I was fortunate enough to attend both Paris 1/4 finals. As an Irish supporter and with France my second team it was heart breaking. But incredible games, atmosphere like no other for both matches. Memories I will never forget, rugby at its highest form and both games fighting into over time. It was all special. Good luck to NZ and SAF for this weekend's Semi-Fs.
As a springbok supporter, I can honestly say it is the win that I have felt the most conflicted over. The game was so good that no one deserved to loose - and the utter disappointment that the French players and fans must have felt is heartbreaking. I cringe every time I see any Bok fan poking fun at the French loss or posting derogatory meems - it just doesn't show the respect both teams deserved from that game alone - let alone the 4 years of games that preceded it.
As a French fan I can say that it's been 4 this team plays beautifull rugby, whenever there is opposition the matches are pure BANGERS, and are very intense to watch emotionally. There is not a lot of French fans saying this game was that great, because that's a painful one... At least we loose in best way we could, that's what you expect from the hosts. Hope we will continue to stay on top for the love of rugby. Bravo à l'Afrique du Sud et merci aux guerriers pour ce spectacle ! 🇨🇵⚔️🇿🇦

“Whoever lost would’ve earned every ache of the heartbreak which, ultimately, is a privilege delivered as pain afforded to those who had the most meaningful love and hope.” Wow.
The truth is that we wasn't at our top level due to mistakes, frustration, and maybe some pressure. Players gave everything and nobody can blame them for the performance. This is just sad to loose after this because we were dominant for the most part. I hope the players will manage to get trough the most cruel defeat in the history of rugby and come back stronger. France has a brillant future in rugby, this time congratulations for SA 🇿🇦, WE'LL BE BACK 🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵
@@Wolf-hh4rv what the fuck am i reading, it's over for french rugby. This was our best team ever in 100 years and we still can't pass the quarters. Stop pissing in our asses, rugby is becoming a dying sport in france and nobody will give a single fuck about it in 3 years max. world rugby will keep being a southern hemisphere masturbation and nothing will change lmao.
I have to say, both team were basically perfect. This time I must say it was almost due to luck. A couple of bounces in France favour or a couple less bounces in Saffas favour would have changed everything. It really was an immovable oblject against an unstoppable force kinda game.
2 points on that. 1 - a team creates its own luck imo 2 - The bounce of the ball did favour SA that night, but on ANY other day, the bounce could have favoured france. That game was a true specticle of rugby played at the highest of levels and if it was possible, both teams should have won and gone through to the semi finals.
@@jasonoffice548yeah And the french coule won this game too Thats 1 point difference If juste one favorable rebound for SA and thats lost If you look stats french team had more chance to win But Some rebound and decisions of the ref could change this game
One thing that is not spoken of enough is team work. In Western culture it's about admiring one person. And the springbok team have amazing individual players, but their team work is beyond amazing, a real synergy. One falls or drops there is another one right there to pick it up. "I am what I am because of who we all are"
For sure the synergy was at the maximum that they had a 16th player on the field aka O'Keefe, the difference is insane no doubt. France was much more better than these hodlums, soooo much better
As a Bok fan, the most remarkable thing about this game is how many of us survived what felt like an 80 minute heart attack. The ‘95 Final was tense, but at half-time you could feel something was in the air, this game, when Eben scored, it almost didn’t register that somehow the boys weren’t just still in it, but they were in front. Like Bongi said, FOR SOUTH AFRICA! Condolences to France, it takes two teams to make something that special, and they were utterly brilliantly breath-taking.
In 1995, what was "in the air" was the huge scandal that all rugby fans remembered. You can give O'Keeffe a beautiful gold watch. As with William Derek Bevan in 1995, after the final won by South Africa against New Zealand and having refused 4 tries to France in the semi-final (all rugby fans remember this scandal), he receives as a gift from the SouthAfricans, a gold watch. Subsequently, Derek Bevan was charged with serving the South African cause.
They obviously did. Congratulations to South Africa, they are a great team indeed. But all non french fans have to understand that this game, in the french collective psyche, nourrishes a feeling of a prevalent unfair treatment by the refs in this sport. 1995, 2011, now 2023 were hard to take, to say the least. And it's not about being sore losers. France' sport history is full of iconic beautiful losers. In cycling, Raymond Poulidor, who never won the Tour de France, is much more revered than his rival Jacques Anquetil, who had 5. In football, same with Saint-Etienne team in the 70's, which never won the european cup but kept an indefinable aura... It's not about the fact you lost. It's always about HOW you lost.
@@ogamiitto8627 The referee obviously didn't do the best of jobs and there is a video by TSAnalytics about it, but as you'll see, no one team seems to have been favoured. The French played an excellent game on the whole but in the 2nd half I feel that South Africa really took it up a notch and played very well.
I have to say that it is not often that I ever see another team dominate SA physically (if ever). The French did this for some periods in this game. If you ever want to get a Saffa team's respect, this is how you do it.
Exactly in my life time there have been so many times I felt the Bokke should have won but lost. This French team is going to be very challenging for everyone moving forward.
Sure, a live robbery always feel like a pain specially at this level. Now we have our holy trinity : 1995 / 2011 / 2023. Congrats Commonwealth ! O'Keefe the mighty 16th boks
As a South African my respect for the French team is at an all time high after that performance! It could’ve gone either way Ps: all the salty Frenchmen replying to this are making me lose my good will.
@@girodleo31 I'm with you AND I'm also a South Africa supporter! I watched the game with an eye on the ref and also thought; "Whoops, that doesn't look right!" And much like the times when the Springboks have had a rough time with the ref, I've walked away from the spectacle and wondered what could have been. That is why I like Rassie's posture towards referees. "Let's make it easier for them to ref the game." because in all honesty, the rules have made it more difficult to ref while the spectacle and safety have improved immensely, so the only thing the players can do is to play in a manner more conducive for eliminating controversy.
Next Level analysis Squidge - i remember finding your channel at the 2019 WC in Japan and your commitment to "finding" how the game actually evolves chess like is still there and so absorbing - fantastic work and really appreciate it...
Loved this analysis, you explained it in a way that I finally understand a teeny bit of the brilliant minds behind this crazy game with the odd shaped ball. Thanks ❤ Rugby is most certainly the winner after this match
I’m so glad you said it too because after I watched SA vs FRA I honestly thought it was the best game I’ve ever watched. And I’ve watched a lot of rugby too
Much more one of the biggest robbery ever toes to toes with 1995 and 2011. SA is always involved in these scandals. No more respect for them at all, it's done.
I'm surprised there wasn't a mention of Kriels kick to Arendse, may not have been tactically planned in accordance to your analysis but the shear beauty of that try🤩
This was bloody brilliant! I always feel like I'm educated, entertained and just carried along by my Virgilio of Squarespace into the daunting world of rugby strategy. What a game that was. Thank you!
Thanks for the great words about Rassie and Jacques. I truly believe they will go down in history as guys that made a difference not just to Bok rugby but world rugby as well. And what they've done for SA is immense, just as long as our useless government don't stuff things up as usual.
Mike Tindall and a few other pundits could learn a thing or two from squidge. “South Africa don’t play they score tries off 50/50s”, if you score 3 tries in a row off 50/50s, by definition, they’re not 50/50
Mark Tindall is the child of a salty English colonialist. Take the game for what it was. A brilliant display of the most intense, strategically calculated, fast paced rugby, Played for 81min straight. And I am a neutral who just enjoy the game.
@@geoffhughes225Yes you can have multiple 50/50 events in a game, but if many '50/50' events all go in the same direction ut is highly pbable that they were never 50/50 events to beging with.
As good as your analysis is, Squidge, I still don't think people understand what a great game of Rugby we witnessed. France were incredible. They managed to tactically deny the Springboks of scrums & line outs and; combined with aggressive physicality, dominate the collisions. Add in slick passing and you can understand how France scored 3 beautiful tries. On the other side we had the Springboks who absorbed the French onslaught and deprived of their main weapons, sought to use quick counter punches to stay in the fight. Ultimately the great defences of both teams took over and the result was decided on a 52m kick. This has to be the greatest World Cup game ever. It's sad that someone had to lose.
You have forgotten to say that this 52 meters penalty by Pollard at the 68th minute should have been given to France instead as Kwagga Smith puts his hand on the ground before trying to pick up the ball...
You’re absolutely right! Almost on par with Dragon vs Connacht nov 2012. History was written right here. After this game Rugby Union will never be same. Eramus is such a genius and a nice guy ! Obviously go bokke, best rugby nation to have ever existed. God bless 95 and them joining international competition, rugby has never be the same since.
@@marco-dn7kd Whistle watch explained why this was not illegal - ua-cam.com/video/ErjDnbh5yFg/v-deo.htmlsi=Ynq8KMto4rXmXiLV&t=235 In summary, it's not illegal to touch the ground. It is illegal to support your bodyweight while performing the jackal. In my view, at the angle we saw, it could go either way. It certainly looks like he's resting on his right hand before he goes for the ball, but then he's able to have both hands on the ball without moving his feet foward. Ref called it pretty much instantly, so from his vantage point it was probably a lot less ambiguous.
@@kjlovescoffeewhistle watch is a great show and I love Nigel Owens but almost everytime he stands by what the referee said... And it's normal, imagine him saying "Nah Ben O'Keefe did a really bad job". How many penalty have we seen for such a movement, he has both hands on a ground at some point just before he goes for the ball, that is a penalty to France no question :(
@@kjlovescoffee well inconstency is the major issue when talking of this WC refereeing. Many similar actions ended with a penalty for the defender. At this moment of the game and such an important one the ref can decide the outcome of the match when it should have been the game itself. Again as J.Stransky put it "I thought a few decisions went our way. You have to take the luck when it comes and I would imagine that, for once, Rassie Erasmus is not going to be making a video." And these decisions all along the match went mostly the Boks way as Erasmus has entered into Ben O'Keeffe''s brain. He is still very young and he hopefully will learn of this as well. Curious to see how it goes for the next game even if the Boks are overwhelminig favorites.
Cela fait déjà une semaine et c'est encore une souffrance Lundi matin j'étais persuadé que ce n'était qu'un cauchemar et que le match n'avait pas encore eu lieu 😭

@@oalphacool4433 as a Welshman I have very clear memories of the semi-final against France in 2011... sometimes luck is on your side, and sometimes it isn´t.
@@oalphacool4433I'm french as well, to me Joubert was a disgrace, 95 a robbery (but it's long ago), this time essentialy bad refeering but not cheating, I do not believe O Keefe made SA won on purpose, but I agree that with proper refeering we would likely have won this one: The style fo refeering between North and South is not the same, southerners tend to be way more "laxists" on penalties, when you compare to France vs Italy during 6 nations where France were penalized 14 times because World Rugby decided to favor attack over defense, it was complelty the opposite during this match.
Squidge, Will - that was amazing as ever. Particularly loved the analysis of the Etzebeth try - live I couldn’t understand why poor Jalibert had to tackle him - makes total sense now. As a frenchman, I can only salute the Springboks efficiency when it came to punish any mistake made by France. The outcome of the game was so uncertain till the end, I couldn't breathe. This was, yes, probably one of the most epic games of rugby I've ever watched. I wish I had the strength to watch it again, because it deserves it, but I don't. Yet this results in being among the most heartbreaking games in my nation's rugby history (we had our lot already, didn't we ?). Four years is a long wait. Devasted but proud.
It was the most entertaining match I've ever seen, even if it were a random test, like the one seen here from last year, forget a wc knockout game.. but as a safa or French ie, it gave us all near heart attacks or was so thrilling

I expected the Boks to win, but with a very severe testing by a French team with massive credentials and deserving every respect. What I did not expect to see was a game that from minute to minute was totally unpredictable; a spectacle never to be forgotten and in which every single player from both sides had moments of sheer genius or herculian ability and skill. France did not lose this game, it just did not win it, and SA did not win this game, it simply did not lose it. I am 76 years old now and I do not expect to see the equal of this game for the rest of my life. I certainly have not seen the equal of it before and I have always been an avid union player and supporter across a few continents and a lot of years. And while their were some ref issues (as is always the case) it was shared by both teams. Amen.

You are truly a crazy man with a love for rugby. Your analysis is just top shelf. I don't know how you see what you see, but I'm glad you do. Keep up the good work.
The thing I’ve noticed about rassies SA is they may be level in points with you but the difference is you’ve had to go tonnes of phases and work incredibly hard to score where as the boks find a weakness and exploit it with such ease which fucks the opponent mentally. The saffas noticed that French back three couldn’t catch a cold so bombarded them with kicks and scored easily as a result .
Yurp, and that mental fuck up does a lot of damage. Even Ireland felt that they worked very hard for their tries against the ABs, but ABs seemed to have it way easier for their tries (the Mounga/Jordan try sticks out)
Yup he figured out that one French wing wasn’t quite up to it. At first I thought we were kicking badly but it was chaos every time we kicked across there.
This is objectively one of those matches where "It could have gone either way" and it is not disingenous to say. I think both teams worked hard to negate each others strengths and that is really it, this French game plan was copy and paste from the All Blacks Vs Boks game at Mt Smart. Keep the pace extremely high in the first quarter of the game, blow them out then bring the subs on and hold out. It has to be the best rugby union match ever played, it simply has to be. The ability of the Boks to counterpunch in this game as opposed to that one kept them in the fight and in the second half they just slowed the game down to a trickle. Bringing on subs, chicanery with the HIA's and just every last bit to not allow the French to get into a rhythm, plus the sheer depth of their bench meant that they did not have players on their knees in that last quarter like France did. At the end there Dupont was basically walking and their collisions just lacked the oomph.. they were tired. Same as Ireland vs NZL, they played 30 phases but at walking pace and that is why there turned over, guys were so tired they couldn't get to the clean out and it cost them the game. They just did not have enough quality off the bench. All the teams in the upper echelons are going to have learn one thing from the Boks and All blacks, this is now a 33 man game. Develop your depth so there are no noticeable dips in quality and performance and there is no subsitute for "battle hardened". NZL and SA both brought on world cup WINNERS to close out the games. One thing I saw that reinforces this, I saw on another channel someone point out that for the game against England this weekend, Lukhanyo Am did not make the 23, neither did Canan Moodie, Jean Kleyn, Big Andre, Trevor Nyakane, Jasper Wiese and Grant Williams. All of them would walk into the English starting 15, whilst not a single English player would crack the Boks starting 15. It is honestly mind boggling.
Not sure you will read me, squidge, but in the subway back from stade de france (while crying) i mentionned how a welsh, smart, guy, said 2023 might be too early for france. And, a guy in front of me in the subway said "is that welsh guy squidge ?" . Just to let you know it took me until now to digest france defeat. You're doing a great job.
How good is Du Pont!! Far out!! And to the French fans, no worries with the ref blaming etc. It was a tough loss to take given how well the French played and such a good rugby team. It could’ve gone either way, deserves a test series!!

Sure when the referee is always by your side it's quite more easy to handle it no doubt about it. When you will face such robbery as 1995, 2011 and now 2023 you will understand the feeling you can trust me. World rugby is near a joke these days.
Dupont was nullified in the second half and Dr Klerk caught him many times. Dupont had no more ideas once the Springboks caught on to the kicking game. I think the biggest weakness for the French and why they lost that game, was Dupont's performance in the second half.
@@user-zu3zy5xp8oChampions never stop playing...the first rule of World Cup winners. And every decision you are complaining about, has been debunked by referees. There were even more penalties that went France's way. Dupont is feminine, like most French men, and couldn't handle the pressure (he waved the white flag like they do in France). France will never win the WC as their men become more and more feminised. And femininity doesn't work in rugby.

Comparing this game to Dragon vs Connacht 2012, resume perfectly what we witness. History has been written and I was shocked at the brillance, sportmanship and above all the tenue of the game. Obviously Rugby Union can end now because this was just perfection, nothing will ever beat such a match. Now Dupont can move on to 7 liked he wishes because I don't see how on earth any better perfomance can be achieved in rugby union, which such a beautiful outcome. 2 points on that.
1 - a team creates its own luck imo
2 - The bounce of the ball did favour SA that night, but on ANY other day, the bounce could have favoured france.

Good luck Alan from an Irish Boks fan. Hope you guys win the Cup.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

That is why I like Rassie's posture towards referees. "Let's make it easier for them to ref the game." because in all honesty, the rules have made it more difficult to ref while the spectacle and safety have improved immensely, so the only thing the players can do is to play in a manner more conducive for eliminating controversy.

Mike Tindall and a few other pundits could learn a thing or two from squidge. “South Africa don’t play they score tries off 50/50s”, if you score 3 tries in a row off 50/50s, by definition, they’re not 50/50
Ah yes they are. Each 50/50 biunce is a seperate incident. You can have multiple 50/50 bounces in a game
They are poor not only at analysis but also simple mathematics.
Mark Tindall is the child of a salty English colonialist. Take the game for what it was. A brilliant display of the most intense, strategically calculated, fast paced rugby, Played for 81min straight.

@@marco-dn7kd Whistle watch explained why this was not illegal - ua-cam.com/video/ErjDnbh5yFg/v-deo.htmlsi=Ynq8KMto4rXmXiLV&t=235
In summary, it's not illegal to touch the ground.
Again as J.Stransky put it
"I thought a few decisions went our way.
The boks defense is just better
Yurp, and that mental fuck up does a lot of damage. Even Ireland felt that they worked very hard for their tries against the ABs, but ABs seemed to have it way easier for their tries (the Mounga/Jordan try sticks out)
Yup he figured out that one French wing wasn’t quite up to it. At first I thought we were kicking badly but it was chaos every time we kicked across there.
As usual hitting the nail with your video. I'm glad you like my home town Clermont!

Till we found they had a 16th man on the field, the greater SA players M. OKeefe. Congrats Commonwealth, never shameful at all
Yes it was a great game, but rugby lost, thanks to World Rugby, Ben Okeefe and the TMO. Good luck for the World cup, or should we call it the Anglo cup since it seems that non-anglo team just don't have the right to win.
@jeanllup6150100% agree. Let's play our 6 nations turnment with fair-play between honest people wishing that italians can raise little by little their level!
The last 5 minutes of this game was the closest I've ever been to a heart attack. I could literally hear my heartbeat
Always a good day when he posts a video
“He made this, Kurtly Arendse definitely made this, I asked him” 😂😂😂
Thank you for this analysis and thank you for being someone that loves rugby so much. It eases the pain of defeat quite a bit.
Awesome video, don't understand how you notice these things. Absolutely amazing at what you do.
This game was INTENSE! 3 min in france score and then about 3 min later the boks score. you couldnt go grab a quick beer at any time because you would miss something insane
didn't even have time to pee
Thank you for the awesome work. This was the game of the decade
Mate, thank you so much for your work. I started following it during last six nation, your analysis are spot on. That game was a heart breaker (obviously I’m French) and I watched it with my two sons 5 and 11. I had to tell them that the referee didn’t help us, that’s obvious, but that’s the game. But in the end, SA played the perfect tactic. This es kicks were… so impressive! Frankly SA deserves it, even though the last french run could have done it. That was very close! Enjoy your stay in France (and of course Marseille sucks! The worst city of the country! 😉)
Tu comprends ce qu'il dit? Il parle trop vite je comprends que dalle
I think that France deserved it more because they dominated the whole game and the mistakes the ref did cost us the match but not fully we also did big mistakes
Why Marseille sucks? any jealousy involved in your stupid comment?
@@Paul-oe6qk I'm English speaking and I had to watch more than 10 of his videos to hear what he's saying without slowing the video down. He does speak really fast.
Reste chez toi mec nous on est bien a Marseille
I love your feedback!!!! Thank you so much.
Hey, bru..... Took your time doing this video; been waiting!! Thanks for the great video. Yes to all you said. And seeing IRELAND out is also a sad situation. Been a rather good World Cup so far. Thanks a lot.!!
Brilliant analysis, great video & we don't mind the stills, I works my good sir.
As a French fan it was indeed heartbreaking. I really think France was on top of SA. Just look at how much line break they did. SA really did a great job adapting and canceling French attacks. The way Eben locks player into the rucks is amazing. And the forwards trap to isolate French from their supports was genius But still France keep attacking and keep the ball for the most time.
I think France had their chance but lost too many occasions on small errors.
But with all the mistakes and all the counters they only lose by 1pt. It shows the determination they put to game.
About the ref... France is crazy about it and i am curious about what you as an impartial watcher think.
I was waiting for this BIG TIME!!!! Thank you, you're brutally creative man. God bless you
I will miss France and I am a Saffa. But obviously relieved with the win. Thanks for the great breakdown, Squidge!
As French. I'm really pissed and frustrated that we lost against the Springboks. We want our revenge now. 🟦⬜🟥🇲🇫🐓
Well I couldn't care less now 😔😞😓😠
France is an incredible super team. RWC are unforgiving and merciless, even Spring oks (2011). France will be OK.
You paid your 16th player enough, don't worry, he already helped you pass the 1/4 & 1/2. Congrats hodlums
