    I usually prefer written text over videos but I could not grasp paragraph vs character styles for some reason. You explained it very clearly and now I finally get it! The trick that helped the most is how you showed what happens when you select part of a text and changed the paragraph style vs the character style. Keep up the good work & you have a new sub!

    This is a very nice and clear explanation!
    I already knew how to use the Paragraph Style feature, but I wasn't so sure about the Character Style because I don't really use InDesign like a pro.
    Anyway, at some point during the video, you said something like "This is the paragraph style, but what about the character style?", and then I saw the light and suddenly I knew how to apply the character style haha.
    It was a very cool thing for my brain =P
    Thanks for sharing!!!
    Great tutorial.
    Cheers!!!

    Hello Jessica, Your information in how to make style sheets is invaluable! I love them! A Question though... How do you make your cursor have the Highlighted Yellow Circle around it? I am legally blind and that feature would benefit me greatly!!

    • @JessicaGarrity
      @JessicaGarrity  4 роки тому

      I am so glad you found it helpful! I’m using software to add the yellow circle in as a video effect, so unfortunately that wouldn’t work for you :/ but there are other ways! Are you on a Mac? If so, this might help:
      “To change these preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, click Display, then click Cursor. Quickly move your finger on the trackpad or quickly move the mouse to temporarily enlarge the pointer so you can find it.”

    • @JessicaGarrity
      @JessicaGarrity  4 роки тому

      Hi Terry! First, click out of any text boxes/frames. Then, go into the paragraph styles panel, click on the paragraph style you'd like to remove, then click the little "delete" icon in the bottom corner of the panel. Hope this helps!

    Thanks, but how do you get the paragraph style to rect to a .csv given to you by a client where you want all their tabs or hard returns to then tell your paragraph style to make, say, the title or first line bold color and second line to be regular weight black or whatever?

    Thank you Jessia. My question is, how do I change a paragraph style for just one paragraph of the entire text to be bold and with a drop cap so that not all paragraphs also change?

  • @wintermoongames

    Part of my job is making tutorials and you nailed it. I've watched 4 different tutorials try to explain the plus sign next to a paragraph style and yours was the clearest explanation. Thank you for this straight-forward and thorough lesson. I do have a question; I made some paragraph styles and they seem to be working but if I create a different sized text box and add the text, it works just fine...until I apply the paragraph style. Then the text vanishes and the plus sign shows up on the text box, indicating that there's text missing in the box. I'm so confused.
    P.S. You have an awesome voice! You could be a voice actor! You also have a new Subscriber! Thanks again!

      Wow, those are some great compliments! Thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it!
      Any chance you could send a video/screen capture of the issue you're running into? That would help me troubleshoot what's causing your text to vanish

    Is it somehow possible to make something like paragraph styles but already with title and body in one? For example if I have some "text box" consisting of a title and a body can I aply style to that?

    • @JessicaGarrity
      @JessicaGarrity  4 місяці тому

      Yes, you can! You can create nested styles, which allow styles to build upon one another with advanced settings. I will try to make a video on this if I make the time!

      The styles can be applied on all of the pages in your document, there is no limit. Even if it's over a hundred pages, it will work on all

    Does anyone know of a way to use all new default styles on old docs with out having to manually import new styles every time? We are always having to open old documents and this is a pain. So basically how to change the old document styles to new default indesign styles

      Hi Chris! Yes, depending on how you export the ebook. It won't be read in order unfortunately. The exported PDF must be tagged, with the "Use Structure for Tab Order" option. Maybe I can do another video on this

    What if the font is missing? Would it still work without it?

    • @JessicaGarrity
      @JessicaGarrity  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Bri! Yes you can still use styles. But it’s always recommended to repair all missing fonts before continuing to work on a document

    • @tigerf10
      @tigerf10 3 роки тому

      @@JessicaGarrity thank you! So if I were to open a file with the missing fonts but there's already styles made with those fonts that are missing, there wouldn't be a problem with print? Asking because I'm in a pickel at my job 😅

    • @JessicaGarrity
      @JessicaGarrity  3 роки тому +1

      @@tigerf10 Unfortunately missing fonts are at very high risk with causing print issues (regardless of paragraph/character styles). Sometimes a different font will be substituted by the system, or the missing font can't properly be recovered/displayed and causes print issues as a result. I'd recommend trying to install and relink the missing font if possible, or replace it and thoroughly proof the document to ensure any unpleasant surprises when it comes time to print
