I own the the Scout and it's one of my all time favorite all around axes. 28" axe is my sweet spot. The steel & heat treat that Helko uses on this bit is top notch. I highly recommend getting this axe.
I just got one too, to take with me on winter hikes and other trips where weight isn't such an issue. As I'm tall and have had troubles finding an axe that can be safe for me to use without kneeling all the time, while still wanting to take it with me on trips. I can't see that they make them any more, which is a pity as this mid size is just what I needed. But I got one of those that were left, at least. Thanks for the overview! I'm from North Europe and won't buy this from the Americas of course, but I find them to be of good design and wonder why they're not better known.
oh my goodness these are all gorgeous axes ! An avid collector and buscrafter with over 100 axes (new and old) I have about 8 German axes, although non Helko's they are top notch steel (Germans). Between these two basic styles there is no "best." They are both functionally outstanding head designs. The Traditional hews better with the wider thinner bit (I have other Rhineland patterns nd have used them a lot) Both cut and split well. The Classics design is simple but will bite deeper into hard wood with a narrower bit. But both fully capable in all situations. These are gorgeous axes. I will be buying several of these this year :) Thanks for the review. That peacock in the background sounds happy :)
Yes they are. We are going to be out of stock for most of Helko for a little bit longer, everything is moving really slow but you can put on back order. If you are a collector check out our website we have a lot of different axe brands.
Nice collection of axes. Thank's a lot for your video. I use and enjoy the spectacular Helko Spalthammer maul (6¾lb, 36") a lot, to split mainly dried eucaliptus, wich is extremely hard. But for rounds under 10", I like more and more the awesome Spaltaxt (4½lb, 28"), wich is a joy to use. At 5' 7", the Spalthammer, like any maul, can be quite tiring after a few hours of use, but not the Spaltaxt.
How did the hatchet work out as a carver? I'm thinking about getting it as my first carving axe. Its less than half the price of the GF large carving hatchet and looks like it would make a great backpacking axe too.
At first I thought he was German. Then I realized his parents talked to him like a baby his whole life and now he's a grown ass man who sounds like a 3 year old

I have the Black Forest pack axe and hatchet. Love them so much. I tend to grab them before my similarly sized Gränsfors Bruk axes.
Great video thank you I just ordered the Bavarian Woodworker. All their designs are so nice.
Pretty nice collection there!
Excellent job showing the difference between them! Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Thinking put that Expedition handle on the Tasmania head…
Hessen woodworker is one axe that I will buy from you...... The Rhine pack ax is another one I will get.... :)

Another happy customer I just purchased another two of your exes
How much for exes?
Really like the traditional look
Nice collection 👌

Can you do a spaltaxt, Saxon, and GB large splitting axe comparison?
would like to see you using them. performance tests
cool to see the lineup side by side. Of course I can't afford any of these
Buy once cry once! Vintage axe heads used to be very affordable but a good one runs the same price or more than a new axe these days.
What about the double bit Odyssey?
Curious where that accent is from? The non rhoticity I never hear around here in the PNW. Great video and great axes!
Details, details, details

He has a speech impediment obviously, do you feel like a big man now that you have made fun of his disability ?
At first i thought ur mother was classy, then she rimmed my asshole while ur “dad” watched in the corner…and thats the story of how i met your mother.
What a bully. Find some class.
