I had an SKX that broke a while back while doing work. I was heartbroken and at the current prices I could not justify a new one. Instead, I used it as a modding opportunity. Gave it a 7S26 movement, upgraded the crystal, strap, and bezel. It's not the same, but it really feels like it's MY watch now.
look into islander watches. They were designed to be the exact same as the skx. they have the 007 version and the skx013 version homages. Seiko parts work on them edit: they are actually better specd and cheaper than the skx
A couple of months ago I started modding my SKX171 and the result is almost the same like your watch. I really love the look of this mod. This is how the SKX must have been in the first place imho.
I bought an SKX last December, primarily to wear with all my of 22mm NATOs. I'd never seen one; had never held one; had never really wanted one. When I got into watches, I believed all the talk about how it was obsolete. When I got it out on the box, I was impressed, this is a terrific watch for the money. Seiko should have just updated the SKX with a 4R movement, and called it a Gen 2 SKX.. It wouldn't have been much more expensive than the original SKX. That said, I wear the SKX as my beater, instead of a G-Shock. It looks MUCH better (and I can change the NATO/look daily).
After doing the diver watch thing for several years, I've come to a conclusion: Either buy a watch and accept it as is, or go full custom to get what you want. There always will be some compromise on the stock watch unless you buy very expensive. I can see adding a strap, or lumed bezel insert, but that's it. Otherwise you end up with an expensive drawer of misfit watches each lacking in some way. Cheaper to have one perfect watch.
If you buy a heimdallr skx and swap the dial you will have a better version of the skx with just a dial swap. Sapphire, Ceramic bezel, nh35a seiko with havking and winding movement, AR coating. Better dial lume options as well.
@@pinikpikantv3555 I have several Heimdallr SKXs. The best upgrade is to swap in a lumed bezel insert for $20. I've also tried out their new Ti bracelet and really like it.
My first watch was a modified SKX009K. Sadly, I have to sell it at that time. Bought a good conditioned 2nd hand back in 2020. But decided to modify it. Looked for ways on how to. Landed on your channel. And huuuge thanks to you I was able to have a modified watch which suits my preference. From then on modded my own watches after buying the parts. Such good times. Now, I try to maintain the stock look of the watch with the crystal or bezel being the modified parts. It's true, SKX prices have gone up to crazy prices. Wished I didn't sell my mint skx007J, 171 and SKX173 Malaysia variant. Nearest thing to the SKX that i have is the Seiko 5KX Stealth which I absolutely adore. Might replace the mineral glass to Sapphire since I still have left over stock when the itch to modify comes again. Anyway, I might have already overshared but truly it is sad to see seiko prices going up.
I've modified a pair of Islanders. Thanks to Marks parts and your helpful how to. I just started this hobby the around the same time Seiko stopped production on the 007. Story of my life.
The same approach I did when I wanted a spb143. Got a Seestern one and it already came with much of the parts I need and built one for half the price of picking up individual parts.
@@christianmotos You do realize that what you have is, at best, essentially a replica of the real thing, or, at worst, a counterfeit copy. Of course, imitation is said to be the sincerest form of flattery and to each their own. ‘Seestern” wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Seiko, and the same goes for several other ‘brands’. Maybe I’m just splitting hairs here, but I can somehow justify a custom Seiko based scratch build, or modded actual Seiko, vs a Seestern, or San Martin foundation. Maybe Lumeshor will weigh in with his expertise.

Skx untoched is becoming rare. In few years will be hard to find a factory Skx because of this weard modifications. Skx was designed to be a tool..not a toy. Enjoy the ride as it is..nothing compares with a classic skx 😉 That was hapenning with the Seiko 7002 series (pre Skx)..and now if you find one unmodified you are a winner..
I bought a second hand SKX (Could be third hand actually) without box or papers a couple of years ago. I think I paid AUD250 for it. It has a few issues. The stem is damaged or dirty, so when you try to screw the crown down, the date/day flips over. I recently bought an NH36 movement to swap into it, but have been considering new dials and other mods such as a ceramic bezel insert while I have it in bits. However, after watching this, I think I'll leave it as original apart from the movement and a signed crown.
Nice, great advice. I have my eyes on an auction for a damaged SKX007 but watching this, seems i would only end up using the case. So this has been a massive help for me.
I would love to see you build a Batman blue/black bezel with 4N34 GMT and jubilee. Being very old I need the magnifier on the dial to enlarge the date. Never seen any one glue one.
thanks for your insight on the expense of changing out parts if you have this watch to modify , or if you like the pros and cons of going down that route, makes sense appreciate it, in the end it depends on what the individual or in this case client desires, top stuff love your builds
With prices for a new SKX007J being well over $1,000 I think I’ll hold off on the modding. It’s crazy but the SKX007 series watches might be the new Cpt Willard.

You will be able to buy a new old stock skx for a few thousand in a few years... if you can find one. Nothing that came out on the market from Seiko in recent years (5kx line, Turtle, Prospex) or other models are like skx..whatever some say. It is already considered vintage since it is from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectable. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more... they were already sold..
Hi Erick, as i see you're working on one of my top 5 favorite watches of all time, that legendary SKX !! Damn i love your content, keep up the GREAT work.
Ha! Been watching your vids for awhile now but still picked up a tip with using the lens cloth with your press. Just had "now why didn't I think of that" moment. Thanks!
I subscribed because I find your videos very relaxing and enjoyable and I love seeing the finished watch. When you are putting a sapphire crystal onto the watch, how do you know how much pressure to use? Is there a gauge on the equipment you use, or do you do it by feel?
Well done! Although I don't think you can say something is better than the true authentic. However, you created a new watch that can last longer and has stronger capabilities. It's still apples to oranges at the end of the day. Still nice watch you built, maybe don't call it a Seiko and something custom named instead.
Got mine today , payed 137 including shipping. Everything is original but the bezel insert is slightly scratched out and the dial abd hands have patina. Do you think that replacing those parts with new ones is better or to leave everything original?

If you used one of those cheap blue demagnetisers it might not have done the job. They are a bit hit and miss, and sometimes act as magnetisers instead, especially if you're using 240 volts.
@@richb9054No problems. I ended up getting an Elma Antimagnetic. Expensive, but it works perfectly on the first go whereas the blue one never did. Watchmakers can do it for you very cheaply as well. You could check if it’s actually magnetised first by passing a compass over it.
To build from 3rd party parts, cost of everything would be around $350-400. I assume when you say the cost of a build would be similar or more than a $800 SXK007, I assume your adding in labor costs?
Good points, but an unmodded or even lightly modded SKX will still always be worth much more than essentially a fake knock off SKX. Apples amd oranges.
