I have an old rotary buried somewhere in my garage. I’ve recently been converted from a once every 6 week plus car washer, to a once a week weekend warrior ( I can’t call myself a detailer ) utilising all the latest products. I always fund my hobbies very well, and as such have been thinking of adding a DA to my arsenal. After watching this I don’t think I’ll bother, I’ll dig my polisher out and give it a whirl sometime this month. We’ve owned our car since new 6 years ago, it’s never been through a carwash so the paint is fairly good, no swirls, but I’m looking forward to seeing just how much shine I can get out of her. Thanks for the inspiration guys 👍
Awesome. Thanks guys. Only thing that might have made this better would have been readings from a gloss meter. Doesn't matter to me, I'm a "finish with the rotary" convert. Love the results and I finish the day without my hands buzzing from the 21mm.
Very recent rotary convert here after seeing Yvan's rotary video elsewhere. I'm have been an enthusiast detailer for 13 yrs with MULTIPLE DA polishers in my arsenal. This week experimented with rotary, waffle pads, 600rpm, and system 4000 pad washer. All I can say is WOW!! I'm a convert and this is a mind blower and total shift in polishing mindset for me. Thanks Yvan!
@tedrarrick165 personally, I've been cutting and finishing with a rotary all my life (basically 30yrs detailing professionally and on the side) and imo you get much better results. in the end, the paint seems to look a lot deeper and glossier when using a rotary. sure I do things differently though since I clay bar the whole vehicle as I wash it. after I use Meguires heavy compound with a white wool pad, then switch out to Meguires Glaze with a different white wool pad then use a hand glaze. once I do all that I do a ceramic coating and paint (especially black) looks really deep and glossy. even with all the new tech out I'm still doing things old school but in my defense detailing is basically a hobby for past 10yrs so haven't kept up on all the new products but definitely want to try out this DIY Gold Standard Polish. Imo though, nothing will ever beat using a rotary for buffing.
@@richardsalinetrojr1957 Sounds like you are a pro with the rotary! So far, have just used a polish pad and a finishing pad with a polish and an AIO with great results. Don't have the pad or experience yet to cut with it. Been using the pad washer between each pass. really like the simplicity and smoothness of rotary at 600 rpm
Well vibration is a big concern for me with a neck issue and Yvan suggested rotary. I’m a total beginner so I thought I wasn’t good enough to try, but after watching more of ur videos maybe I can do it as a first machine polisher. Thanks for all the content!
I've been using rotary for 10 years. Everytime I get done it looks fantastic. Then after a couple days it gathers some dust and sun comes out and it looks EXTREMELY bad. I've watched a few of your videos now so maybe I got knowledge of why. I never cleaned my pads, went until the polish was dry thinking that is when the magic happens, didn't know the pad does the cutting and did the lift off technique because if I didn't the rotary would be jumping up and down. I get a forced rotation makita polisher today so I'm excited to see what I can do from learning from you and Pan.
Great video. Perfectly answers the questions I have/had for awhile now. I love detailing my car but to be honest I have been unable to do a complete detail. As I was afraid of cutting the paint as the ol' tales tell. But this puts my mind at ease. You all are amazing and have a new follower.
Came from 7484 to 12,15,21mm throw then settled in forced rotation and rotary. I can say aside from producing great results i have less prep, im not as tired and cut my time compounding and polishing. You just got to give urself time and the right technique on using rotary. And as Ivan have pointed out which not mentioned with other videos is the noise that the DA produces is far more greater than the rotary.
I'm getting hooked on the rotary! I'm using an old one my grandpa has kept up with and it really does give more gloss. I also really really really like the gold standard system! Thank you Nick and Yvan!
Good to see. The DA polishers seemed to be a trend to me, and all the majority of the content I watch online has these DAs. So I thought man, maybe I'm just a dinosaur and need to pick up a DA. I grew up with the rotary so that's what I've always used. I recently upgraded from my 20 year old corded Dewalt rotary to a cordless one, then started to second guess myself thinking I should have come into the new age with the DA even though I love the Dewalt rotary polishers I've had.
Fact: Rotary polishers do create a visually higher level of gloss but mostly when used with all types of wool pads + compounds. Once the above is done, subsequent steps with Rotary would heighten the gloss even further. Its drawbacks: The lack of physical coaching thats available to newcomers who are humble and willing to admit they know nuts about machine polishing. Tendency to badly marr the surface (during compounding) thus requiring a very high degree of experience to accurately GUESS what pad and product combo to be used as Step 2 to fully remove Step 1’s marring. A much easier method but much slower and produces less than optimal gloss is to buy a DA from Walmart which requires absolutely no physical coaching. But then, you’d still be spending loads of money to buy lots of different pads, compounds, polishes to find out which combo suits you. Again, different clearcoats respond very differently. And thats where the BIG MONEY lies…making the user experiment endlessly.
Yes, correct and Thank you ;) You can use the uno Pure, Sonax super finish or next few super hyper the softest polish with softest pads of course and without Any pressure with DÁ, but ALWAYS do a very light swirls. :) few people see it ;) With rotary absolutely clear!
Always used a DA but this really makes me want to try out a rotary and see. Looking at the 2 it seems like the rotary is just a much smoother and peaceful experience
old school here , rupes rotary corded , never had an issue , on a fresh paint , de nib 2000, farecla g3 liquid compound only , even old paint , very rarely did I polish , like you've stated it's the operator
I'm ngl. My Makita 18v seems to be absolutely perfect for my style now. Slow, smooth and paid attention to everything you've taught. However it just feels perfect and finishes to a mirror. Perhaps it's not the best. But the forced rotary and dual action is butter smooth and the power never lets up.
I only wish you had larger 7 inch pads to try on my rotary. Been using the Gold Standard polish since it came out with my Rupes Pads (Rupes has more sizes) and it is a great combo for most of the polishing I do.
So I was looking to buy one or the other for my black 2009 Ctsv and noticed you were working on the same car!! Took your advice and I’m going with the rotary. Thanks guys
It seems like in the early 2000s when detailing online communities and new products started coming out, that the standard knowledge was that people who didn't know what they were doing/were beginners could more easily ruin their paints with a rotary then they could with a dual action, and that a DA PC was the standard. It wasn't the fault of the tool per se, but it earned a reputation also of being the more professional tool because of the margin for error.
I learnt how to cut and polish at a detail shop 14 years ago, we used rotary's. Burnt through paint a couple times and learnt my lesson, rotary just feels much better. DA feels so strange
so kind of the thing i picked up from this video is maybe use a DA polisher with compounds and maybe rotaries with polish and waxes which will do better with the gloss and eliminate higher changes of micro marring? edit: watched the last 3 minutes and you confirmed the cutting with DA and polish with the rotary lol thanks
Will I get a decent cut on the rotary with your microfiber pad? And if so what speed should I use for cutting? I see you say speed 1 for polish/Jeweling but what for cutting more efficiently? I want to invest in a decent polisher but only get one and am leaning to rotary for doing boats. I want to get diy cordless models once they come out but want something to use in the meantime. (i detail as a side business.)
The reduced vibration alone makes me want to try rotary again. When I learned rotary, we'd only use wool pads and it was tough to finish down, but if we switched to a finishing foam it would love to toss the machine around especially if the pad wasn't perfectly centered unless you held it on an angle. Sounds like I just learned poor practices with a rotary.
As a first time doing this to my gr supra i honestly am afraid to use a rotary. I really need a confirmation of if i should buy a rotary and start to polish with that or go with a DA for now and build practice. I do not want to damage my clear coat.
Us older guys know the truth of the rotary. It's the best finishing machine and is not scary. Just trained a guy yesterday for eight hours to use the rotary properly. Even the gear driven finishes great. But a 6 or 8-12 mm orbit DA is the best to finish with if your only wanting to use DA's
@@diydetailofficial Almost impossible to get a hologram free correction only using the rotary though. Not many pros use it anymore and I think just for that reason alone. I think you have to be highly skilled in the rotary to get it done without holograms.
Why do I feel like when I’m not trying to use to much pressure the pad doesn’t really spin. That’s @ setting 2-3. If I bump it up faster I fear I may burn/ damage paint. Tips?
Hi Yvan i've heard detailers say that 'rotary polishers cant do 1 step corrections compared to a D.A , particularly on moderate-heavy defect paint' Do you think there is any truth to this statement and if not would you perhaps make a video/short to demonstrate that the rotary is capable of doing 1 steps even with a good amount of correction.
I wonder if the rotary is more dangerous on angles and beveled surfaces. When I was new to mechanical polishers, I burned through my paint, not realizing even DA's can overdo it on raised edges.
That doesn’t look like the backing plate that comes with the Milwaukee rotary tool. Can you tell me if it’s just the model or is it an alternative that appears to to give the tool more battery clearance so you keep the pad flat on the surface?
How much pressure are you applying down on the paint as you polish? I think I remember in another one of your videos its not much at all. Also can you do a vid of polishing a boat gel coat?
Hi, I tried finishing with a mini rotary and 3 inch backing plate for the first time. Have to say, was a bit grabby and was taking me all over the place so I stopped. I know it would be hard to say, what could I have been doing wrong??
Great video,,, I had no idea. Yet companies push dual action all day long. Now how do you get finger nail scratches in door handle wells? My used Honda came with them,, just on drivers side.. figures right,, see them every day.
Very interesting video guys! My main interest in the rotary is reduced noise as the DA is loud for my neighbours. Is there a big decibel difference between brands or would a decent budget brand still be a lot quieter than a DA? I assume I can run at a lower speed to which will reduce noise as well? Many thanks! Brian.👍
Rotary absolutely gives swirls - cut with the rotary and then finish with the D/A to eliminate the swirls from the rotary. I do black all of the time, a circular motion causes circular finish in the sun / sunlight, period
Can you guys go over what to do with trim pieces on a car? The flat black parts of various cars. My 2022 WRX for example, those fenders yikes. Do i have to tape them off?
I made the mistake years ago buying the Flex 3403 lightweight rotary. It's slowest speed is 1,100 rpm. Is that too fast? Love the thing, but wish I could dial it down much slower.
for the rotary how many rpm is good to use with?... whats the range?... i have a grinder which claim to be able to go as high as 12000 rpm with 6 speed setting
I have problem with my DA rupes 15mkiii polisher on big panels with a lot of curves on the panel. As soon as the surface is not flat its very hard to find the corect angle going up down, left and right... so i endig up working with the rupes 3" machine wich takes forever to finish a car. Will rotory going to speed up my proces? I just cant understand how people work with the big rupes machines! Tnank for the viseo Also Ivan 😊
Is the one Yvan used the milwaukee 7in polisher? On their product it doesn’t mention anything about rotary but I assume it the one because their other three do mention the DA.
I have a question I bought your Red Jeweling pad the 5' (it's actually 5,5 inch) why is it 5,5 and not 5'? It doesn't fit perfectly on my 125mm backing plate for the rotary, it sticks out that 0,5 inch. Can't find a 130mm backing plates anywhere here, ppl just don't use that size here in EU :/
@@diydetailofficial Thank you very much, it must be a really hard thing to anwser all our quesitons, especially that a lot of them just repeat, but your team is just so good and patient witch us :) A sign of a true educative chanel! Again thank you very much
Ivan would you recommend the rupes rotary or the flex rotary? The rupes has slightly lower rpm’s (450) in comparison to flex (600) and I know you mention the lower the better.
New to this so any help is much appreciated. The Milwaukee rotary Ivan is using is spec'd as a 7" polisher, however, the DIY yellow and red pads are 6.25 or 5.25. Do you have to change the backing plate of the rotary to fit DIY pads? Thank you!
@@diydetailofficial everyone has their own view of rpm... Some stay at the lower end with very slow arms' movement, others like to stay at 1000/1200 rpm with fast arms' speed. I guess everyone has their own way of working the rotary, still I agree that it gives the best finish... Although the 21mm has more cut it's not so agile in very tight spaces like the rotary with the pad inclined
Dang, everytime I try a rotary it's so grabby and wants to fly out of my hands. Have to add more polish or tilt the pad to regain control. I know it's got to be me but I don't know what to do. Suggestions?
You need to center the pad, biggest mistake I see novice rotary polishers make, not having the pad centered. Once you get it centered the tool becomes easy to use.
Yvan and Nick. I did a test on piano black B pillar. Used my trusty DAs with various pads/polishes (my goto is Koch Chemie purple with KC purple pad) vs, my Maxshine 5" rotary (which had been used maybe 10 minutes in five years) with your Gold Standard and matching DIY yellow pad at speed 1 (that seems SLOW, lol). Wish I could say piano black lies, but it doesn't. The rotary was substantially better and made it close to perfect. Yvan, are you using a 7" pad on your Milwaukee cordless? I have the Milwaukee DA cordless and thought about getting the Milwaukee rotary. The 5" on the Maxshine is a bit limiting, but it is so easy to get into edges dues to the lack of the DA oscillation. Love your channel! No BS.
What rotary is that? I'm looking at getting a Rupes in the future but looking for something less expensive until then. And I don't like the Griots they have out
A questions Ivan, if using a rotary polisher to both cut and finish, what pads are preferable for each step, Foam or Lambs Wool , and why ? I see you used Foam for your finish, could you have also used Lambs Wool?
For intermediate diy detailing... Any recommendations on a cordless rotary and a da?? Want to buy both.. Not chinese product...😅😅😅 Appreciate your input. Great videos...learning and learning from you guys.. Btw also polishing pads as any recommendations. Much success and. .. Much blessings 🙌 😎😎
Old man here... I just waxed my wife's car with paste wax (again, old) and I can now relate to the Karate Kids arms after the wax on/ wax off scene. I need to get the right tool to apply and buff the wax so here I am on you tube looking for answers. You had a nice flat surface you were working with but there are lots of curves in cars that the pad you used looks like it would burn through unless you were well practiced. I recall the days of the big fluffy wool pad and even then I always did this by hand... and not very often, but tat big fluffy pad looked safe as long as you went slow. So... what tooling would you suggest that would help keep me out of the joint clinic and is also safe to use by the occasional user?
@@diydetailofficial so I just received my Milwauke variable speed polisher but it has a 7 inch backing plate. I can’t seem to find any pads for it? Did you guys change out backing plate? Would like to get some pads to cut and paint correct and polish my black raven soft paint on my car
specifically curious about the milwaukee rotary, does battery position being vertical and not horizontal like the da cause any issues? And does the rpm give you enough? I know it's a little lower than a corded.
I wasn’t able to get the polish to come out of the sprayer for the longest time, are there any tricks I could use to get it to go through the tube quicker?
I always thought that a rotary was best for cutting (way more powerful) and a DA was better for final stages in polishing…. This is the exact opposite. Why is a DA better at cutting? I thought the whole point of dual action was to eliminate the swirls and scratches that a rotary puts in…
A Dual Action cuts much faster with the right pad because it’s actually doing more work on the paint. If a rotary polisher leaves damage on the paint it’s the fault of the user, not the tool

Thank you
So 2 step with da then rotary but if you’re just performing a 2 step what would you both recommend for optimal results
DA to cut, Rotary to finish.
@@diydetailofficial meant to say 1 step sorry
@@diydetailofficial Almost impossible to get a hologram free correction only using the rotary though. Not many pros use it anymore and I think just for that reason alone. I think you have to be highly skilled in the rotary to get it done without holograms.
Yvan trained a 12 year old to finish with a rotary today.
Why do I feel like when I’m not trying to use to much pressure the pad doesn’t really spin. That’s @ setting 2-3. If I bump it up faster I fear I may burn/ damage paint. Tips?
Only hold the front of the machine with one finger.
The 21mm stroke random orbital is the best choice for that. Yes I’ve done it with a rotary, but the 21mm machine cuts faster.
I wonder if the rotary is more dangerous on angles and beveled surfaces. When I was new to mechanical polishers, I burned through my paint, not realizing even DA's can overdo it on raised edges.
It’s very pad and technique dependent
It is MIND BLOWING how everyone’s opinions are so different as far as what is best for what. 😅
Correct, and everyone is right.
Liked the short video and well explained however, I wish we could seen the finish polish more closely.
We will be making more videos on this subject.
Appreciate the real-time technique
Thanks
That doesn’t look like the backing plate that comes with the Milwaukee rotary tool. Can you tell me if it’s just the model or is it an alternative that appears to to give the tool more battery clearance so you keep the pad flat on the surface?
we love that yellow backing plate, it's from Lake Country Manufacturing, a 6-inch rotary backing plate
How much pressure are you applying down on the paint as you polish? I think I remember in another one of your videos its not much at all. Also can you do a vid of polishing a boat gel coat?
No pressure at all. It’s on our to do list
Hi, I tried finishing with a mini rotary and 3 inch backing plate for the first time. Have to say, was a bit grabby and was taking me all over the place so I stopped. I know it would be hard to say, what could I have been doing wrong??
A few possibilities, dry pad, flat pad, too much pressure, too high speed, too much product on the pad.
@@diydetailofficialThank you! Will keep these things in mind.
Thanks... having the same question!
Hopefully this answered it for you
Great video,,, I had no idea. Yet companies push dual action all day long. Now how do you get finger nail scratches in door handle wells? My used Honda came with them,, just on drivers side.. figures right,, see them every day.
Try a DIY Detail Tree Sap Remover. If not, DIY Detail Gold Standard Polish on a MF Towel.
I really wish Milwaukee would update their rotaries orientation of the battery like the newer DA 15/21 have
Agreed
What backing plate are you using for the rotary. I can't find any plate other than an official replacement part from Milwaukee.
This is from Lake Country Manufacturing.
The Rotary is the way guys! Less vibration should be a selling point on its own!
Agreed
Please make a video explain the technique differences in more detail between the rotary and da.
Good idea
Very interesting video guys! My main interest in the rotary is reduced noise as the DA is loud for my neighbours. Is there a big decibel difference between brands or would a decent budget brand still be a lot quieter than a DA? I assume I can run at a lower speed to which will reduce noise as well? Many thanks! Brian.👍
Yes, a comparably priced rotary will
Be quieter than a DA.
@@diydetailofficial many thanks!
Rotary absolutely gives swirls - cut with the rotary and then finish with the D/A to eliminate the swirls from the rotary. I do black all of the time, a circular motion causes circular finish in the sun / sunlight, period
I invite you to try our pads and polish, you may find you too can finish with a rotary.
Can you guys go over what to do with trim pieces on a car? The flat black parts of various cars. My 2022 WRX for example, those fenders yikes. Do i have to tape them off?
No need to tape off trim, in fact, with our yellow gold waffle pad, we like to polish the trim using the Gold Standard polish 👍
so would the 8mm flex xce cordless finish better than the milwakee 21mm since 8mm is closer to the 0 throw of a rotary.
Correct
I made the mistake years ago buying the Flex 3403 lightweight rotary. It's slowest speed is 1,100 rpm. Is that too fast? Love the thing, but wish I could dial it down much slower.
Yvan likes 4-800 rpm
for the rotary how many rpm is good to use with?... whats the range?... i have a grinder which claim to be able to go as high as 12000 rpm with 6 speed setting
400-800 rpm maximum, a grinder is too fast.
Tnank for the viseo
Also Ivan 😊
It takes practice to use both machines. Be careful to not put any pressure on your machine, and avoid using pads with a flat face.
Would you recommend a rotary to a first timer?
absolutely
So would I be correct to say that dry flatting and compounding is good with the da but final polish with rotary?
Correct
What size jewel pad should I buy if I have this Milwaukee Rotary?
5.5 or 6.5 inch. It’s personal preference, and what size backing plate you use.
Is the one Yvan used the milwaukee 7in polisher? On their product it doesn’t mention anything about rotary but I assume it the one because their other three do mention the DA.
Yes, it is the Milwaukee rotary.
It’s normal to have a slight overhang
@@diydetailofficial Thank you very much, it must be a really hard thing to anwser all our quesitons, especially that a lot of them just repeat, but your team is just so good and patient witch us :) A sign of a true educative chanel! Again thank you very much
Ivan would you recommend the rupes rotary or the flex rotary? The rupes has slightly lower rpm’s (450) in comparison to flex (600) and I know you mention the lower the better.
The flex for its superior ergonomics.
Does that mean gear driven DA will finish like a rotary since the orbit and rotation is fixed ?
No , a Rotary is in a league of its own.
New to this so any help is much appreciated. The Milwaukee rotary Ivan is using is spec'd as a 7" polisher, however, the DIY yellow and red pads are 6.25 or 5.25. Do you have to change the backing plate of the rotary to fit DIY pads? Thank you!
Yes you can buy backing plates in various sizes.
Very interested now haha i perform 2 step on both random orbital and the results are beautiful but im always a tool geek
With a random you will get great results as well, only side by side can an experienced eye see the difference.
What's your take on Zenith technique with rotary? Starting slow, slowly increase the speed and slow down again
No need, stay at the lowest speed.
What is a good rotary? But for machine for beginners at a good price. And cordless.
Cordless? We like the Milwaukee. Does it have to be cordless? Otherwise there are some nice options for less money
You mentioned that you use a DA to cut and a Rotary to finish. If I don’t want to invest in two types of polishers, which one do you recommend?
Your choice, they both work
Dang, everytime I try a rotary it's so grabby and wants to fly out of my hands. Have to add more polish or tilt the pad to regain control. I know it's got to be me but I don't know what to do. Suggestions?
Sounds like your using a flat pad.
@@diydetailofficial yes,is the secret a waffle pad then?
No BS.
Thanks you, I use 6 inch primarily.
Thanks for the tip. Hi from Réunion Island!
Bonjour!
What rotary is that? I'm looking at getting a Rupes in the future but looking for something less expensive until then. And I don't like the Griots they have out
That’s a Milwaukee cordless, The Flex PE14-2 is universally regarded as the best in the industry, the Maxshine is a good budget friendly alternative.
@@diydetailofficial I appreciate it. Will be looking to get one so I can get back to paint correction.
How do use a rotary on curves and surfaces that are not flat?
Take a look at this video

At what speed should I use my milwaukee rotary
Speed 1
@@diydetailofficial that's only 800 rpm
Is there a difference between Lake Country yellow and black backing plates?
New manufacturer
A questions Ivan, if using a rotary polisher to both cut and finish, what pads are preferable for each step, Foam or Lambs Wool , and why ? I see you used Foam for your finish, could you have also used Lambs Wool?
Wool to cut, foam to finish
@@diydetailofficial Thank you for your reply
Thank you guys, going rotary

For intermediate diy detailing...
Any recommendations on a cordless rotary and a da??
Want to buy both..
Not chinese product...😅😅😅
Appreciate your input.
Great videos...learning and learning from you guys..
Btw also polishing pads as any recommendations.
Much success and. ..

Cordless rotary and dual action that may know of?

Have a nice weekend.
A random orbital sander works very well.

So is a rotary still the better option on a 1 step with little clear coat?
Yes, it cuts less than a DA and provides more gloss.
@@diydetailofficial imma try it which rotary is recommended?
Your choice 4-600 rpm is ideal
So would you say I can use the variable speed rotary polisher to do a paint correction on my black vehicle?
Yes, at the lowest speed.
Its fine, but you need to get used to it
Very interesting and good teaching video but I would have liked u to do it on a matte car qnd then show the results.
You should never polish matte paint.
Y’all are good stuff, adding to my cart!
Please do! And we have a sale this weekend as well:)
I wasn’t able to get the polish to come out of the sprayer for the longest time, are there any tricks I could use to get it to go through the tube quicker?
Never in the HISTORY of EVER have i seen a couple sprits of polish polish such a large surface area.
That’s the goal
I always thought that a rotary was best for cutting (way more powerful) and a DA was better for final stages in polishing…. This is the exact opposite. Why is a DA better at cutting? I thought the whole point of dual action was to eliminate the swirls and scratches that a rotary puts in…
A Dual Action cuts much faster with the right pad because it’s actually doing more work on the paint. If a rotary polisher leaves damage on the paint it’s the fault of the user, not the tool
How long does your ceramic spray polish last for on a un garaged daily driver on average guy's please?
3-6 months
