lyrics: Ever see a blind man cross the road Trying to make the other side? Ever seen a young girl growing old Trying to make herself a bride? So what becomes of you, my love? When they have finally stripped you of The handbags and the gladrags That your poor old granddad Had to sweat to buy you, baby Once I was a young man And all I thought I had to do was smile Well, you are still a young girl And you've borne everything in style So once you think you're in, you're out 'Cause you don't mean a single thing without The handbags and the gladrags That your poor old granddad Had to sweat to buy you Sing a song of six-pence for your sake And drink a bottle full of rye Four and twenty blackbirds in a cake And bake 'em all in a pie They told me you missed school today So what I suggest you just throw them all away The handbags and the gladrags That your poor old granddad Had to sweat to buy, oh-woah They told me you missed school today So what I suggest you just throw them all away The handbags and the gladrags That your poor old granddad Had to sweat to buy you
This song is rich in heart. I want to send this song to my old friends whom I have lost. But I am so certain of rejection I dare not try. Man, didn't we have the best music
I wish they could have used this song in the US series at some point. Like maybe during Jim and Pam’s first kiss or something. Any other moments in the US series this song might go great over?
Love this version of the song, by far the best. I always assumed Big George was the vocalist, only found out recently that he was the musical arranger and that Fin Muir from Waysted actually sings the song
I get ever so happy everytime i hear this - cannot help thinking about The Office - and that said, it's by far the best version. Never mind Mr. Steward or Stereophonics. Thanks, Big George...
This is one of those songs that's so good, it's hard to screw it up as long as you know how to play it. I grew up with Rod's version, so I'm partial to that, but this version here is very touching and enjoyable.
Intro song: "So I suggest you just throw them all away / The handbags and the gladrags" David Brent: buys new leather jacket, ridiculous cowboy boots and an ear piercing XD
Fin Muir's delivery is my favourite for vocals. Big George's performance is fantastic but the studio version is a little more flowery (addition of flute and saxophone) than the shorter bits used for The Office. The closing theme in particular really suited that series so perfectly- there was raw pain in Fin's voice, just like in the characters depicted. What a work of art, the show, the actors, the creators and this theme song!!!
This is a great song because it can be interpreted by so many diverse artists: Rod the Mod, Stereophonics, and Big George each add their unique style to this beautiful tune. OFC extra points for The Office.
This IS a great version of an equally great song.....but.....the "so what becomes of you my love" line is not delivered in the same way as it is in the Office tv show. Sorry to be a bit "anal" but would love to hear THAT version in its entirety.

Out of all the different versions including the one from the 60's and 70's along with the one sung by Rod Stewart this one by Big George is the best.

I'm just like wow!

Indeed!

The best version of this song. Period.
Definitely my favorite version. Rod Stewart is a close second.
1000x this.
Stereophonics doesn’t come close.
It's got that authentic studio production. Here it sounds so crisp.

lyrics:
Ever see a blind man cross the road
Trying to make the other side?
Ever seen a young girl growing old
Trying to make herself a bride?
So what becomes of you, my love?
When they have finally stripped you of
The handbags and the gladrags
That your poor old granddad
Had to sweat to buy you, baby
Once I was a young man
And all I thought I had to do was smile
Well, you are still a young girl
And you've borne everything in style
So once you think you're in, you're out
'Cause you don't mean a single thing without
The handbags and the gladrags
That your poor old granddad
Had to sweat to buy you
Sing a song of six-pence for your sake
And drink a bottle full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds in a cake
And bake 'em all in a pie
They told me you missed school today
So what I suggest you just throw them all away
The handbags and the gladrags
That your poor old granddad
Had to sweat to buy, oh-woah
They told me you missed school today
So what I suggest you just throw them all away
The handbags and the gladrags
That your poor old granddad
Had to sweat to buy you
