    I feel like interpolation on 2d animation really destroys a lot of the punch the movement has. It makes actions seem slower and less impactful, so even if it's happening at the same speed it feels like there's less force in it. The running at 0:45 is a good example of this.

    The interpolation has moments where it looks really good, especially when shifting perspective like in the 360• Spin-around. But it removes a lot of the personality/punch and sometimes even messes up the timing when compared to the original 18 FPS. Like in the running segment, everything is less bumpy so it feels less like frantic running and more like ice skating or something.

The only scene where this would likely get complicated would be the last one when the ghost goes through the cat.

      I think the idea is more that the frame rate you animate in is a specific design choice that directly impacts and informs how you choose to express and emphasize certain movements. People aren’t complaining, they’re more trying to communicate their opinion on it, which is subjective. They aren’t ripping on the video, because as you said the video is doing exactly as intended, they’re simply commenting on it.

    It's always interesting to see how the interpolation really helps some types of motion, and ruins others. It doesn't play well with frames that are intended to be sudden movments, or jaggy shaking. It works great things that are meant to be smooth. Aimkid uses both heavily, and this really highlights the difference. Right near the end, for instance, you can see the house shaking and it doesn't look right in the interpolation.
    The only way to use this technology, while preserving the intent of the artist, is for the artist to hand-pick which frames get interpolated. You might even have to go so far as to choose individual layers to interpolate or not. For example, smoothing out the ghost while leaving the scared guy's outline looking shaky.

  • @Skooteh
    @Skooteh 3 роки тому +6

    I think that the higher fps is a LOT clearer in the faster cuts like the toast popping (0:40) and washing the dishes (0:50). I don't know if this is just because of fps though because even the stills are sharper (it could be due to video compression or something). That visual clarity definitely improves those sections.
    It also definitely makes some of the more jarring moments smoother than they should be like running on the carpet (0:45). I almost want to say that making different scenes (or even characters) in different framerates would be ideal (like into the spiderverse) but that would be a HUGE amount of work.

    • @chatboss000
      @chatboss000 3 роки тому +1

      It might be easier than you think depending on the workflow - if an animator keeps characters and animated BGs separate than those can be rendered separately, sent to a GAIN if needed, and then recomposited.
      (the biggest challenge being deciding on a final framerate.)

    Not trying to be salty or anything but anytime 2d gets interpolated it looks so much worse, it just takes the punch and ironically the fluidity out of everything and makes the animation feel completely different. Like I said no hate cause you weren't claiming this was a remaster or anything but I still really don't like interpolated animation.

    The biggest mind blow for me is learning that the original was only animated at 18fps, yet looks so smooth in its motion.

    I agree the interpolated version is missing something but I can also definitely see possibilities for improvement too, I imagine Aimkid could use it in places good effect.

    Aimkid's way of animating and style are so fluid, that all you can see in the interpolation is the AI's faults. The AI makes some shots just look... wrong. I prefer the original. AI interpolation has some good features and can improve many animations, but this *18 fps* animation is too smooth for it. Props to aimkid, this is so awesome.

    It's a cool effect for sure, but it definitely can mess up the rhythmically timed movements of the animation, and often make some movements less clear and more confusing since less time is spent on the clear shape that they're trying to convey. I still think that this type of interpolation is best used for things that aren't animated, since I think animation is where it can do the most "damage"

    I think the interpolation really lends itself well to rotoscoping, and makes small things like the toast popping out of the toaster look so real, but the rest of the animation is really smoothed out and made a little too... squishy... Very interesting either way

  • @StrikerTheHedgefox

    This is better than most DAIN_APP interpolations I've seen. It's not often that it preserves the flow of motion as well as seen here. You normally lose all sense of things like holds and sudden movements, it becomes smeared, or looks very unevenly paced (lots of rapid lurching between minor and major movements). While there is still some loss here, it holds up remarkably well.

  • @buzzedgalaxy
    @buzzedgalaxy 3 роки тому +1

    Gonna be honest and just say this looks bad. Sure it still has impact, but that's only because the original does it so well that it can be viewed when the framerate is changed.
    I know there was no bad intention in making this video and that this was simply a test you wanted to share. I feel that this technology can work, but it won't when it is placed onto an animation that was not meant to be viewed at a higher framerate.
