I did it myself years ago on my 3.6 Sovereign, I used high gloss clear coat and hand sanded between coats, I did hang the ski slope, when spraying the coats on, then use a Dremel with polish wheels.
It's a big improvement and you've put a bit of yourself into the car. You probably wouldn't find a perfect one from a breakers anyway, they all seem to go tatty there eventually.
Its a beautiful car !!! ... I wonder if the varnish was in a spray can it may have settled better ??? ... It's the Series 3 i love so much ... esp the V12 !!!! ... But the XJ40 is great all the same !!!
