Hi Robert, my name is Mario Great video! I’m an e46 318i owner from Sydney... I really appreciate your work.. there aren’t many videos out there working on this BMW model, most are on 325 or 330, but this is, I think, is the only Chanel on this 4 cylinders M43 engine... please keep posting, I would really appreciate it.. thanks for your time and effort.
Hi, you Sir are a lifesaver! I have just bought the same car, it's 25 years old with only 66340 miles on it. Following you I am doing the full service changing all the fluids gear box included I would be stuck without you. You are my hero, thank you. 😁🤟✅
Thanks so much for this video! This seems to be the only one out there. I appreciate you taking the time to show everyone how it’s done. I think it’s relatively the same process for the M44. At least I hope lol! Thanks for the help man! Can’t wait to replace mine
Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this engine, I did not know about that particular sensor before watching this video, also there you showed how to replace an air pipe that I have to, and you just pulled it off in the intake dismounting process, well done, you also taught me how to change that pipe , thank you! awesome !
Thank you for this excellent video Mr. Robert. I myself own a 518i E34 with a similar M43 engine and might just have to replace my coolant temperature sensor too. I had one question in mind; Is it crucial to know the exact Nm when tightening the upper intake back again?
hello dear sir , i just wanted to ask you i have the same problem in my car and i want to order this sensor the question is . is it called oil temp sensor or coolant temp sensor ? thanks for your hard work ❤
Solo a los ingenieros de bmw se les ocurre poner un sensor de temperatura relativamente incomodo de cambiar, algo tan importante como eso debería de estar mas accesible como en todos los carros
I didnt remove the manifold at all, just squeezed my hand inside after I removed the coolant hose elbow (as in my vid). If your going to remove the manifold, then I would think there is a gasket, check realoem.com for parts needed.
Hey mate, mine does similar but doesn't have any problems starting or driving. Could mine possibly be only the one on the radiator hose that needs replacing?
The one in the radiator hose is to trigger the thermo fans for the aircon, or turn off the aircon after certain heat (cant remember). Your problem could also be something else, perhaps a faulty gauge or other issue... need to check your codes.
Have you tried clearing the codes? On mine, i turned the ignition on but not started the motor. The gauge needle slowly went back to cold as it was a cold engine.
Thanks. What error code is shown on the scanner if this sensor went defective? In my case the ect sensor was replaced against code p0116, but the error code remains and engine doesn't start intermittently. Probably I was wrong.
Cant remember what the code was sorry. I generally look at the codes as a potential guide, but don't trust them. I just diagnose the issue, guess I'm old school.
Hello :) I have that same problem but a cant start engine. Temperature gauge going max. I must make several time ignition switch and i can engine start. Many people in internet was sayd its DDE problem. I dont know everything i checked.
Replace this sensor and it may be resolved. I had similar problem, when sensor was bad it was hard to start the car after stopping for a while, engine still warm but needed several cranks to start. Now in have no problems, so first change the sensor then see if the problem persists.
Temperature gauge slowly reaches to normal operating temperature but never goes to red I suspect it's my thermostat can you tell me what sensor control the on the cluster
That sounds like normal operating temperature, why would you think it goes to Red? Mine jumped to Red even when engine cold, and to max needle position. Your scenario sounds different.
Cant remember, BUT if you have the temp gauge showing red and the engine isn't, then this is the sender unit to replace. No its only accessible from the top.
i have a problem when cold start .... the rpm drop from 1000 to 400 and then going up back to 800 after the ac kick in .... then the rpm slowly rising up to 1000 and after few minit it stablize back to 800 ..... some ppl said it was a sluggish rpm because of the fuel filter is bad but i have replace it and still same .... is it posibble the cause was this sensor and i dont have any problem with the temperature needle and crank ..... the only problem is the rpm drop for a while and it looks like this sensor is not sending the right signal to the ecu for the right fuel ratio to the chamber and perform auto choke crank .... im afraid if the rpm is low it will cause the engine dont get the proper lubrication during the cold start ...
This is complex, many possible issues. Are you getting any codes? I have intermittent low idle sometimes, also fixed with turning air con on. I haven't looked at it closely as its not bad.

Thanks Mario. I noticed that too, nothing really on these smaller engines do did figure my vids may be of use. Cheers,

Thanks but remember these videos are how I do things, im not a mechanic. So of course always refer to the manual ;)
Thank You for excellent video! This is actually so far the best instructional video for removing upper intake manifold on M43TU E46.
Thanks for the video. I fixed the same problem with your help today. Needed about 1.5 hours for that job.
Thanks for the video. Seeing other people work on their car always gives me more confidence to work on my own. Keep up the good work
Thanks Douglas. I am the same, im a visual learner so use youtube to learn new things, like framing a house at the moment :)

M43B19 here. same problem as of yesterday. thank you for the video
Thanks the tutorial worked like a charm! I used 22mm 1/2 to remove the sensor.
The video was great! I fixed the same problem and followed your video. Very helpful. Thank you.
Fantastic to hear you fixed it... glad the vid helped.

Detailed and clear video . The best
i did not know about the temperature gauge until now thanks for the video
You're welcome.
Chears Mate...thanks from Greece!!!
Thank you. Still helping people 👌🏻
Only paying it forward as others helped me on UA-cam too 👍
AHHH I LOVE YOU i searched so long for this fu**er and i couldn’t find it
Ty, I have same problem! Nice and helpful!!
Thanks man, what a god damn job just for a sensor. Nice video
Yep sure was a pita! Cheers
thank you for the tutorial, what are the symptoms of bad temp sensor ?
The temp gauge needle went to RED when engine is cold.
@Dr. Fill Gut It could be, just disconnect and try it out.
Thanks sir, i'm live in vietnam and i change finish thanks

I had one question in mind; Is it crucial to know the exact Nm when tightening the upper intake back again?
I just usually check to see if there are torque specs, but usually small bolts are not so use correct judgement to determine how tight.
Hello!! thank you for the video.can i move my car with this problem???
Hey man, great video. I wanna ask, can i still use the car when the ect sensor is still fail? Thanks
Very nice video ! 잘 감상하게되어 감사합니다
Subbed great video
I need it done but looks a nightmare 😫
Yep it is hut well worth it of course. Also can do by taking off intake manifold.
Hey man, can you tell us the names of the tools we need to do this?
So I can google them to buy them locally.
hello dear sir , i just wanted to ask you i have the same problem in my car and i want to order this sensor the question is .
is it called oil temp sensor or coolant temp sensor ?
thanks for your hard work ❤
I'm wondering if the sensor can be accessed from under the car.

Nice video dude.
My e46 320d keeps the engine fan on all the time and the temp goes to red as soon as I start the car .
What sensor shout I replace?
Sounds like the same temp sender. Look up realoem.com for parts listings.
What size spanner is needed to open the sensor? Please help me. Tq sir.
Thanks a lot !

You need a code reader. Look them up, they are cheap nowadays.
The sensor you took out looked slightly different to the one you put back in is that fine ?
Thank you I was not aware of the Engine temp sensor. Great job.👍
you r my god thank you!
🤣🤣 thanks
Very good video ! But not need to drain coolant before ?
Thanks. I didn't drain and no coolant leaked out for me.
Hey Robert Bmw E46 318i I change temperature is still doing something I don't know what to do now please help
What do you mean by 'something' ?
did you have to drain any coolant?
No, i didn't touch it at all and checked the level, made sure no air was in system afterwards.

Hi Robert. There is no need to drain out cooling fluid?
No, mine didn't loose coolant. Carlos is my name, lol I think Rover gets confusing with Robert.

did the machine run normally before replacing the sensor
Yes, except on start up when cold it sometimes took a bit to start.
What causes low input my ect
Unless you have the engine codes to that I would go to flushing the radiator first oil change catalytic converter blockage then the sensor
And some people say Series Land Rovers are tricky to work on..... 🙄

Is it reachible from underneath ?
No, only from the top.

Just buy the obdc tool to read codes and clear them.
