Backgrounds are amazing but one detail that not everybody notice is the amount of effort that the sound designers had put into crafting a realistc fantasy world. Every single step sound is chosen thinking over the surface material and not a simple mp3 downloaded from a library. I hope anime youtubers remark that aspect as well.
Allan Vs On my first watching of made in abyss, the first thing I noted was the fact they had amazing sound effects. The amount of detail to sound effects, even from when somgs die out and it instantly cuts to the sound of crickets on one episode, is amazing. Just... this entire anime is amazing
Me 2. I think the greatest thing is the sounds. You know an orchestra is good when its barely noticable, yet made so much sense in all of the scenes if you watch closely. The evil industrial tone in the background of a sort of ambient and natural soundtrack really stood out.
Cypher Caliban it doesn't have to even go too far though. I mean if they leave it off before they head to the fifth layer then I think that'd be enough. I loved the arc introducing nanachi
Knight Warrior Aye, I watched the entire series up to the most recent episode... If it can keep up this quality, it WILL be up their with my favorite shows of all time...
Call Me Puzzle really? I'm sure every regular anime fan is watching this (well not all, but a majority, including me) and getting really good critical reception and reviews, I know most of the anime reviewers that I sub to have been talking about it....
made in the abyss is under some of the most abysmal anime airing this season. ergo why I said it deserves more popularity than it's current number 10 spot. I don't understand how saying that makes me a causal faggit, but ok.
Call Me Puzzle It's ninth (VEG doesn't count) and has more than 70k people watching it even though the show's not even halfway over. It'll break 100k by the time it's done, and maybe even more.
With so many new animation schools taught by professionals you would think the community would grow bigger than shrink with all the deaths in the industry and low pay. I just wish there was animation studios like these in the states. Disney isn't a dream job for me. I want something that focuses on 2D animation such as these studios. Taught by people who I know from the industry. Unlike how we animate storyboards only to be sent to Korea to do the real animating. I know why it's done that way i just wish there was a way to get that level of education and jobs here in the states. Instead of going to a college to do general ed and THEN do things towards our career. A career you aren't guaranteed. Taught by teachers who never set foot in the industry or only have for a short time in their life. I wish animation such as this was more worldwide than a niche of some sort. Like any film or movie.
Well it at starts with you animating for yourself. I don't think that you would like to animate all the stuff which is done in low-pay countries, since there is no fun in it its just tedious work.
Im so glad you did this on Made In Abyss, i read the manga and feared the anime wouldn't get enough attention. When i read the manga the world building was what got me so interested and excited for this project, its so beautiful and detailed! I was so happy to see the anime turned out just as beautiful if not more. This video was so interesting, thank you for making it!
yeah I got a lot of ghibli vibes from both the manga and anime. this was so beautifully put to together... I honestly think the incinerator scenes from the manga were somehow even better though!
In my opinion "Made in Abyss" world is way more interesting and believable than any of Ghibli's world when it comes to fantasy theme. The way it was built and made is very thoughtful. Everything seems to have it's own function and reason. The world of "made in abyss" is its own entity, not just a background for the story of the characters. It's like the real world in that sense, it affects and manipulates all that lives in it, just like the real world do to us and other living being. In Ghibli's works (especially when Miyazaki in charge) the world sure looks beautiful and realistic, but yes that just it, it stop right there, look beautiful and realistic, but doesn't feel amazing and real. And that what happen when the director who has lower skill cap than the specialized guy has too much power over their works. in short, Ghibli's way of building world is make the environment for the sake of the characters in it. While in "Made in Abyss", it's the world that gives birth to the characters.
Yes, Yes, Yes, YES!!!!!!! omfg, thank you this Anime deserves so much attention AOTS, one of the best Anime of this year thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LegendaryFrosty look up the studio in charge ofthe backgrounds for grimgar and check if the head died. As far as I know the studio closed down(?) after he died. my source is coming from other peoples comments who appreciated the bg for grimgar aswell. I might be wrong though
I dearly loved the experience of watching this show. The heart in the characters, who by the way are the perfect archetypes for this particular anime. The darker ideas which mesh so well with the contrast with the environment. The depth in everything, from the creatures and plantlife of the world to the design of the abyss itself. Every mystery. I just want to see season 2 already.
I just watched Nausicaä of the valley of the wind and was thinking about how it felt really similar to Made in Abyss then I go on UA-cam and find this in my recommended wth
You introduce it so deeply that I can clearly know the feelings is real!!! When I was sawing Made in abyss I think I'm watching Miyazaki Hayao's movies!
It's gonna be fun to see how they handle the Chalice of Giants (layer/stratum 4), and the extremely varied and bizarre geography of layer/stratum 6 (should Inspired return to work on a potential 2nd season once the manga makes it a bit further).
Great work on this one. It's nice to have a name and face to put behind all the gorgeous backgrounds I've been enjoying each week. And yes, more people definitely should be watching Made in Abyss. The backgrounds really enhance the world building and lore of the show and make it quite the adventure to watch.
12:35 - Holy crap! It is Austin Hardwicke, the guy that animated most of Penny's scenes in RWBY, including her fight scenes! *Fun fact:* He insisted on working into Christmas to finish animating Penny and the PvP fight: ua-cam.com/video/lu8EcnFZKP0/v-deo.htmlm38s And here's the video of him at the studio while Burnie and his family play laser tag: ua-cam.com/video/FBjKtZMst9w/v-deo.htmlm20s
Thank you so much for making this video Canipa Effect! This is an amazing show and I've been wondering since the first episode just how the production value was so good.
I'm learning how to draw and I'm pausing the video every 2 sec and think "Wow!" at all the graphics I'm seeing, it's just amazing, when you try to reproduce something you really can understand how hard it is to make it in the first place.
Me throughout the entire video... "Yes....YES!" The world feels alive, such a talented person! I am so glad he got on board! My first animations I ever watched were My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's delivery service, and Nausicca of the Valley! I very much enjoyed Howl's moving castle and Spirited away as well! The worlds are so vibrant, that I feel myself transported into them. As soon as I saw that Masuyama was the background director, I literally squealed. So happy :)
Increíble video sobre una de mis series favoritas, tanto en anime como manga. Siempre he admirado la animación, ambientación y banda sonora que le dieron a la serie. PD: muchas gracias por los subs en español, ayuda a tener mayor difusión
This show is a match made in heaven, amazing source material to work with, one of the best background artists in japan, with some amazing musical artists from Australia
I really like the change of pace to talking about backgrounds. Though the animator spotlights are nice, the current show studio spotlights have gotten stale for me as the narrative you are telling about the studios is limited to being told around the show running in that season and to the few episodes of that show that have aired at the time of writing. I think you have done enough to get people interested in animation in anime, so I would think getting people into other aspects of the industry would be nice. If I could suggest a topic, I would ask for spotlight on good producers as organizers could be understated in importance in many mediums. (This would be probably really hard to research though) TL;DR I want more variety from your content, in what you promote fans to pay attention to in anime.
After watching a few episodes I knew there was something amazing going on in the background... literally. I was amazed at the background, and I was annoyed I didn't see it earlier.
are you kidding? there is a labor of love .. then there is a heartfelt blowjob .. then there is this most faithful adaptation of any fiction i have ever seen. if you wanna tell folks to "reed da mohngah", just casually mention that season 2's content is already there.
One suggestion on future video is to put up text nametag whenever a key player is being mentioned, makes it easier to keep track of who you are talking about especially when you jump into a series of names. (Preferably with Kanji as well for those who like to search through credit to read the names)
9:07 That's really true, at first I was thinking all those artists making more realistic are better but then I knew I was wrong, the feel is better than just the graphics.
Never Expected somebody from Ghibli to work on this, I just thought they were goinng to have an amazing team when I heard that the storytelling and pacing was directed from the guy of Monster, which is my favourite anime.. I care more about storytelling (depending on genre cause you cant expect high class story from a ecchi/harem anime most of the time that focus mainly on fanservice)
I feel I must seek out this anime the backgrounds and movements feel so beautiful, like you say, but I also am so distracted by the cases of ginormous pimples that seem to afflict the upper cheeks of girls in some of these modern anime. Ok. I get that its supposed to look like rosy cheeks but when they put that specular highlight it feels less like a glossy finish (which in itself is a strange goal for what is supposed to look like natural skin and not porslain dolls) and more like puss-filled pimples ready to burst at any moment. Or is it just me that is so used to my own badly cared for face-skin that equates those characteristics with these afflictions?
Literally the ONLY negative thing I can come up with about this show is pacing. When you consider that Riko and Reg descended 5 levels into hell in just 13 episodes, it just can't help but feel rushed. Aside from that, though, it is damn near flawless.
I swear, the somewhat slow pacing for the anime would work perfectly if only it had a total of 2 cours instead of 1. Like, it's pretty clear that they only plan to cover until when Nanachi joins Riko and Reg and they leave her hideout, but it's seriously only scratching the surface of the manga's story. I personally find that the pacing is good since they really could have just decided to speed through the chapters and miss the worldbuilding, but instead they're respecting the manga by keeping a slower, steady pace. I've read the manga since the first few chapters came out years ago, but I can understand how viewers feel about the story in the anime so far; they hype up Riko and Reg's descent into the abyss for 3 episodes, only to have them experience only one really dangerous event, and also be stuck in Ozen's hideout, more than halfway through the season. Not to mention that the more "shocking" events will pick up in 2 episodes (episode 9) which is like 3/4ths through the season, unfortunately. I really, really hope they announce another cour in the future, but knowing the studio, I highly doubt it would happen, especially considering the very low BD/DVD sales it'll most likely have :((
NHK does this every week with Imagine-nation and Anime Supernova. I recommend checking them out. Anime Supernova: www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/vod/anime/ Imagine-nation: www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/vod/imagine/
I love Kevin Penkin's score so much! He's a fan of The Canipa Effect as well!
Allan Vs On my first watching of made in abyss, the first thing I noted was the fact they had amazing sound effects. The amount of detail to sound effects, even from when somgs die out and it instantly cuts to the sound of crickets on one episode, is amazing. Just... this entire anime is amazing
Yeah thats what I'm talking about! It's not commun for me to notice that aspect in a anime but this one really made something special to achieve that.
And the soundtrack is amazing, too.
Me 2. I think the greatest thing is the sounds. You know an orchestra is good when its barely noticable, yet made so much sense in all of the scenes if you watch closely. The evil industrial tone in the background of a sort of ambient and natural soundtrack really stood out.
I will die in agony if this show won't have a sequel.
AhmedHan or rather you won’t die and will remain in agony like Mitty :((
It has been announced already boi. When the VA heard this they burst into tears. Im ready
Season 2 soon
It will be continued with a movie jan 2020!!
Camrip+subs now exist
Made in abyss is the best anime this year so far for me.
Knight Warrior it probably will depending on how much of the manga they cover...
But there's also Owarimonogatari 2 that I forgot about. So maybe not.
Konkey Dong with only one cour confirmed, we can only hope a season 2 Is confirmed as soon as possible.
Cypher Caliban it doesn't have to even go too far though. I mean if they leave it off before they head to the fifth layer then I think that'd be enough. I loved the arc introducing nanachi
eccentric family 2? goemon? ACCA?
Knight Warrior
Aye, I watched the entire series up to the most recent episode...
If it can keep up this quality, it WILL be up their with my favorite shows of all time...
props to you for making this video on made in abyss. this anime needs way more attention than what it's currently getting
Call Me Puzzle really? I'm sure every regular anime fan is watching this (well not all, but a majority, including me) and getting really good critical reception and reviews, I know most of the anime reviewers that I sub to have been talking about it....
then why is it only number 10 on myanimelist's summer 2017 popularity boards?
made in the abyss is under some of the most abysmal anime airing this season. ergo why I said it deserves more popularity than it's current number 10 spot. I don't understand how saying that makes me a causal faggit, but ok.
Call Me Puzzle It's ninth (VEG doesn't count) and has more than 70k people watching it even though the show's not even halfway over. It'll break 100k by the time it's done, and maybe even more.
that's good an all. I just wanna made in abyss be the most popular anime of the season.
No wonder Made In Abyss reminded me of Studio Ghibli movies. :D
Royal Crustle ikr
Royal Crustle
I know right? I rember I watched Spirited Away a full decade ago, and all I can rember about it WAS the backgrounds. Funny huh?
When I saw the first episode I told my self : Am I watching a remake of the castle in the sky? :o
As i heared the first Soundtrack i needed to google if it is really not made by Ghibli.
bob ross would be proud of this level of backgrounds
Drgig Garcia "Happy little-"

Narathae are just little happy accidents
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS lol

That song from the first episode was so good.
Last song on episode 13 was even better ;)
That last song really encapsulates what the series is all about: adventurous, triumphant, tragic...it gets me every time
As a background artist and enthusiast, this video made me so happy! Thanks for trying out a new topic.
Thanks for watching! I just saw your profile and absolutely love your work!!

make you on path then... but its not easy.

I fallen in love with the story and the background. This show is perfect
I hope you are enjoying the tweets Masuyama has been posting about Made in Abyss background art, the first moment I saw them I remembered this video.

You should take a look at the background of Hai to gensou no Grimgar, the background there is made with aquarelle.
LegendaryFrosty I heard the art director died already
Where have you heard that? Because i couldn't find it anywhere.
LegendaryFrosty look up the studio in charge ofthe backgrounds for grimgar and check if the head died. As far as I know the studio closed down(?) after he died. my source is coming from other peoples comments who appreciated the bg for grimgar aswell. I might be wrong though
Ah ye, i found the source: goboiano.com/grimgar-of-fantasy-and-ash-background-art-studio-to-close-due-to-directors-health/ It seems indeed true T-T

Ok. Made in Abyss looks beautiful. I really wanna watch it. Too bad it's only on amazon prime...
If it's on Amazon, it gives you a reason to pirate
if there are non legal methods to watch it i dont really see why not pirate
RWDS Which is pirating.
I watched it on kawiifu and the manga on 4chan
its available on crunchyroll.
"there are some weird moments" Thats putting it lightly
Can't like this enough! Made in Abyss is one of the most beautiful and immersive anime I've seen in a while
It's gonna be fun to see how they handle the Chalice of Giants (layer/stratum 4), and the extremely varied and bizarre geography of layer/stratum 6 (should Inspired return to work on a potential 2nd season once the manga makes it a bit further).

Made in abyss world is absolutely what the dark continent in HXH should look like or even better imo
After watching a few episodes I knew there was something amazing going on in the background... literally.
I was amazed at the background, and I was annoyed I didn't see it earlier.
Great to have you posting vids again! keep them coming! great break down as always.
Such an nice review! Thanks for covering one of the best anime backgrounds i have ever seen, also an underrared anime

Made in abyss could save the dignity of anime.

I think I stumbled upon concept art for this years and years ago! Damn it, Made in Abyss just looks like the anime I like!
I really love Made In Abyss manga and I love the way that they made the anime
the mangaka dont get praise here?
are you kidding? there is a labor of love .. then there is a heartfelt blowjob .. then there is this most faithful adaptation of any fiction i have ever seen.
if you wanna tell folks to "reed da mohngah", just casually mention that season 2's content is already there.
lol what XD.. never mind!
the mangaka kinda suck cos he cant draw panels and action scene... hes really good with concept design, character and stationary enviroment though
he cant draw ACTION SCENE. His still-shots are amazing, so is his background art. but his art for actin sequences are confusing.
stop defending his lack of professional skill with paneling and sequence art. He is a newbie mangaka and these are hard to do.
Its studio ghibli but +16/18
Such an incredible anime with some very... strange moments. Great video, love your content!
fantastic video, I absolutely loved it. Just wait until I get a job imma patreon you so hard
One suggestion on future video is to put up text nametag whenever a key player is being mentioned, makes it easier to keep track of who you are talking about especially when you jump into a series of names. (Preferably with Kanji as well for those who like to search through credit to read the names)
When the background art is this gorgeous i honestly don't care whatever shit happens in the story, it's just too beautiful to watch
The adventure will return next year. Prepare to see dreams come truth, and abandon hope.
absolutely amazing
thank you for the video
I want a Nino kuni anime
9:07 That's really true, at first I was thinking all those artists making more realistic are better but then I knew I was wrong, the feel is better than just the graphics.
#CARTRIDGES
I wonder if they will follow the manga faithfully or if they have to censor some things because of how dark and gritty it's going to get.

hope not, i think those are the essence of this series.

Awesome video, love this show so far best anime of the year.
The passion and respect you give to the people that work on anime is great to see. You're honestly becoming one of my favorite youtubers.
Your intro is awesome
I was holding off on watching Made in Abyss. This video has made me rethink that choice. Great video.
This video got me into Made in Abyss. This video changed my life. 🙃
Just spotted a Hebikera ( from Nausicaa ) in the first episode of season 2 !

It does look like an interesting series.

One of the best anime of the year.

Literally the ONLY negative thing I can come up with about this show is pacing. When you consider that Riko and Reg descended 5 levels into hell in just 13 episodes, it just can't help but feel rushed.
Aside from that, though, it is damn near flawless.
i risk death from waiting the next episode everytime i watch an episode od made in abbys
It may be just me but who else gets an Oban Star Racers(Remember that show) vibe from this show's art style?
For a similar level of a great background animation check " Oban Star Racers"
This show make the voice acter of the main characters cried after he heard that there is season 2 coming
4:27 thats not oil, thats acquarelle. But dude, AMAZING video
i give up i'm subscribing
I wonder if they took the treeline effect into consideration then making the highest level of their world
Jesus christ i wish i could actually watch it

Just pirate it for goodness sake! You don’t have to forgo watching such an amazing anime just because you can’t afford it.
Wow, a meganebu mention. I was unaware there were more than 10 people who knew about that anime ;P

*gasp* I came here for the thumbnail.
