Geoff made me love a song that I didn't really care for. He was in a decommissioned prison, he rented it out, it's being turned into an algae farm. Go figure. When you think that he did everything with his wife Kathy - wow. When they got to the prison, the folks wanted to know when the rest of his crew was coming. Nope. Just the two of them. Together, they are out of this world. You are allowed to have your opinion, I was glad that he won you over by the end. Voiceplay drops their new one on Friday, it's amazing!
I think the whole thing was a trip! Lot of subtle humor. Especially loved the harmonica and the harmonies at the end. Gotta admit it's glorious seeing all those hot lookin' Geoffs. Love Geoff more all the time.
Yeah, it's different, but I actually like the contrast. It gives the feeling that both versions are about 2 different people: 1 (Cash's) about a remorseful idiot who did something terrible and actually regrets it and the other (Geoff's) being a sociopath who's only sad because he got caught and would gladly do it again if he weren't stuck in his cell.
Geoff and Kathy videoed this on their own. Videoed at Indian River Correctional Institution in Vero Beach Fl. The Prison closed in 2012 and is not active. Easter egg is the numbers on the shirts that spell out the names. As of right now, he has 688,564 views in three days.
I love your reactions and you do try to be honest. Sometimes I think when a person loves a song so much by the original artist, hearing a cover is kind of a shock to the system. I'm glad you took the time and thought through it more. I think Geoff said once that what's the point of doing a cover of a song only to do it exactly the same way as the original artist. I think Geoff does a great job of respecting the original of any of the songs he does, and I have a sneaky feeling that he loves Johnny Cash's music. When you added that clip of Johnny singing, I could see your point, but I also think Geoff was hitting the same type of feeling but doing it a little differently. I love the original and I love Geoff's cover. As I stated in the beginning, I love your reactions. Keep them coming.
I do agree with Sunny. I love your reactions, I watch for them. I was anxious to hear your take on this video. And, surprisingly enough, I felt the same irritation with your reaction as you felt with the video. I only know and love Johnny through his music. Was he the kind of singer who encouraged other young singers...would h have liked this take? Anyway, I do know and love Geoff's work, so to hear a very partial start to your piece was annoying. I get the feeling you had. But like you, I decided to stick with your reaction, and like you, I enjoyed the outcome. I think two ways ..you were giving a gut response to this first part, an honest gut reaction. The other way was to give the video a bit more of your attention before reacting. Doesn't actually affect my still looking for your reactions, because you speak your truth, and that's awesome. And to come back on and walk the first criticism back a bit was equally aweSOME. Keep doing you... I'll be watching...❤
Really appreciate this feedback, honestly considered redoing the reaction because by the end, I felt like I was wrong in the beginning and would likely be called out for it even though I adjusted as I went. I'm glad now that I kept it all and have gotten really positive comments for most of it so thanks!
Thank you so much, everyone's feedback had been so great to read. Learning to trust this audience who watch my reactions to understand where I'm coming from and be patient with my sometimes 'knee-jerk' reactions has been something I've been working on a lot. I try to be honest and fair with my critiques, but I also want to give my first reactions and keep them genuine. I really appreciate so many of you for understanding that and bearing with me! @@valeriebottles1584
Johnny did it as an old man when he sung it. Hence, more gravel. The slower the train the higher the voice. Johnny could have never hit those high notes When the speed picked up the deeper it got. When he goes low some complain that it is gratutious. Now when he goes high to showcase his upper register... Cant win for losing. Geoff, just keep rolling. We see what you are doing and love it.
Well one thing about Jeff he knows how to do it right and he did the same way that Johnny Cash what do that and what's so nice about it is that went he did it back in 1955 he did very flawlessly. And I love that little bass pitch that he does it kind of brings you back to the days when Johnny Cash get the same thing. Do I look for this song to become number one just like it did back in 1968!
I think it's something about Geoff's preference to not go too dark, even when it might be more likely given the lyrics. "I See Fire" is probably the darkest song he's done, and as it's done from the POV of the warriors it is and should be somber.
With Geoff you should always expect the unexpected. :) He is always unpredictable. To be fair, the Cash version tempo is the same., from your clip. And yes Geoff's voice is lighter. The tone is a little lighter. Personally I don't mind that. But then I was never a huge Cash fan. I think that's the difference. My brother is a huge Cash fan and when I shared this with him he just laughed. Each to his own. :) He hired this old decommissed prison for a day. as he mentions in the outro, and he and Kathy were the entire crew on this.
Geoff rented a whole prison for this one. If you let him talk at the end you would have heard him say that. He always gives a small speech at the end of his videos. The numbers on his shirts are the same numbers on the keypad on a phone and spell out each of their names. Jeff, Geoff, Daryl and Jeoph. Kathy's idea. Did you notice the 3 Geoff's on the back balcony? They showed up when he started moving backwards. No purpose. Just onlookers.
Thank you for being honest in your opinion. I get what you're saying. Geoff could have gone more classic on this, but then we wouldn't have the gorgeous harmonies and his beautiful amazing range. Plus, three extra Geoffs in the background! I wonder what their sleeves looked like.
Please please always wait until the credits stop rolling before stopping any of Geoff's or Voice Plays videos. Sometimes they have a message at the end. A lot of times they have a pause or blackout just before the final comment . In this case he explained that he rented out the prison for the day just so he & Kathy could record this song. He & Voice Play always go above & beyond to do their videos. does. Who else but Geoff & Voice Play would do that ?
The song kind of reminds me of Johnny Cash when he first put it out 1955 and then read it on a live version in Folsom prison in 1968 which became number one. I think this updated version of the song will end up being number one just like it did back in 1968!
Thanks for your reaction! If you check the numbers on your phone, you will see that the numbers on their shirts spell out their names (I think Goff was on the landing of the stairs behind them). Yes, the book that the Geoff clone with the glasses is reading is the autobiography of Johnnie Cash. The behind the scenes posted for the patrons of Geoff's channel was incredible as it was just Geoff and Kathy renting a decommissioned prison in Vero Beach (again without AC in 100 plus degrees in Florida). Geoff played the harmonica many years ago when he was working for Universal theme park doing a Blues Brothers show (Geoff had not played for a while but I thought he sounded great too and it was a nice touch in this song).
Geoff had to put his own spin on it there would be no point in just copying Johnny Cash or any other cover. I think you gave a very honest reaction though and I appreciate that. ❤🏴
This was sooo good. I loved all the easter eggs in it as well. The numbers on their shirts are not random. If you look at the numbers on the phone the spell out the Geoff clones name. Also, near the end there are 3 more Geoffs on the second floor. The book Jeff is reading is Johnny Cash's autobiography. Just so much to see. Great reaction!!
I find for me, that the ‘higher’ beginning kind of reminds me of the train whistle before the guitars bring in the ‘clackety-clack’ train sound. I do agree that this is possibly more up-beat, however I don’t actually think the original sounds particularly as somber as the subject might call for either. Personally I think it is the rhythm that does it and Geoff has kept it pretty fast, after that initial , slower start.
Always appreciate an honest opinion! You may not appreciate mine as much - I've never been much of a fan of Johnny Cash (sorry, but true). And never have particularly cared for this song - didn't dislike it really, just didn't like it either. While I enjoyed Geoff's version, it's also not one of my favorites of what I've heard him do. I'm wondering if the end of the song that you seemed to appreciate a little more is because after that first verse, Geoff really didn't go back up into his tenor range for the rest of the song. To me, he stayed in mid/upper-baritone to low bass range after that first verse, and I think I enjoyed it more myself down there.
I always appreciate honesty whether it agrees with my take or not. And yes, I believe your right. The lower register hit my ear a little better for this song in particular.
Actually the recording I've heard was even a little faster or the same tempo as this. Great reaction, we all have our favorite versions. But Geoff always gives himself somewhere to go in his arrangements. The outro explains the filming location and the lack of AC and using a fan explains the floofy hair lol.
I think you were just a bit surprised in the start, expecting a certain approach and getting something else. Such a thing can admittedly throw you a bit. Glad that you started to appreciate it more. I like both versions, Cash original and Geoff's I can harbour warm feelings for both. And you did call it out right, that Daryl was the tough one, who would go low first. All had shirts with numbers on them and the numbers spelled out who was who. L to R Jeff, Geoff, Daryl and Jeoph. Goff wasn't visible, if he wasn't one of the 3 up on the balcony at the end. Kathy is reputed to have said that Goff was a good guy who wouldn't be in prison. I have a sneaky thought he could be a warden instead, as Goff was the supervisor in Way Down, but thats my personal imagination. 😂
I think, "Expectations" happened to you. :) Not that you were 'disappointed'. But you thought of something and you didn't get it. - You know, like "Star Wars VII". Everybody had expectations, and some of them weren't fulfilled. After rewatching it (maybe more than once), it became a better movie. 😆 For me, I had no connection to the song or did ever realize listening to the original (I did, for sure. But just casually, I would say). So I was "a cleanskin" for Geoff's version and I liked it - BUT: Reading the lyrics, it is quite a "happy" version for the "not so happy" songtext. Anyway, I like your reactions and that you say what you think in the very moment. Please keep that as it is! 👌Greetings from Germany!
First rule of holes is when you are in one quit digging. It is okay for you to have your own opinion. Still like your reactions. Cash walked and dressed the part of the outlaw most of his life. never liked his music - too negative. Geoff has taken his own approach to show off his talents and not dwell on the outlaw hero. Glad to hear this song in a upbeat vibe - but the message is still listen to Momma and do right and stay out of prison. Have a great day
No hate for having an opinion, that's what reactions are all about! I still prefer the original myself, but I do like this and I'm glad Geoff didn't just do a clone job with some extra lows thrown in. (Obviously I never expected him to, he's not one to play it too safe.) Good idea to include a clip of Johnny Cash's version for comparison too!
I can't say that I was ever a big Johnny Cash fan. He was okay, but never my favorite. So obviously, I can't relate to your criticism at all. However, I can see where a Johnny Cash fan might share the criticisms that you expressed. I grew up hearing the Johnny Cash original, I have seen Home Free's cover, but in my opinion, Goeff just owned this song.
Just found your channel. I enjoyed your reaction the beauty of music is that all people have differing opinions and are entitled to those opinions. If we all loved the same music well there would only be one genre right? So many people hop on here and give just glorious reactions because of his talent( Geoff is obviously an alien or immortal, no normal human can have that talent!) anyway it’s refreshing to see someone give an honest opinion about the style of the song. I am super happy that it grew on you by the end!!! I think it may be Geoff’s personality to keep things a bit lighter with his covers. Thanks for reading my comment you got a new subscriber here!
Reactors ask us to watch til the end, but they don't watch the videos they react to til the end. They say "put it down in the comments"... But the answer was waiting in the credits the whole time. Do better.
It’s always hard to hear a criticism of something you really enjoy but that’s the fun of music; there’s something out there for everyone. You are always going to be influenced by the original version of a cover song. I never really listened to the Cash version. I’m influenced by the Home Free cover, which (and I say this as a Geoff patron) I actually slightly prefer to Geoff’s version. But I still very much appreciate and like what he did with this! Those were powerful F#1 chest notes he was hitting, which is his lowest sustainable chest note 😊
Yeah, we all have different preferences- I really don’t care much for Home Free’s version, myself. It’s just a bit too far from the original for me. But tthen I really like the ‘train’ sounding bits of the original song. And I find Geoff has really captured that here.
This song is a classic Cash song and while I generally do like Geoff's covers of classic songs I don't really like his version of Folsom Prison Blues. The tone of the song is meant to be somber and Geoff made his cover of it sound the exact opposite. Which while it was his choice to do so, it really does not sound right as far as this song is concerned.

Those low notes are F# 1s in chest.
His lowest note without going into subharmonics.
Yeah, it's different, but I actually like the contrast. Home Free has great covers of this, as well as Ring of Fire. Geoff also does a great cover of Man of Constant Sorrow.

Sometimes it takes a little while for your brain to readjust to the new sounds. Especially if it's a song you loved by the original performer.
Spot on
