Here are RAW files for you to compare for yourself: drive.google.c...
Brother, I love the Pentax K1 camera and have for years. It's a photographer's camera with plenty of useful functions that many other brands lack. Above all, it's tough so I can focus on the pictures and not worry about its death by water or some other encounter with the real world. You can see it's been abused; and is still working fine. The image quality is also amazing, beating many current, more expensive cameras, as evidenced by DxO Mark's sensor rankings and DPReview's image comparison tool. If you're just doing photography, it should still be a top choice. But the video's not particularly good...
So in comes the Panasonic Lumix S1, a full-frame mirrorless camera. I bought and sold the Lumix S1R because the increase in image quality over the Pentax K1 didn't seem worth it. But the S1 with the V-Log upgrade is an excellent hybrid camera and seems the best value choice for photography/ video at the moment. And it's mirrorless with an excellent viewfinder. So, for those few moments of my day when I wasn't staring at a screen, now I can do so again.

I use a variety of mirrorless cameras, but I hold on to my Pentax DSLRs. It's hard to find a better landscape camera than the Pentax K-1, and those Limited lenses... Need I say more? It is, as you say, a photographer's camera in every sense of the word.

Thanks Brian, they really are. Amazing image quality and just so well thought out with innovative features. Great ergonomics. And tough! The Panasonic S1's mode wheel at the back has become stiff after wearing the camera around my neck on the walk. The Pentax K1 on the other hand has been thoroughly abused and just carries on regardless. Excellent build quality.

Mirrorless will totally replace DSLRs only in the minds of those who wants to see it this way. Cheap Canons and Nikons will die out rightfully, as some of them are worse than old point-and-shoot ones. But DSLRs have their niche and they are here to stay.

    • @BJEPhoto

Yes, agreed. Pentax could do well with dSLRs incorporating new mirrorless technology. There are certainly some things that mirrorless won't be able to replace. Low power usage for example.

I currently use a Pentax K-70. kind of an update from the Pentax K-7. I know many have told me to use Lightroom to 'edit' my photos, but to be really honest, I don't really want more features than what I find in Pentax' Digital Camera Utility (Silkypix) as it feels a little more "old-school" (as it has many of the same settings I find on the camera). I feel it promotes the idea of trying to get the picture right on the first attempt.
I mostly enjoy nature photography and I really like Pentax' rendering of colors for that scenario... but nonetheless, I really appreciate videos like these that show different image tones/colors from different brands. I think they all look pretty good! I enjoy the variety. Kind of like different films in the film era.

@@Clodrock I think of the K1's video as just something you would use as a backup in case your smartphone broke down. I don't think Pentax even put much effort into video and just put it there because it seems unthinkable for any camera to not have video nowadays.
The K1 is meant to be a stills camera and excels at that. I've been using it for about two years now. I do mostly night photography, astrophotography and landscapes and it is perfect for that. I occasionally do some bird photography and found the autofocus surprisingly good despite what the internet says about it. There are of course cameras that are much better at autofocus on fast moving subjects and if that is your main subject then the K1 is probably not the best choice but it is by no means a bad choice even for that.

When you look through the viewfinder directly at a powerful light source (mainly the Sun), you can see that are difficult to see, and even disappear (due to the internal reflections of light in the pentaprism I imagine), the green light diodes of exposure information (speed, aperture, EV, ISO, etc.)
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Is it possible to adjust the power of the viewfinder's light diodes? Or how?

I've found that my Panasonic cameras have always exibited a slight magenta cast compared to my Canon and Nikon bodies (regardless of lenses used). This was easy enough to adjust for jpegs or Raw files in editing software such as Silkypix, but was almost impossible to set perfect in-camera at time of shooting. Whereas the Nikons such D800/810/850 always provide superb colour straight out of the camera, using Tiff or Jpegs.

I see so many videos of people comparing video quality of cameras whether dslr or mirrorless and complaining about some of the short comings. I have yet to see a single video of a comparison about cameras designed specifically for video and complaining about it's still photo short comings. Stop comparing and or complaining about video quality of a camera that's specific design was for "still" image capture and purchase a video specific camera. I am not directing this to you the producer, just in general.

Professional work increasingly requires both and having a single camera model that can shoot stills and video competently is desirable. Pentax is more of a purely photographers' camera because it's video is pretty much useless for professional requirements. Worth pointing that out to people who hear how good the photographs are and just assume the video will be acceptable too.

The S1R's video is much better by far. The S1R will output higher resolution images by quite a big margin and the sensor shift allows for a bit of movement, unlike the K1. That said, the K1's pixel shift looks excellent. Hard to compare because of the resolution differences. The K1 has more photographer-centric features like astrotracer, GPS, more moveable screen etc. But the S1R is more customisable. I'd choose the K1 probably unless I was doing more video. @@BJEPhoto Welcome. I really haven't found that much issue with the autofocus for my wildlife/birding continuous AF shots.
I understand there is a concern coming from forums about the contrast-detect AF but I am able to work around the system. With the older smaller models like the GF7 and GM5 and with the correct shutter-speed, my AF-C bird shots shots are 100% in focus. WIth the G9, the updated DFD just makes shooting with AF-C much more reliable. So with shutter priority, depending on light levels, the correct shutter speed will give the best AF-C performance and with aperture priority, AF/AE lock gives the user total control. It won't be as flexible as the shutter priority mode but when the subject is locked in the AF/AE box, focus will be perfect. By the way, I got the tips/workaround from experienced bird photographers using Panasonic and Olympus systems.
I tried to replicate the AF issues in the forums and was only able to do so in full auto and programme modes, which I don't use at all. Also, I find that some of the AF concerns are more confined with some lenses, like the 14-140mm, rather than the body.

@@BJEPhoto Glad to hear it. I remember stumbling across the feature on my gx85 and wondering who the heck would use it, nice that it came in useful.
I actually have a question. On my old Nikon slr, I could use af-l, and it would stop focusing while the button was held. On the gx85 and lx10, setting it to af-l would work the same as af-on, so it would do a one-shot focus, then hold. I wanted to use the button to avoid refocusing. Has this bug been fixed on the S1?

      @BJEPhoto  3 роки тому

@@1fareast14 How are you finding the Gx85? I've heard good things about it.
Sure, it could be a customisation setting. In AF-C on the settings menu, there's an option for AF/AE Lock Hold. I've switched that off otherwise it acts like a toggle on/off. I've switched Shutter AF and Quick AF on. I've remapped the AF-On button to AF-L. The S1 then focusses continually except and only while the AF-ON (remapped to AF-L) is pressed.
That said the autofocus on the S1 isn't particularly good and sometimes even the K1's AF seems faster and more reliable. This is with the Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f2.8 lens. So I tend to focus manually (the S1's viewfinder and zoomed-in view is lovely for that) or use single-point AF-S with the AF-On button and the Shutter AF disabled. Hopefully firmware updates will mean that we'll be able to rely on AF-C more often; and bear in mind that I'm still getting used to the camera, too.

      @@BJEPhoto Re: Gx85
I like it, especially for how cheap it is.
It's small enough to fit it a in a tiny camera bag, along with 1.8 primes. Since I mostly do street, social, and concert photos, size matters.
The stabilization system is good enough that the camera is just acceptable in low light. I like showing motion blur and shoot at 1/20th regularly. Those who want more should go ff or mf. iso 3200 acceptable mechanical, 2000 with eshutter.
Aside from the crop, video quality is strong. No record limit on my us model. Need to do a minor trick with an html app spoof to unlock the cinelike d profile.
Face detection is mostly good. However it will raise the exposure. So if a face flickers in and out of detection, exposure will pump.
Built in flash works well enough for impromptu group shots, using red eye mode. In camera raw processor has saved me when needing to deliver images quickly. Surprisingly durable. My first few months of ownership were careless, and it took some wicked drops. After popping in a plastic clip, it's good. Once the evf went screwy, but have not reproduced it since.
      Screen viewing angles are good.
The button layout is not perfect for one handed use. Too many controls require a heavy stretch down with the thumb with eye in finder. Touch and drag af works ok with two hands. The grip is also mediocre, though nowhere near as bad as the a6xxx series. There is a strap lug that dug into the base of my index finger till I adjusted. My back dial is now only reliably turns in one direction, a click to the left registers to the right if I press too hard. The evf has a rainbow tearing effect noticeable when moving the eye and on fast pans.
There is no way to focus stopped down without switching to manual mode. This is an issue, because my 25mm 1.7 has focus shift, which can soften the image from f2.2 to f4. Eshutter appears to add 2/3 stops of noise.
The camera is dense, feels like it has something very heavy inside it near the tripod mount. This coupled with the small grip can make it a bit fatiguing to hold. By comparison, my Em1 is heavier, but the weight is more evenly distributed.
As with all pannys, no sync is support for Oly lenses (and vice versa for dual is on oly). I have no need for anything with it, but it still bothers me that the mft system is not perfectly interoperable.
Overall, my biggest complaint about the gx85 is that there is no upgrade to it.
a6000 feels like garbage and has angled shutter button, hard to press wiht thumb at low angle. Same with a7c, no front dial for no reason.
Gx8 has worse ibis, and I dislike flip screens. gx9 has a worse grip and no major technical advancement.
Fuji x-pro2 has an ovf that I love, but screen does not tilt. x-pro3 cut an ovf magnification and has an insulting hidden screen.
It's a shame that the rangefinder style is either done cheaply or as impractical luxury.

@@1fareast14 Great review of the GX85 thanks! I've had a look and it's slightly altered for different markets. You've obviously really got to grips with yours such that it's become an extension of your eye. That's always best. Smaller cameras that you can carry everywhere are superb tools.
It seems likely that phone cameras will continue to improve, especially bolstered by computational imaging advances, so a smartphone will become an increasingly obvious choice for casual photo/videography. Quite a lot of this review was shot with the Redmi K20 Pro handheld and ungraded. Their parent company, Xiaomi, just partnered with BlinkAI for better low-light performance, and OmniVision has a good-looking new sensor. Even the shallow depth of field effect is getting better too.
Where does that leave photography? I think it will incresingly become about the feel and joy of using a camera - both to learn how to See and to enjoy the flow of creativity. That's partly why I like the Pentax and using some vintage primes like the 77mm limited. Ergonomics is part of it, so is choosing the 'right' gear for you. It's true that it's important to focus on the subject and results, f8 and be there, but there's a mindfulness in the act of creation that is its own reward.

@@BJEPhoto I'm about 95 percent photography and 5 percent video and it's almost entirely landscape, architecture, and street. Video's never been a big deal to me and I think the video files I get from the K-5 are just fine, though the 4gb limit is a major problem. I just set the aperture to F8, focus on something 3 meters away, and shoot. The thing is, I'd actually like to do a lot more videography than I do now but again, that 4gb limit on my K-5 is a killer and only gives me a few minutes of 1080p video before cutting off. I've really had my eye on the S1 (and Canon's R6) for a while now because it just seems like the perfect camera in every way and 24mp is, IMHO, the perfect compromise of IQ to file size, especially for someone like me who doesn't regularly print poster size. From your video, the S1 files have that really weird "otherworldly" green like I've seen in the video files from Olympus M4/3 cameras and I don't like it one bit. It's garish and fake looking. In fact, the whole image had a cold, greenish cast to it (white balance issue?) and I much prefer a warmer image in most cases (though not nearly as warm as Nikon, they go too far the other way). Pentax just nails those greens better than probably any other camera manufacturer and the RAW files I get from my Pentax are pretty much the most accurate I've ever seen, even if not quite as pleasing to the eye as Canon's or Fuji's colors. In fact, I'd say that's Pentax's specialty, those incredible greens, which is one reason why I chose the K-5 to begin with. Now, I'd love to know what's your take on the continuous autofocus performance between the S1 and the K1? I LOVE the idea of not having to worry about keeping my subject in focus in favor of playing with the composition. If the S1 has significantly better continuous autofocus, especially eye AF, I would choose it over the K1 regardless of the price difference. I worry about those weird Panasonic greens but I do a lot of post processing, so that wouldn't really be a problem in the long run, I'd just add color balance into my workflow. Thanks again, mate! BTW, I just subscribed to your channel. I love that you reply quickly to your commenters. Keep up the good work!

@@Nocturnalis1978 Yes, the K5 is a lovely landscape camera, and you also have access to some great APSc primes like the 20-40mm and 15mm. I was a bit surprised by how different the pictures are actually. They have the same focal length, same aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity and manually set white balance. I presume the different lenses have an impact (there's a few RAW files both with the Pentax 77mm), and the different colour profiles with Pentax leaning more towards landscapes, as you say with reference to the presentation of greens.
I've always been underwhelmed by Pentax' autofocus. The S1 also has a well-deserved reputation for poor auto-focus, especially with video, where the DFD system makes it pulse distractingly. The S1 tries to be smarter with person/animal & eye recognition among other features but these haven't been entirely convincing yet. AF-s is pretty snappy on both cameras. But, manual-focus on the mirrorless S1 is far ahead of the K1. The high-resolution electronic viewfinder, focus-peaking and zoom make manually focussing much better than the K1 such that I'm happier using manual focus large aperture primes. But for continuous autofocus? Both cameras are far behind Canon and Sony. And thanks, glad you like my videos. It's more to connect with fellow photography enthusiasts than anything else.

@@BJEPhoto I'm actually kind of surprised to hear that the S1 autofocus isn't that great. I know DFD isn't up to the hybrid AF standard in Sony and Nikon or the dual pixel AF of Canon but I was under the impression that at 6fps with AF, the S1 hits its mark at least 90 percent of the time. I was just reading DP reviews S1 review and it looked to me like the tracking AF did really well. Did you happen to download the newest firmware? I'd love to know what the S1 is like with the new S5 AF enhancements. The S5 is also very tempting for me but I prefer a larger, more rugged body, so when I heard about the latest firmware, I figured it would negate any advantages of the S5 other than the smaller size. I guess ideally, I'd get both systems but I don't really see much need for 2 very large systems. For me, it would come down to only one larger format system, either Pentax, Panasonic, or Canon (or maybe even the 645Z and all those brilliantly inexpensive 2nd hand lenses on ebay) and a go everywhere/back-up m4/3 camera like the GX9. It's a problem these days 'cause we're so spoiled with so many amazing choices.

The S5 is tempting, it looks like a great value camera. Although the image quality isn't quite as good at high ISOs judging by the DPReview samples. I haven't reviewed the 645z but the viewfinder and build quality on the 645d was lovely. Partly why I chose the S1 was the glimmer of hope for an eventual full-frame Sigma Merrill sensor one day. But then if I was waiting, I'd probably end up very tempted by the A7iv and GH6 when they arrive.

Don't be lazy; FPS and buffer takes two seconds to Google. Autofocus is very dependent on the lens but I'd say they're both significantly slower and less accurate than Sony, and slightly slower and less accurate than Canon & Nikon too. The Panasonic uses depth from defocus which sometimes works quickly but sometimes gets confused and doesn't work at all, even with good light and relatively simple scenes. Because the autofocus isn't entirely reliable on either camera I tend to use manual focus a lot, and the Panasonic S1's EVF and adjustable focus peaking is much better for that.

I think marketing nears the ridiculous when they talk about extraordinarily tough memory cards though. It's largely a non-issue for me. Mine, and I imagine most professionals', are either protected in the camera or protected in the camera bag. However, I've had loads of SD cards fail over the years, so the idea that CF Express cards may be more reliable is appealing. Brinkman of Nikon Europe said the failure rate of XQD cards is 'close to zero'. But I've also not seen any data that substantiate that claim. They're also expensive, like the fastest SD cards, and don't fit in my laptop. I tend to shoot solely in manual mode and judge the exposure from experience but I do use autofocus occasionally and the Panasonic isn't competitive with Sony or Canon yet.
