- David Harrison demonstrates how to make a simple rustic stool out of a small board and some sticks, using an old fashioned tenon cutter which you can make yourself and some basic tools.great beginners project
I am new to wood, want to do loads lol. Just found you and I can't stop watching... started at the beginning. You don't talk down to the watchers as if we are silly but as people, Thank you. My partner is an artisan in wood in France... but I have learnt so much from you. Given me confidence
When you said "It´s not rocket science, " you instantly got my attention. Too many complicated videos about every little detail are around. Thanks.
Hi Fabio , Thanks for your comment, Go for it rustic woodworking frees you from plans and allows you to go with the materials have fun David
Grateful thanks for sharing Dave.
You are an excellent teacher, clear and precise- making something rather complex very comprehensible.
As an established enthusiastic hobbyist I have learned a lot and am inspired to make my version of this stool.
UA-cam at its best🙏🏾🙏🏾
Cheers Jonny
Hi Jonny, Thank you for your kind words.I am very happy that you enjoyed the video and are inspired to make a Rustic Stool. Go for it it is a great type of woodworking that I really enjoy, you can go with the flow allowing the natural curves of the wood to decide how each piece will look. Have fun Happy Woodworking David
Great video, amazingly simple solutions that make so much sense. I was kicking myself at that leveling technique, could have saved me so much stress on two tables I've made before. Sick of youtube channels that show off 100s of thousands of pounds of equipment and cad software so this is really refreshing. Thanks
Hi Narnyfied thank you for your feedback in Happy you like my videos I would love to hear what video you would like me to make next Happy Woodworking David
Excellent explanation with simple tips including what to avoid... for a great result!
Pure raw talent right there and excellent clear eloquent explanation and easy to digest...
Simple techniques, I'm amazed!
After 6 years UA-cam has suggested me this informative video!
Hi Amy , thanks for your feedback I also wish that my videos got more exposure But better late than never!
Happy Woodworking David
@@RusticDavid Thanks
Hi David, greetings from Aotearoa New Zealand, really excellent video, I'm sure yuo will do well on youtube with content like that! I'm a retired carpenter and joiner and I find myself more and more interested in rustic traditional work, I've actually made a lot of stools, love making stools, very practical and useful, I,m going to try your mortice and tenon method, is that a forstner bit you used to drill your holes? Keep making great videos!
Hi ,Thank you for your input, yes it was a forstner bit but any wood drill will do,I love rustic work it frees you from the accuracy of milled wood joinery and allows you to go with the natural curves of the wood, have fun! Best wishes David
CAN YOU TEACH US
How to make a shaving horse from scratch.. that would be a nice video 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hi Mr Guppy this video shows ho I made a simple shaving horse with 2”x4” or 5cmx10cm soft wood a daw adrill and a screwdriver,I hope you like it Happy woodworking David
Simplicity in your videos really makes things easy...!
Thank you Amit, Happy Woodworking David
*Great video! All clear and interesting! I especially liked your tools! I too and sometimes make products out of wood and not only ;-)*
Nice video. Here are some points to consider
1. I think it's a good idea for better stability and appearance to have the legs splay out toward the ends, also. This could be accomplished just by angling the work on the drill press ramp.
2. Whether it's better to work a drawknife bevel-up or bevel down depends on the angle of the handles relative to the plane of the blade. With most of my drawknives I have better control bevel-up except when working inside radii, as when forming the sloping shoulder of a tenon.
3. An easy way to level a stool is to do it upside down on a flat surface after the protruding tenons are trimmed off. On just finds the shortest leg marks that length on the other legs. The length can be transferred with a mark on a stick; no ruler needed.
Thank you for your feedback Martin.Happy Woodworking David
Thank you for your hard work, my master, it looks perfect, it's a very nice seat, congratulations, I wish you success, my master 👏👏👏
Thank you for making this video, it is so informative. I want to make a slab table with some tree branches for legs , but I had no idea how to cut the tenons. It didn't even occur to me to use a draw knife.
Hi sam Glad you like the video please watch this one for an alternative way of making tenons

I can'not stress enough how glad I am that I found your channel. You explain everything so well. You tell us what this means and that means. You show us exactly how to do things and use the tools. Heck, I don't know what anything means or how to use the tools properly - this is invaluable to someone like me. It's like going to school for free! I absolutely love it. Thank you so much, David. What a gift. God bless you.
It is the ultimate beginner's woodworking channel
Liked the wedged together stool. Nice starter project. Good man. I like your style. Keep up the good work.
Just wanted to thank you. I love wood but am an absolute beginner in woodworking. Thanks to your youtubechannel i managed to make my first ever stool. I send you a picture on Instagram. Thanks Again.
Hey Remco ,Thank you for the pictures I’m So Happy that you made a stool and i was able to help you keep it up Happy Woodworking David
You see the Keith Floyd of woodwork, great vid👍🏻👍🏻
Merci David , a great video , how do you make the tenon tool ? Bonne continuation.
Hi Nano, this is the best example I could find I plan to make such a video hopefully soon the tenon cutter in the video is tapered you can make it parallel it wont make nice shoulders so remove material close to chosen diameter to reduce tear out on the shoulder, i have curved blades to cut the shoulder also best wishes David

Great, thanks for the guide. Happy to see this built without the fancy tapered mortice in other guides
you are a very good teacher.seems very approachable person.thank you sir.i always thought woodworking is interesting.
Thank You kind Sir!
Rustic David you're welcome sir.we here in the philippines likes to make stuff too with minimal tools.your vids are simply amazing.
I agree - David is by far the most personable woodworker on the internet, and also a fantastic instructor.
Looking forward to a video on Making a Tenon cutter! Btw it is an interesting looking web site you've got
my web site is very old !! and never been updated interesting is polite and kind of you !my facebook page has many pictures of mine and my students work google @rusticdavid for facebook page Happy woodworking david
Good video again.
Who felt that ahd to neg this? Cant you just move on if you don't like it?
Very nice job - both in presentation and in execution. I like how you kept it simple too. Here are some topics to consider adding to some related videos: site lines, drilling with a brace and auger bit, conical bits and tapered reamers, and the advantages of keying you wedge and using hide glue rather than yellow glue. You're an outstanding teacher!
Thank you Phillip , You sound very knowledgable! Maybe we should collaborate! Happy Woodworking David
Здравствуйте! Скажите,какой угол наклона для сверления?
what an informative video, i learnt some important steps, and great to see he gets straight to the point, unlike some american ones where you nearly fall asleep waiting for them to stop digressing and get to the point, hope you do more, i am keen to see them all, thanks,
Hi Rosco Thank you for your feedback im Happy to hear that you like my video there’s plenty more videos on my channel id be happy to hear what you think of them Happy Woodworking David
Thanks david,no rain today hopefully a go0d day for round my back carving have a nice 1 david.
great video, David, That's almost exactly how I make stools! There is a lovely natural visual rhythm to 'stick' legs, as opposed to turned stool or chair legs that I prefer (i have made both). Many Thanks.
Hi Macladilly yes i love the natural lines too and how turning the leg in its mortise can change the whole look of the piece thanks for your comment Happy woodworking David
I agree - I love the wavy rustic legs. Unfortunately, I haven't access to woodland at the moment, so I am making my first one with commercially turned dowelling, but David's has much more character in my view.
Thanks a lot. This is brilliant, exactly the video I was looking for, simple and clever, right to the point!! 😎 keep going, good luck with all the projects you do!
You're an excellent Teacher David. Thanks for the detailed instructions:)
My pleasure Sunny thank you for your comment Happy woodworking David
What if you don’t have a drill press?
Hi Crystal, you can use a hand drill, firmly clamp the work piece to a table with a scrap piece under the work piece ,place your bevel gauge next to the work piece and line the drill bit up with the bevel gauge and drill a hole, it doesn’t matter if you’re not accurate the sticks are crooked anyway .Go ahead and give it a go don’t get hung up about the angle it’s a fun project Happy Woodworking David
Great sir
Thanks for sharing. Very well explained 👍
Thank you Gilles i hope it helps Happy Woodworking David
I like the way you present the project. Simple and easy for us " non experts" can follow. Thanks
Thanks for the how to video.

Brilliant instructional video Dave, thanks very much.At last, someone who shows simply and clearly, how to achieve the angle for the legs, with plenty of tips and clear, straightforward instruction from start to finish; I really enjoyed this video, you are a superb and gifted teacher, my friend. If you lived in the U.K. I would be hot footing it to your workshops. Thanks again.

Don't know if it were Disney legends i feel so obsessed with this rustic look
Me too !!!For me its Fred Flintstone!
I'm site carpentry apprentice, but joinery has always interested me. This video inspired me to make a pretty much exact replica myself. Thanks David 👍
Hi Leo that’s great!! I love rustic furniture making it allows you play with the wood and let the natural curves and shapes give each piece its own unique beauty. Are you in Wales? I grew up in Pembrokeshire, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen!!! Happy Woodworking David
@@RusticDavid now I understand where you get the explanation of your sentences from. It seems to be a Welsh thing, and its very endearing.
Keep up the good work 🌺👍
Awesome, thank you for the leg tips. I'm building a stool and was having problems, but after watching you, those problems were fixed. 👍👍👍
Hi Mark I’m very happy to hear that my Video helped you Thank you for your feedback, Good luck with your project David

nice job and some good tips ,i like the pencil sharpener tool ,neat idea, thanks for showing us, Greetings from Wales UK. ive subd
Hi Indiana Glad you liked the video, I’m originally from Tenby area,Happy Woodworking David
What a wonderful video. I had accidentally discovered wedging for myself in order to rectify the occasionally ill-fitting joints which are inevitable for a beginner. But the way you do it here is much more systematic and rational than the way I was doing it. Also, your method for levelling the legs is such an elegant, simple solution. Thank you David
Hi Littlecicero Thank you for all your wonderful feedback what are you building presently? Have a great weekend David
Very good, thanks
Joel Palma very glad you liked it go and make a stool!
Parabéns 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I subscribed to hear that great accent. Nice.

Would love a video on how to build the shave horse
hi Jared a shaving horse is a popular project amongst my students ill see if i can video the next one
Thank you, i would love it. Many videos on youtube but none are detailed enough to help get me started.
such a good educational video! I will try to make one for my mom!
Go for it Ada you can do it!! Happy Woodworking David
Hello David, I have made several splined tenon stool leg projects. I never thought to test the spline in the mortise. So simple, so smart! When you were trimming the legs my brain thought that a 23 inch+ stool was pretty tall until I put 2 and 2 together and figured "aha, metric". Anyway, nice educational video, helpful. Thanks
Thank you yes i work in metric but the wood yard still sells wood by inch thickness ,width and length are metric!! figure that out !?Happy woodworking David
Bellisimo Trabajo, y explicacion muy clara. Gracias por compartir. Saludos desde Argentina.
Gracias Victor Happy holidays David
Excellent video on building a simple stool. Your instructions were clear and well thought out. You just made me confident I can do this. Thanks.
Hi Michael,go for it!! Its a a lot of fun!
Hey David! as usual you're brilliant and charming :)
I want to continue with my rustic rocking chair (the one we started at your shop) i need a tenon cutter!! please make a video on how to make it ! I have a spokeshave so i can use its knife maybe? (without ruining it?)
Hey Daniel !! how are you? ok im working on an easy shaving horse right now a simple tenon cutter video is long overdue ! i hope i dont keep you waiting too long! check this out meanwhile .ua-cam.com/video/CcdGuvczxgo/v-deo.html
hope to see you soon!
David is just awesome. I've been absent from the wood working scene but I'm getting back in. My specialty is mainly kids decor and furniture. The reason I love this channel is because David is the master of simplicity.
Hi there, Thank you for your feedback ! kids furniture is great fun with plenty of room for creativity i like adding secret compartments the kids love it!! Happy woodworking David
Nice 👍 I will try
Nice

A craftsman at work. It's the first time I've seen the contraption you're sitting on. Does it have a name, and do you have a video or link for how to build one?

Loved the video. Great to listen to good man.
Thank you Alessandro im glad you enjoyed it Happy Woodworking David
lovely stuff keep it up :D
Thanks for the video. I like the personality, and process, fun voice too. The camera work unfortunately is barely tolerable. Seemed to be out of focus as often as not, and a bit jumpy. Not complaining, just trying to give feedback. Thanks again, i'll look for the video about making the tenoning tool
Thanks for your feedback Troy i haven't made that video yet unfortunately i nhope to get to it soon Happy woodworking David
Perfect! You have explained fully -and clearly- several areas where I was struggling. Thank you. A video this clear and concise takes advance planning. I appreciate not only that you share your skill, but also that you value the viewer's time. I will subscribe!
not sure why "and clearly" is struck through; I had intended to emphasize it, not delete it! :p -Megan
Megan Seklig thank you for commenting I hope that this video helps you go and make something all the best Happy Woodworking David
Those crazy tools really gave me a good idea of what woodworking was like at the time of the Black Death.
Hi Stephen good to hear from you again,The first known drawing of a shaving horse is from 1500 and something my history isn’t so good but maybe its the same period,They needed lots of carts to haul away the bodies so the wheel Wright would have appreciated a shaving horse to help keep up with demand!!
Have a great weekend David
thank you. I was making a similar chair and saw this video. I'm curious about the tenon cutter, so I'm thinking of making one by imitating the shape of the blade. It probably won't be a success right away, but I thought it was a great idea.
Hi you can copy the blade shape this creates the hollow shoulder not too difficult a task but be sure to anneal the blade after tempering so it doesn’t snap (speaking from experience) good luck
@@RusticDavid thank you. This is where I processed and bent the tipped saw. I'm using the translation function to read the replies, so I'm not sure if I'm understanding the meaning properly, but does this mean that a softer blade would be better suited as a tool for applying force?
Hi Mr David! Love your personality, style and execution. One word of hopefully constructive criticism - the camera work needs to be improved for clarity, less quick zoom in and outs and overall jitters. Other than that, you've inspired me as I too prefer working with imperfect lines and natures wonderful foibles. Such character and a story behind each piece. New subscriber here :)
Hi Lito thanks for the feedback Point taken. All the best David
i like the camera work. great job
really really loved it! very simple good explanations and no alien-tools i will never be able to buy! thanks a lot
Thank you Cristian Iznardo Rosales go ahead and make a stool Happy woodworking David
I love this ! So good. So nice. Awesome!!
Thanks Hardy glad you liked it, give it a go it’s very enjoyable work you can whittle the tenons with a knife and round them off with sandpaper or a rasp if you don’t have the tools in the video Happy woodworking David
very nice stool and great job on the video. Thanks
Thank you Richard Happy holidays David
Super, now I know what to do with all the rounded slabs left over, after boards are cut from the log.
Idea, - Tapered pin legs. And tapered the top of the hole, so the wedged out leg, can never go back out backwards. ( like a sledge hammer hole is tapered )
Also your presentation was great. Nice smooth rhythm to your talk.
thank you very much for this essential information and techniques. toda raba!
Hi Daniel glad you like it ,bervakashah David
