    For whatever reason, whenever I record Made in Abyss review audio, my mic experiences technical issues. Cursed stuff. I apologise that the audio quality's sub-par, for this one; genuinely no idea what's wrong with the blasted thing.

    Made in Abyss brings me nothing but pain and misery with no sense of hope or happiness in sight.
    God I love it.

      Oh! Aren't you that guy who makes those really good anime videos? Would be awesome if you made a video about this show, because I think the way it presents its darker element is really cool, somewhat like Madoka Magica.

    You're reviews of Made in Abyss are the ones I look forward to the most. You're calm demeanor and deep vocabulary just bring me on a journey that almost feels like I'm rewatching the show from a new perspective. You just have a way with words that makes everything meaningful.

    My favorite OST's are;
    *"Old Stories"* - Vueko's voice, its the "lullaby" she sings to Irumyuui's children
    *"Transcendence and Hanezeve"* - Well..... Bondrewd...... need i say more?
    *“Reg & His Interference Unit”* - Nyan......nya-nyan.....nya-nyan..
    *"Underground River"* - is what got me into the OST's

    I only just realised the elevator to the 6th layer looks a lot like an eyeball in those distant shots of it? Huh. Thanks for the video!
    Love the point that it's more fairytale-like than the previous season, that really puts something into words that I'd struggled to explain. That kind of whimsical-but-dark story is irresistable to me. If I were to put on my pretentious hat - well, I never take it off - in that light the passing on of Irumyuui's story from Vueko to Faputa at the end takes on the character of eucatastrophe: an unasked but not quite unearned moment of grace and beauty in a story that would otherwise have the brothers Grimm suggesting to rein it in a little.

    Yep, this season might just be my anime of the year. I loved how much darker the whole season felt plus the animation at times felt like I was watching a movie rather than a seasonal show.

    While being concise is certainly a virtue, and i appriciate the non spoiler nature of your reviews, you are such a delight to listen to and your scrips are so snappy that i really find myself longing for a deep dive breaking the details of the show. Great work as always and i can only hope that you will at some point get the recognition for the quality you put out

    Your well-articulated reviews always bring humour and profound perspective to the material, which kinda rolls with the oxymoronic themes you got going in this review.
    Also, I am rewatching this series with friends and it's as you said, I am realizing that some sequences are pretty difficult to stomach. We're gonna get to season 2 soon and although I am sure they're all enjoying it thus far, I am less sure that they would've taken this journey on by themselves. This is a realization I couldn't put to words until I saw this video so thank you for that.

    Great review. Season 3 will take a while I’m afraid. Pretty much all of the manga is now made into anime. So my guess will be at least 3 years befor something else comas along maybe even 5 years who knows. The author isn’t the fastest..

      To be frank, quality over quantity is such a rare gem these days that I don't mind waiting for longer here. I mean, just look at the long running plots of Naruto, where quality drops hard over the years and it becomes tiresome after a certain point. "Die a hero or live long enough to become a villain" is not just an empty slogan.
      I only hope that Made in Abyss won't have the same unfortunate fate as the Berserk, with mangaka leaving this world...there's just so many interesting stories left to be told - be it gruesome, sad or happy...

    In terms of comparable mixes of beauty and horror in fantasy fiction to Made in Abyss, most of the examples that I can think of are actually in prose rather than television or comics, specifically short stories and novels in the sort of Lovecraftian high fantasy movement known as the New Weird represented by authors such as Jeff VanderMeer, China Miéville, Leena Krohn and K.J. Bishop, as well as some specific works by more adventurous science fiction authors of past decades like Samuel R. Delany, Harlan Ellison and Octavia Butler-in particular, the mix of grisly body horror and sincere emotional warmth of Butler's short story "Bloodchild" and the strange sweeping grandeur and horrid violence of Miéville's novel The Scar come to mind. (And of course, Delany wrote an absolutely unhinged transgressive novel in between his vaunted works of speculative fiction which he shelved for something like two decades because it was too freaky to publish in the '70s, which feels relevant.)

    While I feel the plot got a bit weird near the end (Seriously, what even was Wazukyan's plan at the end?) I still really enjoyed this arc of the journey, in its twisted yet still weirdly human depiction of a basically completely alien society. It is rare for any series to present me with something I can confidently say I've never seen anything alike it before

    • @GoodwillWright
      @GoodwillWright Рік тому +4

      Most likely Wazukyan had a goal, but due to no longer receiving visions, he didn't have any idea of the methods to achieve that goal (as I guess they technically already achieved it). And that was the problem. They wanted to keep going down deeper into the Abyss but knew they couldn't because leaving Iruburu would kill them. Living wasn't peaceful. It was more like a limbo or purgatory to them.
      And that's when Faputa came along. A being that could take the value, the memories of all those in the village and continue on down through the Abyss. Wazukyan had many plans but he just kinda went with whatever worked. Would he have used a Cradle of Desire on Riko? Sure, that was one of the plans most likely if the chance arose. But the "plan" that did go through was the completion of Faputa's mission. Ironically Wazukyan is one of the few who was not absorbed by Faputa and therefore perished in the village. But due that souls are an actual thing in Made in Abyss, I guess in a way death in the Abyss is another way to "return" to it.

    banger of a review as always Aaox. Although i thought you would be more upset and mention more about uh, the spoilers. Its more fucked up the more i think about it.
    Also all the mention of rape and borderline child molesting and gore- i wouldnt blame the government for having me already on a list because i said once that i "enjoy" it.

    Great overview/review! It does very well to potentially entice someone to watch while letting them know they aren't exactly in for a good time.
    I loved this season, and I, too, am NOT a body horror/gruesome horror fan. This is the only anime I've ever immediately watched right after watching it, season 2. Then I rewatched the series from start to finish.
    Made in Abyss is one of my top 3 anime. And when someone asks me about my favorite anime, and none have ever heard of Made in Abyss, I tell them how it's wonderful in a variety of ways while also warning them about potential trauma :p
    It's like recommending someone the Evangelion TV series. I enjoy both the TV series and movie series greatly, but the TV series ends with an R rated movie. I don't watch R rated movies anymore, and I haven't in many, many years, so I generally just tell people I love the series but don't watch the R rated movie at The End of Evangelion. It saves a bit of trouble saying things like, "Yeah, if you want to watch The End of Evangelion, you'll probably love it, but only if you're okay with seeing a 14 yr old boy get assaulted by a lady in her 30s determined to teach said boy what making out is like, the same boy masturbate over the comatose body of a 14 yr old friend, and the same boy explode out of the eyeball of a planet-sized representation of yet another naked friend."

    If there's one thig you should know is that there are less than 5 chapters left unadapted. I think it's 3?
    So yeah, a sequel to this season will take years to even begin.
