This is literally what happened to me when I was offered a major record deal in the early 2000’s and I tried to get one deep song on the album before the ink was dry, and they told me we’re in the business of selling records, not messages, and they dropped the deal. It was the same people that had signed Lauryn Hill, and it was right after she made the Unplugged album of deep songs and went hiatus, when her career was never the same after that. I understood why. And they were also trying to get me to dress the way female rappers do today. It was right before Nicki Minaj came and out, and when she came out, and she changed her body and got a BBL and became Lil Kimish (even got into it with Lil Kim for posing like her at that time), I thought to myself, that’s exactly what they were trying to do with me. I had another major label try to sign me after that, but things didn’t work out with them either. I felt: Ain’t worth gaining the whole world and losing your soul. I’m glad God pulled me out of that.

Griff is speaking facts, Record labels wants to sign people who rap about violence and drugs only but they don't want to sign people who rap about Social issues like Poverty, depression or Racism
Music labels will sign anyone that will make them a return on their investment. Plenty of conscious emcees have been signed. But will the people listen to them? People say rappers like Nas, Common, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco even J.Cole etc. are boring. The majority of people would rather listen to simplistic rap music than have to listen to lyrical rap about saving the world. Everything is not the label's fault.
