only problem is they need a very rich buyer as its like 5x more expensive now. =(

    This brings back so many memories of my younger years. I grew up on 364 Argyle Road - just a few blocks down from the home featured in this video. I walked, biked and drove on Albemarle Road hundreds of times and I saw this home as many times over the 20 years that I lived in Brooklyn. I always admired this particular home as it was my favorite big home on Albemarle Road.

    This would make an amazing bnb!!!! But the ballroom ceilings are just way too low. 😳 More like a great dance studio.

    • @FigaroHey
      @FigaroHey 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I'm thinking that's a modern change to the original. The ceilings ARE too low. Unless it was just bad design in the first place. My grandparents' home was smaller: two living rooms, dining room, grand hall, housekeeper's suite (bedroom, sitting room, bath), kitchen and 1/2 bath plus closet for guests' coats on the ground floor; bedroom/ dressing room/ bathroom suite across the front of the house on the second floor, with another bedroom/en suite bath on that floor; family sitting room across the back with a solarium off the sitting room. It was built for a family of THREE: parents, one daughter (railroad tycoon). The third floor was four bedrooms and two bathrooms - and all for the servants. My suspicion is that the top floor of this Brooklyn house was servants' quarters, especially based on the lower ceilings, apparently than you find on the 'family' floors. The only thing that makes me doubt is that there doesn't seem to be a separate staircase for the servants, which my grandparents' house did have, and only that staircase reached the top floor.

    Right across from the Halloween House... nice. Always loved Prospect Park South. Seemed like an oasis in a desert. Beautiful and diverse architectural styles, reminiscent of suburban Virginia, Westchester and upstate NY. But walk 5 blocks in any direction and you'll see the real Brooklyn. Not sure I'd pull the trigger on 13M even if I had it, in spite of the beauty and history associated with this home.

    He described the columns wrong. They are ionic columns not corinthian. Three types of columns (learned from from my HS Latin class) are Ionic (scroll),
    Corinthian (based on the acanthus leaf -- related to the thistle), and Doric (plain).

    '15 minutes to Downtown NY"...? Right! It used to take me at least 45 minutes to get to Grand Central by subway, sometimes over one hour on the weekends. Let's see if Ryan takes his camera crew outside the tiny neighborhood (1.5 x 5 blocks) where this house sits in... to check on the real Brooklyn.... SCARY! Especially at night. It's like being in another country. Another continent. Good luck with selling the house. Cheers.

    Caps and gowns? Are we at a graduation? Or does this guy think that people wore baseball caps everywhere in 1905? The 'built-in' in the dining room is not a place for getting drinks. It's for the servants to put dishes of food during dinner before serving them, carving meat, etc., to put on platters and take around the table. The men would have been SERVED drinks by the servants and sat and drank their port and smoked their cigars in the dining room; the women would have left to a 'withdrawing' or 'drawing' room. They shouldn't get some know-nothing in sneakers to show such a house. It deserves better.

    Ryan missed telling his audience about the house (1:08) where the movie
    'Sophie's Choice' (Alan J. Pakula, with Meryl Strip and Kevin Kline) was filmed decades ago. One of the old grand wooden houses still standing in that tiny neighborhood. Cute area, just surrounded by so many bad (really bad and dangerous) neighborhoods.

    • @FigaroHey
      @FigaroHey 6 років тому +1

      Thanks, I was looking at that and thinking, 'Hey, wasn't that house pink in Sophie's Choice?' And from that movie, I got the idea that Brooklyn was this beautiful, leafy place with large, gracious homes, and could never understand (as a Californian) why New Yorkers would speak of Brooklyn with a sort of shudder in their voices. If it looked like in Sophie's Choice, what was so wrong with it? :)

    • @carriebtc
      @carriebtc 6 років тому +1

      6 decades could make a big difference in the quality of living of a neighborhood Figaro Hey!. "Sophie's Choice" was set at the end of WWII (the late 40's), Brooklyn used to be then a nice Borough of NYC. There were a lot of great family neighborhoods, schools, churches, shopping strips, parks, etc. Nowadays the area is littered with 'gentrified' neighborhoods (pushed by the real estate developers)...surrounded by very dangerous and dilapidated ones. The tiny pocket of nice homes Ryan is trying to sell is surrounded by not very nice and very dangerous neighborhoods, like Flatbush, Ditmas Park, and the infamous Crown Heights (to name a few)... That's the real Brooklyn the dwellers of Prospect Park South will have to face any given day of the year.... not just the nice Tree Lined Albermarle Rd. Cheers

    • @FigaroHey
      @FigaroHey 6 років тому +2

      That's a shame. I guess in the 'old days' there were probably many working-class families who could afford a decent single-family home in Brooklyn? Manufacturing left New York City decades ago, as I understand, and highways cut through what had been working-class, 'ethnic' neighborhoods, right? I think that in the past, the people might not have been 'gentrified' but probably were proud of their homes and neighborhoods, cared about the safety of the streets, worked and shopped and worshiped locally, engaged in local recreational opportunities, and families could afford to live on one income and have several kids. At least that was the story in my parents' and oldest siblings' time. Something has gone very wrong with our society, and the degradation of formerly safe, family-friendly neighborhoods in the big cities is a sign of it. In my native area, San Francisco and Oakland used to be full of families and working-to-middle-class homeowners. Now my sister-in-law, who sells homes in San Francisco, and specializes in first-time buyers, says you have to expect to pay a million dollars just to get into the market. What working-class or single-income family with three or four can afford that? And forget about all the single mothers our sexual revolution has so generously graced us with: they are just going to be poor - period. So all those people have been shoved out, and gentrification is in. The rich get richer and 'honest working man' gets poorer. That's not how it should be in the US.

    • @carriebtc
      @carriebtc 6 років тому +1

      That's the New World Order's economic formula: 'The rich get richer and 'honest working man' gets poorer'. Strengthen the rich, and weaken the poor... even further.

    Wouldn’t it be funny if someone purchased that house & few weeks into moving in you’re asleep & you hear 1905 music 🎶 & dancing 💃 🕺 in the Ball Room? LMFAO!!! That shit would be insanely funny looking in from the outside. Hell razor scary if you’re the buyer. LOL!

      That house is cheap...that would cost a fortune in Toronto, Canada. This is 10,000 plus sq. ft.

    Wait a minute this is not a Victorian house. I think the style is more aptly called Georgian. That's sort of concerning when our realtor doesn't know even basic architecture terms.

      The exterior looks pretty Victorian to me. I grew up in one and it has the same look and feel as this one.

      Queen Victoria died in 1901 and this house was built in 1905. In the UK we would call it Edwardian but I don't know what the rules are in the US. Looks like a colonial revival to me.

      exactly what I was thinking. Do these "kids" who try to sell homes even get an intro into home styles. Also, this place needs a lot of work.

    This is way farther away than 15 minutes from Manhattan. Both by Subway and car. Been there, done that.

    This house is very similar to the one I grew up in, with the exception that the house I grew up in has 7 bedrooms and this one has 10. Otherwise the style is the virtually the same.
