I hear gospel, jazz (Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson), classical (Debussy), and ect. It's obvious he has studied for a very long time. Excellent...Excellent arrangement!
every time I listen to this and I've played it over and over again I cry, not only do I cry I also visual in my head where God has brought me and continuing to bring me from . Every time something is extracted this spellbinding performance!!!!!!!
@MMCOGICkeys Yessir! You are so right about this tasteful blend of the various styles! Dr. Montgomery knows exactly where to put each ingredient, and he seasons each passage exclusively with a particular presence with a wonderful sense of dynamics and control. His sound is so rich and elegant - his approach is so unpredictable and subtle!!! The BEST VERSION ever - Dr. Montgomery!!!
The voicing allows so many variations to touch harmonic transitions within each neighboring table. Very nice, along with the improvisational figures. Nice way to re-think about this classic piece by Richard Smallwood. Good training tool.
JayDot Designs This video demonstrated a reharmonization of total praise. It wasn't in the context of a service. I'm sure he wouldn't normally play it this way in a service. This was somebody demonstrating other alternatives to a well known song. He simply just sparked the creativity of anyone who watched this by presenting new ideas and concepts.
absolutely tasteful off the grid. this should make all of us really think and absorb the variables in musical thought. Love it when chords and phrases are colorful and thought provoking.
How could anyone dislike this video! I bet the 3 dislikes is from people who get SSI checks on the 1st of the month or flat out jealous musicians. He killed this song. Superb Playing!
At times it didn't sound like the song, but I guess that's the point. Amazing chord progressions and runs to accompany it. Very different approach and theory not common among most pianist.
yeah the man is following in the footstepsof his surname/last name . the Montgomery Clan. May the Name of the Lord be Praised@ All Times.!!!!!!!your skill will bring you b4 the kings Prov 22vs29.
what harmonics started off rough? It's called playing outside the box! Do you know anything about improvisation, chord substitution, poly chords, or parallel chords?
@mozart77 The idea is to show another approach and have a unique sound...not rewrite the song! Most of the greats will never play a song the same way twice...The way they play at a given time is their story at that time. Listeners are simply to appreciate it in the sense of the story (testimony)...However, DENNIS IS THE MAN! Then again, I like Art Tatum-type of playing...look him up and see the beauty in "over playing"...He tells a story like no other!
Its a nice version, but I like these changes to shed from for other songs...I like bereal's...check out Corey ling's interpretation on gospel organ..."its bananas" as some of ya'll would say!
@mozart77 Nothing wrong with what you said. But it is just a solo so he does have the right to express himself. But on the other hand yes if this was being sang I would not ever want anyone to play like this while singing is going on. But thats the thing about solos you can do what you want. Even if it sounds bad. Thats the key to being a great musician making bad sound like it fits in. Just my opinion may the Most High bless you. But I understand your concern. But one again it is a solo.
@mozart77 It's a matter of perspective. If that is the unique language that he feels that God graced him with, it should be his (Prof. Montgomery's) artistic license to express himself that way. I think "unnecessary" comes across in a different way than you may have intended. And part of the tutorial is to express the abundance of harmonic color that has become a cornerstone of afro-diasporic worship music. Just my opinion. I respect your's.
Who’s still listening to Dennis Montgomery III in 2024 still blessing?

This is amazing...i consider this the best balance between contemporary, traditional, and classical all fused into gospel music by far!
This was masterful, you can tell he feel and hears what he wants to play then executes.
This is one of the greatest performances my ears has ever had the pleasure of listening to!!!!! im not speaking for a week after this!!!!
I hear gospel, jazz (Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson), classical (Debussy), and ect. It's obvious he has studied for a very long time. Excellent...Excellent arrangement!

WOW! I love reharmonization. That's where many great musicians are going to these days to keep from seeming predictable
It was at 2:54 that I gave up music forever.. ..and came to the conclusion that my playing skills are quite frankly, meaningless…
