Thanks for the review. Great price for a radio with 4 bands. Nice audio too. Wish it had a 6 pin connector for digital but for the price I understand. Thanks for this and all your other videos! ARES here uses TM-V71A w/ TNC or Signalink 73, Tony KE4VVF
Thanks for the review Frank. We just added a 6m repeater in Region 5 here in CT so I may want to add mobile 6m capability. This would be a cost effective way to do it. I suppose I wouldn't be a real ham if I didn't have at least 2 mobile rigs in the car. Other one is a Kenwood D710. You sound good, strong voice. Keep it up. 73, Sander W1SOP
I've just gotten one of these (installed it last Sunday). So far, I love it. Works great on 6m and 2m with the recommended quad-band antenna -- I even had my first 2m simplex QSO yesterday (after calling CQ for around twenty minutes while driving home from work). I don't use UHF much, and there are only two 10m repeaters in my area, neither one accessible from home (haven't tried them on the road yet). This is a lot of radio for the money.
love the radio it gives you a list of functions does not tell you how to use those functions?? so how do you get to the functions???its in the manual under fucntions but don't know how to activate.the manual is never clear
how to appear the labels???of memories? because in my machine appear only frequencies....I store memories and i store and name alpha character but i cannot to appear this labe on display....Only frequencies...appear. Plase help me...thanks
I love mine so far! Cross band is great too. Only wish I could do SSB on 10 and 6 meters but oh well, besides we have a 330watt 1000foot~ six meter repeater in my county at about 1450feet elevation so I'm very eager to get on 6. While I won't complain about quad band it does seam like they could have added the 1.25meter band / 220 Band pretty easily, maybe I'm wrong but I'd trade the 350/750/850 Rx for 220 Tx/Rx any day...of course Rx is much easier to make than Tx but still, great deal for the price! Currently using as a base station, once I get a decent car I'm going to be torn between using an HT in the car or this!
im looking heavily at one of these.. if I understand right... ther eis a menu option that needs to be changed in order to go 10 meter AM is that correct?
Great review..I am thinking of buying one...but am trying to find out how the control head can mount remotely?? DIN opening? mounting bracket? make your own? anyway--any advice on remote mounting the head would be appreciated. Thanks for reviewing.
I did not mount mine remotely as it is built into a pelican case kit. It comes with a plastic remote head mount (just found it again). It has many screw holes and such for many positions...I remember the cable is a 6 pin RJ-12 type (like the mic).
I have this radio and it worked fine for awhile. The radio now beeps constantly, If I turn the squelch turned down the radio beeps shut off but the beeps turn into a burst of static on and off about every second just like the beeps were. If I turn the squelch back to the right the beeps start again on and off about every second. This just started doing this and I can not get the beeps to stop except when I hit the PPT button. Any ideas on what might be causing this problem and how to fix it would be truly appreciated. KE0RPU Show less
Theoretically, one could use this radio for GMRS and CB, although you could only RX on regular CB, you can only TX on FM CB, as opposed to AM, which most US cb radios use. Legally though, it's probably a different story.
Rick......amazingly, it is still holding up ok. I use it several times per week without any issues. I think the Chinese product quality control is getting better every day and they have improved the product. A friend has purchased a new one and the fan/heatsink seems better with the radio running a bit cooler. Based on my experience, I still recommend the radio......
have they solved their QC issues? What is the actual TX freq. coverage. Does anyone know if the mic pinout is Yaesu or Kenwood compatible, I would like to use a non dtmf mic. Thanks to anyone if they can help.
QC has gotten better, but it can still be a crapshoot sometimes. They still have a long way to equal Japan. Frequency range is 26-33, 47.54, 134-174, 400-480.....also receives 750-950mhz. Unfortunately mic is non standard. It does use a 6 pin, but is NOT a standard pinout that you can get easily. If you want an alternate mic, you'll have to wire it up yourself
I am looking for a radio that can do 11 meter, and has 750-950 MHz TX I would like to be able to transmit on 11 meter, 2 meter and 440, but not sure what antenna to use. will likely not find anything that can do all that in a single radio......11m would use an HF rf deck.....getting a radio to cover that wide a TX range including 700-900 TX is a no go......
I don't need to transmit on 750 to 950 just receive and I thought this radio received that range? As for 11 meter, this radio does 10 meter. I thought it did 11 meter as well, with a software change. Does It receives 25 to 29 MHz ?
@@ocsrc Ok......the reason I mentioned it is because you put 750-950 TX in your original post, not RX. It will do those ranges, but you will need to have a frequency file that has the expanded range to do that to overcome the locked frequency range. I am thinking about ordering a couple of these, I am wondering if it transmits on fm at 11 meters? I have several friends that have not made it to ham yet, I'd like to be able to use this and hit therm with FM.
I actually have one now, like it so much just ordered another one. Mine does not receive am very well at all. FM anywhere though, with no trouble. For the money, its a nice radio! I will have 4 when I'm done. Going to use them to create links to our local repeater to increase its range.
+Kelly Lloyd Probably fix that with an antenna. On AM what frequency are you using? Out of band antennas are good at Rx'ing signals but a proper antenna for the specific AM band might help a bit more.
It does transmit on fm on 11 meters. The encrypted voice also works well on 11 meters. I have used it with a 102" whip to cover all 11 meters up to 10 meter fm. Cross bands like a champ! Needs a much bigger fan if you are cross banding on high. I used it as a link to our local repeater when our normal link was damaged, it ran high/vhf med/uhf for two weeks being talked on all day and half the night, never missed a beat. I made a box around it, open on two ends, added a 5" fan, and it stayed very cool. For the money, cant be beat. Love it, bout two! I now have a quad band mfj antenna. Seems to work well, but VERY narrow banded.
Diamond makes the CR8900A and Comet makes the UHV-4. I've only used the Diamond and cannot speak for the Comet. The CR8900A worked, but there is definitely some sacrifice in performance in squeezing 4 bands into it. It is also a long antenna. If you use it, make sure you have a good solid mount.
Jason Fisher I tried the Comet UHV-4.......Anytime you go quadband antenna, it's a big compromise. In addition, it was just too big and unwieldy. It did not do well during our horrible winter in MA this year. Since we have limited 10M repeaters in my area, I went back to the Comet EX-510B 2m,6m, 440 antenna. It shorter and does better in ice and snow.....thanks for asking
Jason Fisher I should also say that the UHV-4 was hooked to an actual FT-8900 I had before I got the TH-9800, but my thoughts of that antenna are still the same
Frank Olaughlin I am mainly wanting to hit a 2 meter and 70cm repeaters about 20 to 30 miles away. So I probably will have to go with something directional.
+Jason Fisher I'm hitting GMRS repeaters 19 miles from my house with a J-Pole antenna that is about 15 off the ground at 20 watts. This is a nice little radio.
You can prolly do a frequency scan on both sides, but the memory channels are drawn from the same memory bank, so I do not believe so. Some other Yaesu radios can.

It's hard to get a good base antenna that coverall all 4 bands. I think Austin antenna makes one, but it's a compromise. Most people get a triband base for 6m, 2m, 440 like the Comet GP-15 or Diamond V2000. Then get a 10m vertical separately. Many CB base antennas are tunable or can be cut for 10m.
@@fieldops1 Nope, not true! I have a brand new one right here before me and it only does 29/50/144/430 Mhz, nothing out of band. The TYT software has a window that will pop up showing band coverage but only lists the Ham bands and it can't be changed to add airband or anything like that. You can punch in some other frequency on the mike keypad like 136 Mhz but it won't take that and just goes back to 144 Mhz or where ever it was before.
