Would love to see a Video on the butcher steers. How long you feed them, what weight you try to get them too and the process of how much you charge and do you make more on those than stockyard calves?
I keep telling them to not get on the trailer but to no avail.....lol Some pretty good looking cow and very little mud on them. You did a great job raising them.
Hey Tyler, came across your videos recently and like your style. Have a similar grass to beef operation here in Ireland. Different set up and problems but same cows. Best of luck with what you do.
Thanks Jacky for all the kind words man. Last weeks market report was ok for feeders but pretty bad for butcher cows. Probably more of the same at this sale. Fingers crossed! Thanks for watching!
My name is Pete, pic is of my wife. I always enjoy spending time with you on FTR. I’d love to know how you made out this year?! Also if you could explain why you keep 4 butcher steers each year would be appreciated.

Awesome video and wish my dad did it the way you do. He takes all the calfs and old cows to the sale barn then buys his replacement heifers at the sale. He then brings them home and they spend a week in the corral to make sure their not sick.
@@farmertylerranch4399 IDK he just dose things his way. I give him ideas all the time and he just says its worked for him all these years so why change.
Very true! I’m not sure I’d recommend goats unless you have a reliable market for them or you want the meat/milk for yourself. Goats require a VERY good fence, they just love to break out! Chickens are good because the initial investment is low and it’s easy to sell eggs or meat. But not very profitable per bird. Pigs are good, relatively low investment, predictable feed out, and you can make good money per head. Good luck! Any other questions I’m glad to try to help!
Good video! I feel the same way about videoing in public! Seems like a long ways from the sale barn we are lucky to have so many in our area, which can also be a disadvantage.
Thanks Jesse. There used to be a sale barn about 20 minutes from me that was very convenient. Then some jerk sued them because they weren’t up to code on handicap accessibility so they just closed down. Welcome to California!! Oh well we make it work. Thanks for watching!
Thank you BCDFW! I’m sure the butcher cow won’t bring much but feeder calf prices have been ok so we’ll just have to wait and see. Keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks for watching!
Looking to get cows through the spring-fall then sell in the winter because I dont have the equipment to feed. How would you go about doing this and trying to turn a profit? Never had cows learning a lot from your channel thanks
Looks like you chose 6 nice looking heifers to keep back & 4 nice steers to butcher. Too bad to hear about #31but, that's just part of the farming/ranching thing. Hope you did well at the market in the end. Thanks for the ride along. Stay safe.
Thank you Crslyrn. Yeah that’s the way things go sometimes but I actually did get a check for her (was afraid I might get a bill!) so that’s about as good as I could have hoped for in that situation. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video!
When I get a heifer calf from a mom I like I put the ear tag in the left ear. All steers get same color ear tags in the right ear. When I get a heifer from a democrat mom (won’t take care of calf, ornery, fence jumper...) I put a different color tag in the right ear to make sure it leaves ranch after weaning. Simplifies sorting later
Great question! These calves will most likely be purchased by a seasonal grazing (or “stocker”) operation which will graze them for a few months until they are around 900 lbs. at that point they would most likely go to a feedlot to be fed out to their finished weight. I don’t know exactly where the retail product will end up, but these are high quality calves so likely they would end up at a high end grocery store or restaurant that markets black angus beef. Definitely not in an Arby’s sandwich! Thanks for the question!
Farmer Tyler Ranch I have such a high interest in agriculture it’s one of the only things that I’ve cared for im 22 and I think I’m going to major in agribusiness I’ll work on a farm or ranch it’s just so hard it seems to get my foot in the door I’ll look on the internet within 50 miles and there will be like one ranch (usually ranch in Texas) or farm hiring at a time

Nice video, hope you get good prices! Sorry to see 31 go, not just due to injury, but also low prices on butcher or packer cow weight right now. But no sense spending on feed for her for another year before she could calve, if she could deliver. You made the same call I would have made.
Thanks a lot Floyd Farms. Yeah butcher cow prices are terrible right now but it was time for her to go. From a business standpoint I couldn’t justify keeping her. I know you get it. Just the way it goes sometimes. Thanks for watching and understanding!
G'day Mate, please look at getting some wood chips down in your cattle pens. Deep layered and let people know the outcome - I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Have a great one.
Tyler you are doing an amazing job with your animals .I wouldn't want to fall in that mud cause than 🐄 will run over me ,you don't have to buy beef you got some already later you will be seeing more. Thanks for sharing
How long is your stock trailer? I bought some 1-year old heifers and am trying to get an idea of how big of a trailer I’ll need to hire to get them home.
Hey I recognize that sale yard, even though I've never been there - just drive by it on the highway. In Galt, ain't it? I'll be driving by it today to go to The Gun Room in the neighboring town north of there in E.G. just off of Grant Line Rd.
I see this video is from January, but I do have a question about #31, the injured cow that you sold for butcher. Wouldn't it have been more economical to butcher her and put in freezer than to sell for next to nothing, and sell one of the 4 steers that you kept back for butchering? I know #31 probably isn't as big as what you typically butcher (considering you are keeping the 4 steers out until next year) but the processing fee wouldn't be as much either and I would think you would get more for your time/money (inputs) that route? Just curious- thank you in advance
The problem with butchering an old cow like that is all you get from her is hamburger. At that age any steaks or anything like that would be very tough so when they are harvested, everything is ground. Thanks for the question!
Thanks DFF I hope we get a good price too. Yes I sorted them by myself, it’s slower and a little tougher but it’s what I gotta do. My wife shuts the trailer gate on them when I load but she was so pregnant during filming (she’s actually in labor as I type this haha!) I wouldn’t let her do any more than that. Thanks for watching!
@@farmertylerranch4399 - Nice! That's by Elk Grove, yes? I'm in Southern California but have been thinking about getting into the meat packing industry. I've actually been researching the stockyards and what not. My father is a cattle buyer in New York state, as was his father and his father. My father's great uncles owned one of the biggest calf slaughterhouses in the country from the 1950s to the mid-80s in upstate NY. I wasn't alive at the time, but I grew up around it after.
I switch out bulls every two to three years to avoid that close of an inbreed (father x daughter). If you breed heifers to a different bull you can keep your main herd bull three years with no inbreeds, if you have one bull cover all of your cattle regardless of age change him out every two years. If you want to keep the same bull longer than that you could always sell your entire calf crop and buy your replacements, but I prefer to change out bulls.
Xu Ay you can in-line breed. There’s some benefits to it. A lot of your registered guys do it that way but you have to have a strong understanding of genetics.
Can you get limerock or other road base material in your area, maybe dig out that muck and get some good rock in their so its easier on you and the cattle while working! Just a thought, mud sucks! After seeing your working area, that might be a lot of loads of materials! Lol
Yeah that would be a lot of rock and it would have to be replenished often. I just need to time things out better where I’m not doing that in the mud! Thanks Brad!
Are you going to show the slaughtering and processing in a video? My sister has a Meat Locker and I know some people have a problem with watching those things, but I find it very enjoyable to watch. It is, however, a lot of work. Great videos. I just found your channel and have been enjoying it so far. Keep up the good work.
I go back and forth on whether or not I should show that. Like you say some would like it some would hate it! And I’m not sure my butcher wants to be on camera. I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel Joel, thanks for watching!
@@farmertylerranch4399 I am a rancher too with a small herd, but I bet you get a lot of haters with the processing video. None of that is pretty. It's reality. Some stalk people that are real like you or me that do farm to table and will post crap that is really horrible. I think your videos are really fun to watch and I like the way you show the one-,man-band part, as that is like my place. I am fairly new and I am introducing new cows into our isolated heifer stock. Do you test all cows or quarantine them when you bring them into to a new herd? Also, do you worry or is there any worry about BVD and PI cows in this local industry. We deliver to Petaluma.
New shirts is awesome. That day I went to the newholland dealer there were probably 10 people staring out the window watching me video tape. Definitely was different with an Audience you could actually see.
Thank you very much! They are mostly Black Angus with some red angus and old Hereford genetics in there somewhere. Used a Hereford bull and a black bull this year so calves ought to look a bit more colorful now. Thanks for watching
Nice shirt. It makes ya look thinner. :) Ain't nothing better than working cattle in the mud. At lease, ya didn't fall down or walk out of your boots. Cattle prices are low here too.
Why thank you! I thought sure I’d walk right out of a boot but I got lucky and didn’t. Actually got my check today from the sale and we did ok. Even got $500 for the ol sick cow, never thought she’d be worth that! Thanks for watching!

Glad the sorting went well. Hope you didn't ruin your boots. Looked awful sloppy. I know about motoring thru large cities with large MH & tow vehicle, always think up a few new swear words! Sorry to see #31 go, but that has to be, no calf, no food. Good video.
Thanks Ardurbin you know I think the boots are going to be ok. I’m wearing them now and all seems well. I hate when you try to leave a space in front of you because you have a trailer and some jerk sees that opening and swerves right in! Happens all the time! With ol 31 I’m just glad I didn’t have to shoot her you know? All part of it. Thanks for watching!
i got a question for you farmer tyler , how do you feel about an 3yr old open cow? a close by farmer asked me if i was interested. iam kind of not sure if good or bad? or stay away?what do you think about breding her back?
Thanks for the question New Farmer. To give you a good answer we need to know a few more bits of information. Why is she open? Is she nursing a calf? Has she ever been bred? At 3 years she should have already had 2 calves so if she hasn’t I would want to know why. My gut says someone wouldn’t get rid of a cow in the prime of her life unless there is something wrong with her. But get the answers to those questions and let’s go from there!
I live along the Alabama coast and the areas auction barn for cattle was 1 mile from me. It had been there for 60 years or so and they closed it last year and now the whole place is a field..just not enough cattle farms as once we're and it's sad
First off welcome to the channel. In this video I kept six replacement heifers that will be used for breeding this year. The rest that were sold were the same age so still viable breeders but I only wanted to keep those six because to my eye they were the best out of the bunch. Those that were sold could very possibly go into someone else’s breeding herd. Good question thank you!
Your face must be a little cold! Now all you need is a crew cut and you'll be set! Ha ha. I'm glad it all went well. It's too bad about that heifer. You did your best bro! It was cool to see the corral setup and how you guys do it all. Very well thought out, and efficient. I hope you make a good very well deserved paycheck!
Thanks Chris. Face is definitely colder these days, but the weather has been warming up a bit. The outcome with the cow was as good as what I could have hoped for in this particular situation. I got the check today and actually got $500 for her, couldn’t believe it! The feeders did pretty good to, all in all I can’t complain. Thanks for watching Chris!
You know I’m kind of embarrassed to admit it but I haven’t sat in on a sale in years. Actually never at this sale barn! Every year I say I’m going to but I never do. Maybe this will be the year and if they’re ok with me filming yeah I’ll definitely take you along
Do you weigh your load before unloading? Some sales barns dont always pay for the correct weigh. Their is a margin of error. One of our loads lost 1165lbs after the disagreement they found a error on their part of 1021lbs. In our favor. All we have heard is about the drought in California for the past 4 years, it looks to be over. And over your boots. Great video!
No I don’t have a scale or any way to verify if the sale barn is honest. It’s in their best interest to error on the heavy side if anything since their commission is based off the weight. Yeah I think the drought is over for now. Pretty typical, we get a few wet years and a few dry years and everyone panics over both! Thanks for watching!
New to the channel from Nebraska. Learned some, heart got sad for the hurt cow and selling day (*this is why I can farm but love it 🤷), but great educational video. Do love me a good hearty steak though.
Tyler in that muck need waders not boots and the cow she needed to go like you said she would better as a beef than a cow. I liked those white face you choose and that new shirt looked better on you.
Thanks a lot Roger I think you’re right. Damn mud was on my pants almost up to my knees! Yeah it was time for her to go, sometimes that’s just the way it goes. Thanks for watching!!
It's a female that's kept to produce future calves. As older cows are retired/sold or otherwise lost, the new heifers take their place or another reason could be if the rancher wants to expand and grow the herd. I grew up on a herford ranch in South Dakota and still remember many a muddy day just like this one sorting cows out ;-)
a wise old farmer told me this - the best way to make a small fortune in farming is to start with a large fortune.

@@farmertylerranch4399 im on the boat with Joel. i say pack em up and show us that ride too!! farm to table!!
Good video.
How many cows and acres do you have?
New shirts is awesome. That day I went to the newholland dealer there were probably 10 people staring out the window watching me video tape. Definitely was different with an Audience you could actually see.
Haha yeah I don’t even like to film in front of my wife let alone strangers! Hey we’ll get used to it Ted!
Good looking cattle.
Thank you very much! They are mostly Black Angus with some red angus and old Hereford genetics in there somewhere. Used a Hereford bull and a black bull this year so calves ought to look a bit more colorful now. Thanks for watching
This Is Your Pay Day 😄😄i know when you sat down you didn't want to move no more the day you went through this.
You said it was payday, but how much pay per animal?
Why is there so much mud and water in some areas of the farm?
Dude, You're Awesome
Thanks Jason!
Damn Tyler you clean up pretty good nice shirt. Good looking calves.
Thanks it was time to shed my winter coat! Hopefully cattle buyers agree with you on the calves! Thanks for watching!
Anytime bud.
love the video
it's a great shirt and jacket combo
Haha thank you not bad right?
@@farmertylerranch4399 i saw it at the met gala this year.
I feel like I’ve heard of it, but what is the met gala?
How much do you get per cow in auction?
@@farmertylerranch4399 You did good son!!!! Let's hope things go well this year.
Thank you I thought so too! Babies are about to start hitting the ground again in a month or so, here we go again...
Why do you use a rattle paddle instead of a sorting stick?
The paddle gets their attention from further away, that was helpful in that mud! Usually I prefer a stock whip
@@farmertylerranch4399 Thanks for the response. I'm kinda OK with that as the exception rather than the norm. I completely relate to your story of how you got started and the respect and honor you are showing for your grandpa. I am trying to start from scratch with no outside support. Wish you the very best. Be blessed, David
I think you should get some new boots to go along with that new shirt
Yes some nice Muck Boots have been on my wishlist for quite awhile. Might have to finally pull the trigger on a pair! Look great with my shirt!
Farmer Tyler Ranch I would agree
Do they wash them...try and make them pretty ?
No, cattle buyers know what they’re looking at dirty or clean!
Okay what’s up with the red paddle?
What do you mean?
It been red ? Cows pay more attention to you ?
I live along the Alabama coast and the areas auction barn for cattle was 1 mile from me. It had been there for 60 years or so and they closed it last year and now the whole place is a field..just not enough cattle farms as once we're and it's sad
Thanks Lickedy Split. That’s too bad about the sale barn. A lot less animal agriculture around here than there used to be too
so were these heifers you sold beyond viable child bearing years? new to your channel. just wondering.
@@farmertylerranch4399 thank you for your reply
@@farmertylerranch4399 Nice man! I'm glad to hear it!!
Will you take us to your sale sometime
You know I’m kind of embarrassed to admit it but I haven’t sat in on a sale in years. Actually never at this sale barn! Every year I say I’m going to but I never do. Maybe this will be the year and if they’re ok with me filming yeah I’ll definitely take you along
How much do you get for an yearling calf?
Well you get paid on weight so a yearling is probably 850 lbs or so, might get a $1.20 per pound in today’s market for a steer that size.
@@farmertylerranch4399 thank you very much. This gives a lot of perspective on the economics of running a ranch. It's tough going...I understand now.
What is a steer?
Yes that shirt does make you look different for some reason 🤔😂👍
I know it’s quite a dramatic change huh? Thanks for watching BTO!
Not a problem I enjoy cattle work.
After all that work how much money did you get ?? 💰
I don’t remember exactly we did pretty good, I think around $1.50/lb or so. I was happy. Thanks Glenn!
@@farmertylerranch4399
On the hoof that's pretty good. Thanks for sharing.
How much on average do you get for a head ? Ifin you dont mind may askin
Pretty interesting video.. Good looking cows! #WorldsOkayestFarmer
Thank you much I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Farmer Tyler Ranch on that note do they dock you shrinkage at the sale? Cause they always do up here.
No they don’t. At least not that I’ve ever seen
Farmer Tyler Ranch oh well that’s a nice plus its a good bit of money over the years that is for sure
Holy cow! That’s a huge mistake.
New to the channel from Nebraska. Learned some, heart got sad for the hurt cow and selling day (*this is why I can farm but love it 🤷), but great educational video. Do love me a good hearty steak though.
Thanks Kim!
Yum Yum burgers beef and beef curry ready😅😅😅😅☺😊
Haha yep!
How much did you make?
You don’t have dogs to move your cattle?
Lol, it's only fun and games when there 600lbs!! But 1500lbs is another thing entirely. To me 600 lbs can be pretty dangerous!!
Use a American Blue bull on cows and increase weaning weight. More money in your pocket
Oil can for that gate.
What do you mean? Haha!
Farmer Tyler Ranch lol we don’t hear ours either we have better things to listen for lol
Haha you get it!
Farmer Tyler Ranch just subscribed and am liking the videos keep it up
Thanks Henry!!
Yo is this life worth it ? It seems like you have to have a lot of money to make decent money ! I love the life though
Whats a replacement heifer
It's a female that's kept to produce future calves. As older cows are retired/sold or otherwise lost, the new heifers take their place or another reason could be if the rancher wants to expand and grow the herd. I grew up on a herford ranch in South Dakota and still remember many a muddy day just like this one sorting cows out ;-)
Well hopeu get money
Work I hope everything goes well there to be surprised the money that you get God bless you and I did like that shirt
wow lots of work
