I think here in Britain we really do just love a standard cup of tea and we’re not too adventurous with our teas generally so a decaf cup before bed is considered a bedtime tea for us haha.
as a german this is so interesting because a tea trying to taste like a desert or something else is so common here. I do drink a wide variety of tea but I usually stick to natural tones so maybe green tea with cardamon or a herbal tea blend or an earl grey blend. Theres usually a whole issle of tea blends in our supermarkets and I don't get 3/4 of whats offered. No thanks to caramel blueberry cheescake tea but it seems to have its audience here 😂
A solution to the TBR thing that I've found really useful as a fellow mood reader is rather than picking specific books, picking a category of thing you want to read more of. For example, I'm doing a 'Reading Round The World' challenge and have been for a few years and my goal for this year is simply to make more progress on that than last year. It has the challenge, ticking off your list component of a TBR that makes the monkey brain happy, but you still have a lot of freedom of choice within that category. Lianne from literarydiversions also does category based reading goals rather than TBR based ones which she has on her 'bingo board from hell' and she has the additional rule of when she completes a category she can do something to make another category easier to complete (e.g. upon achieving 'read 5 non-fiction books' she changed 'read 80% of 2023 purchases' to 75%)
You talked about having a special section on the truck for books recommended by Raeleen. I'd love for you to revisit Books Unbucket episode #77 Dream Bookstore Display Tables for the book truck. Do any of those still apply?
I'll one-up you on the "older movies". These days I can't believe kids (or people in their twenties) haven't seen The Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, or The Dark Crystal. (I was born in 1979.)
I'm sure Ariel knows this having lived in the UK, but blighty is British slang for Britain! So saying you're back in blighty is a slightly old school way of saying you're back in the UK after having been away, hence Blighty's :)
i turn on my favourite podcast about books. they talk about tea and bread for half an hour. i lean back and smile. yes, perfect, this is exactly what i came here for!
My partner and I have decided to do the quarterly updates alongside you guys. We both love the pod and when we woke up at 3am and couldn't sleep we decided it was a better time than any. We were exhausted but satisfied 🎉
Maybe I should become a patreon if Raeleen finishes Telegraph Club 😂 Also, my favorite read so far this year is Outlawed by Anna North, which I picked up because Ariel read it! 😊
I've recently been diagnosed with a chronic illness that - among other things - means i have to do various forms of exercise basically every day now and i've been struggling quite a bit with it but getting Books Unbound on mondays and then listening to you two in little parts throughout the week while i go through my motions has really helped me stick to it - THANK YOU for keeping me company
Tuning in for the first time and it was very jarring hearing my name the first couple of times (since it’s not super common). I was declutterring and kept stopping by to look up as if Ariel was talking to me 😅. Really enjoyed the episode & will definitely keep tuning in!
Maybe in regards to the TBR issue you should give yourself prompts “a book to learn” or “a book that feels like …” so it is more flexible and motivating. Kind of like hunting for books that fit in those categories rather than feeling sad/diassapointed/stressed with a set list of books😊
Last night at the Telegraph club is probably my favorite book!! But I’m also a sucker for a historical fiction coming of age story. I can’t wait to hear what Raeleen thinks!
Ariel- when you're next in the UK, you should try Bird and Blend tea (if you haven't already) for the chocolate digestive tea. They have a gorgeous cream egg tea at the moment too which I'm obsessed with! They also ship internationally...
Raeleen, can you tell us more about your change of season celebrations? What is its origin, and what activities do you do? I'd love to hear more about that ❤
I second that! It looks intriguing. Raeleen sounds like she is doing great. Starting your day with intentional activities and successes is life changing. That's why in the military you gotta wake up and make your bed!
A PSA for any Aussies - they stock the malty biscuit tea at Coles and Woolworths! Also - highly recommend drinking the tea with oat milk - I tried it with cows milk and the flavour just didn't hit as hard. The oat milk reeeeaally brings out that biscuity flavour.
extra PSA to say it’s also sold at David Jones for almost half the price!! They also have the toast and jam one :) p.s. ty for the oat milk recommendation, you were so right!
I told one of my friends about the pod awhile ago and she just told me today she's been listening ever since!! Ugh this makes me so happy! Love you guys 💕
I am from Yorkshire and when you pulled out the biscuit tea it made me laugh !!! I love that tea so much I have it nearly every single day it is amazing - like raeleen said no crumbs but it tastes exactly like after you dunk your biscuits in 😆
just wanted to recommend the griffin and sabine series by nick bantock to ariel! they're beautiful little epistolary books with magical realism, and they're just delighful!!!
This is so funny because I've thought about asking Ariel so many times what happened to the sourdough vlog but haven't, so I'm stoked I can finally watch it again lol. Also, Ariel, if you see this, I miss the reading rush vlogs from around that time as well, in part because you in one of those videos introduced me to Stardew Valley and in a small way entirely changed my life in 2019 😂 for which i am deeply grateful
I read project hale mary first and the marsian later. And for me its just the other way around: Really liked hale mary and then was a little bored with the marsian. Maybe its just the first one you read, that ties you up more. ^.^ Haha, and i never could shove my umread books between my read ones. The thought really stresses me out! (But I know many people do!) 🙃
I got the bedtime tea - based off Ariel's description it sounded just like my cup of tea (lol) and it was!! Haven't tried the biscuit one yet but it's next for sure. Going to skip the toast&jam one though 😂
Decaf Black tea still has caffeine in it (for anyone who doesn't know). It's like you drinking a small cup of regular black tea 😅. So it's not really calming or suitable for bedtime imo.
Ariel! have you heard of the book "Burma Sahib"? It's a book that came out this year about George Orwell and his early years as an officer that eventually transformed him into a writer. It has a 4.14 stars on Goodreads, and I think it will help you with reading a possibly new favorite!
Hi Ariel and Raeleen, love your podcast and have been listening to you girls for years 💙 I've just heard about a book coming out later this year (in August to be precise) that instantly made me think about Ariel and I wanted to shout out it! It is called Libertad by Bessie Flores Zaldivar and it is a queer coming of age novel set in Honduras and the MC writes political poetry for her Instagram account, which of course made me think of Ariel's documentary. Thank you for bringing me so much joy and calm every time I listen to your pod and greetings from Italy! Francesca
Great episode this week! You really inspired me to check in on my own goals. Recently I finished Sweetbitter- as per Rubens recommendation, and it was great. Tove Jansson is next! Thank you guys, please enjoy the week off. P.S the hair is still looking FABULOUS and I laughed out loud when Ariel said her goal was to not cut bangs for the year. Felt! You got this.
What if instead of setting goals to read TBRs, you set a goal to track what your moods were for your mood reads? Ex. "introspective" - Mary Oliver's poetry. Maybe it'd give you the liberty to be mood readers but still have some interesting information to share at the end of the year :)
Instead of TBR maybe we should have a DBR 'Dream Bookish Reading' so just dream book plans we don't have to adhere too haha, that's my kind of tbr pile!!
I will be trying to find that biscuit tea after I finsih my uni classes for today. Watching y’all I try to finish editing my paper (and may or may not be procrastinating)
early 2000s really was insane for amazing movies, i never really realized that!! ive read 'Only Child' this year inspired by Raeleen's 24 in 24 TBR and it was such a sad but heartwarming read! so i'm crossing fingers that's one of the books she reads from that TBR ☺
I've never seen a British section of a grocery store! I guess that puts the B in BC haha. I'm from the US so I'm sure any British tea they try sending to grocery stores ends up in some harbor somewhere 😂
I just finished listening to Project Hail Mary and agree with liking it but also finding it a little meh. I will say this could be me being unfair because I had just finished The Three Body Problem and it was incredible and like nothing I read before so it was a bit of an unfair back to back comparison. With Project Hail Mary, I found the narration style a bit grating after a while (the main character just got annoying) but what was funny was that as often as the main character said “this isn’t like Star Trek” the book actually felt very similar (in a good way) to a Star Trek The Next Generation Episode “Darmok” which is one of the best episodes of the series and a real tear jerker. I recommend it as watching after reading this book.
I love the sourdough journey! 😆🫶🏻🥖 I absolutely love baking/cooking & I started SD many years ago…mine is named “FroDOUGH” 😏🤭😂 farmhouse on Boone has fantastic SD recipes. Going to order that delish sounding tea & try that yoga vid 😍🧘🏻♀️ yoga, bread, & tea are a whole vibe…all some of my fav things too 😂
Hi, I really enjoy your show but I have been quiet. i just wanted to ask you if have watched a show called My Life Is Murder, with Lucy Lawless, she plays an ex-cop who retires and becomes a sourdough bread maker, every episde is full of her making her bread and she is very funny and protective about her bread. (The basis of the show is a freind from the department comes to her every week with an unsolvable crime that she solves.) It is funny and fun, and the mysteries are good. Lucy is very funny in it but series when she confronts the bad guys. Just thought I would let you know, your sourdough talk kept reminding me of the show. She learns German so she can talk to the customer service about her breadmaking machine. 🫓
Ariel says, “You need to start your day in a way that sparks joy.” Exactly. That’s why so many of us start our Monday mornings with “Books Unbound.”😄
Yes!!😊
I never looked up when the video would be posted in their timezones in canada.
For me I usually get it on tuesday morning
Me, shouting enthusiastically: “STUDIOUS POTATOES”
This has to be one of the most chaotic episodes (structure wise) with a calm vibe
I think here in Britain we really do just love a standard cup of tea and we’re not too adventurous with our teas generally so a decaf cup before bed is considered a bedtime tea for us haha.

Raeleen, I’m loving the way the peach is fading in your hair! It looks really nice and I’m excited to see what colors you do next!

I was given sourdough starter as a wedding shower gift

the pagean crossstitch is so prettyyyyyy
This is How You Lose The Time War is one of my favorite books! Good thrift find.

that gorgeous loaf of bread against a backdrop of colourful books 😍😍
I got my bread machine for Valentine’s Day and I have definitely made at least 30 loaves….

All I need to know is HOW do I get invited to one of Raeleen's parties?
Raeleen, your wheel of the year cross stitch is SO GOOD 😭 I am in *love*
As a practicing witch - I am completely IN LOVE with that cross stich!!!
Cross-stitchery witchery. Wonderful!
Omg me too!!!

Loving this. I knew you meant the fun Sourdough book. My crafting emergency is knitting for imminent babies. While listening to audiobooks

As someone who is struggling with sleeping and has peas on their list of favourite foods, this ended up being a great recommendation

the raeleen renaissance!! we love it
Also you're best friends mini truck shelf could be called 'Raeleen Recommends' or Ruban's Rec's haha!!
I love the talk about happy mornings, inspiring! Cozy and happy is my goal😊❤
Ariel was not lying about that biscuit tea. 10/10
I’m relistening to episode 136 oh my godddd you guys were babies I can’t believe how much has changed!
just wanted to recommend the griffin and sabine series by nick bantock to ariel! they're beautiful little epistolary books with magical realism, and they're just delighful!!!
Thank you so much for the audio note at the end, I will be tuning in in two weeks! 😁

ARIEL! IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR YOUR SOURDOUGH VIDEO FOR MONTHS NOW! thanks for linking it:)
Spell correction but author's name is Jasper Fford for 'Thursday Next' Series.
I read project hale mary first and the marsian later. And for me its just the other way around: Really liked hale mary and then was a little bored with the marsian. Maybe its just the first one you read, that ties you up more. ^.^

Rereads really safe my reading. It's kind of hard to find new amazing books and rereads help with keeping up the average rating
Omg I love how both of your peach hair looks now that it’s faded a tiny bit 😍😍😍
Also one of my favourite teas! Like Malted Milk biscuits dunked in a brew. xxx
Girls! I was 21 when Shrek came out! Am I your oldest fan?? Besides the moms? 😂 It's an honor if true. You ladies keep me young.
I find the Toast and Jam tastes like strawberry jam. The biscuit tea tastes malty, but not straight up biscuit to me 😆
Love Ariel's hair style 🥹💓
Anna Karenina goes quick once you are in it. Constantine Levin is a dream.
I've also so far read 17 books this year
man raeleen is really out there living my dream and im stuck here trying to graduate
Toast and jam is my favorite tea
Do they have matching bff spectacles?!
When I saw the title about Sourdough, I thought you guys READ Sourdough by Robin Sloan
Love the biscuit tea
I've never seen a British section of a grocery store! I guess that puts the B in BC haha. I'm from the US so I'm sure any British tea they try sending to grocery stores ends up in some harbor somewhere 😂
31:15 time to jam out to 1999 by Charlie XCX and Troye Sivan on your roller skates ✌️🛼

Yorkshire tea thoughts from a Brit - the biscuit and the bedtime teas are delicious, but the toast and jam tea is vile and should be banned
