@@JessicaGarrity can you do a video on setting up margins, grids, type baseline how you would approach on a real client book project. That will help me even further..
Thank you so much! I didn't really understand how to use the styles at first, and my professor isn't the best at explaining it, so this is a godsend! You sound so friendly too!
This was super useful. First time picking up InDesign and this was the perfect tutorial on Paragraph Styles. Was able to get up and running in 15 minutes.
This was incredibly helpful, and your voice was super relaxing! Thank you for a straightforward guide that helps ground a firm understanding of this topic :)
@@JessicaGarrity I'm so glad, you're welcome! This was a game-changer and incredibly helped the efficiency of developing a 30+ page client project I did last month, and I'm so thankful for a good baseline of good tools to use moving forward. So thanks! :)
This is a really nicely done talk through of the two methods and the interaction between them. Very neatly stayed out of the weeds while focussing clearly on the fundamentals.
I usually prefer written text over videos but I could not grasp paragraph vs character styles for some reason. You explained it very clearly and now I finally get it! The trick that helped the most is how you showed what happens when you select part of a text and changed the paragraph style vs the character style. Keep up the good work & you have a new sub!
Super easy to follow! After years of Ps work and being Id Intolerant I decided to wise up and learn the program. Wow! Game-changing for the work I have to do. Great video!

Jessica, this was extremely helpful for my Adv printing class using style sheets. Your content and delivery were just what I was looking for. I will subscribe and seek out other videos from you as a result.
Very clear, thank you very much! I liked that you sounded like you were laughing. Would prefer a closer view, as I am viewing on the laptop, but it still works. Maybe better on a larger screen.
Thank you very much for a very useful video. Please tell me if there is a way to change the text size only for the footnotes, taking in account that footnotes have italic, bold and regular text. Thank you!
Haha thank you! I am a huge nerd when it comes to layout and formatting, and get way too excited about it lol. I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
This is a very nice and clear explanation! I already knew how to use the Paragraph Style feature, but I wasn't so sure about the Character Style because I don't really use InDesign like a pro. Hello Jessica, Your information in how to make style sheets is invaluable! I love them! A Question though... How do you make your cursor have the Highlighted Yellow Circle around it? I am legally blind and that feature would benefit me greatly!!
I am so glad you found it helpful! I’m using software to add the yellow circle in as a video effect, so unfortunately that wouldn’t work for you :/ but there are other ways! Are you on a Mac? If so, this might help: “To change these preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, click Display, then click Cursor. Quickly move your finger on the trackpad or quickly move the mouse to temporarily enlarge the pointer so you can find it.”
Hi Jessica, your video was very helpful, I was wondering if you were able to help me on a particular InDesign issue. I'm currently stuck on how to delete character and paragraph styles that I'm not using anyone. I'm looking at obvious ways to do it, but to no prevail, nothing is working.
Hi Terry! First, click out of any text boxes/frames. Then, go into the paragraph styles panel, click on the paragraph style you'd like to remove, then click the little "delete" icon in the bottom corner of the panel. Hope this helps!
Thanks, but how do you get the paragraph style to rect to a .csv given to you by a client where you want all their tabs or hard returns to then tell your paragraph style to make, say, the title or first line bold color and second line to be regular weight black or whatever?
Thank you Jessia. My question is, how do I change a paragraph style for just one paragraph of the entire text to be bold and with a drop cap so that not all paragraphs also change?
Part of my job is making tutorials and you nailed it. I've watched 4 different tutorials try to explain the plus sign next to a paragraph style and yours was the clearest explanation. Thank you for this straight-forward and thorough lesson. I do have a question; I made some paragraph styles and they seem to be working but if I create a different sized text box and add the text, it works just fine...until I apply the paragraph style. Then the text vanishes and the plus sign shows up on the text box, indicating that there's text missing in the box. I'm so confused. P.S. You have an awesome voice! You could be a voice actor! You also have a new Subscriber! Thanks again!
