We're onto the (supposedly) unlucky number in my series! This is the full theme from the 1986 series "The Trial of a Time Lord" (out on DVD at the end of the month!). However, although it is the full theme, it is not the original. As you will find out next week the theme actually used in the programme has a slightly different bassline and melody effects. But for now, enjoy!
(Oh, and if you were wondering whether I was going to upload the themes from "The Five Doctors", watch this space!)
Such an outrage that Colin was fired by the BBC when it was not his fault that the reviews of Doctor Who were not that good.
Well at least he had done audios for Big Finish, and also returned to screens in The Five(ish) Doctors.
it was the writer that should have been fired, i think colin did a perfect job
Agreed. He is the most underrated Doctor if you ask me.
Quite often, the ratings of a show boil down more on what the prior season was like than the current season. The fact of the matter was that Colin Baker came fresh on the heels of Peter Davison, who was a fine Doctor, but often appeared in some of the absolute worst Doctor Who stories of all time.
most of his stories were great
I absoulutly ADORE the whines and trumpets at the Middle Eight!
whats the middle eight again?
simonster -909 I finally found this comment. If you still don't know, It comes right after the o-wee-o. WEEEEEEEEE-OWEO-WE-E-OOOOOOOOOO! WE-WE-WEO-WEWO-WE-OWE-O-WEOOOOOOOOOOOO-WEO!
yea I know by now thx anyway
A friend of mine called it "an asthmatic hamster playing the bagpipes" and now I cannot unsee it.
Trumpets? I think you must be listening to something else.
This theme is unique.
From the soundset, which, unlike other themes, isn't loud and has tons of random sounds (that fit!), this one is low tuned, cleaner and gives the show it's true meaning - exploring space and time without knowing what will happen - diving to the unknown!
This is my favourite theme, for this reason.
You hit the nail on the head, here. Your analysis perfectly encapsulates why I like this one the most.
Personally, I absolutely hate this theme as a doctor who theme, I know it’s good in the areas of which you said but this never catches the original doctor who feel and Is way to far away to even consider, proper doctor who themes are those hard hitting haunting themes in my opinion
@@Blue_Hound_2144 I actually love this because I feel that it recaptures some of the haunting feeling of the original. The Howell theme was brilliant, but it was missing that atmosphere. The main weakness of this version is the lead sound in the middle 8.
That thing at 0:24 ...
Its beautiful, kinda wish more version had it
My absolute favourite. The *flashness* of Howell's disappears in favour of a more outer-space, eerie atmosphere. Just love it.
This fits the 6th doctor mad nature.
Colin Baker was definitely an underrated Doctor.
Love the middle 8. I feels so electronic to just a dr who 80s theme
By far, the creepiest and yet most awesome doctor who theme.
Close second is the Delaware version.
What hell is creepy supposed to mean?
@@beardguy6320, as in scary?
Joseph Chambers I know what the definition of creepy it’s just why did you call it creepy is all.
@@beardguy6320 It's just a bit unsettling in it's off beat and out of key beat and almost vocal parts in some sections.
0:23
This is the reason I love this opening so much. The following melody is so dark and mysterious, perfectly reflecting Six.
I really wish they would re-use this melody again.
Thank you everyone, did i mention i love cats.???
Sixth Doctor lol also you are a faker
So... coming back to Karn anytime soon...?
You already regenerated you mong (jk) also dogs are better (IRL)
no spoodergames 084, cats are cuter

This suit Colin Baker so well. It shows what means to be a mad man with a blue box, time travelling in space and time.
Ain't that all of them? (Especially Matt Smith)
They are but this theme shows that Colin Baker was the most mad-est man.... (I am not english, sorry)
That's about as good as a native speaker would've said it, so your doing good.
Actually... The word "mad-est" doesn't exist, it's either most madder or maddest if i'm not mistaken.
And... according to the comics, in a blue costume...
This theme is so underrated, but I don't care. This theme is one of my top five of doctor who theme songs. This one is not number five in my list.
This is by far the most complex and dark sounding Dr Who theme. I love it. It's a perfect reflection of the entire Trial of a Timelord season. Brilliant!!
Idc what people say this is my favourite dr who theme, Colin was such an underrated doctor
you know what's cool??, has it turns out the new series 8 full theme's "middle 8" part of the theme that was just released, can be synchronized perfectly with Colins middle 8 of the theme tune here! I think we know now where Murray Gold got his inspiration! :)
This, for me, is 6's true theme. Eerie, sinister, unstable, and in the best way.
Unstable? UNSTABLE?!
@@40GamesAG I love this reference!
This isn't the best theme, but at the same time it does kind of fit the whole "Trial of a Timelord" thing. Personally my favourite is the first version of the Derbyshire theme before they added all the extra effects to it, there's something about it that just makes me so excited.
Agreed
get well soon colin baker my favourite doctor 😊👍
This is my favorite theme .
Mine too.
Your appointment for microsuction is January 14th at 2pm. I'm assuming it will be both ears.
@@Clavinovaman youre so fucking funny
@@AbsoluteAbsurd What's life without a laugh... G
All the haters of this theme really need to bugger off! This is perfect for Colin Baker's portrayal of The Doctor. Its supposed to represent The Doctor's unstable regeneration and the madness he was experiencing. Thats why it sounds so out of tune, messed up in certain places, and so strange. It gives you the sense that it is The Doctor, but something is not right here or something has gone wrong. It also sounds like a bunch of cats meowing while flying through the vastness of space, which is great because Colin Baker loved cats, hence the many Cat pins he wore on his multicolored jacket.
LegendKiller1fan agreed sir
You my friend speak wisdom bro I agree with you
LegendKiller1fan To be honest, I didn't even know this theme even _had_ haters! Then again, we're talking about the same fanbase that hates everything...except for _Blink_.
LegendKiller1fan Yeah, this really brings out the darker aspects of the series. I also think it sounds like the Doctor if he was having a metal breakdown, if that even makes sense.
Agreed (and i love cats)
Underrated theme song, it feels kind of eerie in places.
I love the middle 8 at 1:15 and 2:14 it sounds great, this should have been used throughout Colin Bakers era on Who. I preferred this theme to the Howell one.
This really suited the 6th Doctors unstable birth and character it’s loud and brash just like him
loved this theme, remember being a teenager when it was broadcast, I videoed al of Trial and stayed up till the early hours re-watching it. This theme reminds me of smoking out of the childhood toilet window at two in the morning and then going back to the bedroom to watch the next episode. Seem to remember discussing this "one over the eight" with the neighbours siamese cat c.1986 out of the toilet window?!?!?!?!
Trial of a Timelord; Mark of the Rani, Vengeance on Varos, Revelation of the Daleks...
actually, this was only used for trail of a time lord, the other episodes used a slightly modified version of the Davison theme.
My ultimate favourite version of the theme.
I see you seek the Holy Grail
Yes, I do agree
This theme has my favorite middle 8 out of all of them
This theme is nice and serene. I've fallen asleep a few times to it. lol
When i had 10, i was still was afraid of sleeping alone with no lights, so i decided to pick a calm theme, and this was the chosen one lmao
Lmao wut XD
Anyone else feel emotional listening to this? I didn't even grow up watching the classic series.
Every one is talking about haters, but like I'm just vibing.
This is my favourite theme!!!!!!!!!
This theme gave Doctor Who that spooky feel about it.
I love how Murray Gold incorporated the 1986 middle (1:15) into the series 8 theme :)
WHOFAN96 He didn't, they just sound quite similar.
I kinda feel bad for the 6th Doctor he wasnt really that bad in my opinion but he gets all this backlash.
I agree, it's not Colin's fault he was good, it's just that the writers were doing poorly (Strangling Peri in the episode just after a 4-part story about saving her? Seriously?) But 6 had some good stories: Attack of the Cybermen, Vengeance on Varos, Mindwarp, hell, even The Ultimate Foe had an interesting concept riding on it (even though it didn't come out too well). It's just a shame that we haven't invented time travel, then someone could go back and help give the 6th Doctor the tenure he deserved!
Exactly, It wasn't Colin's fault, it really was the quality of the scripts he had to work with, thankfully we can see Colin's full potential in his Big Finish Audios ^_^ (I actually got to meet him a few days ago, he was wonderful! :D)
The sixth Doctor is my favorite, but I much prefer him in the Big Finish audios. He works better with a companion who stands up to him, Peri is too submissive for Colin's Doctor. The clothes Colin was forced to wear don't help.
People just judge a person on their stories, not their acting
He is my favourite classic doctor
Always loved the Trial Of A Timelord theme from the first time i heard it.Still going strong thanks to BF audios.
My favourite bit is at 0:24 until 0:37. Perfect
Dillon the Goth same
My favourite bit is the note it hits directly after
the part beginning at 2:35 is like that part but so much better honestly
Sega Mega Drive Doctor Who
This Theme is just very Heroic and Dark as the same time and I'm actually curious where Colin’s Doctor would have gone after Trial of a timelord
*Carrot Juice, Carrot Juice, Carrot Juice*
*THIS THEME PLAYS!*
So underrated
indeed. This is a great theme. Such a shame.
Fricking agreed
My favorite version of the theme tune.
Such a shame Robert Holmes died in the making of this he would have written a better ending
well I heard it would have ended on a cliffhanger had robert holmes survived to write it, not the best move since the show was in big danger of being cancelled at the time.
But shows that end on cliffhangers typically are renewed.
Matt Smith not always, i've seen a few shows that have been cancelled after ending on cliffhangers.
Carrot juice.
The Doctor and the Valeyard falling into the matrix together whilst fighting, never to be seen again with a voice over by the Inquisitor pondering if the Doctor will survive or not is a terrible ending in my opinion.
Gotta love all the Dr Who themes. Honestly, I can't think of a single theme I don't like.
Cough cough Delaware Cough Cough
@@caleb7551 *Cough cough* is great *cough cough*
@@eatingthesnowinicecapzone I've changed my mind since I wrote that comment, I agree with you
Honestly one of my favourites. The best versions have that epic bassline louder during the middle 8
I love all the themes and the way they do change as the Doctor does.
Call me crazy, but this might be my favorite version of the theme.
just love when it gets to 0:23
Definitely the most underrated rendition of the theme IMO.
I think this is my favorite version of the theme next to the TV Movie version, The Matt Smith (Series 5) version, and the Peter Capaldi version
One of the best versions
Those 25 people that disliked this song are the poor saps stuck in the Timelash XD
This theme is heavily underrated!
I love the 6th Doctor and the Trial of a Timelord, but have never been able to wrap my head round this version of the theme.
Honestly I still adore this version
This is awesome! I love it. It sounds like synthwave in 75% speed.
Well, it does use synth... so its 'synthwave' regardless
Colin Baker is my all time favorite incarnation of the Doctor.
and mine!
Although I can clearly remember watching Trail of a Timelord and being terrified of the Verviods I can hardly remember this theme whatsoever. Although it does seem to have a very eerie quality to it that Howell's theme didn't have and as it's in a different key it all adds to the atmosphere of this variation.
I've probably said this here before but, to me, this sounded like the most logical progression for an update of the theme.
So his name is the doctor and he is a mad man with a blue box
Love this version of the theme. The thumping bass and the eerie voices are so strange and distinct from the previous versions and yet absolutely in keeping with the sense of foreboding and mystery that the Derbyshire version was designed to encapsulate.
This is so eighties.
Agreed
+Jack of Blades Gaming 1980, 1986, and 1987 themes are simply the best... but I hope they don't screw up the next one. Also, I love the Middle 8 at 2:14
This really suited the 6th doctors strange unhinged manner
Honestly I really like this theme. One of my favourites.
Love this theme!!!!
Best theme of Doctor Who Everrrrrrrrr
I LOVE the middle 8 in this theme. Probably my favourite middle 8
Wow so. Space like!!
I LOVE THIS THEME IT IS CATCHY I ALSO LIKE THE 1987 THEME BOTH ARE SO MODERN INTERPTATION OF THE THEME
This theme is weird compared to the other ones, but that's okay since Colin Baker was a weird guy.
Niceguy3210 Pretty much,yeah.
:)
This theme was cool in my opinion
RetroGuy3210, can we at least agree Colin was better then doctors 1, 5, and 8.
Colin Baker and Tom Baker were my favorite incarnations of the Doctor. Both were brilliant.
I'm sure that most of you won't agree with me, but i think 6 is better than 10, in fact i hate 10, Colin was way better
This theme for some reason just feels so classic and I LOVE IT. The middle 8 is definitely the best I've heard in a Doctor Who theme.
Very atmospheric
This theme is supposed to be epic not some kind of love song for the french
@@YoungEngineer-ew9en no its not
The original was intentionally very haunting, almost scary
It was never intended to be an exciting adventure series kind of theme
It was very much a last minute request for Dominic Glynn to redo the Who theme. Had Baker not been sacked we may have been able to enjoy this version for several years but they were so keen to make S24 a break with the past so redid it again. Does anyone know what keyboards were used on this?
I always really liked this one... especially the way it ends.
Trivia: this 1980s theme was used for the “Martians Invade the Price is Right” Showcase on The Price is Right back in 1986.
I always did like this version. Suited Colin Baker more than the Peter Howell arrangement.
To be honest I like the theme... there’s just something about it that I can’t put my finger on
I rather like this theme, honestly one of my favourites of the series, it has it's own nature to it, and i love the howling type of effect at the end
This takes me back to a simpler time :) Being in the single digits and getting to grips with a new school. 87 will always be MY theme though. The one I remember watching the most before the lure of climbing trees, riding bikes and general outdoors kept me away from the TV most days!
Parts of this sound like they were inspired by Jon Pertwee’s “Who is the Doctor?”
This is in my top three DW themes
So love the bass in this.
I love it! This is a good intro for the 6th Doctor era
Dull, flat and lifeless. I love it!
I love the very end!
2:34-2:50
The best part of it is how it has a loop before the sonic boom. I like how the boom it's self sin't actually that loud comapred with the rest of the theme, unlike the Howell/McCulloch themes.
I’m probably in the minority but I love the sixth doctor. His brash and kinda douche personally to me at least sets him apart from all the doctors. He’s kinda mean but he shows he can be kind. But I understand why people don’t like him but I do lol
He's a brilliant doctor, no doubt about it. 'Douche' doesn't sit quite right though - it would be a far more fitting description of Tennant or Capaldi's doctors. Especially Tennant. Complete douche in fact!
To St oh yeah I forgot about that, I guess a better word or way to describe him is a brash sort of fellow
Well I detect a hint of sarcasm (fair enough as I guess I was being a bit of a douche myself), but a better description nonetheless!
Way better than the trash "acting" they have now. Colin had depth.
This is my favourite version of the Doctor Who theme, without a doubt. The reason being that it was during the original transmission of 'The Trial of a Timelord' that I became hooked on the programme at the tender age of 5! Even hearing this version of the theme now brings back memories of finding this music very sinister and spooky!
Much better than the first New Wave theme.
+JimB 1985 New wave? What's that?
One of my all time favourite iterations of the theme! :)
This is the best music that ive ever heard its just that space fill to it
I LIKE ALL DOCTORS FROM DOCTOR WHO!
Most underrated theme ever!
man this brings back childhood memories
this theme was used the year the nes came to europe
brick brainiac Your profile pic really fits in with the video...
i know
brick brainiac Actually, never mind.
oops.
Nice theme.
@Iainofthemeteor Yes, because the original mix used on the TV was made in about a week by Dominic Glynn (who wasn't really very pleased with it to begin with), but for this "album" version he had much longer to refine it and add extra effects.
I like this theme, it has that mysterious feel to it.
1:15 is one of my favorite DW middle 8's
i get an eargasm just listening to this. thats a good thing by the way
Love it!
