  • In 1994, the UCLA Men’s Swim Team was cut by the Athletic Department in compliance with Title IX and Budgetary cuts. Years later, and we still don’t have one of the most successful swim teams of all time back, despite UCLA’s move to the BIG 10 bringing them $70 Million / year in extra revenue. College Swimming is at a turning point and needs schools like UCLA to fund a Men’s Swim team to go along with their $14 Million Spieker Aquatic Pool. What will UCLA do…

    Signed. I just graduated from the University of Oklahoma, which has a semi similar situation. I swam on the schools club team for most of my academic career and was constantly shocked by how bad the aquatic facilities were. The fact that a flagship state university didn't have any form of d1 swimming or anything close to a proper natatorium baffles me. The university scrapped its d1 program in the 80s and completely forgot about the sport since. It's obviously not as big of a market as southern California, but they would easily be able to pull in regional talent from places like Dallas. If schools like Mizzou and Arkansas can have successful programs, I don't see why OU cant. I only hope that with the schools move to the SEC, creating a proper facility and adding the sport will at least become a conversation. We will be one of only three schools in the conference without any form of a d1 swim program.

      It’s insane to me that only 3 BIG 12 schools have / can afford to have swim teams. Such a same for all those local athletes (swimmers) hoping to compete for their favorite university who can’t

    UCLA is my dream school but in order to be able to attend I would need to have a mens swim team in which I can fight to get a scholarship in to cover the large cost of tuition. Otherwise without a mens swim team theres a high chance I will not get to attend UCLA.

    Nice video!
    Schaef is right, it’ll need legislation to balance scholarships. Or add women’s tackle football.
    AD has a budget deficit to pay off, but the cost to run men’s swimming, considering you’re not closing the pool, is small.

    There’s a massive elephant in the room the Olympics 2028. What a wonderful opportunity to market UCLA in terms of the most popular Olympic sport and bringing back swimming to UCLA. By the way my son is looking to swimming at the swim camp at UCLA in July. An amazing opportunity for a 11 year old New Zealander to experience the USA swimming.

    • @KyleMillis
      @KyleMillis  Рік тому

      Love to hear that he’s going to come get to experience UCLA swimming.
      What a great point about the 2028 Olympics, they will have so many people interested in Olympic sports in the LA market and only 1 D1 Men’s Swim team to show for it (USC).

    There's also a University of Washington swimming story to tell. Perhaps if the entire Pac-12 moves to the Big 10, we could start a similar petition. And another petition for the Big 10 to change its name to better reflect the number of teams in the conference. Big 28? 30?

      We are a Husky family and my daughter is verbally committed to UCLA. Think there was some momentum to bring at least women's swimming back to UW when Covid kind of killed it (to my knowledge). PAC 12 definitely needs more swim teams if they don't fall apart with UCLA and USC leaving!

      @KyleMillis  Рік тому

      @@jenniferandrews4096 Wow! I had no idea. I hope that that momentum comes back. They have a great championship pool to swim at in KCAC, might need to rebuild the on campus pool though.

    UCLA should have a men’s swimming team, for many of the reasons you outlined and more. CA high schools (and younger club programs) are building a deep bench of talent, there is no reason why every CA state school with a pool doesn’t have a men and women’s varsity swimming program. That being said, I think this video is overly critical of Title IX. Title IV revolutionized women’s sports and unlocked access for so many women athletes. Additionally, Title IX is a critical safeguard against sexual assault, harrassment, and other forms of gender based discrimination.
    Its incorrect to characterize Title IX requirements as 50/50 split. The actual law is really vague and only says women athletes must recieve equal benefits, opportunity, and treatment. While most schools have adjusted their rosters to be in compliance, the only statute that requires proportional funding to participation is scholarships.
    You’ve spotlighted some awesome women on your channel and clearly support women’s athletics. You then by approximation support Title IX. The call to action to repeal the legislation is pretty off base.

    • @KyleMillis
      @KyleMillis  Рік тому

      Lots of swimmers have expressed concerns about the vagueness of Title IX and I definitely think it’s an issue that needs to be revisited. It will be a key factor in determining the viability of UCLA Men’s Swimming.

    Nice try. UCLA has a huge legacy athletic operating budget deficit. Big Ten move was to help pay off the deficit. Pipe dream not happening for Men's Swimming.

    • @KyleMillis
      @KyleMillis  Рік тому

      Sure the deficit is large, BUT this move would take a bit enough chunk out to warrant some extra cash sitting around.
