Drafting with Recumbent Trikes on the ICE VTX Racing Trike

- Rich and I explore the art of drafting with recumbent trikes. Please note: Drafting on a bike or a trike can be dangerous. Make sure the rider in front knows to keep a steady pace and not to brake without ample warning to riders behind. Also, for riders behind, don't just look at the rider in front of you, but look past them to look for any upcoming issues/dangers. Do not get your crank too close to the rider in front of you. Keep a safe distance between your crank and their rear tire. Have fun, but be careful!

Great vid. I've found if you trust your drafting partner and have the rear rider get your chainrings as close to the front wheel of the person your drafting you get a Huge benefit.
Yep, trusting your drafting partner is key. My brother almost killed me yesterday when he stopped without warning. :)
Hey guy, did you guys start out at the nimbus fish hatchery? We took the Jebediah smith memorial trail last month with the Laid Back Bike tour. It is a really nice ride. Hey how about
let us see your speedometer as you transition from drafting to non-drafting.
Hi Frank,
We started by Sunrise, about 2 miles south of the hatchery. Showing the speedometer would've been a great idea! Next time!
That was a great powerful ride.the reduced wind resistance on a trike compared to a road bike is incredible. The drafting advantage is quite apparent. Unfortunately the guys I ride with want to draft off of me. I end up doing the work. Thanks for the video. Happy new year.
Well, that's just not right, Mark! I guess they figure that since you're obviously the strongest rider, you won't mind pulling them around. :) Happy New Year!
@@bikestrikesrazors …. I think they want to attach a bungee cord to my trike and let me tow them. To hell with just drafting along!
@@markfeldman6509 Ha! I've had days where I've dreamed of doing that to someone. :)
It would be interesting to see an actual power meter measurement comparing same speeds drafting and not drafting to see the numerical difference.
I really have to get a power meter for these videos, Glenn! I recently picked up a used Wattbike Atom which reads wattage, but it just sits in the corner and doesn't move, so I can't do much with it. :)
@@bikestrikesrazors They are ridiculously expensive
@@DemiGod.. Yep
I have actually noticed that I can get some draft off a line of roadbikes on my trike.. but they cant get any draft off of me.
I can't remember ever making a real attempt at drafting a road bike, but now that you mention you did get some draft, I'm going to have to give it a serious try and see what happens!
I can't ride 25!! Sounds like a song from my youth🤔 but l can still kill it in the down hill 🤗
Now I can't get the image of Sammy Hagar riding a trike out of my head! Happy New Year, Douglas! :)
Educational information.
Perfection video camera.
Does drafting taper off at what distance?
Your experience favored best and safest distance?
Video espousing trade-off drafting to increase rideability distance!
Really neat,
Gary
Hey, Gary! The closer you get, the better the draft, but there is more danger involved if you follow very closely. I usually try to stay at least a trikes length behind and look up ahead of the trike in front to make sure I can see if any situations are developing. Make sure you trust the rider in front and make sure they know not to slam on their brakes if they see a squirrel in the road (don't ask me how I know). You could probably drop back two trike lengths and still get a decent draft. Thanks for watching!
@@bikestrikesrazors Went for a ride on my bicycle with my sister in the days before clipless pedals , feet strapped onto pedals. In the country, all of a sudden, she stops dead, I fall over as can't get feet out. She then said "Oh look, a squirrell"
@@DemiGod.. I guess it's not just my mom then. :)
Lowered the seat of my ICE Sprint X 26 Tour to lowest setting from highest setting and my gain in speed down a hill went from 36 mph to ......wait for it......wait for it.....37.5 mph - SIGH!
Could go faster with higher gearing though as spin out at 30mph.
I noticed the same thing with the VTX- The seat height wasn’t making all that much difference to my top speeds. I’m thinking the aerodynamics of my body on the trike may encompass more variables than just the seat height. I guess you’d need some serious wind tunnel testing to sort it out. One easy way to get more speed- Find a steeper, longer hill! :)
great video..do you lean with the bike or weight shift on turns?
Hi,
Yep, you lean into the turns on the tight corners. The VTX seat is pretty shallow, so it makes it easy to lean your body.
@@bikestrikesrazors thanks
That's some intense riding...but justifiable when there is a BOGO deal at Dunkin Doughnuts 😉
That sounds like some serious motivation, Douglas! Someone should really open up a donut place on the bike trail here. They'd make a fortune! :)
@@bikestrikesrazors, a trike with a doughnut trailer could work in the winter & covert it to a rolling keg of beer garden in summer! Lol.
I would like to see a trike rotating pace line, interval style.
I and two friends have experimented with it and it works... we just need to practice it more to make it look professional. ua-cam.com/video/eHg33yiQjgU/v-deo.html
Yep, check out Glenn's video, Evan! He's done it!
@@bikestrikesrazors I think you may have to approve my two comments with the links to my video because I don't think they show for others...
@@TrikeSquadron The link is showing up in my comment feed and I can click through to your video no problem. Do you see it? The only options it's giving me on the comment are "Remove, Report or Hide User From Channel".
I have checked out the vid.. All good here. Since my wife rides a VTX, and I still ride my Felt F1, I would like to see Bike/ Trike combo efforts. The symbiosis would be of interest to me.
You can hear the difference in the mic.
Yeah, that worked out pretty well! Didn't expect that! :)
