  • Hi all. It was a nice day the other day, so I decided to film a video for you all on how to start the very popular Lister D Type. This is the same D Type that I was restoring/repainting(196040 26DH). I'm sorry to say that there are no more videos on it's restoration because my laptop bit the dust and all my videos were on it at the time!
    This D Type is a 26DH spec supplied to Liner Concrete in Derbyshire on September 3rd, 1945. If you want to see the full history of this engine, then check out my profile(timothygstokes) on the stationary engine forum. A link is in my contact details on my channel page.

    I purchased one of these 18 years ago from a classic car show at weston park. I paid £60 and got it loaded into the back of my 3 month old company golf GTI !!! Yep, it leaked!!! It ran very well but was in original unrestored condition. I got it home, my wife just looked confused and blank and uttered one word... "why?" we never mentioned it again! I ran it regularly for 8 months or so then decided to restore it. Head and water chamber, tank etc came off then I started working for myself and it sat there for a good 2 years. I then stored it at a friends house who had more workshop room than I and there it has been ever since. Last month he said he needed the space to extend so the old Lister D is coming home and I look forward to being re united with it again and completing the restoration. The only part here at the moment is the ID plate. As an old man now of 48 and semi retired I fully intend to put my all into the restoration. Should anyone (who has sod all else to do or as my wife says "is as sad as me") wishes to to read a blog and see pics/videos please let me know. Due to start July time. And to all who have a stationary engine, you are not weird... you are just misunderstood

    Brings back many memories of hours stood next to one of these which was connected to a turnip chopper,

    I've had about 5 Listers, little one cylinders, from 5 to 7 hp, and one BIG two cylinder with 10 hp. The newer ones have a lever on the top of the cylinder to allow easier starting, it releases compression until the engine is spinning good, then you close it and the engine fires instantly. IMHO, one of the best built products I've ever owned

    I would love one of these, been looking, ps looks like you learnt the hard way with your thumb position judging by the hand strap! :p

      Depending on your location, Ebay would be a good place to start looking for one. The average value for one that is the same specification as mine is around £80.00 (GBP). The brace on my left hand is due to a motorbike accident I had not long before the recording of the video. I fractured the cup of the joint between my thumb and my hand.

      Hi Michael, the oil in the can is the same oil that I use in the engine's oil sump; Comma classics' SAE30.

    • @Erik_Blomgren
      @Erik_Blomgren 7 років тому

      well, my grandpa bought it from an old gravel pit where it had workred in many years, but now it was broken. one of the tappets had broke due lack of oil. we looked a long time for a new one and found one at a scrap yard two years ago. the engine itself was filled with sand and old oil but all original parts was still there, so we took down the whole engine and cleaned it, oiled it up and put it together again. it has both ignition and compression and we got it to run 30-40 seconds but then it stops... what fule do you use?
      sorry for spelling mistakes, im not from England.

      Sila If you have eBay in Kenya, try starting your search there. I paid £80 GBP for my lister d type, which seems to be the average price over here for one of its age. Earlier ones tend to fetch more money, so I'd avoid early ones if you're just starting out (unless you can get it for reasonable cost in reasonable condition)
