Thanks! I bought a used DC5 in 1999 and never really knew how to use it. I even bought a small Marshall because I was unable to get the sound I wanted from the Boogie. I learned more about my DC5 during your video than I did in 20 years of playing it. I wish there was a video of how to use all of the knobs in the back of the amp. Obviously, I am not a techie. I thought about selling my DC5, but after seeing your video I will keep it forever - and start playing it more!

You set a precedent in guitar videos. Very very good. I really love all of your videos. Finally someone who takes the time to explain each and every amp and guitar effects. Please keep the videos coming. I really have learned a lot from you and your videos.
Brilliant vid. Owned a DC-5 since 97 and never really understood it until now. Knowing what you have shared has changed the way I use it completely but also made it so much more versatile and even made the old Ibanez s540 I was using today sing like a glassy strat. Thanks heaps!
I just picked up this amp knowing that it was a gem, but also realizing it would take me some time to figure out. This video was amazing at showcasing the different tones you can achieve in this one amp!
Amazing information. I never noticed how much the gain is affected by the treble, mid, bass knobs. Also I love the part where you go from communication breakdown to wind cries mary by turning down volume on the guitar.

Thanks to minutes 20:00 to 21:00 I bought this amp, which is kind of easy to find really cheap (bought mine for 700 eur). I have not had the opportunity to play a lot with it, but I´m sure I´m gonna love it. Thanks for these amazing videos.
This is awesome, thanks! You gave me lots of ideas for the clean channel eq settings. I lol'd a little when you described the gain channel as strange. Your playing is excellent and your tone is on point. Aloha!
So...i own the amp for quite some time now. Actually i used to have all the versions (DC-10, DC-2 etc) - The 2 "must to do" mods are the conversion of the loop from parallel to serial (to handle the stompboxes well) and the volume mod which allows the taper to be very smooth and not form "0 to 11" thing. Check the Boogie forum, they are really easy to do and cheap. - The clean channel is derived from mark IV (blackface) so it has pre-EQ. The lead one is from rectifier so the EQ it's post. On rectifiers you have to dial the bass really low around 2-3 and generally it's a mirror to the gain setting (for example 7 for 3 or 8 for 2) -The lead channel is outstanding. With the graphic EQ i can dial anything i want, from Led Zep to Metallica to Holdsworth. -Gain and Treble are the catalysts for the lead channel and it can be very mushy depends from the dial especially from bass and middle which has to be set very carefully. It's one of the greatest amps out there, very underrated and a hidden gem. (Lonestar brought me here, which is on my "definitely must buy soon in the future" list...) Great, keep it up!
Hi again Budda, I just thought that I would mention something about Mesa Boogie. I bought a Mesa Tremoverb 100 watt back in 1994. Never really liked the amp until I sent it to New York to Voodoo amps for a mod to get rid of the buzzy sounding lead channel. Since that time I have loved the amp. The only drawback was that I paid $1000.00 including shipping to get this amp nodded. I actually surprised at how good this amp sounds on UA-cam. I also have a Vox AC30 Brian May Special Edition amp. The one with just a volume knob. I completely rebuilt this amp to Dave Peterssen's schematic. Sounds not bad, but really it's a one trick pony with just one sound. I used to work for a lady from Portugal here in Canada. Her and her husband ran a restaurant here.I am the same way about amps and guitars. I recently bought a Ceriatone HRM Dumble style amp from this guy who makes point to point wired amps from Malaysia. For the unbelievable price, these amps are incredible. Amps from the United States are very expensive. Do you work only as a musician? You sure have a lot of equipment.
Hi there: Thanks for sharing. I'm mainly a musician, but I also teach guitar via Skype, and have a recording studio. The first reason why I started buying amps was for the studio and for my personal use. It's great to have possibilities when you're recording. I'm a musician for over 26 years now and i've been collecting this gear since the beginning. And i have never sold anything. So I have a lot of gear, but it all gets used. watch the episode about why I have so many amps. ua-cam.com/video/EyvAaiKCLDE/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video. I've played a DC-5 since I bought it in 1991. I've always wondered if there was something wrong with my reverb. Glad to hear from another player that the reverb is subtle. You can dime the reverb on mine and it doesn't sound overboard.
I have owned a few Mesa'a. the problem I always had was the compression. No matter how I set it up there always seemed to be this compression happening that I did not care for. I, like you, bought a fender1968 silverface bassman. That worked for me. Not as complex or versatile but easy to get the sound I was looking for. I added a 1965 Blackface Band Master for the jangle clean and I am pretty happy with that. BUT I MUST SAY.... my weekly jam buddy has a couple of Boogies and when I listen back to the live recordings of our very loose weekly jams I am always impressed with his tone. It just didnt work for me....probably operator error
I have a DC10 2x12 in perfect condition. Most people don't understand how to use these amps. It's 100/60 watt switchable. It kicks ass. It's the Michaelangelo of amps, you can sculpt anything. One thing though I wish is that the push-pull was less sensitive. Yours doesn't seem to react the way mine does. Mine seems to make the volume 10x louder when you pull it. So if I'm using it in a jam I have to set it that way...it's not good for performance. I wish it was footswitchable too. Channel 2, like you said, is a different beast. This channel shines when the power amp is cranked up. Totally different character. Super sensitive, super smooth for solos. Super punchy for rhythm. This channel would shine even more with a proper attenuator. Because even with the 60watt engaged it's too loud to really push it to get the proper feel. I've never played live with the master over 4, and that was outdoors.
I have the same amp but I can't find a proper crunch sound for blues on the first channel playing at low volume at home, when I take the strat it's even worse...maybe I need to buy an attenuator, this thing is really loud :D the second channel is amazing for metal, I love it and it works also with low volume. It's pretty heavy to carry on gigs
@@BuddaGuedes I watched this video yesterday and today I was curious about using the same settings...mine is the 100 watt version switchable to 60, maybe it differs a bit on bedroom volume. I was hoping for the same results, I tried both single coils and humbuckers but I need to raise the master volume a little bit...but even with 2, 1 1/2 is really too loud...I'm gonna try with more guitars tomorrow maybe
I'm buying one of these amps in a couple of days. Suppose to have some mods done to it. Don't know what and don't care. I love vintage amps and this one is finished in white. Awesome review. Thanks.
Still watching, but I'm noticing that you have mid at 9 for your "clean" sound. In case you don't know, the mid circuit in this amp is designed to work like a regular mid control from 0-5, but it actually acts as a mid-heavy *overdrive* from 5-10. So if you're ever looking for a cleaner sound, try turning that mid control down below 5.
Good stuff man, I have this exact amp, it's my only amp and does everything. I replaced the 2 6l6 output valves and put JJ tesla valves instead which for me sound so much better than the 'boogie' ones that where in it before. Being a blues guitarist myself I only use the clean channel cranked the pre gain on 10 and the master for the clean channel on 2 and have been wondering why it sounds so clean always have the eq on. I see you have the master clean channel volume on 6 and the main master just before 2 which I know when you are in the room with it at that it's ridiculous loud. Sounds spot on 👌 thanks for uploading this. Keep rocking
I can always count on Dr. Guitar to give a great explanation of how an amp works best. On boogie's that's a huge help. Do you have a site to buy your T shirts?
I don't have it yet but i'm thinking about it. The web site is www.doctorguitar.net and it sells musical instruments for guitar players. Thanks for your support.
Thanks for the great demonstration! I've really learned a lot! I own the dc5 too, but the clean sounds never sound as good as in your video... (My Guitar is an '80 Ibanez Roadstar 2 with switchable humbuckers to single coils.) Even when lowering the pickups and using very little gain the cleansound is pretty hard/aggressiv and higher notes kind of pop out way too much. Yet another problem: pulling the knob for the crunch channel, the tone knobs for mid and bass don't react any more, (only the treble). Any suggestion, why that is so? A defect? In clean mode, they all work fine. Up to now I couldn't dial in a nice creamy blues sound with just a touch of drive in that crunch-channel. Even when using only the single coil neck pickup. (Humbuckers get too overdriven.) But it all can be found in the clean channel, right? I try out your settings for sure! Overdrive and distortion in the lead-channel have always been working great though! Btw. - when is it time to renew the tubes? Wait until they brake? Mine are about 25 years old...
You can get a cleaner tone by lowering the eq knobs to less than 5. As for the tones you can change it , but I only do so when the amp it’s malfunctioning. You could clean it and maybe change the caps. The eq behavior with the crunch is really strange!!!
Hi, I just have a small question. I recently bought this amp. It sounds amazing, but I have something going on that is not on any of my other amps. When treble, mid AND bass is set to zero, there is no sound. Otherwise those controls work perfectly. Is that a normal function of the amp? With all eq set to zero, no sound?
@@BuddaGuedes I skipped that part :D I went straight to the playing. Now I have seen the video completely. Great review. And I love the amp! Been eyeballing this little amp for a long time now. Now that I have it, it will be a keeper ;) Thanks.
The 3 band is not a regular 3 band. It is set before the preamp. Meaning that you are changeing the guitar signal going into the amp. Not the actual EQ. The trebele ads gain to the signal and mids and bass doesnt really do much. The real EQ shaping is done byt the graphic EQ. Most mark style boogies are set with really low bass and mids and with a V shape on the graphic EQ.
That’s not 200% right. Every frequency adds gain to the amp. The. You also have a master gain. But the eq is really functional. The V shaped eq is for that mid scooped metal tone. If you want a Marshall tone you’ll need those mids.
I think in the video I play some SRV kind of tones, although it was never my quest. But you'll need a strat, turn the kids to 10, bass on 4 and treble to taste. You'll be there in a minute.
Hey man, great video. Best review I've seen on the DC-5, what would your thoughts/advice be on running a jazz master (p-90s) through the clean channel, andadding distortion and compression pedals etc?
Thanks for a really thorough and great sounding&well recorded review!!!!! I am a new subscriber:):) I'm offered a DC-10 for a good price.. I am actually mainly looking for a clean platform, and though these amps have lots of onboard gain possibilities it seams that they also do cleans well! Do you (..or anyone else for that matter) have any experiences with the DC-10? How would it hold up against a high wattage classic Fender clean-machine (Twin Reverb, Pro Reverb etc) for cleans and pedals? .. will I miss Fender cleans in this amp? Or will this Mesa do cleans in Fender territory quite well?
I just picked up this awesome amp recently. It is also my first tube amp! Thank you for your awesome videos and recommendations. So far I’m loving it. Your video helped introduce me to the amp and motivate me to deep dive into EQing it. I did have a quick question. The amp gets very noisy if I have the master more than 2 and the channel at 8-10. It happens on both channels. Is this normal or a sign of bad tubes? Thank you for the great vids Budda
Hey there! Thanks a lot shout comment. As for the noise it might be a lot of stuf, condensers, tubes, potentiometer, dirt... It’s an olfd amp!!! I’m sure it’s an easy fix! Just take it to an Experienced tech. Thanks for watching the show
hey man, great video i'm looking for a versitile tube amp to play metal, but not that kind of ultra high gain kind of tone, something more late 70's early 80's, full sounding, but still kinda vintage right now, im stuck between the dc-5 or the marshall dsl40c, which one do you recommend? thanks
The gain channel doesnt sound great with the C90 black shadow. I use a V30 and its great for metal and hardcore. I dont understand why there are no good vids of this amp for that genre.
Awesome video man. I bought a DC-5 head a bit after seeing this a while back. It's my main gigging amp now. Run it with an Avatar 2x12 cab with greenbacks. Yours is revisión A though, mine is revision B, has one more switch in the front. The clean channel is supposedly different, more clean. I heard is easy to mod the clean channel to either A or B. I like mine too though, still goes from Fender clean to Santana kind of lead tone.
henriquelhrf I haven't played one but I think they are similar, although the DC2 has EL84 (I think) wich should make it a little more compressed and a lot quieter.
They will be kind of similar. but the best feature of the TA series is the Vox (green) channel. And for you to take advantage of it you will need to play it loud, so probably the DC2 should be a good option. It really depends on taste. The TA 15 is a great all around (except heavy) amp.
Hi Budda. Really good job explaining all the details! I'm not aware if it's been mentioned in one of your other videos but I'm curious if there's a treble bleed on your Knaggs' vol pot? Your tone stays crisp when you roll back and I think I'm hearing a treble bleed, is this true? I also play this way especially with HBs I never go past 7 on the guitar although doing the opposite in the pre-EQ. More treble/less bass. Mesa amps are awesome with adding all the low end you want with the Graphic. Hey, great stuff again! Keep it up.
Não existe um amp que faça tudo. A questão é sempre headroom.

Budda Guedes thank you...despite I could consider myself a metal-guy I really like play blues and jazzy stuff...but I don't know how to begin with jazz chords so I hoped to steal some simple ones by looking at some player and I hoped for this song 'cause it seems not too much articulate.

Shallow Waters you can play it all with this amp. It will handle it.
Thanks for a really thorough and great sounding&well recorded review!!!!! I am a new subscriber:):)
I'm offered a DC-10 for a good price..
I’m guessing it won’t be as clean as a fender
for a spring reverb it sounds great, and it will never get in your way. I think I like this amp better than your lone star.
Is there a way to mod the amp so the pullout gain pot on clean channel could
be foot switched?
I don’t know but that would be great
I just picked up this awesome amp recently.
Thanks for watching the show
hey man, great video
i'm looking for a versitile tube amp to play metal, but not that kind of ultra high gain kind of tone, something more late 70's early 80's, full sounding, but still kinda vintage
right now, im stuck between the dc-5 or the marshall dsl40c, which one do you recommend?
thanks
I really love the DC5 and I'm more a Mesa Boogie guy than a marshall, but it's just a matter of taste.
Thank you dude !!
You’re welcome
Thanks, i have the same amp and you help me
The gain channel doesnt sound great with the C90 black shadow. I use a V30 and its great for metal and hardcore. I dont understand why there are no good vids of this amp for that genre.
Art Keels Me its true!! It's able of great high gain settings!! Even with the black shadow!!!
es similar al mesa boogie Mark III , saludos Budda ¡¡
Awesome video man. I bought a DC-5 head a bit after seeing this a while back. It's my main gigging amp now. Run it with an Avatar 2x12 cab with greenbacks. Yours is revisión A though, mine is revision B, has one more switch in the front. The clean channel is supposedly different, more clean. I heard is easy to mod the clean channel to either A or B. I like mine too though, still goes from Fender clean to Santana kind of lead tone.
Fabian Romano it's a great sounding amp indeed. I love mine as is. I only wish the reverb was more pronounced.
Nice review man, whats was the jazz piece called at @ 25.00
Stuart O Neill it's Just me jamming
you are very good!! real!
Thanks a lot
Amazing video test! Tnx
Hey, Budda, what do you think about the DC-2? Do they have similar tone?
henriquelhrf I haven't played one but I think they are similar, although the DC2 has EL84 (I think) wich should make it a little more compressed and a lot quieter.
Budda Guedes I found the DC-2 and the TA-15 for the same price. Which one would you choose (for playing at home)?
henriquelhrf they're both very good. Does the DC2 has Reverb? If so it might be a plus for the DC2.
Yes, it does! Are its clean and drive better than TA-15's? Thanks for the attention!
They will be kind of similar. but the best feature of the TA series is the Vox (green) channel. And for you to take advantage of it you will need to play it loud, so probably the DC2 should be a good option. It really depends on taste. The TA 15 is a great all around (except heavy) amp.
35:00 that eq shape really makes it sound like a blackface amp driven
Keep it up.
Aris Papadopoulos hey there. Yes I have a treble bleed on my knaggs. Thanks so much for the support
Does it take pedals well?
Yes it does. It’s a great but complex amp.
What is the difference between the DC 3 and the DC 5?
DC 3 is 30 watts and EL84 power section.
Dc5 is 50 watts with 6L6 power section
I have a DC5 and I only use the rhythm channel. The lead channel is just not to my taste, very dark and muddy.
Alguma sugestão para amps pequeno, mais para usar em casa sem ter ficar surdo, mas também tenha qualidade para estudio e ao vivo, abraços
Não existe um amp que faça tudo. A questão é sempre headroom.
Boa.
Hi Tube Doctor,
This is not a DC 5 but a dual caliber 50
Art Keels Me it is a DC-5 Just look at the panel shot right beneath the power switch.
what's the name of that jazz song at 25:00?
trey azagathooth it's a Christmas song I wrote for my wife, called "I'd like to wish you a merry Christmas ". You can look it up on UA-cam too.
Here's the link ua-cam.com/video/VzsV5uYHWQE/v-deo.html
Budda Guedes thank you...despite I could consider myself a metal-guy I really like play blues and jazzy stuff...but I don't know how to begin with jazz chords so I hoped to steal some simple ones by looking at some player and I hoped for this song 'cause it seems not too much articulate.
It’s a simple chord progression
i feel stupid that i sold it back in 2006
Never sell gear
6 L 6 is not warmer than EL 84
andy nguyen why do you say that?
you're actually out of tune
well, you are in tune but nobody else is...so who is the problem? ;) tune into life of no hate :)
That’s it! Share and be happy!
Will it sound good after powerbreak to room level?🥸
Power breaks are also a compromise. But it will sound good
