- In this video, Nick and Yvan go head to head: both using the Gold Standard Polish and Gold Standard Waffle Pad, but both using different machines.
Yvan uses a rotary, and explains his technique.
Nick uses a dual action polisher, and uses his normal finishing process.
Who gets shinier paint?!

It took me a year after first hearing from Yvan the rotary finishes better to believe. Yvan is 100% correct.
We've all been there, I'd say 9.9/10 he usually is 🤣
Thank you
Try the rotary method in sticky paint, I dare you. Both tools have their place.
I have wet sanded fresh clear coat with 3000 grit and have never been able to bring up the gloss with a da like I can with a rotary. Is this typical?
Yes
You sold me! Just bought a Harbor Freight Hercules cordless Rotary Polisher. It was FREE with the purchase of two 5AH batteries and since I wanted the batteries....
It is $99 tool only. Used it today - it is really great, very smooth, not heavy and nicely balanced. I will be replacing the grease like Apex Detail always does - LOL!
Excellent
How lucky is Nick to be able to work with the very knowledgeable Yvan!!!! Fast forward 1 yr and Nick will be a master with the rotary also!!!
Nick here… I just one stepped with rotary and gold standard polish/waffle pad…then coated with our ceramic coating. It looks awesome:)
Great video. Perfectly answers the questions I have/had for awhile now. I love detailing my car but to be honest I have been unable to do a complete detail. As I was afraid of cutting the paint as the ol' tales tell. But this puts my mind at ease. You all are amazing and have a new follower.
Thank you
Very recent rotary convert here after seeing Yvan's rotary video elsewhere. I'm have been an enthusiast detailer for 13 yrs with MULTIPLE DA polishers in my arsenal. This week experimented with rotary, waffle pads, 600rpm, and system 4000 pad washer. All I can say is WOW!! I'm a convert and this is a mind blower and total shift in polishing mindset for me. Thanks Yvan!
Thank you!

thinking of going down this route do you cut with Da or rotary
@@broncoupe I'm still testing but I tried cutting with the DA and finishing out with the rotary with excellent results.
@tedrarrick165 personally, I've been cutting and finishing with a rotary all my life (basically 30yrs detailing professionally and on the side) and imo you get much better results. in the end, the paint seems to look a lot deeper and glossier when using a rotary. sure I do things differently though since I clay bar the whole vehicle as I wash it. after I use Meguires heavy compound with a white wool pad, then switch out to Meguires Glaze with a different white wool pad then use a hand glaze. once I do all that I do a ceramic coating and paint (especially black) looks really deep and glossy. even with all the new tech out I'm still doing things old school but in my defense detailing is basically a hobby for past 10yrs so haven't kept up on all the new products but definitely want to try out this DIY Gold Standard Polish. Imo though, nothing will ever beat using a rotary for buffing.
@@richardsalinetrojr1957 Sounds like you are a pro with the rotary! So far, have just used a polish pad and a finishing pad with a polish and an AIO with great results. Don't have the pad or experience yet to cut with it.
Been using the pad washer between each pass. really like the simplicity and smoothness of rotary at 600 rpm
Awesome. Thanks guys. Only thing that might have made this better would have been readings from a gloss meter. Doesn't matter to me, I'm a "finish with the rotary" convert. Love the results and I finish the day without my hands buzzing from the 21mm.
Great point, but even Nick could see the difference ( he wasn’t acting).
@@diydetailofficial hahahaha! I believe it. I've seen it on my test panels too. Never bothered to buy a gloss meter though 😊👍
I have an old rotary buried somewhere in my garage. I’ve recently been converted from a once every 6 week plus car washer, to a once a week weekend warrior ( I can’t call myself a detailer ) utilising all the latest products. I always fund my hobbies very well, and as such have been thinking of adding a DA to my arsenal. After watching this I don’t think I’ll bother, I’ll dig my polisher out and give it a whirl sometime this month.
We’ve owned our car since new 6 years ago, it’s never been through a carwash so the paint is fairly good, no swirls, but I’m looking forward to seeing just how much shine I can get out of her. Thanks for the inspiration guys 👍
Thank you!
Awesome! Have fun
Well vibration is a big concern for me with a neck issue and Yvan suggested rotary. I’m a total beginner so I thought I wasn’t good enough to try, but after watching more of ur videos maybe I can do it as a first machine polisher. Thanks for all the content!
You can do it!
Me too. Total beginner here. Great video.
Thank you for showing in real time, it's really helpful to see the actual technique in real time.
Thank you for watching it!!
So I was looking to buy one or the other for my black 2009 Ctsv and noticed you were working on the same car!! Took your advice and I’m going with the rotary.
Thanks guys
Sounds like serendipity! lol
This was great. I’m about to use a B&D rotary and I am nervous. Thank you so much!!!
Good luck!
Yvan has been very convincing over the years...just received my Flex PE14 today and can't wait to polish with it this weekend!
Congratulations. It's the luxury sedan of the rotary polishers. It can also mow gel coat all day alongside much bigger noisier machines.
Please let us know how you like it.
Excellent way of describing it David
@David Ruggles thanks, David! Glad to hear it. Looking forward to it!😁
@@davidruggles996What would you refer to the Milwaukee rotary as 🤔
Interesting stuff. Please create a video using the rotary on uneven surfaces:fenders hood, etc. explaining speed direction angles.

Big fan of the rotary myself, I've yet to try your Gold standard polish with it. I've tried it with a Da and was very impressed .
Good to know!
Dope video guys always learning something new with you guys. 👍👍👍

I'm getting hooked on the rotary! I'm using an old one my grandpa has kept up with and it really does give more gloss. I also really really really like the gold standard system! Thank you Nick and Yvan!
That is awesome!
I have a really old and heavy 2 speed Ingersoll rand. Still works but damn it's heavy.
I've been using rotary for 10 years. Everytime I get done it looks fantastic. Then after a couple days it gathers some dust and sun comes out and it looks EXTREMELY bad. I've watched a few of your videos now so maybe I got knowledge of why. I never cleaned my pads, went until the polish was dry thinking that is when the magic happens, didn't know the pad does the cutting and did the lift off technique because if I didn't the rotary would be jumping up and down. I get a forced rotation makita polisher today so I'm excited to see what I can do from learning from you and Pan.
The pad and polish definitely make a difference.
Y’all are good stuff, adding to my cart!
Please do! And we have a sale this weekend as well:)
I wasn’t able to get the polish to come out of the sprayer for the longest time, are there any tricks I could use to get it to go through the tube quicker?
Amazing! Never seen a demo like this before. Can you achieve better D/A polisher results with a 2 step approach? A compound + polish correction? Thnx.
If Yvan wants to cut, he will use a dual action machine with wool but always likes to finish with the rotary and a foam pad 👍
So would I be correct to say that dry flatting and compounding is good with the da but final polish with rotary?
Correct
U guys are good together and waffle pad are some much easy to use when using a machine alot
Thank you
Hi exelent video, as always. I have a question: what battery you recommend me for my Milwaukee DA cordless polisher ?
The lightest one that will do the job.
I’ve always used a DA polisher because I’ve always been told when using a rotary to do that “plane taking off” method so I try not to use one when possible. But I use a blue wool pad on the rotary and gray foam for finishing with it but it doesn’t have a backing plate. You screw the pads on. I’m just curious if those kind of pads are good to keep flat on the surface like what Yvan is doing in the video or if you still have angle it upwards to cut and finish.
Keep it flat.
Thank you....Awesome review
Glad you liked it
Came from 7484 to 12,15,21mm throw then settled in forced rotation and rotary. I can say aside from producing great results i have less prep, im not as tired and cut my time compounding and polishing. You just got to give urself time and the right technique on using rotary. And as Ivan have pointed out which not mentioned with other videos is the noise that the DA produces is far more greater than the rotary.
Excellent! Yes it’s much more relaxing.
How do you go about finishing our the small intricate parts around door handles and weird body lines with the big rotary? Is there a 3 inch rotary or something?
Yes you can use a smaller backing plate, but most areas can be done with a 6 inch pad.
What backing plate are you using for the rotary. I can't find any plate other than an official replacement part from Milwaukee.
This is from Lake Country Manufacturing.
I only wish you had larger 7 inch pads to try on my rotary. Been using the Gold Standard polish since it came out with my Rupes Pads (Rupes has more sizes) and it is a great combo for most of the polishing I do.
With a 6 inch backing plate you can use our pads.
I can’t wait for my rotary. I’ll be purchasing one 🙏. I’m trying to do my research how much heavier is the corded flex vs uncorded. I’m motivated to use one 💪 great content as always.
Yvan’s favourite is the flex PE 14
Yvan’s favourite is the flex PE 14.
@@diydetailofficial is Yvan switched to milwaukee cordless rotary fully yet or he still prefers the flex pe 14 corded ?
Ivan would you recommend the rupes rotary or the flex rotary? The rupes has slightly lower rpm’s (450) in comparison to flex (600) and I know you mention the lower the better.
The flex for its superior ergonomics.
Dang ima try this tomorrow thank you for the tips
Please let us know how it goes in our facebook group

That doesn’t look like the backing plate that comes with the Milwaukee rotary tool. Can you tell me if it’s just the model or is it an alternative that appears to to give the tool more battery clearance so you keep the pad flat on the surface?
we love that yellow backing plate, it's from Lake Country Manufacturing, a 6-inch rotary backing plate
Will you have more towels. Like the low nap black with the red trim towel. ?
We have new towels on the way.
Thanks... having the same question!
Hopefully this answered it for you
Can you guys go over what to do with trim pieces on a car? The flat black parts of various cars. My 2022 WRX for example, those fenders yikes. Do i have to tape them off?
No need to tape off trim, in fact, with our yellow gold waffle pad, we like to polish the trim using the Gold Standard polish 👍
Appreciate the real-time technique
Thanks
Hi, I tried finishing with a mini rotary and 3 inch backing plate for the first time. Have to say, was a bit grabby and was taking me all over the place so I stopped. I know it would be hard to say, what could I have been doing wrong??
A few possibilities, dry pad, flat pad, too much pressure, too high speed, too much product on the pad.
@@diydetailofficialThank you! Will keep these things in mind.
How much pressure are you applying down on the paint as you polish? I think I remember in another one of your videos its not much at all. Also can you do a vid of polishing a boat gel coat?
No pressure at all. It’s on our to do list
Yvan, at what speed do you use the rotary to do polishing? If I remember correctly, do you recommend speed one?
The lowest speed possible
Always used a DA but this really makes me want to try out a rotary and see. Looking at the 2 it seems like the rotary is just a much smoother and peaceful experience
Correct
for the rotary how many rpm is good to use with?... whats the range?... i have a grinder which claim to be able to go as high as 12000 rpm with 6 speed setting
400-800 rpm maximum, a grinder is too fast.
Why do I feel like when I’m not trying to use to much pressure the pad doesn’t really spin. That’s @ setting 2-3. If I bump it up faster I fear I may burn/ damage paint. Tips?
Only hold the front of the machine with one finger.
Hi, thank you.
Which speed do you usually use on rotary? Thanks
The slowest it will go
Very interesting video guys! My main interest in the rotary is reduced noise as the DA is loud for my neighbours. Is there a big decibel difference between brands or would a decent budget brand still be a lot quieter than a DA? I assume I can run at a lower speed to which will reduce noise as well? Many thanks! Brian.👍
Yes, a comparably priced rotary will
Be quieter than a DA.
@@diydetailofficial many thanks!
Great video! I have a SPTA 12v mini random orbital polisher and am looking to pick up a bigger one like you guys are using in this video. Would you recommend getting the rotary next, or a bigger 15mm or 21mm RO? If I get the rotary, would you recommend also getting a bigger RO, or is the little mini orbital enough for cutting? I’m not a detailer, just a guy that wants to take care of his three (3) cars.
Also which pads should I buy from you guys for cutting, polishing, waxing etc.
The tool is chosen in function of what you want to accomplish. If it’s for light polishing and jeweling then a rotary with our red pad is excellent. If you want to remove defects then a 21mm with our Wool pad is best.
Thank you for the response. I'm buying some of your pads today and need to decide on what size. What size backing plates / pads are used in this video and is this what you suggest in general?@@diydetailofficial
@@itsjustme77 the size of the pad is determined by the tool for a DA. For a rotary I prefer a 6 inch pad and backing plate.
Are pads between the rotary and DA interchangeable ? I know you used the same pads here but is this true across all makes of pads
Not with all pads.
so would the 8mm flex xce cordless finish better than the milwakee 21mm since 8mm is closer to the 0 throw of a rotary.
Correct
Great video, thanks!
Thank you
So would you say I can use the variable speed rotary polisher to do a paint correction on my black vehicle?
Yes, at the lowest speed.
@@diydetailofficial so I just received my Milwauke variable speed polisher but it has a 7 inch backing plate. I can’t seem to find any pads for it? Did you guys change out backing plate? Would like to get some pads to cut and paint correct and polish my black raven soft paint on my car
I have problem with my DA rupes 15mkiii polisher on big panels with a lot of curves on the panel. As soon as the surface is not flat its very hard to find the corect angle going up down, left and right... so i endig up working with the rupes 3" machine wich takes forever to finish a car. Will rotory going to speed up my proces? I just cant understand how people work with the big rupes machines!
Tnank for the viseo
Also Ivan 😊
It takes practice to use both machines. Be careful to not put any pressure on your machine, and avoid using pads with a flat face.
I've been using a Makita 9227C buffer and heavy white wool pads for the past 20yrs or so and love it. still use Maguires 3 step process and vehicles I do come out great but always room for improvement imo. is this Gold Standard Polish a compound as well as a final polish meaning can it be used to cut deep major scratches with a wool pad and then be used as a final polish with a foam pad? also, is there any panel prep or anything that needs to be done after buffing prior to putting on a ceramic protective coating or can you just apply a ceramic coating once you are done whipping the vehicle down after a final polish? would be nice to cut out a step or 2 when I do details for friends and family since I no longer do it for a living although I have been thinking about going on my own again being that I hate working for others. Lol
Yes The Gold Standard Polishing System can do both with different pads. Even though The Gold Standard Polish contains no fillers or waxes, it’s always best practice to use a panel prep.
Hi. What about the forced action like a flex 3401 vrg are they micro marring too or..?
Yes it will give micro marring, but less than a long throw DA.
@@diydetailofficialwill the forced rotation ‘correct’ more than a rotary due to it’s additional throw?
I’m just wondering if i was going to have one machine that can correct/finish/and be time efficient - would the be the forced rotation or the rotary.
Question With a rotary an a wool pad for cutting does it leave swirl makes ? So I been using wool pad an black polishing pad after an it leaves swirls .could it be that polish drys fast ?
A wool pad will leave swirls for sure. That’s why we recommend cutting with our wool pad on a DA, it leaves a better surface. If the black pad you’re using isn’t a waffle, you will have problems finishing swirl free.
@@diydetailofficial appreciate the answer.👍 Will check out your polishing pads
Yvan and Nick. I did a test on piano black B pillar. Used my trusty DAs with various pads/polishes (my goto is Koch Chemie purple with KC purple pad) vs, my Maxshine 5" rotary (which had been used maybe 10 minutes in five years) with your Gold Standard and matching DIY yellow pad at speed 1 (that seems SLOW, lol). Wish I could say piano black lies, but it doesn't. The rotary was substantially better and made it close to perfect. Yvan, are you using a 7" pad on your Milwaukee cordless? I have the Milwaukee DA cordless and thought about getting the Milwaukee rotary. The 5" on the Maxshine is a bit limiting, but it is so easy to get into edges dues to the lack of the DA oscillation.
Love your channel! No BS.
Thanks you, I use 6 inch primarily.
I made the mistake years ago buying the Flex 3403 lightweight rotary. It's slowest speed is 1,100 rpm. Is that too fast? Love the thing, but wish I could dial it down much slower.
Yvan likes 4-800 rpm
Other than a waffle pad, would a lake country ccs pad finish well and not jump around?
Slightly better than flat, but waffle pads are superior
What size backing plate does the 6” yellow waffle pad use Thank you
On a rotary 5.5 to 6 inch
Which DA polisher size is most versatile for DIY detailer Or weekend warriors?
5 inch.
Yvan, that Milwaukee cordless rotary you're using has a low setting of 800 rpm. Is there a benefit to having a rotary that can spin even lower, like 400-600 rpm?
I prefer the Flex corded, at 400rpm
It’s official, you guys make the best products in the industry now (pro or otherwise).
Thank you
Sorry for the lengthy question… I have a E class 22’ black metallic. I’ve run it through the car wash for reasons I don’t like to talk about. It was a bad idea I know. But I have lots of “swirls” (I know there just straight lines technically lol) and I know German cars tend to have a much harder clear coat. I want to ceramic coat and begin to actually wash my car properly from here on out. I’m seeing that the DA is definitely better for cutting and the rotary for polishing. Do I really need both? Ideally I’m sure the answer is yes. But is there anything to be said about getting just a DA or just a rotary? Any suggestions would be very helpful. I’m also wondering about along with a DA/and or Rotary, should I get a smaller 3 inch version for smaller panels? I’m very patient btw and don’t mind taking my time. I’m looking for a quick thing btw.
One or the other can do the job. The rotary takes a little more practice and patience, but the results will be rewarding. Also on the rotary you can use different sized backing plates to use different sized pads.
@@diydetailofficial can I paint correct with your wool and then waffle pads and finish with the Jeweling pad with just the 15mm Milwaukee DA?
Hey Guys! Who makes the backing plate. I think the milwaukee comes with a 7" stock
Looking to try the polish and pads soon.
Lake county manufacturing
I have a Dewalt rotary. It’s a bit heavy, so, I use it only on large/flat surfaces. Works great.
Definitely a workhorse.
What's your take on Zenith technique with rotary? Starting slow, slowly increase the speed and slow down again
No need, stay at the lowest speed.
@@diydetailofficial everyone has their own view of rpm... Some stay at the lower end with very slow arms' movement, others like to stay at 1000/1200 rpm with fast arms' speed. I guess everyone has their own way of working the rotary, still I agree that it gives the best finish... Although the 21mm has more cut it's not so agile in very tight spaces like the rotary with the pad inclined
What rotary is that? I'm looking at getting a Rupes in the future but looking for something less expensive until then. And I don't like the Griots they have out
That’s a Milwaukee cordless, The Flex PE14-2 is universally regarded as the best in the industry, the Maxshine is a good budget friendly alternative.
@@diydetailofficial I appreciate it. Will be looking to get one so I can get back to paint correction.
Can you try just a touch with the rotary at higher speed just to check if paint gets damage or not?
You can and live with the consequences if you try.
Thanks for the tip. Hi from Réunion Island!
Bonjour!
Liked the short video and well explained however, I wish we could seen the finish polish more closely.
We will be making more videos on this subject.
Good to see. The DA polishers seemed to be a trend to me, and all the majority of the content I watch online has these DAs. So I thought man, maybe I'm just a dinosaur and need to pick up a DA. I grew up with the rotary so that's what I've always used. I recently upgraded from my 20 year old corded Dewalt rotary to a cordless one, then started to second guess myself thinking I should have come into the new age with the DA even though I love the Dewalt rotary polishers I've had.
The machine isn’t important, what is important is how you use it.
Does it make sense to finish with something like the rotary and finishing pad. after cutting with something aggressive like your wool pad?
Or is the micromarring left by the wool pad too aggressive for the finishing with a rotary
Great question! The rotary jeweling pad on a rotary does great as a second step after compounding with wool on a DA
What size backing plate and pad do you prefer on the rotary?
6 inches
As a first time doing this to my gr supra i honestly am afraid to use a rotary. I really need a confirmation of if i should buy a rotary and start to polish with that or go with a DA for now and build practice. I do not want to damage my clear coat.
Start with a scrap panel to test.
Great video,,, I had no idea. Yet companies push dual action all day long. Now how do you get finger nail scratches in door handle wells? My used Honda came with them,, just on drivers side.. figures right,, see them every day.
Try a DIY Detail Tree Sap Remover. If not, DIY Detail Gold Standard Polish on a MF Towel.
I'm ngl. My Makita 18v seems to be absolutely perfect for my style now. Slow, smooth and paid attention to everything you've taught. However it just feels perfect and finishes to a mirror. Perhaps it's not the best. But the forced rotary and dual action is butter smooth and the power never lets up.
Excellent
Been using a rotary polisher for years and yes the gloss is insane.
Thank you.
It seems like in the early 2000s when detailing online communities and new products started coming out, that the standard knowledge was that people who didn't know what they were doing/were beginners could more easily ruin their paints with a rotary then they could with a dual action, and that a DA PC was the standard. It wasn't the fault of the tool per se, but it earned a reputation also of being the more professional tool because of the margin for error.
Very unfortunate
I have the Milwaukee rotary, how well will it do with a cutting compound do you think?
Great
What size jewel pad should I buy if I have this Milwaukee Rotary?
5.5 or 6.5 inch. It’s personal preference, and what size backing plate you use.
I need to try this, I seen it from you all the time but never tried it. Do you recommend for an enhancement use the rotary?
Yes.
@@diydetailofficial using a flat pad will not be the same as using the waffle?
Very different
So you guys only have the fine cut waffle pad …. Would that be the same as the Rupes yellow fine cute waffle pad
And have you tried an enhancement yet with coarser heavy cut waffle with finishing polish to increase cut but still leaves good finish without halograms ?
Would you recommend the Milwaukee rotary polisher?
Yes, it’s good.
Hi there , i have a rotary polisher , but if you had to choose between the 15mm Milwaukee cordless da and the 21 mm Milwaukee da , which would be the best choice ?
21mm for cutting/compounding for sure

Dual action to cut, rotary to finish :)
@@diydetailofficial thank you

Make sure not to get the XCE unless you want forced rotation, the XFE is the cordless dual action polisher (I think this is correct lol but double check)
Old man here... I just waxed my wife's car with paste wax (again, old) and I can now relate to the Karate Kids arms after the wax on/ wax off scene. I need to get the right tool to apply and buff the wax so here I am on you tube looking for answers. You had a nice flat surface you were working with but there are lots of curves in cars that the pad you used looks like it would burn through unless you were well practiced. I recall the days of the big fluffy wool pad and even then I always did this by hand... and not very often, but tat big fluffy pad looked safe as long as you went slow.
So... what tooling would you suggest that would help keep me out of the joint clinic and is also safe to use by the occasional user?
A random orbital sander works very well.

So 2 step with da then rotary but if you’re just performing a 2 step what would you both recommend for optimal results
DA to cut, Rotary to finish.
@@diydetailofficial meant to say 1 step sorry
@@diydetailofficial Almost impossible to get a hologram free correction only using the rotary though. Not many pros use it anymore and I think just for that reason alone. I think you have to be highly skilled in the rotary to get it done without holograms.

Very interested now haha i perform 2 step on both random orbital and the results are beautiful but im always a tool geek

The rotary has never died for a reason.
I’m experiencing difficulties with my rotary polisher. It doesn’t “float” like in the video. Unless I hold it in the “takeoff position” it either bounces around or torques away from the polishing path. Any thoughts that you can relay on this will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your using a flat pad.
@@diydetailofficial yes,is the secret a waffle pad then?
You need to center the pad, biggest mistake I see novice rotary polishers make, not having the pad centered. Once you get it centered the tool becomes easy to use.
