I know this arrangement offends a lot of fan's sensibilities, but I love it; it was entirely fitting for the movie, a bold, triumphant march. It says "Doctor Who is BACK". Bit premature, obviously, but it's still oddly thrilling.
I think this actually has to be my favorite Doctor Who theme because of the sheer orchestral epicness. The brass just... and the strings... and everything...just wow.
Beautifull theme. If they ever do a multi-Doctor TV special and McGann returns for it then I want this music to play on his very first shot. Here is how I imagine that sequence: 0:39 - Other Doctors look suprised as another TARDIS appears in the sky and descends down. 0:52 - The TARDIS' doors open and McGann walks out.
Stefano Pavone First the music plays, another TARDIS appears in the sky and descends down while this theme plays, fangirls freak out as they recognize the tune and then he walks out of the ship and delivers the line.
Ha, similar to my imagining. Only the doctor, played by me of course, is roughed up by the enemy and campanion(a) captured is fading in the darkness then a light appears, she sees a tarsus is landing. The doors open and a pair of feet stride out. From the doctor’s POV, 8 appears from the shadows, looks down and says “you look like you need some help” The Doctor looks shocked and it goes to the titles....
timrob12 here’s how I see it: Dalek ship prepares to open fire on Earth. The drums at the start are playing. Something happens, the bridge is a whirlwind of activity and they fire another round, as the choir fades in. You see the round hit something, directly in front of them. The TARDIS materializes as the brass announces its arrival. Hologram of Doctor appears, scowling: “Not. So. Fast.” Cue theme.
Really?! This part - called the Middle Eight, would not serve on it's own as the Doctor Who theme, whereas the rest of the theme with this part cut out can ... Oh, well, each to their own. I find this part a nice contrast, but not the main game of the theme.
That intro at 0:33 is so brilliantly epic I'm mad that it hasn't been used again. Imagine, new season, The Doctor appears at the most catastrophic of times, he smiles, everyone looks at him, they ask desperately: "Who are you?" "Oh, nobody really, just *The Doctor*" [0:33 sounds loudly as fuck, they all look confused, the camera zooms out, giving us an epic view of The Doctor, the TARDIS, and everyone else; opening credits begin].
Only problem is that it's far too short. If somebody can re-arrange it to play in the same sequence and cut out some of the overly long buildup, that'd be great.
Love this version and 7th doctor version. Maybe I'm biased but McCoy is my doctor and mcgann is my over. Long time to wait in between the series and this film Good times
Yeah. I heard that it was only used in one episode that lasted as long as a movie??? PR is that just a rumour.... Idk Cuz I grew up with matt smish as my doctor... But David was the first one I saw. I can't get over matt leaving :(
Me neither. I was very sad when David left. How I got started watching Doctor Who, was from UA-cam. I heard about it a lot on videos, and I decided to check it out. I found it on Netflix. When I saw the first episode, I was hooked!
It was used in the 8th doctors TV movie titled "doctor who" and made by 20th venturer fox. It wasn't received very well so it was thought the 8th would never come back to the screen. Then Moffat did a little magic called "the night of the doctor" and it gave us 2 appearances of the 8th doctor and cannonised the radio adventures, giving the 8th a proper tenure. Also, The movie was meant to kick start a new series, but it didn't work
Seriously BBC, crack down some more on this opening will you? Forgetting that you only got back the lost episodes due to bootlegs? Besides this intro always had a huge "Star Trek Next Generation! US TOOOOO!" feel to it :P.
@@biggiecheese253 He's talking about the (for a lack of a better term since I believe most of the lost episodes predated VHS or Betamax) "videotapes" many people had recorded of the "lost" episodes. I also love how the 4-beat bass line is emphasized in this version a bit more than in the other ones. Its also fitting because the Master is the villain of the movie. Even though this was created before the never ending drums in the Masters head was established, I still think its fitting.
Oh, he totally did. Note how I said Colin was *forced* to act his way through some of the scripts he was given. (Colin redeems 6 through the Big Finish audio dramas, though. If you're into listening to them, not everyone is, of course.) Though, I'd also go so far as to say both Colin AND Sylvester got the short end of the stick from the beeb. Didn't really get a fair shake to flesh out their Doctors on screen.
I adore this theme. I was distraught as a kid when they cancelled Dr Who and always loved the middle eighth of the theme, so when it came back, the logo smashed into the screen, and the middle eighth triumphantly blasted out I lost my shit completely.
The Ninth Doctor is my favorite Doctor and it's nice to see someone else appreciate what he brought to the role. However I do feel the need to point out that Eccleston's best episodes (IMO) "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" were written by Moffat.
Actually, the BBC had total control and final say over everything in the production. I know you posted your comment a YEAR ago, but the reply was warranted.
"It was on the planet Skaro that my old enemy the Master was finally put on trial. They say he listened calmly as his list of evil crimes was read, and sentence passed. @HieiYYH2 actually, i think Eccelsten said he didn't want to return as nine for anything, so i'd say the Four Doctors would be more of Peter Davison, Paul McGann, David Tennant, and Matt Smith, for remember, Davison did star alongside Tennant in the mini episode 'Time Crash' in 2007.
theres nothing wrong with sylvesters series. every doctor had bad episodes.the 7th doctor had some amazing stories and he is the bones to the modern series
But if they did that, then it would be no different to every other time the daleks try to kill the doc. This way, the master is able to infiltrate the TARDIS and make his escape into the console, leading to him being able to screw everything up and kill the doctor. The daleks faked his 'execution' to allow him to turn into that snake thingy so he could then carry out the plot.
8th Doctor RULES. He needs to make an appearance with Eccelsten, Tenant and Smith for a 4 Doctor Special like the old "The Five Doctors" Special from back in the day
Well, Moffat said he's been lying his arse off about the 50th since it started, so perhaps we'll actually see Eccleston return, even if it is a small appearance. There's also been hints that McGann may return as well, in a prequel.
I've been watching "Real Time" if that counts for anything. And yes, i agree both Colin and Sylvester got bad treatment from Grade and redeem themselves in Big Finish (BIG FINISH SAVES THE DAY) And they were unbelievably lucky to get Tom Baker to play The Doctor again
Totally does. "Real Time" is definitely not my favorite of the BIg Finish stuff, but it's definitely not at all bad. Evelyn Smythe is (humorously, since she's Big Finish-exclusive) one of the 6th's best companions, really. An excellent foil for him in all the plays she's in. Yeah, it is good of them to have gotten Tom, too. I'm really looking forward to their 50th special this year, it'll have 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and if rumor has it true, a recast 1, 2, 3. That's a lot of Doctors. :D
I actually like this rendition of the theme quite a bit. The best part for me is how it has the middle eight bit in front of the main melody. That really built it up.
And maybe he's lying about the fact he's lying. Which would mean he's not lying in the end. He's probably been saying the truth then realized he said too much so pretended to be lying.
I do like this theme, but thank GOD that this wasn't the pilot to a new Doctor Who Show. Oh, sure, we would have been CONTENT to have Doctor Who back on the air, but it wouldn't have been Doctor Who. Slowly, we would have all died inside. Instead, we have the new series, and while it's not QUITE the same, it's much closer than anything based off of the 1996 TV movie would have come. Love the theme. Thank the Lord it didn't become a show opener. (From 1996 to 2005, I wished it HAD become a show opener.... then the new series came along and... well... yeah.)

To my knowledge, this is how the theme appeared on the 1996 soundtrack CD release, but I think there were different versions recorded (opening, closing, full) all in different keys.
Unfortunately, 9 has refused to return for the 50th; there are rumours going around that John Hurt will replace him. Although why John Hurt in particular would fit the bill, who knows? I mean, it's not as though Hurt and Ecclestone are particularly similar. (No offence intended toward either actor)
