  • Taking a look at a few free checks on Monster. I believe the new air pressure sensor is functioning ok. There are some clicking sounds after I turn off the ignition but I think the bike has always done this. Can any other f650 owners comment on this please? Do your bikes make sounds like this?
    I suppose a positive is that it didn’t stall at high speed the other day. And ever since I bought the bike over 10 years ago it has had low speed stalling, but normally is triggered if I haven’t waited for the temperature light to go out before starting. The old resetting the TPS “myth” has always seemed to cure this for me…

    if you turn subtitles on at the 2:10 mark when Katy starts the bike it subtitles as "Music". And that's true how our engine sounds :D

    Katy I've watched all your videos and your trip to Japan has inspired me to plan my own trip so please don't give up yet! :)
    Intermittent faults can be a b***tard but watching the videos back I think there's a couple of things you may have missed.
    You cleaned but didn't check the TPS right? Its a potentiometer so can wear and F650 list this, and the wiring to / from it, as the cause of several similar issues. Worth swapping it out I feel and checking the wiring for bad connections with a multimeter. Easier with 2 people and the wiring diagram.
    While you're there you could also check (or replace) the throttle body manifold for cracks and check that Bosch part number for that Sertao injector, F650 list compatible injectors.
    I've got a '00 single spark I'm restoring and your videos are invaluable! :)

    I also had a stalling issue on my bike. Two places that needed attention. Crack position sensor needed replacing (initially wiring at the socket needed cleaning), and when starting the bike. Hold the starter button an extra 2 seconds after the bike started. The computer needs this time to get stable sensor readings. Hope you get the gremlins out of Monster

      Thanks for your help :) I hope to get the gremlins out too, but I’m kind of excited now about buying a different bike. I’ve owned it for over 10 years now and fancy something a little more powerful. Do you still have your 650gs?

      @@HaynesGarage I still have my F650GS '07 and love the bike. It still has this random stall problem when really cold, but only once in a blue moon. A simple restart of the bike clears it and then all is good. I believe the bug lies somewhere in the computer of the 650. If I remove the battery from the computer for more than 30min the problem vanishes completely for quite some time

      Ah!
      I realized this now . Yes it does have something to do with BMS.
      I normally let my 650gs be disconnected with battery during winter time and I never had stall issue in Winter time. Never.
      Thanks!
      I'm going to garage to cut it for tonight!

    Hi Katy, Have you replaced the fuel pump? I saw you did the filters but not the pump. That's a fairly cheap part and a drop in fuel pressure couldresult in erratic behavior. Cheers

    A fun bike when they're working but too many electrical gremlins for me. Mine had that clicking when the ignition was turned off - think I read that it was the clocks re-calibrating repeatedly (which they shouldn't be!). Wiring to the ignition key block can be disturbed by turning bars to full lock - caused my bike to briefly cut-out on the road. The instrument circuitboard issues are well documented - not robust enough for a device exposed to the elements IMO. None of this much use to you Katy, but I too sold mine on (running a reliable, easy to understand and fix 1981 Kawasaki Z440 now). If you forced me to have another I'd get an earlier / simpler F650 strada.

      Your comment is very useful to me, shows that I’m not alone with these issues, and that it’s ok to accept defeat and to think about a new bike. Test rode a 2020 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT today, not for me. Will do the same with a Triumph Tiger 800 in a few days. They are the only two modern motorbikes that really stand out to me atm, so perhaps I should look in to an older bike (but reliable) if the Tiger doesn’t suit me. Ideally something faster than the GS (need a bit more umpth on the faster roads), comfy, good on fuel, where parts are still easily accessible and not too expensive.? And if it looks nice that’s a bonus ;)

    these bike are funky and decide when to work lol, just for me at least lol. Adjust the clutch to keep it at higher revs, will still probably switch off cause these old bikes draw alotta power. Even put a bigger battery and the bike still stalls after I have my heated grips on for a while - it's hard for her to stay alive. These also get super hot after long rides so keep water topped up and take a break every few hours. Let her warm up for like 5min at least. Basically just ignore it and ride the bike 😂😂❤

      She's old and got some quirks but I love her, taught me the basics but it's been a year and I'm ready for an upgrade😂. Would take the new 800 over this brat but she was a good girl for the most part😊

    Hello Katy. Watched your videos and noticed the same problem what I saw in "Garage Tales" UA-cam channel (BMW F650GS Running Issues). The issue was the same, bike did not want to run in low idle. For them the main reason was the idle valve. But on that channel he has quite good diagnostic steps what maybe could help you. Hope you will get it running! Greetings from Estonia 🇪🇪

      Thanks for your help :) I will check that video out now. It does seem to be a common problem. My low speed stalling seems to happen if I’ve started the bike too quickly without the engine lights going off, or if someone else has ridden it, or if I’ve spent a few weeks working on it and moved the throttle. No more hogs speed stalling as of yet which is good. Perhaps the new battery did cure that after all?

    • @jaanusjaanus2422
      @jaanusjaanus2422 10 місяців тому

      @@HaynesGarage Yes, if the battery is also already little bit "tired" it can cause issues. And I agree that this stalling issue seems to be a common for f650gs. I am a new owner for one f650gs and just gathering information and going over all of the issues and problematic things on this bike in winter time, to have a problem free riding season on TET roads next year. That's why I stumbled on your videos. I hope you will get the gs running well and you will not sell it, you have done lots of work on it, so it will serve you well I think in the coming adventures 🙂

    hi, if you get an OBD2 reader, a cable to connect it to the bike, and motoscan app on an android phone, you can get a lot of information from that. the socket is under the right hand fairing. by the way, thats an ambient air temperature sensor, not air pressure sensor

    Ours does that clicking when shut off (the tach and speedo) for 30 seconds - I assumed it was related to the factory alarm system, but apparently not. Totally understand your frustration and concern, especially at this point in your life. If I were there I'd make you an offer!

      🤣@@c.meyers2882 Sounds just like my friend Paul. I think we’d all make a great mechanical team.
      The very first time Paul offered to help teach me about mechanics (before my trip to Japan - 2017) he asked me to prep my Nans garage ready to start work on my bike. I didn’t have my own garage at that point. When he arrived a few weeks later he discovered I’d put up tinsel and decorated it ready for the Christmas festivities. I soon realised that’s not what he meant but it made a fun atmosphere. Paul then helped me setup the space, using some of my Grandads old furniture and tools to make a workshop in there, and I found a couple of his old tobacco tins that I took travelling with me. I made sure there was a kettle and biscuits on the go at all times 😀

    Hi i have no experience with this particular bike, i am just wondering does it use coil pack or conventional coil, , i had a Kawasaki er6n it started and ran great, but as soon as it warmed up it started to stall and buck, i tried everything i could think of without success, i checked the coils with a multimeter and they were in spec, after checking again after the fault started it turned out the coil was breaking down when it got hot, changed this and the bike ran perfect .

    • @HaynesGarage
      @HaynesGarage  8 місяців тому

      That’s really interesting, thank you for your help. The ignition coil this bike uses is part no 12 13 2 346 570. I have actually found that the stalling issue is much better now I’ve replaced the battery. When I replaced the fuel injector in one of my previous videos we did take the time to check out all the electrical connections and clean everything up, and all seemed well.

      I’ve updated the fuel injector but I am wondering if there is some kind of bug in the software. I have heard about people upgrading the computer although I don’t think they’ve all been success stories. It’s so frustrating when the fault is so intermittent. Thanks for your help :)

    Hello, my wife has exactly the same bike and she has exactly the same issue. I've noticed when the intermittent power loss occurs, there are voltage drops. However, couldn't pinpoint the actual cause of the issue. Have you solved the issue eventually? or still struggling with the issue?

  • @smd-tech
    @smd-tech 11 місяців тому +1

    Put your diagnostic into live values, monitor battery voltage plus whatever measuring pids relate to the fault codes you are getting, then vigorously wiggle every connector and every bend and pinch point in the loom, watching for anything that affects the values. Failing that, i will buy the bike off you for sensible money.

      @HaynesGarage  11 місяців тому

      Thank you. I think I may have to call up my friend to help me with that. I don’t know how much more time to spend on it trying to find the fault although I’d rather spend time on it than more money! Thanks for the advice. How much would you buy it for?

    • @smd-tech
      @smd-tech 11 місяців тому

      @@HaynesGarage around 900 is the going rate for these around here if they are faulty, obviously a good chunk more if they are not. With intermittent faults like yours many sellers would keep their mouth shut and hope it behaves on the test ride and shrug it off with "its never done that for me" if questioned, but your your videos deny that option from you. Hopefully you manage to fix it yourself though. I would bet on it being a chafed or corroded wire somewhere but chasing it down can be a mission. Not impossible though , certainly easier than trying to keep an old renault running .

      Hi,
      I’m so sorry for the late reply. Have you been able to fix your bike? The only thing I can think of atm is whether you have checked the speed cable that connects on to the wheel. It is a magnet and can collect a lot of metal splinters and dirt from the road and sometimes becomes faulty, or the cable itself may have perished?
