You are a JOY to watch! I always felt so awkward using watercolor pencils even after watching other UA-cam artists, but something about your calming explanation and your beautiful art makes me want to dive right back into this media! ❤️

Glad to see you back! I found this really enjoyable. I love the idea of starting the painting in the field then finishing it once you return home. I have just always used watercolor pencils when I don't want to drag everything out and have a short period of time, like waiting in the doctor's office. I have never used my watercolor brushes with them but rather water brushes, since it requires no water container. Derwent makes a nice roll that has enough space for three water brushes, a spritzer, small sharpener, and 24 pencils. This travels with me everywhere in my tote. Look forward to more ideas like these!

I first discovered you through your book "Acrylics for the absolute beginner" -I got it even though I have been painting with acrylics for years, and it opened a gate to a new world for me. You have a magical way of teaching. You make things seem so simple, I always think when reading you "oh, yes, so that's how to do that! That doesn't seem too hard!" and then suddenly I am improving! Today I find that you are on youtube too. What a blessing! Thank you. Be always well.

It was good to see such a talented artist using this medium. I love watercolor pencils and use them in most of my work. Since I usually do life drawings from models, it’s really useful to have something that allows for speed. If you haven’t tried them, I would suggest that you try using a water brush with this type of color pencil. Having the water feed in the handle is quite helpful, but another good thing is how stiff but flexible the bristles are. Sometimes the pigment seems to require a stiffer brush than a regular brush and the water brushes fulfill this, while keeping a good point.

Neuroscience research shows that handwriting study notes improves memory recall more than typing your notes in class. I like your point that you will remember so much more when you sketch what you see on location instead of (just) pressing a button. As a watercolorist, I tried to create pocket kits with some success, but it was still a balancing act, sitting on a rock above a river etc. Sketching is also something I enjoy, but I do crave color. I've just ordered some Inktense watercolor pencils after re-finding a small box of fantasia watercolor pencils I'd barely tried out years ago. That and a water pen a friend gave me 2 weeks ago. Thanks for your inspiration in this video.

What a treat to see a watercolor pencil demo. I already have some nice w/c pencils so, hey, you've inspired me! Have you ever rubbed your pencils with sandpaper over some wet paper for granulating results? I love that effect and use it for shading or for instance, the skin of a lemon. Shirley Trevana used that technique.

Thank you for this tutorial using watercolor pencils. I learned some things that I can't wait to try. Several years ago I illustrated a children's book for my cousin, and I chose watercolor pencils, not knowing the first thing about watercolors, much less the pencils. Things turned out fine, but I'm glad for any instruction I can get to use in future endeavors.

I would love to see those books of sketches you created in a few video's dedicated to them. What I did see was inspiring and I want to do my own. Had you thought about a short video on drawing simple figures such as those in this video? Different ages, different poses. Maybe a few dogs with maybe some larger, more detailed 'miniatures' ? I would think it would be relatively quick to produce, but would provide a lot of fun and examples for viewers to fill in all those boring white pieces in their sketchbooks :)

When I first watched your watercolor video, I was so stunned to see your palette - since most of mine are very clean and neat (hardly used). But I really enjoyed your demonstrations. Currently I am following your book Ready to Paint in 30 minutes: Boats & Harbours - on project 13 (out of 36) already. My Daler Rowney's 24 half pan set now has big dents in Cobalt Blue, Fr. Ultramarine, Hooker's Green, Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre pans!
I will definitely try your methods with watercolor pencils. Do you think they work better on hotpressed watercolor paper? Maybe with less pencil mark after being wetted?

Very good instructional! Glad to see a new video from you. I purchased pencils some time ago and have had limited success with them, need to get them out more. My use of them has been limited to repairing a small area or sharpening a detail line. This video has spurred me to using them for a painting. Thanks for sharing.
