    Message recieved from Gareth the owner of the Frank Herety - Once again many many thanks for really making a fat old bikie smile for the first time in ages.....top site btw! www.bikeituk.club
    Hey Andy, this is Gareth - writing under his internet sudonym Lord Lucan - the owner of the bike.
    I cant thank you enough for doing this. I gave the bike a lot of hammer about 7 stone ago and it was a joy to ride. I rode a Criterium in Stockport town centre 1987 which Frank came down to watch. I was looking forward to see what he thought but at the end of the race (I finished 10th) his opening gambit was "i didnt build that frame for someone to sprint like you just did. Im surprised you didnt snap the frame!" The guy was a genius builder and is a real loss to the cycling world. Its great to notice from the comments that there is one in the museum. Thoroughly deserved. Andy I cant thank you enough for doing this. I had to admit I was a little nervous when you asked to do it as, even though it has been on ice for a very long time now as it holds a lot of sentimentality and history for me. Now and again i have even gone out for a ride on it when i looked at my name on the frame. The job is, quite frankly, astonishing. It has never looked so good. Im glad Frank is not here to hear this but Im sure that the paint job is better than his.....:-) I couldnt believe my eyes when I got it back and noticed a pair of campag record hubs at the centre of tubular tyres! I could never afford them when racing. John Herety, however, did lend me a pair of the Percy Builton pro tubs when i rode a 2 day stage race for Manchester in Yorkshire at the end of 87 and i couldnt believe how much of a difference they made. I was very jealous. Thank you so much, and please pass on my thanks to MRCreations. To all those reading this USE THIS COMPANY! The bike really looks a lot better than when I took delivery from Frank! Right. All i need to do is get back on it and loose some of this weight. However, I had forgotten it was kitted out with my time trialling gears which will probably mean that i will have to ride up and down the mad mile for a few months before i can start to turn those gears. Many Many Thanks. Gareth

    Back in 1995 I visited Frank Herety's workshop. I was on a course at Stockport college. It was the first year that the course ran teaching cycle mechanics. Let's say the course had teething problems. Anyway the tutor knew Frank. The custom lightweight market was in decline so his principle work was chrome restoration for motorbikes & the like. The workshop was an old terrace shop with the kitchen off the back turned in to a workshop for frame manufacturing. Basically just a tiny room with a big bench. Frank was a little bemused by our visit, wondering why we would want to meet him. Lots of poor students! Perhaps if we'd gone in waving tenners? Anyway, good to see a Herety restored. Thanks, Andy.

      Wow, great memories thanks for sharing much appreciated. In 1995 I was still in the Royal Navy before shortly returning to my home town of Stockport. I know the college well. Shame how the industry declined and so many skilled craftsmen lost. Thanks for watching and sharing your memories much appreciated, great hearing personal stories. All the best 😉👍

    I use to visit Frank Herety back in the day,his first workshop was near Strawberry studios lower hillgate.he built most of his frames out of Columbus tubing,as he said its was better than reynoulds to work with,in the last few years of his life he moved into a shop at the top of higher hillgate,i sold him a John Berry Frame,another great Manchester frame builder.wish i had kept that one,but we all do daft things from time to time.

    Another great Resto! - Looks like you used Shimano derrailleur cables, the ends are not sitting flushed in the recessed holes in the shifters, If you used Campagnololo specific derrailleur cables it should be flushed with the Simplex shifters. I had the same problems with some Syncros shifters. But I end up filing down the ends of the cables a bit. - Looking forward to your next build.

I have purchased frames for restoration only where I knew I could get the correct transfers but this is a whole level above. Great project and a great video! Amazing Resto mate, a real credit to you - beautiful! An Iconic frameset treated with the care and reverence it deserves, there's a Herety bike in the Manchester Science and Industry museum which speaks volume's about this special builder. I'm lucky to own a Herety myself.

    Great resto Andy and good move swapping out the Criterium handlebars (looks like the replacements are World Champion), lovely to look at but not so comfortable as an everyday handlebar. Bike is good for another 20 years now :-)

    Just an observation, i noticed the aero brake levers setup. Should it be the bottom tip of the brake levers be parallel with the flat bottom part of the handlebars? Nice restoration build. How was the remaining part of the stem pulled out?

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  2 роки тому

      The levers are probably a cm higher than they should be. The stem was extracted by Mark at MECreations using a slide hammer. Thanks for watching and your support all the best

    Andy you might know answer to this one, is about replacing steering head set? the bottom cup which sits on the fork crown, are they all the same size (diameter) or do they very vary m8.

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  2 роки тому

      Hi they should be the same diameter for the forks however they come in different designs for the headset. Hope this makes sense. All the best 👍

    So would this bike be old enough to qualify for Eroica Britannia ? Really great work! the bike does look excellent.

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks buddy, yes the bike would qualify. However one of the rules is no aero brake levers so probably have to replace these first

    • @lesliereissner4711
      @lesliereissner4711 2 роки тому +1

      If it was raced in the early '80s, as suggested, it would qualify as the cut-off date is 1987. However, it would need pedals with cages and straps rather than the clipless Looks, as well as non-aero brake cable routing but that's all. I am sure it would be very welcome at any l'Eroica event.

    • @peterszucs1578
      @peterszucs1578 2 роки тому +1

      it’s not the actual age of the bike, it’s the spirit... so aero brake levers and clipless pedals are a no-no
