Pretty lucky to have a Mesa as a 'first amp', most of us were slumming it with a crappy 15w solid state to figure out if we were going to actually stick with guitar first :P
My first amp was an old Peavey I found in my attic. Lucky to have that thing for many years before I sold it. Now rocking a Fender Champion. Really want a Mesa Boogie, but they are soooo expensive
Love me some Mesa... for me my sentimental gear is my 96 strat my mom got me before she passed. That thing has followed me to Texas, Alaska, Georgia, NY, Colorado, Japan, Guam, ireland, England, Germany, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait and Iraq... she's a well traveled old bird.
My dad bought a Mesa dc-5 combo when I was probably 6 years old (1998ish). I inherited it later on and still play it today. There’s nothing better than a mesa.
So, a little story. It's 3 pm here today, and I just had my first sip of coffee of the day. It's great to have Ray around the metaphorical campfire and soothe us all with his tritone bends and harmoic squeals. Thanks.
I have to tell you man I have the same amp the DC-3.it is my first tubed combo. My dad got it out of one of his who didn’t pay him for studio time in the late 2000s. So here I come along started to play guitar when I was 14 and seeing this amp in my dads studio stuffed in the corner and has not been played in like 2 years I got it out and had the same feeling when playing through it with his les Paul studio DC from 97. It was loud and a killer. I don’t play a lot of metal but you can find great clean tones from that amp on the rhythm Channel
Thanks for this, man! I found on my searching about this amp, that i have in mind to keep to have some fun on my plays. I already saw your video of Gojira plugin, i use the Neural Nolly on study and pratice and know i guess i found the sick tube amp to have some fun, the DC3, thank you and congrats for your videos!
Awesome demo.....glad to know I m not the only one who slightly boosts the 700 hz on the eq when playing marks or c+ii......I still don’t understand why petrucci does that v shape eq
Hey what’s up man! Honestly i kinda prefer it more than the mark v. At least for metal. The mark v can get kinda saggy and mushy at times, whereas the DC is a bit drier if that makes any sense haha
I got this for my first Mesa a few months ago, I was down to an old modded Peavey 1x12 tube combo that honestly sounded a little better than this to my ears at the time or this, and something told me to get the Mesa. After I got home and ABed it with my Valveking, I realized the other combo sounded just like my Valveking and that's why I liked it better initially, good thing I listened to my gut. You got a great tone here, I can't get anything that heavy out of mine without help, but she does a damn good chainsaw with my Left Hand Wrath. Plus I can use it as a cabinet for my Valveking and get that v30 goodness.
The trick to mesa is don’t forget the preamp tone controls are before the guitar input in the circuitry .ie if you turn down bass mid and triple there will be no input so adj8st accordingly
@@fakenewssucks211 Yeah, the EQ knobs sculpt the gain and the 5 band works like a normal EQ. I found the biggest trick with them is speaker selection. I have wicked V30 fatigue these days so that was a big part of why I couldn't enjoy it before. K100s or C90s compliment this amp much better imo
Dude kinda the same thing happening here. First real amp I bought was a dc3 head when they first came out. Sold it decades ago and I got one inbound :). I’ve been through a mkiv, stiletto, and many others. Nothing comes close to the dc3.
How cool that you are back with the amp that your dad came home with, what a cool dad. And what a great sound it has. It reminds me of the first slipknot album. I am looking for a new amp but can't really decide. Thinking about a kemper but I love real amps to much. I am a massive ENGL amp fan and am about to buy the savage mark 2 but still a little in doubt.
I bought one of these used in '98 for about $450. I still have it. Be sure to try it with other speakers... Well, mine came with the Black Shadow (Eminence?) speaker, and I like the amp better with other speakers. I guess you said you have a Vintage 30 in it. I think I tried that one for a while... and I'm pretty sure the amp is a little too powerful for the Alnico Blue (which is a great speaker, but only about 15W).
I bought one of these back in 1996. Had it for a couple gigs, then someone stole it right off the stage. Lost the amp and 3 days worth of gigs. Fuck around. Would love to play through it now.
Hey bro, keep up the awesome work, I'm hoping you can help me out here, would you kindly post amp settings or email pics of settings for a fellow DC3 owner to help get a good baseline? I want to tone match mine in my axe fx 3. These eqs are insanely touchy. I would like to at least get it 80 percent. Great tone though bro, I dont get to use it often....mainly someone wants to use it to record in the studio and most of the time they use it for the clean tone through a 2x12. The clean is so sweet on this amp. Clean and bluesy tones are easy, it's that true mesa heavy sound I always struggled with on this amp.
That was my gigging amp inherited from my other guitarist when he got a MarkV all i ever needer for play indoor or outdoors clubs arenas, whatever. I use it mostly for blues also some Jimi or Texas or Satchstuff too..the clean is way better than the fenders they are based on - Rock on, rick ps man yo=u play good , lucky for us..
I've sort of got my eyes on one of the two, this Dc3 is damn impressive though. Eventually I'll find one for a decent price, I saw that somebody got a 22c+ for $440 at an estate sale on another vid. Obviously they didn't know what they had.
Question: does it does the vintage mark lead sound ? something like a mark III or a II. Dont think it will do a IIC+ but the studio 22 could get close to a mark so ... I am thinking like this sound (with a little help from a TS too) ua-cam.com/video/vh5DDeJL4M4/v-deo.html
You were lucky to have that amp ad first...mine was a stupid Soundking BASS amp...yeah, my stupid dad bought the cheapest starter pack available...a chinese strat with that stupid amp...but i was happy enough and was my first guitar btw...then my aunt’s husband bought me a Jackson JS22 and a Marshall MG15CF that sounded way better with the Digitech XP pedal that mom bought me...
Pretty lucky to have a Mesa as a 'first amp', most of us were slumming it with a crappy 15w solid state to figure out if we were going to actually stick with guitar first :P
Haha don’t worry my first amp of mine was a crappy Marshall combo
He said "played" not owned lol the boogie was his pops
Correct 🤘🙌

@@dk2853 not all boogies are expensive, epecially if you get one ued. I got my dual Rec for 750 bucks.

thats so cool you had her the entire time you were around the world! Very cool stuff buddy

Great amp, Jim Root used one of these in the self titled era right (sic)
He used a dc10. In the Iowa era, but he could have used it for the few tracks he played on the first album.
So, a little story. It's 3 pm here today, and I just had my first sip of coffee of the day. It's great to have Ray around the metaphorical campfire and soothe us all with his tritone bends and harmoic squeals. Thanks.
fuckin A that was a great story
@@xanderraymondcharles Sorda na.. Twas nothing. Keep it up!
I had the DC3 head around 2003 lol....i ran it through a 4x12 cab with V30s and hit was a huge crushing sound....i wish i still had it.
Emg's through a boogie is in the top tier of metal tones!
I agree 1000 percent
This is maybe (for me) the best guitar distorted sound I heard in a long while!!!!
Dude thanks you so much
I used a Bronze series Warlock and a Roland Microcube. It was a good starter setup.
I had a dean mlx into a microcube. I quickly bought a 20 xl cube because I liked that thing so much.
That amp sounded great! 🤘🦇
thanks boss!

Nice sound I have the opportunity to buy one. Sounds amazing
I can't believe that is just the amp and a tube screamer! That little sucker has a sic tone!
Right?! It’s criminally underrated. Nobody ever talks about this amp! I love ot
Dude you have the old lady sounding great!!
thanks Jeff! Yeah man the old gal sounds great!
Awesome playing as always. I need to step up my game
Thanks Joel!
@@xanderraymondcharles You heard it here first!
Awesome demo.....glad to know I m not the only one who slightly boosts the 700 hz on the eq when playing marks or c+ii......I still don’t understand why petrucci does that v shape eq
Thanks man! Yeah idk I tried the v and it just sounds like the stereotypical metal sound of no mids. Very strange
Because that’s the way he prefers it,there’s nothing that needs to be understood about it
How does it compare to the other mark series amp you've got back there?
Hey what’s up man! Honestly i kinda prefer it more than the mark v. At least for metal. The mark v can get kinda saggy and mushy at times, whereas the DC is a bit drier if that makes any sense haha
How do you do those pinch harmonics? The sound sick
That amp is a beast in a 4x12 cabinet.
Damn fine amp, tones for days.
Absolutely! A lot of attack and crunchy goodnesss

So much more Organic sounding, super dynamic

But would like to hear that amp raw. Nothing in front. Just the pure Mesa.
Thing sounds great for an older amp

Doesnt it get hot to the touch when played for 20mins? How much did you get it?
I have a DC-3 Combo and yeah, the DC line runs hot. The F-series that came out after the DC line was discontinued seems to run a bit cooler.
Coool tune bruh

Gibson’s less Paul and a Mesa 😕... try a Rouge with a Rouge Amp 🙃
I had a DC-3 back in 2006. I could get Weezer tones but nothing like this. Of course I was like 19 back then haha
