Final Fantasy VII - An In-Depth Retrospective

I was made aware that there is a piece of wrong information in the video regarding how Final Fantasy got its name, my apologies for this part. For the correct information, I'd like to refer you to the following article from Eurogamer where Sakaguchi explains the true story;

Heya champs!
It's been a while but here is a video that I've been dying to make for a very very long time, Final Fantasy VII.
With Final Fantasy VII Remake out and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth around the corner, I felt this was a great time to take a look at this timeless classic.
Final Fantasy 7 always meant a lot to me ever since it came out and if you never played it before, I hope this gives you a good idea of how it was back in the day.
Have a good one and I hope to see you all on the next one, I promise this one won't take almost a year to come out.
Also, be aware that any feedback is good feedback so let me know what you think!
Special thanks to;
@TheLifestream For allowing me to use the footage for the FF VI Tech demo!
@YourFavoriteSon1 For always allowing me to ask you stuff. Appreciate it, bud!
@tangomushi For streaming whenever I needed a break from editing. Appreciate it!

Переглядів 6 тис.2 роки тому
Hey there, kids. This'll be my first retrospective and review that I'll upload on this channel. Today we'll be reviewing Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, a 1997 classic game from the Nintendo 64 era that's very dear to my heart. We'll be taking a look at the Turok Remastered footage since it's the easiest gameplay to record at this time. Quite possibly, I might do Turok 2 Seeds of Evil after this but I'...
amazing, great documentary, this should have way more views!
This was such a soothingly narrated video I use it to sleep ❤
Oh god the music is killing me. Can't watch this, sorry.
Have you played Time Gate: Knight's Chase? I loved that game. It's very similar to Alone in the Dark because it still uses the same engine as the original Alone in the Dark games. The big difference is that it at first takes place in the 1990s, but you spend most of the game in medieval times. I'm very disappointed that they didn't come up with a trilogy. What other games have similarities to Alone in the Dark? I like the original games' graphics and wish they could have made newer games to continue the storyline. Alone in the Dark Inferno is technically a continuation of the original games, but I'm not happy with that game. I'm also not crazy about the recent remake. I wish they could have made the 2024 game into a sequel.
Great video! but I still don't understand why people pronounce it oak-arina oc (c*ck)(glock)(mock)(pocket). ahh-carina
ua-cam.com/video/vFuzClAvAJ0/v-deo.html
Most likely they're from Europe like me. I remember that in my language we always had commercials that pronounced it oak-a-ri-na and I guess it just got ingrained in my head from childhood.
Quinn’s ideas?
The indie horror game Alisa is more alone in the dark than alone in the dark 2
You can also let the enemies fight eachother!
Turok is also great because of many secret area's and warps where tek armor and other goodies can be found.
Planning to make more videos anytime soon? Or is daily life to busy for you too focus on your youtube channel?
Tons of stuff in the works but script writing and editing is taking a long time with real life in the way. Don't worry, I'm not gone. Just slow 💪
As a German, I find the debate around Aeris or Aerith hilarious😂 Most languages don't have the th sound, so the th is pronounced as s instead. For example, in the German localization of the trilogy, the names of Sephiroth & Aerith are written with th. But the dub pronounces them as Sephiros & Aeris, lol.
1:55:20 - the death of Aerith was traumatic! The finality of her death didn't sink in until I got that prompt to insert Disc 2. Even then, there was a sense of denial and hope that she would somehow find some way to come back. With the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake and the deviation from the 1997 story, I'm still hoping she comes back somehow.
Such a good review. I know this channel will be big someday. Dont stop what youre doing, I can give you several game gems you can do review on if you want.
I'm always looking for new games. Maybe I might have actually played them already. Just drop them in here and I'll get back to it asap!
Old gamer here. I played this in my early 20's. Even then, I was absolutely blown away. As a gamer dad myself, I did the right thing, and introduced OoT to my kiddo at an early age. It's still her favorite Zelda.
Turok is my Top 5 Game ever. It never got the recognition it deserves. New Concept, Great Maps, SOUNDTRACK is AWESOME, firearms are great. In 1996 It was such a great game! And still is today. Turok 2 and 3 were a dissapointment. The Original Turok was by far the best!
My uncle Jeremy has died by his own hand!
Karen, Kahili, Marshall, Siebold
I like the ps4 version just because it gives you the 3x speed option. That really helps on replays.
1:55:19 You're 100% right. The screen cutting to black after the aeris scenes and You're just left seeing a faint reflection of yourself before you realize what the text even says, trying to process what just happened. As you grow and experience loss irl you realize how well square nailed that process, You're not gonna be finished with the grieving process before you realize that you can't wait for that feeling to end before you have to keep going. Life doesn't wait. To this day ff7 is the only game to have made me shed real tears. The end of disk 1 is beautiful sadness in game form.
What a fucking great job. One thing, aerith/aeris never went off on her own to the temple of the ancients to summon holy. I believe that was the forgotten capital. Regardless I hope there's a 13 lol
Yeah, I still beat myself up over messing that one up. Thanks for pointing it out!
@@thedadliestman haha you are welcome. Enjoy the future anxiety.
In german the code 3 2 1 was remembered as that: "3..2..1. Rechts vor links, die goldene Mitte geht vor!" Right before left, the golden middle at first. I still remember it.. as I was 6 before :')
I scrolled through all the comments going crazy until I found someone else who said what i wanted to say. The person making this video makes the Aeris Aerith name situation even more complicated then it needs to be. The simple explanation is that Japanese doesnt have a "th" . So the translation was Aeris because it's closest to the kana for エアリス (erisu /aerisu) . What they were going for was Aerith (anagram of earth) , and the localizer did what they had to do. This was the 90s and during the 90s , WAY less people spoke Japanese compared to today. There was also WAY less uniformity regarding how the 2 languages would interact whenever a translation was unable to be 1 : 1 Now , decades later in a world with google translate being almost to the point of being viable and 10s of thousands of people learning Japanese everyday, it's much easier to translate things as they were meant to be. The localizer from 1997 did a great job as far as im concerned. People don't understand how different translating was before the internet was common. I'll always call her Aeris.
1:21:35 it's not the chocobo racing that I hate. Is the prize algorithm that is F! Up!
MGS4PDNEq|:-
Final fantasy’s name had nothing to do with being the final.
This. Having such a blatantly wrong fact right at the beginning makes me question the whole video
I'll watch every long form FF7 video on UA-cam. Soon I'll be watching every FF9 long video too If you don't have a long FF9 vid, tell me when ya do!
I don’t even play video games but I have replayed this game 20-30 times. It’s hard to explain, it’s mystical to me.
The mobsters in the labyrinth and the mansion are the crew of one eyed jack rendered immortal by the witch. That is why when you kill them there, they disappear into the ground to turn back to one eye jack's ship, where you will meet them again. and then when you kill them there, they turn into a sack of bones and are truely dead. Also, the underground cave in the labyrinth applies the same logic. Being in a kinda tomb or whatever, the ghost and zombie you kill there disappear and do not go into the ground 👍 this moment is a kinda easter egg of alone in the dark 1 btw.
Can people please start pronouncing ocarina correctly it's not OAK-arina it's OC-arina literally exactly how it's spelled. Why are you putting one extra letter and replacing the C with a K 😂😂😂
24:00 the guy who attacks is the same one you gave the whiskey to In order for him to not appear in this stage you have to kill him while he's drunk downstairs
Rope you in with awesome lead, then switch to woke character. Last of us 2 killing Jole and switching to lesbian. Spiderman 2 backseating Peter. Ghost of Tsushima ditching Jin and switching to lesbian. Horizon Forbidden West making Aloy lesbian. God of War turning Kratos into a sensitive beta. Make it stop lol
What the heck is this music? I can’t focus on the video.
I feel sorry for you kids who didnt experience this masterpiece when it arrived in 1990's, great memories
To be fair, I can't finish this
Totally fair. Thanks for giving it a go!
@@thedadliestman My suggestion is to not use phrases like "To be fair" so much. Mix the language up a bit. It's a nitpick, but small things make and break successful projects.
@kenhammscousin4716 That's valid feedback. I'll keep it in mind during writing! Thanks!
40:36 Is li‘l waving or flipping the birdie?
Some slight misinformation near the beginning. Sword of Mana is the reboot/remake of Final Fantasy Adventure. In japan it is an official final fantasy spin-off. In Europe it was renamed Mystic Quest. It was given a proper 1:1 remake called Adventures of Mana But heres the confusion. What you ade claiming Mystic Quest was dumbed down ff2, is actually the game named FF Mystic Quest for SNES in NOrth America. Europe had to rename that version Mystic Quest Legend, and that's the one with the reputation of the dumbed down. Also its easy to confuse that D&D was very popular at the time. But it was still pretty niche. And stigma and stereotypes exist regardless of factual data. The internet wasn't so big and collecting player feedback wasnt the same as back then. Every game was a gamble. They had to make sure it was the best one.
Yeah, i messed a few things up in this one. Thanks for letting me know and I'll keep it as feedback for the next videos!
39:28 What about the piano?
Started this game yesterday, this is serving as a guide/reason to keep going, I gotta talk to Aerith’s mom to climb the wire to get to the Shinra HQ right?
Pickle head ahh
Good video man ! FF7 is such a great game
Good job man. Im hoping for more nostalgic in depths videos from you!
4:00 Not to firget nights of xentar. The pinnacle of jRPGs at the time. 👍
I made it through! Or rather I slept through it 😅 your video was on when I woke up and caught the end of it. Cool content though!
I'm resistant to change due to trauma and have been denying my age since i was 13, remaining a kid in as many little ways as possible. You'd think a video retelling the entire oot game while referring to me as a kiddo would be up my alley, but tbh it kinda creeps me out 🤣 video was cool otherwise tho
How old are you bro?
Aitd 2... I don't feel like trying that ever again. The music is bad and so are the enemy models. They're made hastly I guess. Aitd 1, 3 and 4 were all awesome on the other hand.
This game scared me to death as a kid. The first one scared me too, but something about the bad guys being human and having guns made it seem real in a way no other game ever had to me before. Plus the clown in the opening cutscene just terrified me back then.
when I first played my favorite part was that the weapons changed the sprites.
To be fair, it's still a pet peeve of mine if I change equipment and there's no visual change.
fym from the remake, people have always been calling her aerith, even before the remake.
I fell asleep with UA-cam on autoplay and ended up here and let me just say waking up to hearing a recap about Aerith casting Holy was peak. Definitely saving this video
