The Disney Live Action version of the legendary "Lion King" had critics and regular moviegoers on seriously opposing teams. Some critics felt that remaking of the movie was a cold-hearted Disney cash grab.
Today, we'll take a look at some of the major changes between The Lion King versions in 1994 and 2019. In particular, we'll go over the darker stuff that the creators didn't see fit for the remake. Believe it or not, the original saw some controversies, and the remake felt it necessary to avoid them.

Ok, this is a great video. But I feel that you left out something very important. Something that they left out of the remake. The single most important line in the original. The line that sends the biggest message. "Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it". Rafiki was supposed to be the the "Teacher". The one that changed Simba. But in the remake, he was a background character with very little dialog and little importance.

Why didn't they keep Scar's mane black? There are lions in real life that have black manes.
I read a book "The more older the lion is, the darker the mane"
Scar if he was real would not have a black mane.
#1 he is a outcast lion: unhealthy lions will actually have grey to or orange mane.
#2 scar does not have high testosterone levels: a lion can only also have high levels if it has a high amount of testosterone can have a black mane. So technically mufasa and simba are the ones who are supposed to have black manes

There are also cases of young lions with black manes, namely, the recently murdered Xanda..son of Cecil the lion, who had a naturally dark pelt. Granted neither Cecil nor Xanda were as dark as Scar but probably got as realistically close as one could.

Some people look too deep into things. This is the first I've heard of a supposed "tendency to give their villains a homosexual slant." Not all of them have a love interest because it's not relevant to their character, and the ones that do are most definitely heterosexual.
As for the hyenas, I'm sure they chose the actors they did because they sounded great in the auditions. They were written to be comedic low-lifes regardless of who was eventually chosen. The complainers conviently forget that both the heroes and villains are a mixed group. Did they forget that James Earl Jones voiced Mufasa?

In the original, Shenzi did show she was the leader of the hyenas. When Banzai starts complaining to Scar about the lack of food, Shenzi stops him and says to him, "Let me handle this." She also stops Banzai from attacking the wildebeest in the gorge.

I find the death sadder in the remake because it looked like a nature documentary of a lion cub seeing his dead father and grieving the way a cub would. Makes it more heartbreaking 💔

I cried in both the original and remake. To me, it was as emotional as when watching an animal in real life grieve. They can't do human expressions but you can still feel it in their actions etc.

I love both editions. I prefer the older one, but the new one did several things right, giving us new scenes and giving us new fodder (Like the love triangle between Scar, Mufasa and Sarabi, Developing Nala more etc.) I do have a major problem with the new one though:
SCAR ISN'T THE SASSY, EVIL BADASS HE WAS IN THE ORIGINAL!!! I mean, yeah he's evil and....evil in the new one, and a bit more cunning, but he doesn't have the sassy, sarcastic lines anymore and I miss the old Scar TwT

Of all the changes and complaints that where listed. The one that makes the lease sense is the "can you feel the love tonight" one. First you can see Simba land at an angle with only his upper half ontop of her. Second, Nala is laying on her side as shown by the fur coloration on her stomach. Third, the two pinning each other is used as a simple of there bond through the move. Fourth, NALA WAS TELLING SIMBA HOW SHE FELT!!!!! It was a kiss on the cheek.

Personally I got so upset when the took the song be prepared out as that is forever going to be my favourite scene. The drop of Banzai and Ed really sucked too as I loved those characters so much.
Something that I think you missed was that they completely scraped the sarcastic and dry humour that Scar has, witch in my opinion takes from his character as his humour was a big part of things. [Ex; there is a scene where he sings to the skulls "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts."]
Other than that I'll still hold the original over the remake, sorry Disney it's just not the same lion king.

I think they should elaborate on Scar’s past since it’s obvious that his backstory has changed from the original, and use that to open into Kovu, reinforce that Kovu is NOT his son and then kinda throw the basic storyline of TLK2 into the sequel.
I wouldn't mind that. Maybe they'll number 2 will be better. I just found the charecters in the new version had so much less personaility, everyone was so serious :/

Uh no. The remake was terrible, and no classic movie should be remade into a live action movie.
The title made me feel like I died because I knew it before my eyes
They could have made Scar into a melanistic lion, which would essencially turn his coat black. There are darker shades of lions, they just aren't as common.
People are 100% more sensitive, and not always in a good way either.
The choice to go with hyper realism is fine, but they lost out on so many emotions, having to rely on facial expressions and body language, that they still didn't use to its full potential.
What irks me the most is yhe lack of feeling, they might as well have done what BBC, I think it was, that filmed real lions for a movie called Pride, and just add lip movements. That movie has more feeling/soul than this new subpar to the original Lion King. It really didn't need to be remade.
Also, whoever decided to have Beyonce be Nala made a mistake in my eyes. Sure she did a good job with the voice, but she butchered the song. There was no harmony in it, and it's supposed to be a love song, yet it sounds more like she tried to sing it as one of her own.

When my family saw it, I saw that Refiki didn't have his staff. I shrugged it off thinking Disney couldn't figure out how to make Refiki walk realistically with his staff. Was a little disappointed the stick whacking Simba wasn't going to be in the movie (which was something they should of kept).
Then when they go to confront Scar, Refiki reaches into that hole in his tree. In my mind I said, "I swear if Refiki pulls out his staff". Then he does. So glad most of the theater was empty because I had a mini seizure in my seat.
By the way I hate how they changed Be Prepared. That was what I was excited to see the most. I was disappointed.

Making the hyenas smart was actually a bad mistake on Disney's part because it broke several rules for henchmen. What's next a smart Kronk in a remake of The Emperor's New Groove? I hope not.
It might be my knowledge of animals as a kid that made me think Shenzi was the leader or maybe the books. There was no doubt in my mind that Shenzi was the alpha female of her clan. Banzai and Ed I saw as less as her equals and more as her subordinates since she used to tell them what to do or attack them when they did something wrong

I dont know if any1 saw this but when scar abd simba fought scar and threw him of the top of pride rock he shouldve had instantly died whilst mufasa shouldnt have died because 1 the gorge was at least the same height of not smaller and 2 the Wildebeest were in the way. Any1 see that?

I think a lot of these changes were unnecessary, though giving Nala more screentime was fine and giving Shenzi a more dominant hierarchical role was okay (though I see no reason to have replaced Banzai and Ed, who could have just been portrayed as more deferential to her).
They were *always* "deferential" to Shenzi; it just wasn't spelled out in TLK 94 b/c back then, apparently, Disney thought that kids and their parents could catch onto subtle cues. Shenzi was ALWAYS in charge of the hyenas... (rolleyes)

Disney has totally changed from when I was young
After finally being able to watch Lion King 2019 for myself, I can see why people weren't happy with the movie and why there were complaints about the lack of expression. But what people don't understand is that the new movie wasn't meant to be as cartoony as the original so of course it's going to be less expressive. I don't understand why people thought Mufasa's death was not moving. It moved me to tears because of the way Simba pawed at Mufasa when he approached his lifeless body, and bunted him. That's accurately expressive for ANY feline. We've become so used to the anthropomorphic nature of these characters that we expect nothing less; we expect human emotion where it wasn't fully intended. That's why someone drew a cartoony face over Simba's realistic one. I thought the redraw looked great but after seeing the movie with my own eyes, I realize it was unnecessary.
Sure, maybe the remake was too but both movies are distinct in their own way, even when carrying the same title. Why do y'all want a rehash of a cartoony movie in a realistic setting? It'd look too uncanny. Now, don't get me wrong, lots of people didn't even want the remake, and that's fine, but I enjoyed the new LK for what it was and I don't think it should be faulted for being different from the original. Some things were removed, yes, but other things were added that I think spiced the movie up for the better; considering its realistic approach. For example, I really appreciated how it explained how Nala escaped Scar's rule to get help; that was extremely funny on Zazu's part!
The I Just Can't Wait To Be King segment was odd but I'll let it slide. I knew that Be Prepared was originally taken out and I am glad they kept it in, even if changes and additions were made. Speaking of the Hyenas, it was cool to see their hierarchy and intelligence more appropriately displayed here. It was a little weird to see prey animals anthropomorphized but it was also kinda neat to see their interaction with grown up Simba. Oh! The "kiss" between he and Nala was a bit more subtle in the new movie, I liked that. I honestly did miss watching them play in the water though haha! The Circle of Life scenes in the beginning and the end were not nearly as moving as the original but it still made my heart swell.
Not gonna lie, I am slightly disappointed Rafiki didn't annoy Simba with "Asante Sana Squash Banana" and bonk him on the head with his stick but the choice to give him mostly Xhosa lines shocked me - in a good way! It suits him! The part where Simba sees his father in the clouds still gave me chills. And the feels - I miss my dad... I also miss the cool transition scene where Simba ran home but that's okay. Oh yeah! I REALLY liked how they showed how the heck Simba suddenly went from nearly falling off the edge of Pride Rock to leaping at his Uncle - gripping his mane with his claws made total sense! The ending fight with Simba and Scar was a bit shorter but it made up for that by having Nala and Shenzi fight. I almost forgot! Scar tells Simba to practice on his roar in both movies but it felt more deliberate and conniving in the remake. I really got a kick out of that.
I also enjoyed being able to see which quotes stuck and what was removed for the sake of realism. If I had ONE complaint, it was the choice to keep in "fart" in Hakuna Matata. I mean, I kind of understand, it would be too cartoony for Timon to shut him up the way he does in the original in this setting. But... as interesting was it was to insert it in here, it made me very uncomfortable. I wish they had somehow worked around that to keep it true to the original without making it too cartoony
You are those rare ones that except the movie for what it is and do not go bashing it to shreds, becuase it is not like the original. 👍
@@pikapower2114 Yup! I am usually very open-minded about the things I love. I was ecstatic to see this movie from when it was announced - same with the Sonic movie and Kim Possible movie (which I enjoyed)!
Unless a trailer flat out offends me, I always reserve judgment for a movie after I've watched it. I just don't understand why anyone would judge a movie on trailers when trailers can easily not represent what the movie actually shows (which can be bad, in most cases). I dunno, it's just a trailer, not the whole movie. That's like judging a book based on the snippet on the back describing the plot. Sure, if it doesn't interest you, that's fine! But no one says "This book is gonna suck" after reading said snippet before they open the book so why do that with a movie trailer? Anyway, that's just my opinion. I like giving movies the benefit of a doubt and a chance to impress me. My mom always said, "Give it 20 minutes". I've just lived by that rule and I wish others did too. It's made me way more open-minded.
Now i understand why... I was so pissed off when people hated the movie because of the facial expressions.
