InDirectDiana I was actually going to say she isn't assertive enough: I don't have a great Dane, but I'd never let a dog talk back to me, especially one that could do damage! My dog only talked back to me once when I took her food (didn't hurt her, just a tap touch to let her know I had the right to do so if I thought it appropriate…I'm of the firm belief that you never have to hurt an animal if you are consistent). Now she knows if someone takes her bowl a) they have a right to, and b) It's coming back with cheese or duck or something else tasty! I didn't want her to ever get the idea she could growl at a human and get away with it. I see this dog getting the idea he's bigger than his human and that idea in that big head scares the crap out of me.

The first time I ever met a Great Dane, my friend said sit here at his used car dealership..He called out her name and I heard flop, flop, flop, flop. The next thing I knew the dogs face was at my face level. I was my former male self and a tall 6 ft 1 inch. I thought OMG, what now. The lazy eyes this massive dog ready to pounce. What really happened next shocked me. I got the biggest lick from my chin to the top of my head. I was covered in dog love, my head went backwards and hit the wall behind me!! I remember wiping my hand on my face and my friend laughing. Oh this is the Guard Dog? He said yep, no one comes to the door when I am not here. Gee I wonder why. Big Softy. Amazing. I think I am still over 25 years later and female now wiping my face off from that big lick.
