In this video I use salvaged timber to make a new woodworking project which requires some work that is very much outside of my comfort zone! Using some Ash hardwood which was reclaimed from some old kitchen doors and drawer fronts, I am making some small beds for cats or small dogs, and the beds need some mattresses and I wanted the covers to be removable, so it was time to get the needle and cotton out... Prepare to see many fails!
If you'd like to buy one of the salvaged wood cat / small dog beds you can find them here: keith-brown-sh...

Your worts and all honesty is what endeared your channel to me many years ago , well done , hiding behind “our” inadequacies is a non starter …well done …good luck as usual..
Thanks 👍
Glad to see the use of ear defenders so you couldn't hear yourself swear when sewing that fabric ... 🙂
Great video. According to my mum I'm a better knitter and sewer than I am a woodworker. My dad, who taught me woodworking, tended to agree with mum.
Very cute!
Keith builds two cat beds, last scene: Cat on chair, not in bed ;-) Anyway, well done and thanks for showing the little error and save with the posts.
Beautiful beds, Keith! Amazing work!!! 😃
Now there are some open needles, that you just put them over the line and it gets hooked in there. I bought some to use here at home!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Great job and well done for trying to sew. We all have to start off somewhere
That cat is beautiful.
I do a fair bit of hand stitching for crafts along side woodworking Keith. An I have big hands, just buy some bigger needles, take a look at leather ones (although they’re a bit overkill) I prefer long crochet ones. Pretty thin but strong and the main thing - easy to thread. An you barely see the hole afterwards.
Not sure why they make such dainty needles like the one your using, I’ve snapped almost every one I’ve ever used.
Really like the project and the execution. Been there for design features coming up short in the build process. You did well overcoming the challenges and Mum did a good job rescuing your stitching. But good on you for trying.
Much appreciated!
Always happy when there's a new Keith video. I also always think of his neice and I say "a new video from Keefy"
😂
Cute idea!
Great channel 👍👍
Thank you 👍
I love the finished beds. Clever idea! Your "faux pas" turned out beautifully.
Thanks so much! 😊
Awesome video. Stop being hard on yourself. You did good 👍🏻
They turned out fantastic.
Great pet beds! Mickie is the best!
Thanks. We agree!
Almost worth buying a cat just so I can justify buying one of these - great project!
so cute. I think it's called right side out 🤣🤣🤣
Great job and has given me some ideas for our two dogs so thank you.
Good build. I have a good amount of oak herringbone floor to use up so possibly may do the same as this.
Nice work, and I’m looking forward to your replies to the Facebook warriors scoffing at you wearing ear defenders while sewing 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
Great job mate 👍
Great little beds. But £41.15 - you don't value your time and efforts highly enough Keith!!!
And in turn, devalue the industry.
Literally can't win, last time I posted something for sale everyone was telling me it was too expensive
Thank you! I figured people don't usually have a big budget where pet beds are concerned 👍
Keith,, £99 to £129 is a fair price and regarding people's budgets for pets, the sky is the limit! I know, my to Shih-tzu's are money hoovers 😂
@@RagnBoneBrownyoure right, people will always comment on price, it comes with the territory. But for that size bed with free materials I think its a decent price from a customer perspective and guaranteed sale. Higher will be fair to you and your time, but you'd have a hard time selling it unless it was bespoke. Rock and a hard place. Take care
I can’t believe your own cat didn’t get a look in. He must be gutted 😂
He's got another twenty three beds 😂
I recently got into palletwood and and a router. Im sure im goint to learn a lot.
dont care if I fail 1000 times
Love your cat/dog beds gutted i missed out. Buy you inspired me years ago to make my own cat bubk beds.
Regarding the design of the mattress cover, the concept is fine but the opening should be close to one of the edges, so it's easier to pull the foam out without having to bend it too much (some types of foam can crack when bent). So the opening is typically 5 cm to 10 from the edge (and usually on the _longer_ side, so it doesn't have to be pushed in so deep).
Glad to see you wearing ear defenders whilst sewing. Was that so you couldn't hear the criticism? 😀
Well... I guess I've seen it all now; a sewing needle breaking mid use. There's an analogy in there somewhere.
You did a great job, nice try on the cushions.
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice beds. Your cat looks like it's got a white dickie bow where its whiskers are 😊
“Right side out” at least in certain parts of the US.
I recon you could have made the original idea of the rebate work by matching the round profile with the inserted piece which would of require a bit of sanding but was definitely doable.
great job Keith, selling that way to cheap though!
Hello Keith I was wondering, I looked on your tool list, but didn't see it, what miter gauge are you using? Thank you, great video, btw!
Opposite of "inside out" is "unside out"
Don't have much sewing experience myself, but you might try again and then double back upon your stitches, (don't know what that method of stitching is called in English, but you loop back after every new stitch?), it stops your hem look bumpy.
Keith get yourself a sewing machine. Lild/Aldi regularly have cheap options available and way easier than trying to hand sew
Time to get a sewing machine, there not difficult to use just like a bandsaw really. Great job though. 👍🏻
Woodworking, sewing. Nearly identical processes. I do both and it's just that fabric is unruly, all floppy and uncooperative at staying in place for joinery. I thought your basic sewing skills were above average. To this day I can't really hand sew a very straight seam but your's was quite good.
Lol around 2.30.......is a good demonstration of how dust masks are worn in the real world!
🤣
Yeah, that needle is ridiculously small / weak for what you're trying to do. That's probably a needle for sewing shirt buttons (they're very thin so they can go through the holes in the buttons and don't make a big hole in the fabric itself). For what you're doing (and if you don't have a sewing machine), you can use a much bigger needle that's easier to thread, easier to push, and won't bend or break.
Love the beds but unfortunately we have 4 cats.
For some unknown reason I thought that you would own a sewing machine 😅 🤷
frayed of what?
What you’ve made is called an envelope style pillow cover. And without a sewing machine! Excellent first go, you have a lot of patience. 😂
Your pet beds are always great, and Mickie is such a handsome fellow.
Thanks so much Trish! ❤️
Looks like poplar/tulip to me? Could be wrong! Im far from an expert.
Does someone make a machine for sewing? Bit like a tablesaw, but for sewing....
