His and Emily's slow speed was basically alluded to the fact that they were 40 or so, the actual reason is because the original game would have a slow pace due to hardware limitations and stability.
To be fair, that's the idea I got of him when you see how many enemies you have to kill off. He seems like a detective with a chip on his shoulder and a license to kill 😂. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@eriksaari4430 I'd have to double check but I do think you need to kill the Pirate zombie in the sword fight. I think you need to get the key from him.
@@thedadliestman yes i did, your way of presenting the game, the jokes and the analysis is just on point dude, great job, you made me fall in love with AiTD again
For games to review, how about Ecstatica and Ecstatica 2. They have a similar style to Alone in the Dark and they aren't talked about often. Also perhaps Little Big Adventure 1 and 2 also created by Frédérick Raynal and company.
I'll definitely have to check those out. I've honestly never heard of Ecstatica before. LBA was never on my radar when I was younger but I'll see if I can find a copy. Thanks for the ideas!
@@thedadliestman Thanks, and I like your videos. 👍😃 Ecstatica, although I only played the second game is a bit like Prince of Persia in 3d with fixed camera angles. Come to think about it Bioforge is also a bit like Alone in the Dark.
Maybe it's been said before but why Carnby isn't coming to every investigation after the second game without a small arsenal is beyond me lol. They should bring back Alone in the Dark but keep Carnby's design similar to the first game with the red hair and not the redesign from a new nightmare. I Just watched a play through of a new nightmare and it looks to be somewhat of a let down. I think Alone in the Dark could make a huge comeback under the right direction. To me the 1st one is still the best. Although I'm not sure I've seen them all, but I haven't heard great reviews.
I feel that, classic Carnby with the stache takes top spot for me. I definitely have a soft spot for part 1 as well, the sequels were good but they were just missing something that I can't put my finger on.
A New Nightmare looks like a decent game, but yeah, I prefer Carnby's old design. Even Infogrames dumbed it down when they removed his mustache. Honestly, I'm more disappointed that the upcoming game changed his design because at least the games after the third one had the reincarnation excuse, at least.
I don't know what happened in my game version but it took me HOURS to move the anvil/boulder at 35:50. The same thing happened with the statue from AITD2 at the beginning, it was so frustrating
A piece of Something Awful AitD3 fanart where Carnby r i s e s with a bottle of booze in his hand screaming that he is the LIGHTBRINGER has been living in my head rent free for years upon years. Also seconding the Ecstatica mention, the first one is weird, creepy, definitely will be right up your alley. The style they went for is a trip, ellipses for days.
I'm surprised you didn’t mention Back to the Future, another series that had its third entry turn the series into a western, though I feel like that worked out better for that film than the popularity of this series.
This one was so obtuse and Janky I had to use your video to get through it. A lot of times I did the correct thing and it just... did nothing because of jank, making me think I was wrong and run around aimlessly. The search and push buttons taking a full 3 or so seconds to actually register had me stuck in the first area because I though the rattle was just a background element I couldn't pick up after pressing it for half a second. The 2nd game just had you find/do stuff automatically so bringing that back, and making it slower than the first game was jarring
killer Carnby goes on another murderous rampage lolol well done mate I subbed now just come back lol. All in all the first game is my favorite and the only one I've vague memories of. Its perfection for its time period and should be viewed as such with all it inspired. Course it wont stand up to modern tech but with every video like yours and jawlr i learn more and more about this game and its creators original passion idea. Do I think the new alone in the dark will be a good or decent horror game? Sure, they seem to want to put the budget and time in to do so so itll probly be the new "evil within " when it releases. As far as a good alone in the dark game noooo im not so sure. Too much marketing focus on David whats his face from stranger things. Ed carnby started off a drunk looser who BARLEY at the time earned the title p.i. and had many debtors that made dealing with satanic and or occult a vacation to him. He was disposable as far as it felt in duecento mansion as evident by how that damned trap floor falls out soon as you best the zombie chicken and clear the attic. guess what? Most ppl didnt think to save then but you SHOULD pop an immediate save going down stairs lol. So lotta folks died and were sent back to attic to explore more and try again lol. Game was genius like that. I dont think the new game will put the player through the alone in the dark paces like that. Reading books that curse you immediately to death, cryptic puzzles and no other humans to make it feel truly occult like in its isolation. Graphic's were awesome for alone in the dark at the time but the sound and way it all came together built that sense of isolation that made dealing with clunky combat controls, tank running controls and scouring the entire area with search active cuz you forgot were you left an item...it felt worth it....most of the time hehe.
I haven't gone away. I've mostly been working on one big video that went way beyond the scope I originally planned and at the same time have 3 others in the works while working more than full-time 😂. I hope to have more stuff for you soon but thanks for watching!
@@thedadliestman id thought killer Carnby had gotten you lol seriously how he went ini first game from gambling drunk called the reptile to how he blows up front gates of buildings for access and has a stellar drinking animation model is wild.
Aitd 2... I don't feel like trying that ever again. The music is bad and so are the enemy models. They're made hastly I guess. Aitd 1, 3 and 4 were all awesome on the other hand.
H..how could you call this game good?! Almost NONE of the puzzles make sense. It was literally unplayable without a guide. I know, I tried. Even with a guide I got "what the fuck, WHY?" moments every second puzzle. The first and second games were playable, this absolutely isn't. Even you acknowledge this problem frequently in the video. No, this is definitely not a good game.
I think it might be to each his own. I definitely enjoyed 3 more than 2 but some of my friends couldn't stand 3 either so I can see where you're coming from. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!
I remember the game came with a “read me” file that contained a full walkthrough with Carnaby narrating his actions in first person. It was rather funny at times and made events of the game make a lot more sense adding details to the encounters. But even with this walkthrough, there at least I point or two where I still got stuck because the guide sometimes didn’t say exactly how to use the item to solve the puzzle. I enjoyed the game ambience and character design, but it had the most contrived puzzle solutions among the three games for sure.
I never got on too well with 3 for this reason, as well as others. The developers seemed to have wanted to make it more puzzle heavy like 1, while retaining the combat of 2, but added a heap of jank of its own. The thing that I think irritated me the most was the need to search for items rather than automatically picking them up if you were near. It was a pain as they weren't highlighted at all.
Nice narration. But whst tbe hell? But oh boy this game seems to have more random nonsense item puzzels than the worst sierra games. Well at least it seems to be a close call. Anyway. I recall this game had a great cover art that needs to be mentioned.
Carnby isnt alone in the dark with enemies, enemies are alone in the dark with carnby!!
Edward Carnby must have the biggest keychain in the world he picks up keys left and right every 10 steps, no wonder he walks so slow
Either that or his pockets are so full that it's hard for him to even walk 😅
His and Emily's slow speed was basically alluded to the fact that they were 40 or so, the actual reason is because the original game would have a slow pace due to hardware limitations and stability.
Love all of your AitD videos and it just feels right that there is another person out there remembering these games as fondly as I do :)
They're definitely classics. Glad to see a fellow person that enjoys these golden oldies!
Well I have to say, you narrating this series with Carnby as some psychotic murderer is just hilarious XD

pretty sure you can avoid killing anything in the first game
@@eriksaari4430 I'd have to double check but I do think you need to kill the Pirate zombie in the sword fight. I think you need to get the key from him.
@The Dadliest Man fortunately most or all of his victims are already undead, so is Carnby really killing something that is already dead?
Forget that, the man dresses up as Santa without blinking an eye. He is not sane.
Thank you for the spectacular and humorous AITD recap videos, what a walk down memory lane!

"the end of an Era" is perfect for this case of an "one of a kind" game trilogy.

You should cover the crappy 2008 Alone in the Dark game, and eventually the new remake of the original thats coming soon!
The remake I definitely will!
31:38 the pickaxe looks very similar to minecraft diamon pickaxe lol

Alone in the dark new nightmare
I will get to that one eventually 🙂
My favorite part of alone in the dark is when he says I’m alone in the dark and then fisticuffs
