  • This video is about why looks matter in Nigeria. Walking out of a dusty broken-down car to a business meeting may cost you money. Welcome to Lifestyle, the segment where we explore the lifestyle of Nigerians and how may it impact investors like you.
    Nigerians like to look good. I mean, really really good. How you look indicates your class, money, and privilege. Remember millions of Nigerians do not have access to credit or credit cards. So for the most part when you see a Nigerian with something, car, clothing, house, etc. It’s their own or they are borrowing from someone’ close to them.
    Beauty standards in Nigeria apply to both men and women. Everyone regardless of sex needs to look clean, clothing needs to looks pressed and fit you, accessories need to look new. Anything worn out needs to be repaired. Skincare and manicures and pedicures are huge for both men and women here. You can go to many beauty salons and see a line of men getting pedicures and facials.
    So Why are we making a video about this? Because poverty and distrust are an epidemic in Nigeria. An epidemic is defined as a sudden, widespread occurrence of an undesirable phenomenon.
    Any investor who wants to be taken seriously, needs to look clean and trustworthy. Your entire presentation, from head to toe needs to be professional. You must package yourself well. Especially if you are going after big million or even billion naira deals. If you are going a big contract, they are going to analyze every single thing about you. Your speech, your tone, your skin, your clothing, the fabric of your clothing, your shoes, your briefcase, and even your car. They may walk you to your car at the end of the business meeting, just so they can see what you are driving.

      As a British of Nigerian parents, I use to think that this behaviour of focusing on looks is naive and shallow, however, this is my perception as an outsider, the fact of this is that , it’s driving by the Nigeria culture and a way of life in Nigeria. To us looking from the European culture, it looks alien , but the reality is , this is the Nigeria way of life , it’s the culture. hate it or like it , it’s not going to change. Never . Nigeria like it like that way . Like you put it - Nigeria love packaging themselves. Iveoma , stay bless .

    Controversial as it may sound, Nigerians should spend more time researching, up skilling, having right work ethic, respecting client, bench marking best global practices and respect TIME, these will bring sustainable trust and wealth rather than short term artificial packaging.Chinese and expatriates handling projects concentrate on quality output not clothes.

      @@echetabuemeka4087
      That is neither here nor there. Chinese 'quality' in everything is still better than Nigerian 'quality' in anything. Besides, if not for China, where would Nigerian consumers be? Would the common people in Nigeria buying Chinese imports, electronics, appliances etc be able to afford imports from America or Europe? The cheapest gas stove (cooker) in the US will cost in the neighborhood of $500, so that will be something like N240K in Nigeria, depending on the exchange rate. Whereas for the same quality of stove that China ships to Nigeria, you can buy it for about N50K to N60K in Nigeria. I'm just generalizing here.
      My niece got married. She got this fantastic wedding dress from China for N100K. In the US, same dress in any bridal shop would cost you $1500 easily, if not more.
      So before we bash China for their low quality, remember that, but for China, a lot of what people take for granted in the US or Europe will be out of the reach of a lot of Africans.

      I don't think the two things are mutually exclusive. If you go to a job anywhere in the West (as a man), you're expected to have a suit on no matter your technical expertise. It is the same, but to a different degree. That does not mean you'll come to the business meeting and talk rubbish - you heard her say be on point with your presentation.
      And no you don't have to bench mark against "global" practices. You have to benchmark against practices that YOU develop, test and trust and that are true to your realities.

    Dressing well is a sign of commitment to yourself. I lived in Canada and I don't like the sloppy way they dress. I dress well,I don't waste money on overly expensive garbage, but really affordable nice and decent style and yes it opens doors even in the western world where they act like it don't matter, it does, when I enter places you know you instantly get respect. It's human nature to actually trust someone who looks clean and obviously takes care of themselves. I don't care how much you have in your account at least dress like you value your self. If Nigerians take it a two further and we start keeping our environment clean and classy like we dress then we would have a better nation.

    This is Nigeria's loose version of "due diligence" lol You are vetted by your clothes and your car and lastly by your previous work and know how. I would say it's easier to get recommendations than it is to pull off the charade that you're a big boy.

    • @IveomaMedia
      @IveomaMedia  3 роки тому +1

    • @betalife4women
      @betalife4women 3 роки тому

      Look snazzy but get those recommendations from significant people and make sure you know your stuff and have your act together mentally. The better connected you are...to the right people of course, the better your chances. Ostentation may get attention but it freezes you at a certain level. Savvy business people know the game and they are intentional about who gets into which segment of their concentric circles and for how long.
      I do submit that appearance and personal attractiveness has its perks worldwide but some Nigerians take it to another level especially when it is combined with kow towing. People see through fake. L.O.L.
