Sometimes this is used (typically in lower level orchestras) to mimic percussion when there is none. Edit: it's mostly the cellos that get stuck doing this.
I'd say the second one is more of a richochet than spiccato, spiccato is usually closer to the string and uses the fingers of the bow hand instead of the whole hand/arm! 😊
@@caryn9953ricochet is much more uncontrolled and relies on the repeated bounces but he’s singularly playing a very controlled bounce which is just spiccatto
you reminded me of my dad, hes a guitarist and over quarantine I got really good at bass guitar and he would want me to play certain bluegrass songs, my response was "i dont know how to play upright" but he would always tell me "music is music" and i am nlw a firm believer that if you try hard enough anything can be played on almost anything if its fun for you
If you want to play a violin-like instrument but picking like a guitar, choose a mandolin. Same tuning as a violin but with double strings and you use a plectrum.
"Burn the Witch" by Radiohead is notable for having an entire orchestra using exclusively picks. Ofc there's still legato sections but an entire orchestra using guitar picks for the perfect panick-ey sound!
Somehow bouncing the bow sounds more like guitar than plucking the strings or using a pick does. That last technique you showed convinced me I need to look find a violin asap
Andrew Bird was the man who opened up so many possibilities to me with violin and made me want one Still haven't gotten a proper one that I can actually play but dang I want one still
I hear picking and plucking when done too hard/too much can lessen the life of the strings, it’s definitely true in some degree but I don’t know if it’s negligible or significant so keep that in mind
I once played a piece by Anna Clyne that called for bowing the tailpiece and making it vibrate. it made this weird buzzing sound and it felt like my violin was gonna fall apart lol
I have a dream of putting together a massive band with the standard guitar, bass, drums, keys, but also violin, cello, viola, harp, brass, and wood winds. But all electric versions of hybrid acoustic electric versions set up for midi control. The sound does not come from the instrument or the amp. But instead every single band member has their own massive modular synth specifically designed to sound like and work perfectly with their instrument. So it’s like a real orchestra, but electronic music.
My grandfather wrote a song in the 60’s called “La Match” it was written after a foreman hid his bow at a lumber mill and he used a wooden match for what ended up becoming the chorus of the song it’s Acadian fiddle music “Fiddlin Dan” was his stage name his son /my uncle Johnny Comeau plays it exceptionally well he was Cayouche’s fiddle player and played mandolin shack out anything from the album “Last Call” it’s all French. But any fiddle player would appreciate it
You can drag the stick on the string and it still makes noise. Also i have never listened to the differences between a regular violin and an electric but this sounds so different 😮
It’s generally not good to strike with the back of the bow, it could damage the bow especially if you do it frequently. A pencil or wooden dowel is a good substitute.
The term for plucking with fingers is pizzicato and i only know that because I played a bard in dnd who embodied the spirit of "never let them know your next move" and mainly played their violin this way to mess with people. When they eventually replaced their violin with a magic lute after tuning it carefully in camp... they pulled out the bow for their violin and used it on the lute
I once played a song for all city called ear-egami where we used paper as bows and to pluck and in a part of the song we even played it in a banjo style
I mean it makes sense of you think about it, it’s not that different to a fretless Guitar tbh, but I play bass, I don’t know a thing about either Guitar nor Violin, especially Violin
Now try slapping the violin

Okay Davie504
Pretty sure Dave Matthews Band has done that.
Left hand pizzicato has entered chat:
he did... in this video...
I first thought the question was referring to choosing a violin 💀
Same 😭
Don't quote the Abbott and Costello bit, don't quote the Abbott and Costello bit, don't quote...

For anyone who is curious, the names of all these techniques (in order) are:
Detaché
Spiccato
Pizzicato
Col Legno
w/Pick
Chop

I thought the second one was staccato😅

Is Detaché one how for each note?

I don't think that was an electric violin. I think it was just plugged into an amplifier
Half of his store is just electric violins 😭

that’s not an electric

LMAO you had me in the first part. You can do whatever you want is the hardest part of music, but also the most valuable lesson to learn.
Also applies to pretty much every art form
This isn't your average everyday pizzicato...
This is...
Advanced pizzicato
pickzicato
teethcato is even more advanced
Your vibe is that of a middle school band director and I adore it. Much love ❤

Wow that's really cool. Its actually crazy how good a violin sounds played with a pick.
I’ve played with Tracy Silverman in concert before. That final technique is his bread and butter!
Tracy is a good friend.

I have a mandolin and violin, it is really nice that they have the same tuning since I’m learning both. ☺️

You make violin cool!
My Aunt, Alice Clemens picked strings a lot. She was relatively well known in New York :)
Just realised that the initials for this show spells out “TITI”
…That has got to be intentional
That first sequence just feels so good! Recommend with headphones.
I like the major-scale "tune" you wrote there. :)
Thanks. Came up with that all on my own.
Your violins are so cool
The guitar, violin and bass all shredding the same thing would sound IMMENSE.
This felt kind of like a rundown on the differences in playing a valve vs slide trombone

Yeah - but sometimes you have to suffer for your art.
"Bowed banjo is the future of rock and roll"

Family friend played violin and guitar professionally. Sometimes he would strum chords on his violin and it sounded awesome

On a cello you can strum that thang like it's a harp. So satisfying to play a perfect cadence that way.

"This is sacrilegious."
"Nvm he's an electric violin player."
When you plug it with your fingers it makes a very similar noise to my lyre harp! Not 100% the same but extremely close. I like it!
This is why Bards are so popular in DnD. No way music being so powerful and important IRL doesn't translate into fantasy.
I tried violin before guitar.
I'm good at guitar but could not get the violin. Could never get the bow to work so I'd say props Mr. Violin man
He dragged the bow across the string, but it didn't make an evil hiss
That last one sounded a whole lot like “welcome to Tally Hall” gave me niche-indie jumpscare
I would say it is more similar to the Tally Hall Internet show intro
It’s generally not good to strike with the back of the bow, it could damage the bow especially if you do it frequently. A pencil or wooden dowel is a good substitute.
Why do you insist on showing the violin played on the wrong side? Aren't you trying to educate?
Pizzicato with a pick. It would be so cool to see sweeping with a pick on violin.

Owen Pallett was fun to watch do these like 20 years ago. Saw him in some little bar in CIncinnati
Today I found out there's very sick way to make country beats using violin. Next step: get a violin.
My favourite is the last one or the one where you just smack the bow into it backwards
That thing makes music.
That last bit is like a palm mute with the fiddle thing
I use a pick for doing pizzicato
Plucking is usually the first thing you learn in violin
Definitely livelier than pizzicato with fingers
But tricky to hold the bow ad pick at the same time 🤔
Jerry Goodman does this in a few of the live Mahavishnu Orchestra performances
Compromise when dad tells you to practice your violin but you want to play baseball
That look on your face, well done man.
I like THIS technique
A violin is basically just a weird ukelele where you use a tool tust constantly plucks the strings
When I silently practice during my orchestra practice I flip the bow upside down so no one knows what I’m playing except me
Oh I need more of that last bit
Devil's Dance is a piece that begins with plucking. It's beautiful, go listen to it.
Australian band the dirty three has a lead violinist who does dull on pick strumming like a power chord on the violin.
The intro to Flobots “Handlebars” is a Viola being plucked just like that!
Sarah is a good friend!
Ohh I looove that occasional crunch in a song
I'll take a cello. They look nice and slappable.
Not gonna lie using the back of the bow sounds unique and good
