    "Pour your own fucking tea" was the start of where I knew this episode would be brilliant. Mr Grey is the ally we all want and didn't know we had!
    According to the diaries AW was always pushing and pulling AL due to her faith, internalised homophobia, finances and even servants disputes. I hope there is a few more seasons and goes up until AL's death.

      It will be a travesty if we don't get at least 1 more season! Funny thing about the "pour your own fucking tea" line---I rewound and rewatched that scene about 9 times. I just found it so interesting that they let us inside AW's head for a brief period of time and then had AL respond to it almost as if she heard her say it!

    Thomas Sowden was at the casino dedication, they showed him twice. They must be leaving it for season 3. Also, the writer is following the journals as much as she can so the early content with Mariana was showing us the final hurrah with her and Anne focusing on her relationship with Ann. In real life that is where she did end it with Mariana.

    Great reaction as always. This season has been about the psychology of the relationship rather than season 1's thrill of the Chase. The theme has been "how does a marriage work?" I note that you (and other commentators) do not pay attention to the scene in Ashbourne church where Anne Lister becomes emotional while viewing the monument to Penelope Boothby. I think this is shown as the beginning of the healing of the relationship between the two women. How often have we seen AL reveal her doubts and vulnerability? In this scene she gives herself emotionally and spiritually, rather than physically, to AW. The acting is brilliant as you see AW move from repressed annoyance through amazement to a joyful realisation that she is truly loved. The problem of a childless marriage, and it is a problem for them in their era is addressed and acknowledged. Today it is a non issue for gay couples but in a time when women were defined by their role as wife and mother embracing a relationship in which one role had to be hidden and the other was impossible required a huge degree of commitment. For me this scene was literally the heart of the episode.

    • @AmandaCostner
      @AmandaCostner  2 роки тому +3

      You're right I did ignore the baby scene, partly because a lot of my commentary about this scene would have involved me mostly asking questions. I'm not finished with the diaries and not sure this is in the diaries, but I'd be very curious about whether this was rooted in the writer's room or the diaries. I think I saw it as a scene that we were supposed to view, as an audience, as powerful, and because I didn't fully get on board with it, sort of shrugged my shoulders, noted the change in AW's attitude as you said, and moved on.
      A lot of my questions surrounding this scene involved the way it made me feel watching it. I found it a little odd, just the entire concept of "this child who has died, I thought this could be, like, our child". There's so much going on in just that one sentence. If I was in AW's shoes I would have been like "you want me to treat someone else's dead baby as if it was your and mine dead baby??" lol like I'm sure other more mature, less silly people would immediately understand what was happening and take it as a sign that they're meant to be together, I just really didn't know how to take it. But it's an interesting scene. Almost somewhat of a shocking scene.

      @@AmandaCostner It seemed manipulative to me. I didn't buy it for a second. Especially after AL had that whole temper tantrum in episode 7. I think the actress Suranne intentionally wanted to come across as having fake tears and putting on a big show for AW's benefit. I think her talking to Lady Cameron about children seemed more genuine after she had some time to reflect and had just f'd up with AW yet again.

    i think them needing/wanting to stick to the diaries, they needed more episodes to bring all the various story lines to a decent conclusion, and give us more drama.
    Like what about the coal and her not knowing who to trust? what about the elections, what happened in the end? things that got so much focus just never... reached an actual conclusion.
    Like at that point either step away from the diaries, ignore some of the business that occurred and enhance the drama, or add more episodes to both end the side quests, and give the characters more scenes.. like more thomas serial killer sowden, more mariana, and most importantly more ann and anne... not to mention who wrote the marriage announcement?

    • @AmandaCostner
      @AmandaCostner  2 роки тому

      Agreed. Another commenter (not sure it was on this recap or one of the other recaps) said the real Thomas Sowden's family came forward and pitched a fit about his plotline, and this may have had to do with them dropping it. Not sure if it's true but if it is that will be such a weird dropped plotline. He was present at the casino dedication but if they do a S3 and don't talk about him being a murderer again it'll just be weird and confusing lol.

    I think one of the reasons Thomas sowden wasn't on, is because the real Sam sowden wasn't murdered. Didn't have a son Thomas, was a nice person and lived to a good age. And Sally Wainwright had to apologise to his realatives for what she wrote. Sam had 7 sons and 4 daughters and 2 sons became ministers and were friends of the Brontës. Always look forward to watching your comments, you're hilarious.

    I think the reason AL could not introducing AW to her friends had to do with rank. The reason AL could crossover to the higher society was because of her intellect and her oddities. M understood that S1 E7 because she could not go either. You look the bee’s knee’s in your top hat and keep them coming.

    • @asilver2889
      @asilver2889 2 роки тому +5

      Anne L was only one rank below lords & ladies, (aristocracy), Ann W was two. AL had been introduced via Norcliffes, and being only LG could not introduce any one else, and for her to ask that AW be introduced or invited would be unforgivable. Hierarchy was: Monarchy, then Aristocracy, then landed gentry, (AL), then 'new money' (AW), then others ranked below, not relevant. Class was critical and rigid. Note that AL observed others at dinner to check etiquette - what cutlery to use etc (early episode in s1). Fake it til you make it ....

    Love this Amanda! And love Gentleman Jack.
    I knew a woman irl that was so much like her. She was my parent’s age (they had me VERY late in life). She was a woman pilot in WW2. She was quirky, funny & tough as they come. She and her wife owned and operated a resort business in Colorado. I worked for them a couple of summers. My dad was an airline pilot, so he made friends with her (My folks had a cabin up there.)
    She lived her life boldly & unapologetically, even though it was not easy during her lifetime. She insisted on doing all the work at the resort herself (you should have seen her with a chain saw! 🤣) One time, she threatened to run a man down with a bulldozer over a land dispute. Thank goodness my dad was there to keep her out of jail!
    A famous quote I remember from her:
    “I like men just fine. I just don’t want to sleep with them.” 😂

    I think season two, as laborious as some aspects of it was, was both a pull back in scope with respect to the rise of the Industrial period, and a down in the weeds focus on how they as a couple negotiated those times. I’m not sure that I want a third season, not because of the quality of the project, but because Ann Lister died relatively soon thereafter. The grimness of the facts (STD’s, how she dies, and Anne Walkers subsequent institutionalization) that follow might be too depressing.

      @@ronhunt2254 you're right. It is possible that someone has studied AL and yet has managed to completely ignore the loving care she showered on AW over the years, ignored how she set AW's accounts in order, kept her from being ripped off from her family and driven into virtual insanity. It is possible that someone who has studied Anne Lister could have missed the fact that it was she who saw to it that Ann Walker got the finest mental and physical health care, not AW's "tribe."
      I suppose someone who studied the AL/AW relationship could have concluded that AL was out only for money. After all, AW paid for the lion's share of their travel and financed much of the improvements to Shibden. However that would fail to take into account that the Shibden money was borrowed and repaid with appropriate interest, so AW (or her estate) actually made money on those improvements. As for the travel, well, you got me there. Anne did like to live high on the hog, but these were experiences Ann would never have had if not for Anne, so I say, fair trade.
      Yes, you're right, I should not leap to conclusions, but by a preponderance of the evidence I stand by my original conclusion that the statement was made by one who had not studied Anne Lister.

    I hate to say I was a bit dissapointed with the last few episodes. Too much business stuff in the plot for me. I would have liked to see what happened to Mariana(that was so exciting)and like you mentioned the pig murderer. All very juicy plotlines that sort of just got forgotten. Still a good show but after waiting so long for the second season I am slightly underwhelmed :(

    So you know, of course, that this is based on a true story as reported in Anne Lister's diaries. Well **SPOILER ALERT** according to AL, she never again slept with Mariana after Christmas 1832, which is why you heard no more from her. Also, Anne never again cheated on Ann after that one final daliance with Mariana.

      Do you think it's possible she was unfaithful again and just didn't record it in the diaries? I have no reason to doubt except the "once a cheater..." thing lol

      @@AmandaCostner I doubt it because she recorded many occasions when she contemplated cheating and many times when she "incurred a cross" thinking of one woman or another over the years. Yet she remained faithful to Adney.
