That's my cousin on the left. Bob Bogle, worked in the cement business with him when we were young..great guy..he always said he was gonna,be famous. He made it.
Mel Taylor was one of the best drummers ever, taken before his time, Mel Taylor is the reason i learn't to play the drums, RIP Me and the rest of the band outstanding band
I saw them live around the time this was filmed. After the show they all stayed around for anyone who wanted to chat or have an album signed. All were very friendly. I got to talk with Gerry and Don for some time. They truly seemed to still love what they were doing!
Bob had such a chill stage presence, always kind of half-smiling/half-grinning, eyes scanning around the audience, while just absolutely shredding on that bass! great player. and Don's aggressive strumming and happy go lucky attitude was a wonderful foil. RIP to a pair of surf legends!
These guys are talented perfection guitarists and their drummer the best ever I think from the Surf music instrumental era of the 1960's. Those guitars talk and no need for vocalists. Pure magic you can close your eyes and see the Surfers riding those Waves in Waikiki with Diamondhead to the South and the Sun going down in the West from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on the Beachfront.
GREAT to see an actual LIVE version! With Don Wilson on rhythm playing a Jazzmaster (probably not the original kind of guitar used on this track), and the original lead player, Bob Bogle, playing bass! Cooks! I still play this one when I am well enough!
Watching this video of my childhood heroes, I saw an amplifier that I have and I have never seen one being used on film ever before. It’s that Peavey bass amp head.. i’m not sure, mine is called the BAM ..It has all the built in standard effects like echo reverb phase Flanger Delay, cabinet simulation, amplifier simulation, instead of numbers, it has LEDs that light up as you rotate The controls.. because of the ventures, in 1966 I bought myself a 1959 fender jazz master in a pawnshop for $175 I earned cutting grass, shoveling snow, doing chores for my mom , Setting bowling pins when I was 14. The finish on that Jazz Master was beat up like Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s guitar, not quite that bad. The back of the neck finish was completely worn off the full length of the neck. The headstock had cigarette burns on it, the brown case was a little beat up.. I kept that guitar 51 years. That was my guitar when I was playing in bands and smoky bars getting home at 4 AM smelling like an ashtray. I got tired of getting home that late two and three nights a week and then having to go to my day job at 7 AM sometimes so I quit playing out in the late 90s.. when I saw how much those guitars were selling for on eBay around 2016 or 17, I put it on eBay. Within two hours I got a question, what would I take for it right now?.. I thought he was a tire kicker so I threw a ridiculous I mean stupid high number at him.. five minutes later I got one word response from him..”SOLD” 1959 fender jazz master that I had for 51 years is now in Moscow Russia. The guitar player plays in a surf band and he had to have a guitar from the era of the Venture‘s to get that sound. He said he could not get that sound out of the replicas or the new JazzMasters. he sent me an email after he got to guitar and he was thrilled. Meanwhile, I was suffering from sellers remorse. I felt like I sold my dog. I sold my history. So I went out and bought another jazzmaster.. A Squier vintage replica or something like that I don’t know the exact name but it was made in Indonesia. To tell you the truth, feels like a better guitar.. I went out and bought my wife a brand new car with the money I got for my 59 jazz master
Thank you for this video! It's wonderful to see how the drummer interplays with the guitarists. I shall use this as a reference video for my next song.
Sadly all the "main" Ventures are gone now Mel Taylor in 1996 or 97 Bob Bogle in 09 Gerry McGee in 2017 (I think) Nokie Edwards in 2018 or 2019 Now Don Wilson in 2022
An Institution. So many pro’s know this to a tee. This was for charity. When musicians give there all, even with a stand in understudy pressed into service.
"We're going to do Hawaii Five-O with three musicians and one drummer"? Wha? I guess in the 60's drummers were not musicians. And the tempo on H5O started fast and slowed when the guitars started. Sped up again during the drum solo. Now I know what what he meant.
@@hx823 Yes, there is: ua-cam.com/video/MxT5sfhP_Y0/v-deo.html There's also one with him and Mel playing Wipeout: ua-cam.com/video/Ea843FEdAIU/v-deo.html Great videos!
The Mosrite Guitars sounded better for this song than the Fender guitars. Also liked when Bob played the lead on this. Noki played the lead at one time but, he used a bit more technical fill in between the notes. Bottom line: Bob did it just right and the way he used the tremolo bar.

Cool
One of my favorite groups
The Best 👌 👍.
His grave is in japan.🎌
Those guys 👦 were great😅
Young people make note - these are what real musicians sound like.
AND a Drummer 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a masterful rhythm player Don was. He’ll be missed each and every single day.
Don knows how to "torture" a guitar...
😲 Isn't that famous Drummer!? Mel Taylor!?
He can Rock that Kit!
He definitively outshines a pretty lifeless performance on lead here. Calling Nokie! Nokie we need you!
still tight. its beach time so why not some SURF ROCK!!
I grew up as a teenager with the Ventures, I can still play Walk Don't Run today and i'm 79. What a fun band.
So do I 58 Yr old fr Burma South East Asia.
Best Surf Rock Band in History 🎸
Mel Taylor was one of the best drummers ever, taken before his time, Mel Taylor is the reason i learn't to play the drums, RIP Me and the rest of the band outstanding band
They play for the angels now.
HE WAS AND WILL BE THE BEST DRUMMER THAT EVER WAS FOR TEN GENERATIONS
These guys were simply great. And doing "Hawaii Five-O" without the orchestration. Awesome!
They managed to keep the 50s /60s sound through the years....Bravo!
This band is so good. You don't need lyrics.
😲Dig the Greatest!
Mel Taylor famous Drummer!
He carries the Band!
Mel Rocked! RIP 🙏
The greatest group of 60 -70 ees till now we love them ,god bless.
Beautiful melodies so well performed. They bring to me so many remembrances of the past.
where does the time go? 1988 truly seems like yesterday in many ways. Much better times....at least, in the U.S.
Thank you U Tube, I lstn to a lot of this music before bedtime and I gi to sleep happy, I love it!
COPY THAT!
I love the Ventures! Phenomenal musicians! Yes, even the DRUMMER is a musician! LOL

For instrumentals, it doesn't get any better than these guys.
One of the first songs I learned to play on electric. I had their album "Play Guitar with the Ventures".
The first song I learned on the drums in the surf band with my cousins.
1988 I WAS IN JAIL!
Very cool

Love it!!! I love that raw guitar sound without all the distortion. Truly amazing!
I dont beleive this not a single peddle in sight awsome 😅
Fun, Classic tunes... & Book em Dano! 🙂😉🎶⚡💟🍁🐢🌊👍✌️
Great , often imitated never duplicated.
All Ventures all the time!
I love seeing a Fender bass played with a pick
Nokia Edward's, lead guitar will always be missed. Good Ole oklahoma boy too.
Always my Idols forever.
A1 drummer, two great selections by the ventures, I like how their shirts match their guitars which bring out the colours
Great musicians! 👍 💖
They started my guitar playing dreaming at age 10.
They did this 2 years after my son was born.😊
I love Ventures🎸
They were the best
Like ccr, timeless
this plays in my head whenever i am on the water, also when not on water
Love love love 💕💕 it 🤩💓

El de la batería es un crack 🙌
Learned to play bass to this stuff
Sadly all the "main" Ventures are gone now
Mel Taylor in 1996 or 97
Bob Bogle in 09
Gerry McGee in 2017 (I think)
Nokie Edwards in 2018 or 2019
Now Don Wilson in 2022
Mel Taylor died in 1996
Bob Bogle in 2009,
Nokie Edwards in 2018,
Gerry McGee in 2019 and
Don Wilson in 2022
@@srikwari360 Thanks for the list. Yes, all the original Ventures are dead. Next are the fans like me. lol
gone, but will never be forgotten!

The Best Forever !
Best music anywhere!

Fantastic
Bravo musicos maravillosos
Book 'em Danno !
They need to bring back the MDA telethon not sure who would replace Jerry and Ed but I'm sure someone could make it work
I knew it! Eric Johnson is a time traveler! 1:18

Insuperable
They probably already commented this but, the rythm guitar is way louder than the lead guitar
Turn up the gain on the lead guitar. It barely rises above the mix. I love their music though.

Do guys this good ever miss a chord?
Nope.
Max Weinberg what a great drummer
He's Mel Taylor, not Weinberg.

Mel’s son is still playing drums.
Yes, true.@@sssmre

FIVE oh

You can clearly see here that the Ventures took full opportunity to wear their white pants one last time before Labor Day passed.
"Three musicians and a drummer" Hahahaaa! Wonder if this was an intentional joke.
I think this song was on the radio when Iost my cherry.
Reminds me of telstar.
Quite the rhythm player...would've been nice to have heard the lead...
👍👍👍👍👍
Rhythm was louder than the lead..
I think the Hawaii Five-O theme is just fine without the orchestra.
3 musicians and 1 drummer 😂
