    From Rick Riordan’s unbridled hatred of the Percy Jackson films to the notorious battle between Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick, film history is rich with authorial anger when it comes to the journey from page to screen. In this video we dive into ten examples of comic book writers and novelists who looked at what famous directors did with their work and felt just a bit slighted - or, if it’s Alan Moore, just kinda felt that way to begin with. Many of these authors were used to Hollywood damaging their good name - Clive Barker sat through a bunch of Hellraiser sequels before directing his ire at one in particular, while crime novelist James Ellroy couldn’t be bothered to really enjoy a single movie based on his work. Shockingly, even some of the most beloved films, like Disney’s Mary Poppins and the Gene Wilder classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory received a cold reception from their respective creators. It’s tough out there for an opinionated artist! We haven’t forgotten about the anime fans in the audience either, although the response from Katsuhiro Otomo is far more tame and understanding compared to writers like Lois Duncan, whose comments make it seem like she was personally attacked by the slasher film take on her YA novel… and you know what, she might not be wrong about that!

    If you read the book first, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory actually is pretty terrible as a comparison. Charly and the Chocolate Factory, on the other hand, follows the book very well. Also considering Roald Doal's wife helped create it, it's easy to see why the latter is superior.

    As an author myself, I love movies, but film adaptations often fail to capture the imagery in books. They might adapt the plot, but the imagery is usually discarded. To an author, the facial mannerisms of characters are important, sometimes even more important than the story itself, but filmmakers, often through no fault of their own, frequently fail to take such things into account.

    Akira Toriyama with Dragonball Evolution. I honestly kinda recommend Evolution; I am highly aware it is terrible, and I definitely agree with that sentiment. It's just that depending on how you approach it, it can be hillariously bad. Pretty sure Akira would disagree, though. Long story short, it's the biggest reason we got Beerus in the first place. Akira decided to pretty much say "watch how it's done, kids! Let me give you a REAL DragonBall movie." In fact, the only thing he seemed to like from it was Piccolo's acting, which ended up playing as Zamasu in Super.

  • @Poorstargazer23

    The trend I see is books tend to be very personal to authors and the character's experience within the book is the reason it's meaningful and movies seek to tell the story quicker and to as wide an audience as possible so they strip characters down to make them more commercially/socially appealing and that removes the grit and depth the author loved making the movie, no matter how popular or well made, seem shallow.
    Also probably a reason readers say "the book was better," I think they mean the book was deeper, more complex, and more of an emotional investment.
    Books also have an easier time being introspective and that can be difficult to show on screen.

    'I Know What You Did Last Summer', I like some slasher movies, but I did not like this one. I hope there is a remake and go exactly by the novel. the screen writer destroyed my favorite novel.

    • @GarytongueBetz-vl1fu
      @GarytongueBetz-vl1fu 11 місяців тому

      Well, it was written by Kevin Williamson who wrote the Scream Screenplay so not sure what Lois Duncan expected.
      ...but I believe she hated it because it was A slasher and her daughter was murdered. If she hated it so.much I am surprised he was able to adapt, write and direct her book "Killing Mr. Griffin into "Teaching Mrs. Tingle" then. Maybe because it isn't a Slasher?

      Unless you count being portrayed as slightly crazy to becoming totally cuckoo-banana pants a character arc, he did not. I don’t think Nicholson was a good choice for that character at all (at least at the beginning of the film. He plays unhinged very well toward the end).
      I’m on team King with this one. I understand that movies have to take liberties and make changes and edits to adapt a novel, but Kubrick completely sterilized and missed the point of the source material.
