That 3rd riff after the galloping riff in Raining Blood is a lot harder than people think because you have to shift up and down the fretboard while playing one part involving the middle finger and the other involving the ring finger of your fretting hand in order to stay in the correct key. Also, it's at a tempo of about 220bpm. It requires speed and dexterity. I can only play it at ½ the speed because of the finnger dexterity required. I know because the metronome is at 110 when I start to feel the ache before making mistakes.
I never thought I'd see the day Watchmojo would mention Atheist. I'm really happy about that, yet I remember Mother Man not being as hard to learn as Piece Of Time, which really tested my ear as well as my fingers. Also, if you want difficulty, Cynic has some songs that are as beautiful as they are challenging
Angel of Death I agree with. Raining Blood certainly for most reaction videos I’ve seen is the intro to the band and there is nothing wrong with it. I find Angel of Death is more chaotic throughout the entire song though. And I would also say War Ensemble would work better than Raining Blood.
Wow, an actually decent metal list for once. It's rare to see SYL or Death on anything WM puts out, but they're finally on a well-chosen list. No real arguments for the bands that were picked, but there's definitely room for a version 2 of the video. Necrophagist, Iron Maiden, Ignominious Incarceration, Onslaught, and Gorod all deserve to have some entries spotlighted. Edit: To everyone whining, this should be interpreted as "Hardest Riffs to Play", not "heaviest to listen to", that's why Pantera's stuff got left off. Sure, they iconic and heavy, but practice for a few minutes and you can play anything dimebag did. He wrote some awesome stuff, but complex his riffs aren't.
I agree that Death's music is complex, but I'd put Atheist's Unquestionable Presence at the top of this list - I'm so happy I came across this masterpiece of an album a few years ago. I would also consider putting some of the Testament's riffs from The Legacy album on this list.
Disagree. Unqestionable presence may be technically superior, but Chuck managed to mix technical sound with awesome catchiness, best seen on Chucks solo after the pentatonic climb after first chorus. Top 3 metal solo. Also if ur interested in jazzdeath, try out Cynic-focus album. They have their own, very distinguished take on the genre with highly ethereal and spiritually charged sound mixed with death metal chops and ocasional growls. Awesome stuff.
Totally! Atheist is a brilliant band and man Alex Skolnick is a beast on guitar. Saw Testament live and just couldn't keep my eyes from his lightning speed playing
You could pretty much put any Pantera track from Vulgar Display Of Power....but when you open with Mouth For War....you know the album is going to be killer
I'll go by decade since its hard to rank favorite riffs. 70s~ Into the Void by Black Sabbath-main riff 80s~ Disposable Heroes by Metallica-bridge riff 90s~ Davidian by Machine Head- breakdown 2000s~ Blackbird by Alter Bridge- Intro clean riff 2010s~ Silvera by Gojira- intro riff. 2020s (so far)~ In the Court of the Dragon by Trivium- Chorus riffs These were my picks since its hard to simply choose one riff.
Fight Fire With Fire might be the hammer, but Ride the Lightning was an anvil. The best one-two punch opener since Iron Maiden's Aces High/2 Minutes to Midnight on Powerslave ♥
I am glad that they used Fight Fire With Fire as the hardest Metallica riff. Idk if it is definitively, but its nice to see them not just putting Master of Puppets. Although id say Dyers Eve may be a little bit harder, but not by much though.
Tbh FFWF is just fast, not hard. If you can keep up the speed, it's pretty easy. I'd say Blackened is way more complicated, considering the downpicking, switching between strings and it's also fast. Dyers Eve is also like FFWF, fast alternate picking, but nothing much complicated.
Good to see an actual metalhead on Watchmojo 😂 Also, I'm surprised Dillinger Escape Plan's 43% burned wasn't on the list, but then I'm not a guitarist so maybe it's not as tricky as it sounds (to me).
Im shocked this channel turned me on to a band I didnt know...Revocation. From Boston, from America and seems like they kick ass? Pfffft....let's goooooo.
I watched the whole video… still don’t know if this was about the ‘most complicated’ or the ‘heaviest’, riffs in metal. (I don’t think Watch Mojo knows either.)
Many of these bands I’ve never heard of! I like metal but I don’t do that screaming death metal!! Of all the metal bands I like Pantera is my absolute favorite!! Of course I like Metallica, Megadeth, White Zombie, Rob Zombie, Hatebreed, Slipknot, Fear Factory, Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, Ozzy, Hellyeah, stuff like that
Wow, Im actually kind of impressed, Mojo. Personally I would've included Lamb of God or Pantera in there somewhere, but otherwise this is a fairly solid list.
No offense to Revocation and Atheist, but they aren't big enough to deserve a spot on a list like this. This comes off more like some dude's list of favorites than an attempt at an All Time list.
FINALLY, a good Metal Top 10 list by Watchmojo. Something that doesn't have Metallica or Black Sabbath anywhere near the top 5. Also, huge props for them putting some pretty obscure metal bands on the list and finally paying attention to the legendary Fear Factory. However, a list like this just doesn't seem complete without including Pantera. I don't know how that was missed, seeing as how Watchmojo generally keeps Pantera in mind for Metal lists.
Really should use better descriptions for this kind of material. Heaviest or most difficult 🤔, riffs or song . Just a suggestion. All these bands are pretty awesome in their own way
Good enough picks. Especially Stream of Conciousness. The displayed riff is so hard to play with normal sized hands. Even found out a new band from your video, something that havent happened since 2015. Shame the Strapping Young Lad sucks to me.
Which riff do you think is hard on Recipe for hate? It's probably one of the easiest Megadeth songs rhythmwise. Take a look at Poison Was The Cure and come back later

You made a mistake on the Slayer song. It’s “Reign In Blood”, not “Raining Blood”.
Not quite.
The album is called Reign in Blood, the song Raining Blood.

more like Starter pack Slayer...
It starts with Tom’s scream from hell!!! LOL
Chuck rolling in his grave at thr pronunciations of his last name 😂
The band Necrophagist is definitely missing from this list

The main riff from Black Sabbath's "Wheels of Confusion" (Vol. IV) is the One Riff to rule them all.
Tony Iommi is the master of the Riff
Isn't the hardest part from Raining blood the spiderwalk riff? Cool list. Thanks for showing me Revocation, I didn't know these guys. They are awesome.
Check out Aborted and Bloodbath, as well.
Pretty good list, I thought it was going to be a bunch of mainstream stuff but you did good, also kudos for mentioning Atheist!!!

Pretty much anything from the Phil era. Vulgar is such a perfect album haha
"Dave Mustaine and a revolving line of guitarists"... Lol 😂

Dimebag?
The GOAT
The guitar solo in Cowboys From Hell is HEAVEN!!!!

I'll go by decade since its hard to rank favorite riffs.
70s~ Into the Void by Black Sabbath-main riff
80s~ Disposable Heroes by Metallica-bridge riff
90s~ Davidian by Machine Head- breakdown
2000s~ Blackbird by Alter Bridge- Intro clean riff
2010s~ Silvera by Gojira- intro riff.
2020s (so far)~ In the Court of the Dragon by Trivium- Chorus riffs
These were my picks since its hard to simply choose one riff.
Davidian. That's an underrated song right there.
Like for Davidian and Trivium
All these songs i really like.
I can't believe a list like this would not mention Pantera or the amazing abilities of Dimebag Darrell

The thing abt the stream of consciousness riff is that if u have small hands, this riff is probably hell

have yall ever heard of Gojira and Nevermore? because them alone would dominate this list
The lack of Gojira saddens me.
Nevermore would be all 10, and that’s just one of their albums!
My favorite is a tie between Korn, Blind or Pantera, 5 minutes alone.
I love the rifting in I’m Broken!!!
Same
That’s RIFFING
bro you forgot a super difficult riff with absurd speed "allison hell" by annihilator the riff before the acoustic guitar is crazy
Excellent.

Totally a drum masterpiece
Also - no dimebag ?
25% of DT and Tool riffs are more difficult than half of this list, also I would guess that the tapping riff in “The Stage” is also very difficult.
While listening I’m hoping to hear Shock by Fear Factory!!
Difficult challenge: Try not to headbang watching this video.
Where is Painkiller?
Wheres the Dillinger Escape Plan?
i'll be waiting for Stevie T. and Nik Nocturnal react/thrashing after this vid..
Tornado of souls over Holy Wars? Lol okay.
Tornado is a bit more complicated, but I'd rather chose Lucretia then Tornado. But in general, PWTC has the hardest Megadeth riff
So many difficult riffs to choose from and they go with one of the easiest lol
Surprised to see no maiden
Wow, Im actually kind of impressed, Mojo. Personally I would've included Lamb of God or Pantera in there somewhere, but otherwise this is a fairly solid list.
I'm not sure what band that is at 0:10 but I know it's NOT Dream Theater
Great list, though I was really expecting Cowboys From Hell to be on here
Can’t deny the riffing from A New Level
Would of added Sabbath, Maiden and Pantera
These guys have never heard Demolition Hammer. Any one could label this as a top done by a poser. But there are some decent songs here.
