Hello everyone! This video was filmed a few weeks ago but I hadn't had time to edit & upload it until now 🥲 Sorry that it's so late! 💖 I have missed being at the plot & making videos & chatting to you all in the comments so much!! Unfortunately there has been quite a bit of storm damage since I filmed this, but more on that later this week! Nothing that can't be fixed, but I am still sad nonetheless 🥲 I hope you are all well and have stayed safe in this crazy weather!! 💖💖💖
Your leeks are fabulous!! As for the garlic, you inspired me to try to grow garlic in a pot in my kitchen with a small grow light. It's working!😊 Thank you for teaching this old dog a new trick, Seren!
An old pizza pan with a hole the right size slid up under the feeders should keep squirrels out. You may need something under, like a ring or large washer and tape to hold the pan in place. They do sell things like this to deter squirrels. I have a spring loaded feeder that closes the accesses from the weight of the squirrels. It has a screen around that drops. Alternative is to add hot chili powder, the birds don't taste it but the squirrels will. Hot chili powder also keeps rodents at bay, but this needs to be replenished after rains. Essentially a barrier that blocks the squirrels from feeders is what people use. May I suggest you get some sort of tether for the pole, winds can catch the seed container and knock it over.
If your greenhouse is just blown off the foundation and there isn't any crazy frame damage, it's probably not as big of a job that you think it is. I would get help to move the frame back onto the brick foundation and then attach the frame to the brick with concrete/masonry screws. Make sure to use a masonry bit to drill holes first. Then you can use plexiglass like you were saying to temporarily replace the broken glass until you can get glass to fix it. Hopefully it can be repaired with a little diy and elbow grease. I know the greenhouse was a big part of you choosing this plot.
The greenhouse should be screwed to the base Seren. The base seems fairly strong and more importantly level . Getting very close to 10,000 subscribers now after all your hard hard work. Anyone who hasn't subscribed go and do it now and make Seren happy for Christmas.
Greenhouse steps to make it easier and quicker. (1) measure uo broken glass and cut 2mm polycarbon replacements. (2) remove the damaged glass sections, presume clipped in with "W shaped clips" (3) remove as manyy other glass panes as you can to avois further breaking when re jigging the frame & lightening the load, the more you remove the lighter the frame will be and putting the frames back taes no time at all really. (3) two able people should be able to lift the frame then and place it back on the brick bed. (4) Secure the frame down to the brics at each corner and pre drill the holes ready to use concrete bolts (self threading) self threading for the corner fixings go to a DI store and get some corner fixing brackets (Triangular shape with upstand on two edges) then use those to pinch the frame down in the corners, also use washers under the bolt heads. (5) Re install the glass panels either using the rubber gasket or you could use a bead of silicon on the frame and push glass onto it befor applying clips. I would say a good day with two people woring together would get it done. Assuming there is nof twisted frame sections, then it gets mess and TBH if that is the case get another greenhouse.
Well done on the flower bed! You’ve come so far! I’ve been watching since the beginning and am so impressed with what you’ve accomplished and how you e transformed that allotment plot! Helps keep me motivated all the way over here in Washington!
Sorry about your greenhouse , Seren. Hope you can get it fixed. Those leaks looked pretty good to me. Just seen a clip from your first vlog . As others have pointed out, you have done amazingly well to get it looking this good in a relatively short space of time. Thanks for posting.
So sorry about your shed. All the damage on our local allotments has been heartbreaking. I have the exact same birdfeeder as you! I've also got a ton of bulbs from Farmer Gracy to go in. 😊
If you had damage others there will have damage too, so talk to others about helping to re-establish your greenhouse and once done you can help others. This is the way it can work with plots. Good luck.
I’ve used squirrel baffle domes (Perspex half domes that hang or slide onto the feeding pole) for years now. Stops squirrels or rodents climbing up the poles.
Hi Seren, Your spring bulb bed will look fantastic. Those Grape Hyacinth (Muscari) self sow and will take over. My greenhouse sits on slabs and is screwed down to them with brackets.
My uncle wraps the bird feeder pole with thorny rose bush branches to keep the squirrels off. You’ll obviously need to use gloves to protect your hands. I’m in New York, so I don’t work in my garden all winter. I will begin in March, pruning my roses and Rose of Sharon. I’ll also repair my fence, which will then be painted when it gets warm enough. I’m interested in how you work in the allotment through these winter months. I do like the way you are organizing the beds and planting bulbs for spring! Also: the greenhouse is salvageable, just get help to move it back onto the foundation and secure it. Dress warm so you can work comfortably. ❤
Put the soil from the potato bed through a garden sieve to catch the small potatos and put them aside to use as chits for next years planting. Wrap in newspaper in paper bags.
Nice editing skills. Since you're into flowers I'd suggest buying a few ginger tubers and planting them out in Spring (Curtis Stone has a few videos on it). People say even the leaves are fragrant and it can grow in temperate climates from Spring till Fall, and you'll get fragrant tubers that are better than what you buy from the store.
I share your love for the wee songbirds, Seren. Thank you for thinking of them as winter draws in. I’m glad you came through that storm unscathed. I’m in northern Canada, so our winter is pretty advanced. So sorry for your greenhouse- wow- that must have been one heck of a wind! Your editing gets better every time, lovely music and photography! Your dahlia’s have monster tubers! ❤️🇨🇦❄️☃️
If you have time, go to a building centre and show them pictures of your greenhouse damage. They may be able to suggest a solution and/or someone to help you with the repair. I am so sorry that you are having this issue but, sadly, Mother Nature can scupper our plans in a heartbeat! This, too, shall pass.❤
I sympathise with you, my greenhouse, albeit a plastic covered one was completely destroyed in the storm. Ah we'll, looking forward to the spring and setting up a new one.
It's ok sere we all know about the storm damage In uk it's been horrendous Weather cold, dreary rainy as long as our favourite newbie allotment owner is ok so are we so just take time think with a calm lhead and Emma from Emma's Allotment Diaries said greenhouses are going cheap this month buy one and use the glass from the old one on your beds when you start growing in them again use it as a type of cold frame or just plonk it on top of your beds when you start seeds next year
lovely idea to have a year round flower bed. How about snowdrops and hellebores for January? Some hellebores even start to flower in December. I believe Darwin varieties of tulip are reliably perennial too, as well as the species, if that's any help Seren? Happy growing :-)
You have an area where things can be put for other people don’t you, perhaps you could put the shower screens and old compost bin/water but there, although I cut my old compost bin in half so that I can grow carrots in the two halves hopefully keeping them above the carrot root fly.
I'm Sorry about your green house I know you love it I'm hoping you can salvage it!about your favourite dahlia, do you know what the variety is? I want to grow some next year on my plot as it was absolutely beautiful x
Thank you! I think the greenhouse will be ok.. with a lot of work 😅 The dahlia was grown from seed and called a 'dwarf double' 🥲 They were so pretty but all so different! 🌸 Chiltern Seeds have similar looking seeds! They're called 'Showpiece Double Mixed' 🥰

Thank you so much Catherine 🥰
Very satisfying watching the new bed creation, go you and that drill! 🩷

Keep moving forward with your plans for your allottment. You never know when little unexpected surprises will come your way😉❤
You have a green thumb and your plot is looking much better than first time round, slowly but surely you will get there 😊
A lovely new (and neat) bed - I can only imagine how stunning it's going to look when all the bulbs are flowering. Something to look forward to.

Thank you so much for watching Valerie! 🥰✨

Can't wait to see your tulips and crocuses 🤗. The bed looks very neat. 👍. 💜💙💚💛🧡❤️❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
If you grease the bottom up to about halfway up on the bird station pole with vaseline it'll stop squirrels climbing up. They'll have no grip.
Bet you that they'll just take a running jump and use the vaseline to help project them up the greasy pole.
So sorry about your shed. All the damage on our local allotments has been heartbreaking.

So sorry to hear about the damage to your greenhouse.
Thank you! It is such a shame 🥲
There has to be a way to right the damaged greenhouse. I’d ask someone who works with greenhouses. Then get some people to help

Oh no so sorry to hear about your greenhouse ❤

Looking forward to seeing the bulbs!
Primulas are flowering now at the garden centre and will go on for weeks. Also perennial and very tough.
I recommend watching Garden Answer UA-cam channel… Laura has videos on Dahlia tubers , how to separate them etc
Yes! I was going to mention Laura as well.
Nice editing skills. Since you're into flowers I'd suggest buying a few ginger tubers and planting them out in Spring (Curtis Stone has a few videos on it). So sad about the greenhouse! With some handyman advice, perhaps the fix will be easier than you think.
It is sad 🥲 but I think it'll be ok... eventually haha
Congratulations o a excellent few months. Personally would add some for-get-me-nots, primula and Lobelia for growing among your bulbs.
A length of stove pipe placed around the pole will stop squirrels from climbing up to the food.
If you have time, go to a building centre and show them pictures of your greenhouse damage. They may be able to suggest a solution and/or someone to help you with the repair. Oh nooo! That is such a shame 🥲 I am also very much looking forward to spring 😅
Hellebores and snowdrops flower in December and January. Hellebores are available at garden centres at the moment.
Yes - My white hellebores are flowering now. Hopefully the snowdrops in January, then dwarf daffodils in February.

Bet there's lots of wildlife hibernating at the back of your plot 😊
You have an area where things can be put for other people don’t you, perhaps you could put the shower screens and old compost bin/water but there, although I cut my old compost bin in half so that I can grow carrots in the two halves hopefully keeping them above the carrot root fly.
That’s a good idea - I think I will try that next year as I’ve never managed to grow a decent crop of carrots.
It's best to buy Snowdrops when they're "in the green" i.e. the flowering plant not from bulbs.
I made potato leek soup today..😊
It's the best soup! 😋🥔

Hi Seren when did you plant your leeks? Xxxx
If you plant sunflower the will help clean the soil👩🌾sorry for your greenhouse 🥲
:)
