Another Colorado/canyon owner here. Think I've got a blown converter, but I know you mentioned sonnax o ring kit for the valve body, in an install like this would you also recommend something like their "zip" kit?? And also out of curiosity, typically what would a rebuild of that depth costs approximately?
I searched out information about my Duramax 2.8 Colorado in order to see what is inside this transmission (mine is failing). This is an awesome video to show how this transmission goes together. It would have been awesome to see the TC as well, since it was obviously damaged, maybe even tearing it apart. But still an awesome video. Thanks for the info.
Hey @GaryFerraro really appreciate you knowledge during these videos. I do have a question regarding this transmission, my neighbor has a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro 3.6 automatic and i believe this is the transmission on it. the issue they experience is the vehicle is sometimes getting stuck on park and does not come out of gear unless using the neutral release. Yet i do see that the dash is displaying the vehicle is in Reverse while in park. I am seeing he has a check engine light, the stabiliTrak and traction control. I checked for codes, P0700, P1915 where codes that were appearing. it also had stored P0711,P182E, and P2534 as permanent codes. i did some research and found that the code P0700 could be triggered by other codes if present which i happened to believe was due to P1915 for the park and neutral switch or otherwise known as the Internal Mode Switch. Apparently this was replaced and after 3 days the issue returned. Before i tear down and inspect the sensor and harness i wanted to follow up with you and seeing if you had any recommendations?
Your comments about Ford C-4 sticking governors reminds me of a story. A Transmission mechanic was recalling some of the things the mechanic that taught him, way back when. If it was a Ford C-4, C-6, or FMX, and the governor was suspected of sticking, he would get the vehicle up to about 40 MPH on the road, then, try to engage it in Park! The idea was to have the parking pawl create so much rattling that the governor valve would dislodge any particles. The later mechanic would never try that, he would rather take off the extension housing, and, clean up the governor that way. ;)
I have a 6L50 in an 08 CTS. I had a stripped output shaft spline and the transfer case stripped input shaft spline, both replaced. I'm getting codes P0700, P0716 and P1751. After driving a while or intermittently, I get a very hard shift, especially when in traffic at slower speeds. Have you experienced this issue before? What would you recommend?
Would you always upgrade the regulator? Would all the friction be replaced? If the shuttering torque converter is a consistent failure point who makes a better one?
I always update regulator valve (big problem with wearing out) Always replace the clutch plates. I believe the problem is the material that the clutch is made out of. So that has been upgraded, I purchase the converters from Transtar and rarely have a problem
@@GaryFerraro Seems we are all learning about these 6l50's. In todays market is a new 6l50 even worth? knowing what its going to do. Just drop the trans and have it rebuilt with upgraded plates and clutches new master kit for switch in the electro hydro switch ? and going to replace with Amsoil Dexos iv. That's what I perceive anyways.
@@GaryFerraro So I got a quote from a Local guy saying 5500.00 for the rebuild. Don't have that on hand. Now I don't know what to do If I flush it, It could make it worse. I bought all fluids from amsoil ATF was like 150.00. Should I flush it and hope for the best. or just save up for the rebuild and deal with it?
I just bought a 2016 gmc canyon diesel 146,000 miles has 6l50 and 3rd slips at first before locking in, the slip time veries no slip to all slip to 4th depending on throttle seem not to slip with heavy throttle. Will be towing in the future and don't like fixing things twice so I've been doing some research and most common issue seems to be the check balls. I don't want to remove the trans. I'm thinking a valve body service and a deep pan would fix it. Any other service suggestions while I'm in there. Seen people say adding separate trans cooler isn't necessary as they don't tend to overheat. I did see your other video with the o-ring plug kit😉
@GaryFerraro I'll try manual mode on the highway tomorrow and check. Would that mean full rebuild, checking shift pistons, or solinoid. No malfunction indecator lights on the dash. Still watching UA-cam videos here and there. As you can imagine the truck does run and drive but needs lot of service work done and don't want to tow till everything is up to 100%
Gary this was a great video. I have this transmission in my GMC Duramax Canyon. 50,000 miles. If you did your rebuild, as impeccable as it appears, would this engine just eat up this transmission/TC again? Currently truck shudders, clutches feel like slipping in 2-4 ranges, and there is a big chug when engine shifts while truck is decelerating (highway speeds).
hopefully you can help me. I have a 2009 cadillac cgs with the same transmission. Problem Is when from a stop I accelerate and it feels like 2nd gear goes in twice. It feels like it kinda grabs for a moment then releases it and the grabs again but with a hard pull. sometimes if I take off fast it doesnt do it.
Sounds like something is going on with that 2-6 clutch, piston may be debonding. has this been scanned for codes and has the fluid level been checked? car does the same thing cold and hot?
yes it has been scanned but no codes. It has brand new oil with a new filter. at first it only did it when cold. after driving for a few minutes it went away. now it just does it at all the time but when cold it just shifts hard and as it gets hot it starts to feel worse
@@gs3188 Yes, just drop the pan, 2 bolts hold it in and unplug old one from TCM, very easy to do, Make sure you install the plastic rod into the manual valve
