    In this video I use salvaged timber to make a new woodworking project which requires some work that is very much outside of my comfort zone! Using some Ash hardwood which was reclaimed from some old kitchen doors and drawer fronts, I am making some small beds for cats or small dogs, and the beds need some mattresses and I wanted the covers to be removable, so it was time to get the needle and cotton out... Prepare to see many fails!

    Great video. According to my mum I'm a better knitter and sewer than I am a woodworker. My dad, who taught me woodworking, tended to agree with mum.

    Keith builds two cat beds, last scene: Cat on chair, not in bed ;-) Anyway, well done and thanks for showing the little error and save with the posts.

    Beautiful beds, Keith! Amazing work!!! 😃
    Now there are some open needles, that you just put them over the line and it gets hooked in there. I bought some to use here at home!
    Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

    I do a fair bit of hand stitching for crafts along side woodworking Keith. An I have big hands, just buy some bigger needles, take a look at leather ones (although they’re a bit overkill) I prefer long crochet ones. Pretty thin but strong and the main thing - easy to thread. An you barely see the hole afterwards.
    Not sure why they make such dainty needles like the one your using, I’ve snapped almost every one I’ve ever used.

    Really like the project and the execution. Been there for design features coming up short in the build process. You did well overcoming the challenges and Mum did a good job rescuing your stitching. But good on you for trying.

      @@RagnBoneBrownyoure right, people will always comment on price, it comes with the territory. But for that size bed with free materials I think its a decent price from a customer perspective and guaranteed sale. Higher will be fair to you and your time, but you'd have a hard time selling it unless it was bespoke. Rock and a hard place. Take care

    Regarding the design of the mattress cover, the concept is fine but the opening should be close to one of the edges, so it's easier to pull the foam out without having to bend it too much (some types of foam can crack when bent). So the opening is typically 5 cm to 10 from the edge (and usually on the _longer_ side, so it doesn't have to be pushed in so deep).

    I recon you could have made the original idea of the rebate work by matching the round profile with the inserted piece which would of require a bit of sanding but was definitely doable.

    Don't have much sewing experience myself, but you might try again and then double back upon your stitches, (don't know what that method of stitching is called in English, but you loop back after every new stitch?), it stops your hem look bumpy.

    Keith get yourself a sewing machine. Lild/Aldi regularly have cheap options available and way easier than trying to hand sew

    Woodworking, sewing. Nearly identical processes. I do both and it's just that fabric is unruly, all floppy and uncooperative at staying in place for joinery. I thought your basic sewing skills were above average. To this day I can't really hand sew a very straight seam but your's was quite good.

  • @RFC3514
    @RFC3514 4 години тому

    Yeah, that needle is ridiculously small / weak for what you're trying to do. That's probably a needle for sewing shirt buttons (they're very thin so they can go through the holes in the buttons and don't make a big hole in the fabric itself). For what you're doing (and if you don't have a sewing machine), you can use a much bigger needle that's easier to thread, easier to push, and won't bend or break.
