  • Nikon D3400 is an entry-level dSLR camera. In this video I review the D3400 and tell you what I like and don't so much like about it. Overall It is one of the best options out there if you want to get into serious photography. Nikon D3400 is capable, sturdy and easy to operate. I have bought and sold quite a few cameras but the simple Nikon D3400 has survived next to the more advanced cameras. This video will also show you the sample photos and sample video recorded with the Nikon D3400.

    My First digital camera D5600. I love this thing. The moving screen makes for easier low to the ground shots.

      Hi Ian! The D5600 is a great camera. The fact that it has a tilting screen fixes the main issue that the D3400 has. Kind regards!

      Thank you so much for watching. Indeed, the D3400 is a great camera. It does exactly what you want from a camera and is very non-intimidating. I'm using my D3400 on a regular basis, mostly with a Tamron 90mm macro lens these days. Best of luck to you!

      Hi Thomas! Thank you very much for watching. A D3400 with lots of lenses sounds like a very nice way to do photography. If I may, there is one lens that I'd recommend the most - the Nikon AF-S 50mm F/1.8 G (ua-cam.com/video/cz1i38ZGQ5U/v-deo.html). It's a full frame lens but I like it even more with my D3400 than with a full frame Nikon. Best of luck to you!

    Hi there! I have a choice of borrowing a D3100 or D3400 for a Northern Lights cruise holiday - I'm a beginner and was thinking of getting a compact digital point and shoot camera but would either of these be just as good with the only drawback being the size - which one should I borrow? Thanks

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Robert! Thank you for asking. The D3400 is much newer technology, lighter and will take many more photos with a single charge. It will give you a better resolution and cleaner photos (no low pass filter). Both cameras are equally easy to operate. I would recommend D3400. Thank you for watching and I wish you a wonderful holiday!

    I am thinking of getting a camera to start my photography. Is the Nikon D3400 okay to take with the 50mm prime lens? If it's not good then what would be the best camera in this budget right now?

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi S.M. 01! Yes, the D3400 is absolutely a good choice to be used with a 50 mm prime lens. The best Nikkor 50mm prime is the AF-S 50mm G because it has a motor inside. So you can use automatic focusing. If you have the motor-less AF 50mm D, then you can only use manual focusing. Kind regards!

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo  4 місяці тому +2

      Hi! Thanks for watching. The filters you see in front of the lenses in my videos are typically simple protective filters (just glass), or sometimes uv-protection filters. These are the most basic filters, usually made by Hoya. I use them to make sure that the glass surface of my lens isn't getting scratched. The filter needs to be high quality otherwise it may influence your photo quality. You can pick them up at any camera store. Kind regards!

    Hi Tim, thanks for the informative video. I'm a beginner and looking for a special use SLR camera. I fly wildlife survey in Alaska for a living. I need to step my game up from my phone. I take pictures of wolves, bears, dens, wounded animals etc... that I need to document my work These pics would be taken at 500' to 1000' feet roughly from the subject on the ground. And travelling at around 60 mph. I can go higher to make the movement less, but I know that would require more zoom too. My question/concern is you mention that the D3400 doesn't do well over ISO 400 and also not on days that aren't real bright/sunny. Given this would it still be a good camera for my purpose? I don't need prof. level photos, just better than an Iphone. The kit I'm looking at comes with 18-55 and a 70-300 lens. Would these work well? Sorry for the long question and I know there are many variables. Just looking for your general opinion. And if not this model, is there a better one in similar price range? Thanks so much for any advice.

    • @LanceWilliams-wn2xf
      @LanceWilliams-wn2xf 5 місяців тому +1

      Hi TOM, (Sorry, for the "Tim" above :) You also mentioned this camera doesn't have any stabilization, I would think that would be important shooting from an airplane? If so, is it likely that the two kit lenses would offer this? Thanks again, sorry for the longest question ever!!

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Lance! Thank you for asking. The D3400 is a very good general purpose camera. However, the photos depend more on the lens you are using than the camera. If you are using lenses that do not have vibration reduction then you would be best served by a camera that has in body images stabilization. Nikon crop sensor cameras do not have that. Are you thinking about getting a Nikon, or are you open to other options, too? If you are considering Nikon then most likely the D3400 is a good option. Going with a Nikon is generally a good idea. Their dSLR cameras are very good and lenses are affordable. Hybrid cameras would be another option but this will make everything more expensive (especially the lenses). Kind regards!

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo  5 місяців тому

      @@LanceWilliams-wn2xf Hi Lance! Yes, the kit zoom lenses offer vibration reduction. So if you only use those then it won't matter that the body isn't stabilized. It seems to me that the D3400 should work well for you. It offers great image quality and it's very easy to operate, too. Best of luck!

      Hi Taras! Thank you for asking. These cameras are both very nice. The image quality is about the same. What the D5300 will give you is more options but not better photo quality. Most notably you will get a tilting screen. However the D3400 is lighter and newer technology. It also has bluetooth and better color depth. If the D5300 is $100 more expensive I'd get the D3400.
