- In this video I'm going to take apart famously known BMW electric water pump to find out why it always fails.
Many people says it fails because of the coolant gets inside and causes electrical shortage and fatal failure but as it turned out it's not always the case.
I WILL BE GRATEFUL FOR COMMENTS BELOW IF ANYONE COULD CONTRIBUTE WITH THEIR EXPERIENCES WHY ELSE IT FAILS.
Holly crab why so many electronics built in that housing. It should be only a switch and possible power regulator when it is on or off whenever the pump needs to be engaged to recirculate the water
I also repaired many dishwashers and found most of newer model of them are using the circulation pump that have same bearings inside the pump. The bearing is not normal metal one, but the graphite. The after around 5 years, the graphite bearing is worn off, the impeller can be rotated manually, but as its axle is offsite of bearing center, the rotator touches the wall of the chamber, the extra friction is added to the rotator, and the impeller fails to be rotated by electro magnetic field force. I think your pump may have a similar root cause.
I only found one of dishwasher got BLDC driver circuit board was burned out in more than 100 cases of dishwasher repairing.
The most of components of the pump can be designed stronger. But the submarined bearing is hard to be made into a stronger part. Then the whole piece of pump is fragile. @@HK-fz5rn
Really appreciate this video, taking your time to educate
My E36 hasn't killed one of these yet. Knock on wood lol. Loved the video, keep it up!
Thank you
E36s have electric pumps??
Get rid of that car now!!!! You’ve been warned.
You are lucky that E36 do not have electric water pump.
The part you found burned up looks like resistor (just like the one for blower motor) and what kills stuff like that is low battery voltage and since have off electrons on bmw alive wen your engine off. Like you open driver’s door fuel pump tuns on you do that to many times battery goes down and burns up fuel pump control module. If you need do anything with it you have to connect charger to car battery specially if battery not new or it’s cold outside. All it takes is taking to your buddy wen your truck or door is open. Wen I work on them only with charger connected or jumper cables just to run diagnostic with scanner and engine off. Every bmw I’m getting to work on is after it set for some time owner was getting something in out of a car without starting it battery goes low and whole lot of electronics goes out. That’s number one reason for failure. To much electronics to drown down battery quickly.
The X3 2007 code is 2E84 for who doesnt know , it states that the coolant pump is missing because of an internal electrical damage .
Like the jazz music background and description of dissection
If it does not fail due to the plastic (blended to degrade and fail at a predetermined rate) it will fail because the computer said it should fail right about now.
3:00. What was holding? The terminal connection is soldered together and u broke it? That means it will never be put back together?
There should be another gasket seal between the black front cover and the aluminum casing where the circuit board sits on. That could be where the leak usually is from?
there is a class action lawsuit which has been settled that covers this. car must have been less than 7 years and 84,000 miles when replaced Shelton Oliver, et al. v. BMW Of North America LLC, Case No. 2:17-cv-12979,
lol what electronic board on the pump it self. bad idea
this structure allow the water run into the chamber and two bearings are running inside the water and in wet condition. the oil inside the bearing is washed out, the bearings are worn out more easily than the bearing running outside and in dry condition.
Thanks. I was always wondering if it was an electric fault. Lots of power and lots of heat running through... can't be good for that complexity level of electronics.
Looks like material fatigue and electrical problem in this case. Vibration and heat cycles are good point.
Why does BMW keep putting plastic in contact with hot oil, hot water or high friction places?
Let's not even start about electronics and electricals.
Simple. Make additional money for maintenance and cost reduction
You are thinking from a consumers (your) point of view. Think business (theirs) and a light bulb will light up.
@@crxdelsolsir I agree with you. BMW try to get more profit from the business with making their product break down easily.
I ended up buying a pierreburg waterpump so I don't have to worry about that plastic cover
You cannot use Pierreburg WP if you have active drive feature.
Good day sir
Is it possible to repair BMW water pump
Imagine driving your BMW at 75-80mph on the interstate, and that so-called water pump cracks, or burns out!!!! Your coolant won’t circulate, or just leaks out...... then, you’ll have Instant engine overheat.... and ultimate engine damage.
To automakers and engineers, these things are cash cows. Designed to fail, and screw consumers out of their hard earned dough. There should be laws in place to prohibit cars with these horrible designs from being on US roadways and highways, and protections to consumers, from these greedy automakers and engineers.
Nothing beats belt driven water pumps. No wonder these cars depreciate like a car battery falling off a workbench.
Sudden coolant loss and engine overheat/damage can happen at any car any time, modern cars will go to limp mode before engine damage will happen so you can safely pull over.
Exactly what happened to me in my X5 @ 63,000 miles. Had to get a long flatbed tow at 2am. Done with BMWs
@@tellucas I agree. Think how long the A/C and heat pump fan works in your house. Pretty much forever. Electric motors can last a human lifetime easy. Make the propeller and brushes serviceable. Are the electronics in that German car UL insulated and approved? It does not look like it to me. Smart BMW owner would look in to that and could sue for a lot of money if their not UL approved for use in the states. Example: Kirby vacuum cleaners are triple insulated. In essence, triple UL approved. If a vacuum maker can make a electric motor that well insulated and designed, I think a high end car company could too.
@@starbattles1 "Are the electronics in that German car UL insulated and approved?" Yes they are, germans are in that term over-particular.
@@tellucas removing the electronics outside of the coolant pump housing is step to making it more reliable. On the latest generation BMW in-line 6 cylinder engines, the B58 and S58 engines, there are two coolant pumps, a mechanical one for the engine and an electric one for the air to coolant intercooler.
Because they designed tthem that way. Fail around 90,000 kilometres. My BMW went through 3 water pump with 170k miles. My Lexus has the original water pump with 320,000 miles. Yes, 320,000 miles
EDIT: i had water pump, thermostat, alternator replaced at the dealer $5300!!
Sorry to hear that
@@MechAdventures Thanks. :;) i still love the car. More fun to drive than the Lexus.
I bought a 99 accord in mint condition with only 140k miles for just $3200. Who is smarter?
Were the waterpumps really dead and did they checked it ? Im at 250k miles with the first water pump and its doing error codes but its still running fine. I smell bullshit.
@@audispecials 09 x5 gave out at 117K . Cost me almost $600 including 3bolts needed and 2gal coolant. I guess its just the electronics of the WP being an electric one. Ist sign is the fan immediately on the high speed sounds like a jet even in a cold engine, on and off . As soon as that sounds happened I replaced it and everthings good since then.
check the outside plastic part for cracks
That's what happaned to mine, it startrd to split at the seam. BMW use plastic, so it fails on a regular interval. Estimate from deal to replace water pump and thermostat: $3200
@@BryanChance ahuh. And all knows it is a pain in the ass to do it.
update: yes it can also leak trough plastic body crack caused by heat cycle fatigue.
Is it possible to repair BMW water pump sir
@@BuchiAjah its not possible to diy repair it.
Usually a BMW water pump last between 100-120.000 km normal drive But if u drive ur car a the maximum performance almost daily, the water pump gona fail between 60-70.000 km
Mine did a 135000 km
Mine lasted just over 100,000 miles
this type of motor should last forever, weird well its bmw haha
When the electric water pump tends to run while the vehicle is off, are those signs that it is a bad pump?? Have no check engine light
No the electric pump is supposed to do that to help cool the turbos it’s one of the few benefits of an ELECTRIC water pump
Depends, they are designed to run independently to cool critical components after you shut off the engine. However (and this has happened to me) the control electronics can go bad causing the pump to run constantly with the car off until the battery no longer has enough charge to run it anymore.
@@wgcpfci have the same problem, mine keeps running till i get dead battery in a few days, do replacing the water pump the solution? Or what was for you the solution?
Is there any reliable parts?
After driving around 45 minutes, I placed my hand on Hood and noticed the side nearer to coolant reservoir is cool. But the other side is very hot. What could be the problem?
i assume its from sun. half of the hood wont get hot from engine
I watched this video twice. because I got water pump problem also.
But my problem symptoms on my car are:
- no water returned into the water expansion tank.
- after some minutes running the engine, the dark smoke coming out from the engine, the flame almost coming out. I have to use garden hose to distinguish the smoke, very risk!
When I removed the pump, I found the electrical socket and wire plug are both totally burned out/melted, I even cannot recognize the layout of the pins of the socket and the wires of the plus. This is very bad, because I cannot find a place to buy a socket plug. I am even not able = to do a hard wiring connection with the new pump, as I don't know the layout of pins and wires. Do your guys have any suggestion? Thanks,
Thank you for input
Online stores like fcp euro and Ecs tuning have replacement connectors and BMW forums have wiring schematics
Hello. Just changed my N55 water pump. What was the brand of your pump? Was it the oem original first pump (Continental)?
This one is Continental but they are all made the same, VDO siemens or Pierburg
@@MechAdventures Thanks. I replaced a strange-named non-working water pump with a VDO. Will check the name and post here.
My pump was a very recent replacement made by Bryman 11517588885, manufactured 2018 12. While the onboard car diagnostics passed the coolant system, the pump test with a proper scan tool revealed the pump did not respond to requests for speed tests/controls and only seemed to run on one fixed speed. Also, when taken apart there was a very strong acrid smell of burnt circuits.
So for this very vital engine part, I'd only recommend OEM or similar parts... (pics available)

@@sandysaab9357 i have never heard of this brand
Can i test a water pump without the coolant hoses just the electric connector??
you can while its still connected to the car. depends on model / turn ignition on and press gas pedal down or few times down to initiate water pump run.
The impeller is cracked change the impeller or get a new waterpump
get new pump
Looks like the transformer
This part is ver unreliable because it breakdown while I'm taking a long trip, it can be very costly.
That electronic board is badly placed on that pump.
Not really
Check out a Volvo D13 diesel in a prevost coach bus
Check out its ecm placement
It all has a purpose you may not see
This is a engineered $$$ GRAB for BMWs service dept !! Sorry but these cars shouldn’t have these “BASTARD” type issues left and right. 🤢
these days
euw😉😉😉😉😚☺😋😋
Umm it’s a no brained. Engine 🔥 esp BMW Engine heat and “fucking garbage plastic” don’t mix well! BMW should be ashamed of their price gouging and then using sub par shampoo bottle plastics art best !! GAYyyy
These things ae mounted to the motor right? I would have mounted them to frame to avoid direct motor vibrations. Those little rubber pieces are not enough if bolted down tight. Plus all that plastic crap in there. Cracks at early age, Germany not the quality they used to be huh. Now German cars no better then any other cars.
Typical bmw!
typican nowadays car
