Income tax was started after the civil war as a temporary measure to repair infrastructure destroyed during the war.
It was supposed to be TEMPORARY, however the government is a fiend hooked on taxes and once they get money they start to rely on it.
To this day 95% of imposed taxes have never been overturned.

Do you think people shouldn't pay for the infrastructure they use? The land they lease? And the services they use?
If you drive on our roads, use our cellular infrastructure or use our utilities infrastructure. Pay for it, or move to the forest. Our infrastructure is crumbling as it is because it doesn't get the required funding and you will be the first to complain when a bridge collapses on your mom's car.

The simple fact is a sack of cement to fix a crack in a bridge does not cost the same as a sack of cement 50 years ago. Plus 50 years ago, you did not have architects material scientists and structural scientists constantly observing the degredation of our bridges. 50 years ago you did not have the same construction worker saftey requirements you have today.
The consultants (architects material scientists and structural scientists), saftey equiptment and inflation on a bag of cemement means that fixing a crack in a bridge is obviosuly oging to cost more today than 50 years ago, thus you should pay more tax than people did 50 years ago. Plus average wages have increased from 50 years ago, so don't act you don't have the extra $23.27 spare.
There are dumb taxes that need to be reformed, but this ain't it chief.

The government doesn't even complicate it on purpose, they try making it easier and have lots of free services to help people. It's the big corporations that make money off of filing people's taxes that lobby for complicated taxes laws so that they can stay in business.

@@davidk4860 No Intuit (aka TurboTax) and other big firms like H&R Block lobby the government to make filing taxes more difficult bc they get more money and business from people trying to file their taxes. The IRS knows how much you owe but makes the taxpayer handle everything. This is ridiculous in this era because our level of tech can make up for what would have required hundreds of accountants to do back in the day, so you'd think we'd modernize this system like the gov't has updated many other administrative things.
It's always the lobbies you have to look out for. The government only does what the lobbies want because the US is in so much debt they'll listen to any organization that will pay them large amounts of money. It also helps that bc the lobbyists are in an organized group, they can be much louder in what they want and get a more direct line to our representatives in office compared to the ordinary, unaffiliated person. If the government takes care of filing our taxes for us, major players in the finance and brokerage industries will lose tons of money in the long term. This is why we're are forced to do our taxes. The government isn't guiltless here, but it's not all their fault as you make it out to be.
Taxes are essential for a properly functioning society because we must pay the people who protect our rights and give us security from outside forces wanting what we have. This includes the FBI, Military Forces, and infrastructural departments like the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Transportation. But paying taxes doesn't have to be as painful as they make it nowadays.

I paid to have my taxes done. They were filed incorrectly and by the time they contacted me to let me know my taxes were denied, it was past April 17th. So then I had to pay a late fee. It's fucking stupid.

I hate taxes with a burning passion. It genuinely makes me violently angry knowing I lose thousands of dollars every year to taxes.
It's weird because IRS knows exactly how much money you owe them, but somehow they still want you to do your own taxes and tell them how much you owe. That doesn't make any sense when they can just tell you how much exactly you owe, so you don't have to go through all this breakdown of numbers to tell them how much taxes you owe them.
What is a lot weirder, if they figure that they didn’t tax you enough, u owe them, like what 😂
This is not a problem in Sweden, your tax get deducted every month automatically from your paycheck, now the tax is 30% of your income which is alot, but we get free healthcare and free college, also if you work a mid job and have like a 3500$ monthly income, you get back somewhere inbetween 2000$-3000$ at the start of May every year.

The problem wasn't the lack of paying taxes in principle, it was the lack of an alternative administration and pool of money to subsidise the needs that the taxes were supposed to be satisfying.
The tax system in theory isn't a problem, the problem is the amount of taxes in terms of where and how much is being applied and the accountability of where they eventually end up. There is absolutely no doubt money is being put to sleep.
There doesn't need to be taxes for nearly everything and the percentages don't need to be anywhere near as high as they are.
But a lack of any system for maintaining infrastructure is a recipe for disaster, because then you're relying on the public willingly and consistently contributing unprompted and also managing the infrastructure between them, which, with the neo-consumerism culture the west has perpetuated for decades, we know is never going to happen.
It's no different to the charity funding argument.

In france, like almost everywhere else on the world, taxes are automatically subtracted from salaries before pay, so when you negotiate a salary you negotiate what you get paid, not what the nominal theoretical value of the contract is. Let the companies pay them taxes, the individuals do not feel cheated out of their money, and it's simpler and better for everyone involved.
Taxes in europe are high AF too, but it feels like you do not pay them, the company pays them. You didn't negotiate what the declared taxable income will be, you negotiated what you'll be paid after tax deduction. So it doesn't feel as a hit to the guts.
Other taxes like tacing people for the unforgivable sin of dying or of living, is messed up though.

The US system gives the individual an opportunity to pay them or not pay them and get charged, it at least gives a degree of agency and autonomy to one's rights. Same system is in Switzerland I believe.

I am not american but I am paying property tax on a house that my great grandparents built, basicly with their own hands (working class people at the time). The property it was built on, was paid by them a long damn time ago...so why the hell am I still paying the state for something, that my ancestors paid for fully over a 100 years ago already?

Devil's advocate here: probably because possibly you get street maintenance, water service, garbage collection, etc etc in your area?? Probably... however, property taxes be going UP each year and in some cases are insanely high. I think it's a scam that they go up every year, at least here in the states. Don't know where you are. Property taxes should be capped to something reasonable and nothing more. But I agree with you.

Just to let you know, irs only does income tax and death tax. It was arguable whether income tax was constitutional so they amended the Constitution so the govt can tax income.
Sales and property taxes comes from state and local government. States can also tax on your income too.
It was specifically prohibited in the constitution, which was why they had to amend it.

@@Catchcookie nope...depending on what you make it's like 35% taxes in those two states. Can be even more. Especially if you make over 80k. My friend went to both NY and Cali as a travel medic. He put in mad overtime. He was making over 10k a month but after taxes it was 6k. Working 80 hour weeks... He ended up leaving because it wasn't worth it in taxes. Think about it, you're literally doing 24 hour shifts because your job is so short handed and you're saving LIVES and the government takes 10 hours of your labor. It's fucked up.
