I know plenty of atheists who left various forms of religion for their own reasons and are happier and more free than they could ever be with religion. Same with me.
I'm personally happy being agnostic. I like to think there's something out there that watches over me but I don't believe that religion helps us with our relationship with it. I also don't exactly see it as a typical deity. My own theory is that the universe itself is "the deity." It's alive and therefore created all of us. If that makes sense.
But to each their own. It's about a personal journey for all of us. We all find peace and sanctuary in our own beliefs. Some people are better off when they have religion in their lives. Others are happy with beliefs based on scientific facts. And the rest of us are happy being somewhere in between. If we love and accept each other as we come (unless you're an abuser of course) the world as a whole is a better place
In case of that we can't say that the religion is the only one thing to have piece and to help us to be better. But I proud to say that I have relationship with Jesus that's why I'm happy and have piece in my life.
