Using the paper to separate the fittings and lines from each other and seeing which side of the paper the smoke builds up on is a great tip to remember. If you've got two things right next to each other it keeps the smoke on the side that it's coming from. I'm slipping some sheets of paper into my leak kit right now so I don't forget that one. One of the easiest and best tips I've heard of in a long time. Thanks guys. Jpol.

Good point, about how bad stick lights are for finding smoke. You need the high contrast of a point source. A broad light source from behind is better for video generally but a point source from the side is better to highlight subtle defects. When doing drywall or body work I use a point source from the side to highlight shadows.

There is a recall on those canisters. This car has the auxilary canister installed (in the vent pipe, right above the exhaust pipe before the vent valve) which should have only been installed if the original canister passed. The most common crack is in the plastic around the brass bushings where the bracket bolts go into, if you wire brush around them you can usually see a line going away from the brass grommet in the plastic. Depending on the year and if it is a QF or TF Optima (different plants made them) the recall would replace the canister if cracked, replace the bracket with new bolts and soft washers if it passed, or add that aux canister as seen on this car which would have been installed if it passed when it was in for the recall or recall was not performed correctly.

Spoke too soon on the evap leak lol. I am in the process of diagnosing an AC fault using your techniques :). Thought it just leaked out some refrigerant so I put the manifold gauges on ready to fill it up and realized the ac clutch isn't kicking on. After hooking my scanner up I noticed the computer was commanding the ac clutch on so that told me the inputs are good and that I needed to look at the outputs. The relay is kicking on so that tells me the ac clutch output to the relay is good and that I need to check for the power, ground, and the pcm telling the ac clutch to turn on at the compressor. If I have that then I need a new compressor/ ac clutch. It took my longer to type this down than it did to go through the thought process in my head, that's how powerful your teachings are :). I'll let you know what the fix ends up being.
