Almost every time I search to review a laptop, this reviewer comes up. I've just watched a dozen different reviews by Lisa and I have to say, she's awesome at covering all the important (and less important) stuff! I was trying to talk myself out of this laptop (which I've already purchased and Dell keeps delaying it's ship date), but I think I'll stick with it. Thanks Lisa, for the excellent reviews and attention to detail!
Glad your viewing number finally stabilized and better reflect your sub numbers. For a while it was weird seeing 500K+ subs, but many videos at ~15K and with the odd 50-100K. Also seems that people went back to watch your older videos (or the stabilization is not as new as I think it is) as I go back and it's almost impossible to prove what I am saying! =-)
The soldered on ram is a deal breaker for me. I’m looking at getting a gaming laptop and keep going back and forth between the Alienware m17 r3 and the Lenovo legion i7. I cant decide the Alienware ram issue and only 512gb standard ssd for the high price Bugs me. The Lenovo throttles down because of heat issues and that bugs me but it’s about $500 cheaper. The decision is killing me.

@@kdude1000 well, good for you. mine took 45 days for the R2, but like 3-7 days for the R3. Whats going on dell? why so fast. But anyways much faster then the old R2. On world of warship or mechwarrior 5 FPS I got was 65 on WOW or MW5 was 55 but on the R3 WOW I get 85-120 FPS and thats with the 2070 super, i7 10750H, 16GB ram and 4k screen.
I had it but returned it. The constant fan noise even during idle killed it for me. I undervalted it which had the Temps only at 60 C during idle, the fan just wouldn't stop even on quiet mode. Ended up returning it
Soldered RAM is an understandable in LG Gram, MacBook Air, Carbon X1, Zenbooks....which sometimes still have at least one empty socket. In any other case it is just artificial limiting ( 10th gen CPUs officially support 64 GB and 32 GB SO-DIMMS unofficially work even with 7th gen). As far as serviceability and extensibility goes, Dell Latitude / XPS series are nice ones - at least drives and memory is usually accessible. Really, 16:10 2k displays also should become standard in laptops.
Great job. I've been waiting on this. I have the same configuration but mine regularly hits 100deg C. I've tested GTA, assassin's Creed, shadow of the tomb raider.

Here is something fun no one is mentioning. The usb-c port charges the laptop. So you can use a 65w usb-c charger to charge it. You get a warning that the charger is too small, but it is nice to have if you are gonna travel with this to work or school you can bring a smaller charger with you.

I used than 2K TN panel 120 Hz display in Alienware and still loves it. Despite being a TN Panel, it was very bright, almost 460 nits, very fast response time and very good color gamut which is perfectly fine for professional work. 2K 120 Hz panel should be available to more of these highly powerful laptops.
I have the 4k and I usually won't risk going unplugged for longer than switching from office to the livingroom. It's pretty bad. This lady knows her stuff.
i bought this laptop a week ago and im only playing cs go and league of legends. Buttons get extremely hot even with a cooling pad. 85-100c on not so demanding games. Not sure what to do anymore
Thanks for the review Lisa. Based on my experience with the R3 it does much better thermally than the R2 and R1, I had the M15 R2 in Lunar Light color and found it difficult to see the RGB keys and this time opted for the Dark Side for the R3 and it is so much better. I also like how the entire system is one color instead of being broken up by the front and rear dark color. I had the 300Hz panel with a 2080 Super and was only getting 1 1/2 hours of battery life with all battery saving systems active and screen brightness set to 50% and online streaming media. Others have reported getting 4 1/2 hours and curious about how you were getting 3 1/2 hours. What was done to achieve that amount of time? Many owners have complained about battery life and have reported results in line with my experience. Now the issue I encounter with my system. On my system, the Rear IO Plate on is angled to match the design aesthetic which is preventing cables/plugs from seating flush with the system. I have a number of plugs I can not use because they are not able to go in enough to create a full connection. As an example, the power plug would only push into the port so far and left a good 1/8" outside of the system when viewed from the top! The power cable kept coming out and disconnecting from the system. Also, I was not able to use the Thunderbolt 3 port on the back for the same reason. I tried four different USB-C cables and I could not get any of them to seat fully. None provided a connection to the system! These cables all work on other systems and connected fine. I am not sure if this was just my unit or a design flaw but I sent it back. Interesting David I thought the R3 had a full vapor chamber and wasn't aware it only covered the CPU. Dell's description of this unit is deceiving regarding this. The keyboard was nice and I didn't have any fan issues but was underwhelmed by the screen as well. It seemed washed out. I also find the system a bit uncomfortable to carry around. The rear system design just doesn't feel comfortable to carry for me at least. Also if you only purchase on SSD you will only get a heat sink for that SSD and one will be needed if you add another SSD to the system. I wish the RJ-45 port was on the back and not on the side with a collapsible port. It can be a pain to connect and disconnect a network cable. You will have to raise the system in order to do so.
Great review! The inverted motherboard helps with thermodynamics I believe. Thermal paste was necessary on the cpu on mine that was running at 60 to 100c because they overpasted like crazy. After repasting I am seeing 39 to 69 temps. The gpu runs at 45c to 60c on my gsync model.(repasting didn’t do much and battery life is good enough for a power outage and that’s about it). The cpu hitches on the 10750h If on anything below performance mode on the fans but will catch up one the fans kick in. I use my thunderbolt as my main game drive and works great. The speakers are great but wish they would have driven more bass. Even an eq can’t push it hard enough for what they could have. I’m curious if the cool mode automatically undervolts because I’ve seen the voltages drop without hz dropping.and xtu is built in? I run mine on cool and games tend to run very well. Balance acts like an indecisive flake. The intake on the top has a filter so don’t use compressed air on it!! Use a dust vacuum for cleaning. Soldered ram is becoming more common but lame. I ended up with the 16gig model and just increased my page file to 32 gig. If I were to recommend any upgrade to this thing I would suggest installing Samsung qlc (because it is cooler) and putting it in raid. The custom wd ssd is slow at writes and doesn’t work too well for page file and caching. Happy gaming!
I got the 17M R2. Best laptop I've ever owned. And I don't even game, I use it to work. I owned the HP Specter x360 before, which was amazing. This one's waaaay better.
I read the reviews on Dell website, many customers still facing the thermal issue with the R3 version. I've been wanting this laptop since R2 but I can't risk it since I'm from South East Asia (it's hot climate here). I guess I'm gonna have to skip this one and wait for the R4 with AMD.
I'm so confused by this video. My m17R3 with an i9-10980HK runs at 90-99 degrees C even with a light workload. I had to underclock the processor and use a 70%+ fan profile to stay below 80. If you look at the Alienware Command center for the overclock section, anything over 4.4Ghz is yellow, and honestly, anything I set it to over 4.4Ghz causes the laptop to start going over 90. The default out of the box profile has it set to be over 5Ghz... Is this normal??

This thing is way more powerful than the Razer. I almost bought the 17 pro as well but went with the i9 2080 super m17 r3 and man this thing is a beast! If you want to get the best performance for the price, look no further.
Lisa, when are you going to do the XPS 17? You're the only reviewer whose opinion on cooling I actually trust. (The other reviewers discuss laptop thermals *WITHIN* the chassis but not the more relevant metric of the thermals: "finger comfort").
I bought a m15 R3. It's been great. Dells software is buggy and garbage but the hardware with some tweaking is great. Undervolt the CPU at - 100 and cache at - 50. I did get + 150 on gpu over clock and 250 on memory. Super smooth game play

Actually, what do I get if I order a second 1TB hard drive, on RAID 0? Do I get one 1TB drive on C: and one 1TB drive on D: ? Or do I get 2TB on C: ? There are many options on the dell online shop.
I agree 100% about the disappointing lack of 2k options, my 1440p screen Alienware 17R4 has been a gamechanger! Is going for the 4k option and then setting the resolution ingame to 1440p the best compromise for now for the newer models?
Okay here is another post: on this laptop, the Alienware M17 R3, it has a half-height msata SSD slot. Is the key on the card, a "B" or "M" keyed card. The key is the part of the ssd msata card that plugs into the laptop to upgrade it. I believe the M has one separator in the key....and the B has two separators. I would like to get this right so it fits and I don't have to return the mini ssd.
Really? I got one of these and am having some really freaking weird fan issues. No matter how much I clean the fans they continue to make a periodic grinding sound which in turn affects my temps by half. Not sure what they were thinking by making the damn thing so thin.

Why they made fire resistant CPU fan: Because Intel is stuck in 14 nm and they made a 8 core CPU which can pull more wattage than graphics card and will try to reach over 5 GHz boost clock.
I have both and the XPS 17 inch display doesn't have the refresh are for gaming, however.. it would have been nice to have an option to choose which panel at this point, i bought mine from their outlet store, happens to be a brand new, your typical open-box item, i could not be happier, i have linux, windows everything in one!
What about the discolouration on the white model that happened on the R2? It is the extra layer of clear coat working to prevent that on the R3 this year? I would like to see some long-term review.

Love my alienware x51 r2 I got for free it was only used for 3 years then put in storage becouse the ram went bad but its going great now

same issue I had with my previous Alienware laptop. It got so hot it fried the motherboard lol.

This thing is way more powerful than the Razer. I almost bought the 17 pro as well but went with the i9 2080 super m17 r3 and man this thing is a beast! If you want to get the best performance for the price, look no further.
Lisa, when are you going to do the XPS 17? You're the only reviewer whose opinion on cooling I actually trust. (The other reviewers discuss laptop thermals *WITHIN* the chassis but not the more relevant metric of the thermals: "finger comfort").

I bought a m15 R3. It's been great. Dells software is buggy and garbage but the hardware with some tweaking is great. Undervolt the CPU at - 100 and cache at - 50. I did get + 150 on gpu over clock and 250 on memory. Super smooth game play

Actually, what do I get if I order a second 1TB hard drive, on RAID 0? Do I get one 1TB drive on C: and one 1TB drive on D: ? Or do I get 2TB on C: ? There are many options on the dell online shop.

I agree 100% about the disappointing lack of 2k options, my 1440p screen Alienware 17R4 has been a gamechanger! Is going for the 4k option and then setting the resolution ingame to 1440p the best compromise for now for the newer models?
Okay here is another post: on this laptop, the Alienware M17 R3, it has a half-height msata SSD slot. Is the key on the card, a "B" or "M" keyed card. The key is the part of the ssd msata card that plugs into the laptop to upgrade it. I believe the M has one separator in the key....and the B has two separators. I would like to get this right so it fits and I don't have to return the mini ssd.
Really? I got one of these and am having some really freaking weird fan issues. No matter how much I clean the fans they continue to make a periodic grinding sound which in turn affects my temps by half. Not sure what they were thinking by making the damn thing so thin.

Why they made fire resistant CPU fan: Because Intel is stuck in 14 nm and they made a 8 core CPU which can pull more wattage than graphics card and will try to reach over 5 GHz boost clock.

I have both and the XPS 17 inch display doesn't have the refresh are for gaming, however.. it would have been nice to have an option to choose which panel at this point, i bought mine from their outlet store, happens to be a brand new, your typical open-box item, i could not be happier, i have linux, windows everything in one!
What about the discolouration on the white model that happened on the R2? It is the extra layer of clear coat working to prevent that on the R3 this year? I would like to see some long-term review.
