John, I just wanted to thank you for making this video. This was my first ever project and I wanted to thank you for showing how to do it using very basic tools. It was great fun and most of all has given me the confidence to try (slightly) more complicated projects.
Great to hear, I'm glad you found it useful, keep on making!
Exactly the video I was looking for! Watched plenty of videos and they all involved lathes, planers, table saws ect. All out of my budget and tools I didn't have. Thanks for making a project the beginner can get their teeth stuck into!
Really concise and informative too, without making it too complicated. Really appreciate how accessible you've made this!
Fair dues John but I think I will stick with the power tools I was sweating just looking at you 😂
Ha ha ha come over to the dark side!
@@JohnMcGrathManInShedShinto rasp is great but have you got a draw knife in your tool cabinet? Great for taking away big chunks when shaping. Verrry satisfying to use as well.
Excellent instructions and always was mystified at what angles the legs should be slanted to the seat. Love the way you used the tapered wedges to be 90 deg. to the the grain.
John do you know we all had to make stools like that in woodwork class in school back in the 70s ( god I'm old) brings back memories. And I was just reading through the comments a I got one of those brain fart ideas how about a build of between yourself and tommy eire workshop hand tools v power tools it could be like terminator man vs machine. What do you think
That sounds like a great idea 👍
@@denischadwick4558 it would look as if someone doesn't agree.
Thank you , lovely little project very simple explained and made .Perfect for my three grandchildren!
I like money and effort saving advice. Keep doing what you do 👍 Same as Eire Workshop! Ecellent videos!
Thanks, will do!
Nicely done! You are, indeed, fortunate to have a nice workshop; you are even more fortunate to have a young daughter to play with the things you make. Way to go, Dad! 👍
Cheers Jerry.
Wonderful little rustic stool. You finally mention the most important tool you used at the very end of the video, your work bench.
Glad you liked it!
Nice project John I can remember an old milking stool in the dairy at home from my childhood 😀. Looking forward to the build off as suggested in another comment 🙂🙂
Cheers Paul
This is a great project for woodworking class in school too! 😀👍 There are loads of basic stuff that you get to learn along the way making this little stool (especially grain direction!), and those skills will be extremely useful going forward! 😀
Hello sara
I want to start a furnisher making class in January. I only have a circular saw and sanders that was my fathers. I also have a hand saw that I bought. That’s it I can’t afford expensive power tools, only hand tools for now. This video was very helpful in showing me what hand tools to buy and how to use them. Thanks!
Glad you liked it Andrew
I made one of these at school, all hand tools. It didn’t look like a dog had chewed it, it looked like a dog had made it.😂 one of your best videos John.👍
Thanks Alan, I'm glad you enjoyed that one.
Thank you, a simple little stool build I can modify to make stools for working on the dirt bikes, washing dogs, working under sink, etc. Great practice. Once I have 3 or 4, maybe I’ll start using them vs squatting and kneeling all the time. The old back and knees hate those two.
Absolutely!! should have sad that in the video
Wonderfulfully demonstrated and very
Easy to follow and understand.
I'm encouraged to make a stool for my grandbaby!!! Thank you.
Thanks Hettie, I'm really glad you found it useful. Enjoy making your stool!
Well done, John McGrath.
What a great stool build! Perfect for what I am looking to do: simple and sturdy.
Good John and thanks for you
Ah, the little 3 legged stool, one of my favourite things...I did sit on one of those as a child and milked a cow at my cousin's farm. They look so cute. Great video John!!!
Excellent video John, very clear instruction. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
You have set a great example. A few sharp hand tools and you can make a great deal. Just think of the bench tools you used to have in the school workshop.
Can you make an exhaustive list of all tools, big and small, used to build this stool? I am brand new to this. Much appreciated!
I made a one legged milking stool from firewood a few years ago. It did the job but is now split and unusable. Thanks for this. Definitely going to use some of my scraps to try this out.
Jon I made a three Leggate stall at my Bodgers group last year when I first went. It was the first thing they teacher to do. It is a piece of ash cut in half to make the top and then three legs out of Chessnut. This was done by a Frodo split log into four, then axed three of them saving one for spares just in case you cock up. And once you’ve semi rounded off with the axe you then take it to the shavers and you’re annoyed it you’re knifed it round to make a billet for the legs. Once used a hand or gap of 2 foot long for the free holes for the leg to pass through you then shave one end to make it go through the hole. Since I’ve done that I’ve let it dried and settle and then I’ve linseed it to give it a waterproof and lovely finish.. I’m trying to see if I can send a picture of it but I’m having a job to I have to get my daughter with site today. But another little great demo. But also you can use a round plane which they use for chair making they are pretty good.
great little stool great starting point for anyone new to the hobbie
Awesome , just like Paul sellers stool , thank u for sharing 😊👌 .
oh I like that tape measure trick.
Nice little stool there John. Thanks for the video.
You are welcome
Very good enjoyed ever moment
Thanks Beverly
Yes, it IS perfect, that thing will outlast us!...Amazing what you did with some basic C16 studding timber. I'm making something similar this w/e from Oak. It's going to be a little coffee mug table, so will be a little flatter on the top. As much as I love the idea of hogging it all out by hand, I'll be using my lathe! ;)
excellent tutorial, appreciated thanks! love how you've made it look simple! rasps ordered :)
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks John. I really enjoyed that project.
No problem 👍
I just made my first stool like this. It was fun, I used a spokeshave for the first time too. What vices do you useon your bench? Great video, thanks for sharing! You have given me ideas for my next stool.
Nice
You've given me an excuse to buy a spoke shave.
Great stuff really liked this as it keeps it super simple and accessible to everyone. Thanks so much
You're very welcome!
Making this next week
Nice!
Thank you John. Great project
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice job john,i might make one it would be handy when fitting door locks,
Good to see one of our own on UA-cam
It would be perfect for that Liam
Hi John, congrats and thanks for sharing this video. Quick question, what kind of timber did you use for this stool? Just regular pine tree? Is there other type you woudl suggest?
Really excellent work, John! It looks beautiful! 😃
Well done!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Great video John, Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Very nice build. Would be interesting for you to have commented how to hold the legs for shaping for those that do not have bench dogs, especially when it comes to shaping the wood where I find it harder to clamp around the wood and end up damaging it.
Amazing! I very much want to try this out!
Enjoyed the vid John, hope you will have fun with your woodworking adventure. Don't mistake luck with hard work that allowed you to throw money on the new hobby (I personally dislike when people downplay my hard work and call results "luck"). Regards from the other side of Ireland ;)
Thanks 👍
Nice, but the wedges should have been at a slight angle rather than parallel to each other.
That's fantastic! Great video, I learned a lot on this.
Glad it was helpful!
That was great
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very cool John. Was thinking of making a small work stool for the polytunnel to help with the dodgy knee but this might be a nicer option. Thanks as always !
No problem Shorty 👍
What finish did you use and why?
Really appreciate your videos! Simple, clear explanations every step of the way
6:01 i dont know hand saw could do that. Nice tips
Lovely work, could have sworn it was ash from the thumbnail
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi John nice video thanks bringing things back to basics 😊. Had to check back to see if the build off idea in the comments was good or bad 🤣🤣🤣. I think that is more of an American thing 😀.
I haven't time to scratch myself Denis lol 😆 but I will definitely meet up with Tommy at some stage
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed 👍👍😂😂
Nice little project John 👍 could you do me a favour and show how to set up a Luban spokeshave, I'm damned if I can get mine to work properly ( not holding my mouth right ) cheers,. Regards Jim.
Shintoooooooooooo
hi john love watching your videos just can you please do a video on how to measure and cut for a mitre just bought a mitre saw and want to make one of your planters thanks.
Will do
Awesome!
Glad you liked it 👍
Hi John. We know you just wanted to use the Festool sander😂
🤣
would this work scalled up? maybe 2:1?
a, i might make my GF one of these to save her knees ;)
You legend 😂🤣🤙
You have an awesome shop mate, I subscribed a few weeks back and you have top content 👍🏻
Much appreciated
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed I appreciate what I’ve managed to learn from watching your channel mate😊 still relatively new to the game so it’s good having a place I can pick up tips.
I don’t always do the same projects but, I’ve used plenty of what I’ve picked up in other areas of the job 👍🏻😀
Hi John, thanks for the video! I love this little stool. Your method of explaining things is so nice. I also like the hand-tool approach very much. Question on the wedge cuts on the legs: Do you make the wedge cut in the leg with or across the grain of the leg?
cross grain, although its not as important as the tenon is contained and not as likely to split, you can drill a hole where the saw cut stops in order to arrest any split that might continue when installing the wedge.
Why dont u have a table saw?🤔
I don't need one
Where did those spoke shaves come from?
Workshop Heaven
I dont believe you showed us how to level the legs. Or did I miss something?
20 years accumulating? Did you start at 8 years old?! 😂
Ha ha I wish, I'm 41 now 🤫
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed had no clue pal, you look great
Your sawing the legs reminded me of the amazing Dick Proenneke. All I will say is go to ~2:00 of this: ua-cam.com/video/cTHLpA4267Q/v-deo.html
If it appeals to you, I *highly* recommend the entire ‘Alone in the Wilderness’ DVD as it’s mind-blowing what the man did. His making of the door to his cabin is worth the price of admission alone. That he started it in his mid-50’s merely adds to the wonder.
Not liking all the adds it takes from the videos.
I don't control the number of adds Ann that's down to youtube, honeslty I think they are pushing people towards youtube premium
Oh..i thought you can control the ads cause you get paid for each ad that is shown on your videos.
@@annc3628 no I can only allow or not allow adds, the amount and the adds you see are unique to you
